Our AC unit stopped blowing cold air. Had one company come out and tell me the unit was too old to be fixed since it was over 20 years old. OK seriously this guy is a magician with hot water heaters. Our ignition went down and we have a busy four person household so...we needed that hot water heater fixed pronto! Got a reply and same day visit. He didn't have the integrated igniter unit that our heater uses....so he built one out of the parts he did have! He was clipping metal, wiring, adding bits from the old one so it fit. Amazing. Then when he finished he got a funny look, took out his 'sniffer' for natural gas and found that the tie-in was done incorrectly years ago and was leaking gas. He re-cemented it and checked all over the area and the air unit to make sure it was safe. A truly conscientious person. Highly recommend. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about Santiago and A&K Heating and Air Conditioning. I will definitely be using him going forward. I called Santiago on Friday about a leak I was experiencing with my air conditioner inside and he offered to come by the next day, on a Saturday morning, to take a look and fix it. The job ended up being more involved than originally expected because of the oddness of my particular HVAC system, but Santiago took it all in stride. I was really impressed by his depth of knowledge and the extent he went to, to make sure the issue was resolved. Whereas others might have just capped the leak and walked away, Santiago tested the system to make sure it wasn't still clogged and discovered that it was, and did some additional work to further ensure the system wasn't clogged so I wouldn't experience the leak again. He also was so mindful of not leaving a mess or having to open up my wall unnecessarily, which I really appreciated. I've had a few folks come out this summer to take a look at my A/C and even service it, and none pointed out the issues Santiago did. Even then, he didn't bad mouth those other companies, which just speaks so highly of his character. Ultimately, I'm a 100% satisfied customer. I requested a few quotes from various companies and A&K came in with a very good price for replacing my 55 year old air handler and thermostat. He came on a Friday for the measurements and on Saturday afternoon I had quote with what was to be included and what was not covered. (I had gotten a quote from another company for over $2000 more and it did not include any information.) On Monday Santiago came and reverified the measurements and by Tuesday evening I had a new air handler and thermostat. I have lived in DC proper for over 10 years and have encountered a lot of sub-par service peeps. A & K Heating and Air Conditioning have restored my faith in humanity. They went above and beyond and I'll use them again for sure! Our heat pump went out and I called four companies for bids...one didn't service the area, one guy showed up with a flashlight, one guy told me to send him pictures and never showed, but Santiago from A & K showed up with a ladder and tools...clearly ready to work. He proposed several solutions ahead of replacement including a cleaning and explained in great detail why he reached his conclusions. After working their plan we ended up having to replace the heat pump and the compressor. They knocked it out in a day and while installing they also repaired a few issues from the original installation. Because of their extra attention to detail the temperature in the back of the house is better regulated. The new unit runs like a champ and is quiet. Two days before the install, we also suffered a huge plumbing issue...think a fountain out of your drain...Santiago's partner Ryan came through and fixed that and brought it up to code from the original install (which was not to code, because well the city is terrible). There's also more room under the sink now too. Our central AC unit stopped working in the middle of a heatwave, and we went through 4 days of contractors not being able to diagnose (no internal roof access), sometimes trying to charge without diagnosing, or, in one case, misdiagnosing a capacitor issue as a compressor issue which would mean long time to fix and thousands of dollars in costs. Needless to say, we were at our wits end. On Day 4, I contacted Santiago, who decided to come diagnose the issue himself, came early and found that the issue was a capacitor. He changed the capacitor and the issue was fixed immediately. This saved us weeks of waiting for compressor parts we did not need and thousands of dollars in costs. Santiago did a great job for us back in November when our heating system failed. He did such a good job we decided to bring him in this spring for an air conditioner preseason tuneup. We have used other companies which promote "Spring tune-up special deals" for this task in the past and it was a waste of $ - all they did was quickly gloss over the equipment and say everything looks ok. Santiago took his time and was very detailed both with the inside unit and the compressor (which was filthy and in need of a thorough cleaning). Santiago did it all.
