Five of us from the German-American Club of Albany NY had dinner here on Thursday July 30, 2026. Highly recommended by one of our party who had been here previously with other members of the GACA. Opened by Christian Rath in September 2023, it features dishes learned from his long career in food service. Spargel is the German word for Asparagus. This is a comprehensive tour of authentic German cusines from many regions of Germany. Just explore the menu options on the website. We started with a variety of Paulaner draft beers at the bar with the knowledgeable, Beau. Our server at our table was Kelly L. She was very helpful explaining the different dishes and provided excellent service. We started with two of their famous suppe (soup) - Spargelcremesuppe - gream of asparagus w/ garlic croutons ($8.50) and the most popular seasonal Cream of Yellow Chatrelle Mushroom Suppe w/ bacon & onion ($15.50). Unique to us and delicious. Dinners were trio of wild game sausages-wild boar, rabbit, & elk served w/homefries, red cabbage, & ligonberry sause ($34.50), Schweinelende-pan-seared pork tenderloins w/yellow chantrelle sauce, potato croquettes, and bacon wrapped green beans ($36.50), Gebratene Schweine Haxe-pork shank slow roasted with dunckel (dark) beer sauce w/ potato dumplings & sauerkraut ($35). The last dinner was the Bavarian Sampler Tour of German Cusine for Two - 12 items on this platter ($80). Our party of five could have shared this dish. It was Wunderbar! Spargel serves authentic & unique dinners along with the familiar such as Rouladen, Schnitzels, & Goulash. There was no wait getting into the restaurant and the waiter was extremely sweet! I was hoping that the interior would be a slightly more decorated in German Style ambience, but it was more nonspecific. The food was very interesting since I had never eaten some of the German type foods they had available and some of it was delightful, but some of it was not memorable. I definitely would be willing to try this place again though so I'm not inclined to say that it isn't worth a try. The jury is still out! read more

Enjoyable meal at Spargel On 9. Nice to have a place where you can get a unique meal. They provide pretzel bread but we also had the bier cheese with it which was delicious. My meal was good (Schweinebraten) but my partner really liked her sauerbraten. Portions were plentiful. Just wish that they were still open for lunch. read more

There are evenings when the air in upstate New York feels less like oxygen and more like a test of perseverance and pulmonary fortitute. Last Saturday was one of them. The Arctic air had ideas about permanence. The car's thermometer read -14, and it didn't know the wind was gusting at 30 mph. My family and I scurried off Route 9 and into Spargel on 9, seeking sausages, gravies, and the hearty warmth of central European food. We had a six o' clock reservation. We arrived ten minutes early, cheeks stinging, only to find the dining room looking pleasantly underpopulated. I would guess a quarter full, perhaps one third if I was feeling generous. Reservations, in this case, felt like bringing a life raft into a swimming pool. Still, it's nice to feel expected. The host asked if we would mind sitting in a booth in the bar area. This struck me as odd given the abundance of empty tables in the main dining room, but mystery is good for the appetite. We agreed and settled in among the taps and glassware. Warm pretzel bread appeared with honey butter that tasted as if bees had briefly considered culinary school. We ordered Backers mit Apfel Sauce, potato pancakes with apple sauce, and they arrived promptly. Crisp at the edges, soft in the middle, devoured with the focus of people who had just crossed a tundra parking lot. The table went silent save for appreciative chewing. My wife chose the Rindfleisch Gulash. It arrived in a state of deep, fragrant seriousness. The beef fell apart at the slightest suggestion from a fork. It was rich, warming, and the sort of thing that makes winter feel much less like a personal attack. She allowed me several bites, which I accepted with the gratefullness of a man being handed state secrets. I ordered the Kassler Rucken Vom Grill, featuring smoked pork loin from Oscar's Smokehouse, a local legend. The cut was thick and beautifully smoked. My wife and oldest son both sampled it and approved. Yet in the quiet corner of my mind I could not escape the notion that I was enjoying a very accomplished ham steak. This is not an insult. It was expertly prepared. I simply suspect that on my next visit I will wander elsewhere on the menu. My oldest son selected the Erlanger Sauerbraten and took to it with enthusiasm. He managed about half, which for a growing fourteen year old is an achievement bordering on mythical. The rest went back to the hotel in a box, where I am told it continued to perform admirably. My youngest ordered the kid's bratwurst with french fries. This was the one faint cloud in an otherwise sturdy sky. The sausage was on the small side and the fries were serviceable but uninspired. After finishing, he remained hungry, which is notable because he is not typically an ambitious eater. At this price point, a more generous bratwurst would have felt right. Service was the chief reason I cannot quite award five stars. It was exceedingly slow. Not inattentive, and certainly not careless, simply stretched thin. Our server and bartender, Beau, moved with the intensity of a man attempting to occupy three dimensions at once. He mixed drinks, took orders, ran food, delivered checks, and did it all with good humor and great skill. The delay was clearly a matter of staffing, not effort or ability. In the end, we left warm, well fed, and maybe slightly perfumed with smoke and gravy. The food was very good, and in some cases excellent. The room felt welcoming, even if curiously arranged. We will return the next time we find ourselves braving a Queensbury winter evening. Four stars, gladly given, with hopes that the next visit includes an extra pair of hands behind the bar or in the dining room, and perhaps one more bratwurst for the smallest member of the family. read more

Heather was a wonderful server. She recommended several menu items that we so enjoyed. I had the pork collar, so tender and flavorful. My wife had the veal schnitzel, with jaeger sauce. My daughter had the chicken schnitzel and both were delicious and so flavorful. My daughter also had a unique beverage called spezi, which was half Fanta orange and half Coke. Strange sounding but delicious. When we return, we would try the Bavarian platter for two (that could easily fed three) that we saw another customer devour by himself. read more

Our first visit here on recommendation of friends. A contemporary German restaurant owned by Chef Christian Räth. We were promptly greeted and seated at a nice table for six. Kelly was our server and she was awesome. She is so professional and knowledgeable and friendly. Today was the 2nd anniversary and we received some very nice appetizers to celebrate this great event. We ordered Duck, Sauerbraten, Wiener Schnitzel, Chicken Cordon Bleu and Bratwurst, Knockwurst, and Weiwurst. Some of us ordered the asparagus soup to start( Spargel). It was so creamy and delicious. The food came promptly and cooked to order. You will definitely need a to go box as you will be served a generous portion. We finished up with an Apple strudel for all to taste. It was just delicious. It was an incredible dinner in a nice atmosphere. This is a very nice restaurant and the prices are fair for the food you are served. Run, don't walk! This German restaurant serves up authentic and hearty meals, and has German beer on tap. I absolutely love German food and my meal here did not disappoint. The quality of everything we had was absolutely excellent, and we left full with leftovers. I had the beef rouladen which was the most tender beef in rouladen that I've ever had! The flavor and textures were incredible. I also really enjoyed the spaetzle and the red cabbage. The service was also fantastic, as our waitress checked on us frequently and was friendly. Some of the best German food I've had, including in Germany. Delicious and authentic. The menu has a nice intro on the chef/owner's background. Had the pork Cordon Bleu with spatzle and bacon wrapped green beans. It was great. They have a few styles of Weihenstephan beer on tap as well as wines and I think a cocktail menu too, but I was focused on beer. Traditional beer hall music plays in the background but isn't loud or interfering with conversation. read more

I made reservations for a Saturday night and they had plenty of availability. When we got there, we were greeted right away by the host, who asked if we had been there before. Though the space was formerly an Outback Steakhouse, they definitely put their own touch on the interior as it had tons of artwork and decor that made it clear you were in a German restaurant. It was really nicely decorated! To start, my boyfriend and I ordered a Hefeweissbier and Vitus. All of their beer offerings are from Weihenstephan, a German brewery. You can also get a flight of four different options. The beer was great and was served in huge German beer glasses. For an appetizer, we got the pretzel sticks with beer cheese. They were good but you can definitely skip them since they serve complementary pretzel sticks with honey butter, which are delicious. For our entrees, I ordered the Frankische Bratwurste - homemade brats with home fries and sauerkraut. I also got a side of Spatzle - the German form of mac and cheese. It was all delicious! My boyfriend got the Erlanger Sauerbraten - beef that's slow roasted and marinated in a red wine and vinegar sauce, served with red cabbage and a potato dumpling. He absolutely loved it! It was really tasty and cooked perfectly. Overall, it was a delicious experience and I hope to go back soon. Next time I'll save room for dessert! read more

Wow, is all I could say! Everything we ordered came out beautifully, my friend and I ordered our dinners to go and we couldn't believe how good it was. Everything was packaged with high-quality containers, which kept our fresh food, hot! We ordered Schweinebraten, Schweine Haxe, Angus-Beef NY strip steak, and macaroni and cheese. The schweinebraten- the German pork roast, was very tender, their sauce for this plate was truly decadent. Their Schweine Haxe (pork shank) is also very good, loved the dark beer sauce! They didn't have potato dumplings for both pork plates at the time and they courteously offered potato pancakes instead, and to our surprise, it was crispy and just as good, if not better! The 12 oz. strip steak was cooked exactly the way I asked, and the steak came with perfect grill marks. To top off our surprise, their Bavarian pretzel rolls and honey butter will absolutely make you savor your dining experience at Spargel on 9. Stopped in with friends on a whim during their visit to the area knowing that they love German-inspired cuisine. While German food is not usually high up on my preference list, I found the menu to be eclectic enough to suit all palettes. I had the herring appetizer (which was huge) and a delicious salad as my main course. The herring is definitely an acquired taste-and I loved it. The sweet sour cream sauce with onions smothering the hearty herring filets brought me back to being a kid; I loved it. Ate. It. All. The complimentary pretzel sticks were served with hot honey butter-yum! We were told that more would be brought-but sadly that didn't happen. (Which, in retrospect was totally fine since we had PLENTY of food). Baked Brie appetizer was a winner. The meat dishes had mixed reviews-it was good quality but reported back as not as flavorful as they would have liked. Dessert was nice...strudel! The service was a little spotty at times but our server was super friendly. It's a pretty large space and was starting to get busy when we left. Spargel is still fairly new and likely working some kinks out. I'll definitely check it out again in the future. read more

In all honesty I was fearful of this place, I'm not the biggest fan of Western European food due to its heaviness but spargel made me rethink my opinion. The pretzels with honey butter come with every meal and were delicious. Not the best pretzels, but they complemented the butter well. We also orders pretzels with beer cheese, which I would have passed on if had known the pretzels with honey butter come with the table. I had the tenderloin with mushroom sauce which was delicious and so comforting. The side salad was a hodgepodge of items but I picked out what I enjoyed. They also had this mushroom soup special when we went that you must get if they have it again. It was one of the greatest things I've ever tasted. The portions are also huge and we all took home leftovers. The service was great too! It took a bit to first get a server to our table but after then we were treated with such kindness we felt like family by the end. read more

Delicious old world (European) food in the vaunted German tradition. Excellent service, with staff and chefs, who care about customers and who like to have fun and interact. I ate at the bar upon arrival, but there are tables at windows (many) and large tables for groups of 5-6 people. The ambience is quiet and calm - no frantic service, no mad dashes, no 'dining chaos'. The food is solid. Pretzels, meats, veggies and fries are the best. The bar employees were a fun and polite bunch! When they were behind the bar, they were shaking up drinks, then wiping down the bar area. The chef came out into the dining room, ambled around quick and said a nice 'hello' to guests: what a nice gesture! But you will have to eat at Spargel 9 to get such hospitality.. One last point: this place is spotless. I am talking immaculately clean. The bar chairs, glasses, cutlery, men's room and linens were simply pristine. To the persons working in the back area: kudos! A marvelous evening out for a brief respite from exhausting all my calories.. this was the most wonderful Glens Falls, German dining. My sister brought our family here during Xmas vacation in Ballston spa. It was definitely worth the drive and lived up to the reputation and raves from my sis and bro-in-law. It was very busy on Friday night after Christmas. We waited a few minutes for our table, not long, but got seated way in the back near the bathrooms, which is fine for our party of six including my elderly mom. Just wish it could've been closer to the door. It used to be an outback steakhouse, but was clearly renovated and it's fine inside and a little bit loud, but it's large and the tables are far apart enough and it's a nice open layout. The food was amazing. The pretzel bread with hot honey butter was surprisingly included and delicious. Everybody's meals were amazing including my mom's chicken Cordon Bleu, which she doesn't order often, but she just was moved to try that and was happy with it and chose french fries of all things as her side and they were very, very good and cooked perfectly, served hot. And definitely look like they were homemade due to the cut. I tried someone Spaetzle and it was deliciously good the right texture and they certainly get a length out of it that I haven't achieved no matter how many times I've tried to cook it myself. I had the Schweinebraten which was recommended by my brother-in-law who had gotten it two times before and he wasn't wrong. It was delicious. I was first turned off by the description of the cut of meat being the "pork collar" but I went with it and was pleasantly surprised with the tenderness and the marbling that that kind of meat has really gives it a delicious texture after what I can only imagine is a deep and long braising, and the potato dumpling was almost like the inside of a croquette, smooth textured but like velvet, soaking up the deliciously, savory and comforting brown sauce. The house salad was spectacular with a tone of pickled bits that added brightness and was different- each bite a mix of sweet sour and savory. I want that salad again! Enough for 2 meals maybe 3 if the third was a snack or lunch, I loved it here. The only issue was service was slow. They were busy but we had to wait a while for even water, not to mention drinks and ordering. The food took over 30 minutes to come out which was like I said worth it, but felt like forever. They are popular! Order an app next time to feed the hungry ones because it is worth the wait! read more

Most amazing gluten free German food I've ever had! My husband (not celiac) loved everything as well. We highly recommend splitting the platter for 2! They were able to make everything gluten free, so we were able to try a little bit of everything including GF spätzle, potato pancakes, sauerbraten, and so much more. First time visitor to Spargel on Nine. Of note it's been a long time since I have tried German food. The host and hostess were awesome, friendly, and welcoming. Our waitress, Kelly was also awesome. The grilled smoked pork loin "Kassler Rücken Vom Grill" was perfectly cooked, as were the potatoes with the sauce. The sauerkraut was phenomenal, and I have avoided sauerkraut in the past, because of the taste, but this was excellent, tangy, slightly sour and sweet all at once. WOW! I could have a plate of it alone, that good! Also try the baked asparagus, wrapped in swiss cheese and ham with a hollandaise sauce. It is delicious, perfectly cooked, tender but still had a nice crunch. The "Gemischter Salad Teller" salad is spectacular in presentation, and the house dressing is perfect, light, refreshing and does not overpower the salad. read more

We took my father to Spargel last night to celebrate his birthday. Usually my mother would make his favorite german dishes for his birthday Sauerbaten and Black Forrest Cake but this year we decided to go out for it. Needless to say I think we have a new tradition to celebrate his birthday. The food at Spargel was fantastic! Traditional German we haven't had since living in NYC years and years ago. The Saurerbraten could be cut with your fork, gravy was perfect and the dumplings were incredibly light and delicious. Our large party also had the Cordon Blue, Wiener Schnitzel and the Schweinshaxe. My father also loved the Hungarian Gulash!!! We were so stuffed we had desserts to go, the Black forest torte and pistachio cheesecake. Both were amazing later! We can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu. The service was excellent and Chef checking with each table was the icing on the cake! read more

Spargel on 9 does so many things right from hospitality, service and an authentic German cuisine and dining experience. The menu is tightly formed around the German classics which is as it should be. The overall dining experience was a very good one reminiscent of my 4yrs living in Germany. I might be wrong but I believe the Sauerbraten was served using the Eye of the Round rather than the traditional or customery Rump Roast. Because of the extended brining period and minimal Eye Round fat content compared to the Rump Roast, you get a very tender but less flavorful Sauerbraten which was my experience. The Sauerbraten sauce was excellent, typical and traditional in every way. The Rotkohl was excellent piquant and delicious, German fried potatoes using American potatoes will never match the flavor of German potatoes, period. I, also, would have preferred the potatoes served a little hotter. From pilsner, appetizer, soup, salad, main dish to dessert this was a very good dining experience which would benefit from a tweak here and there. read more

Here for the soft open of this brand spanking' new German restaurant and the kitchen is feeling the heat! I guess it's a good sign for this new business. Parking lot is packed, people driving up from Saratoga- but they clearly weren't prepared. Understandable that the entrées took for ever to come out but they were quite good. Sauerbraten was delicious. Cordon Beau was yummy as were my pork medallions, and especially liked the pretzel/bread rolls brought to the table first! Good German beer as well. It's a little bright (dim the lights folks), there no dinner music (play some tunes please) and it's a big place (used to be an Outback Steakhouse I think) so it's not a "cozy" place but the food makes up for the lack of ambiance. I'm sure they will work the bugs out and food wait times will improve. We'll be back. read more

My wife and I tried Spargel on 9 for the first time tonight. We were both impressed. My wife had the Erlanger Sauerbraten, which I also tasted. Absolutely delicious. I had the Beef Rouladen, which was also quite good. Janel L was our server and was fantastic. She was friendly and professional, helping us navigate the menu. Tripp (spelling may be off) greeted us on the way in and made us feel very welcome. We can't wait to go back. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to try great German food. read more
