I hate writing poor reviews, but I hope they take this feedback to heart and as an opportunity to get better. As a reference point for them, the appointment was on Monday 9/29 at 10am. Address starting with 439 in the Visitation Valley area. I made an appointment after getting a call back from Jesse Horn. He showed up on time and as scheduled. We spent time reviewing the area of the home that needed new concrete work performed. He was very professional, insightful, and courteous. I believe he threw out a quote somewhere in the neighborhood of $12.50 / Sq Ft. (I could be mistaken). We ended the meeting with him setting an expectation of an official quote delivered to me at the end of the day or no later than the next day. Overall, the experience was good. That's where it all ended. Nada...nothing....not a peep or a follow up. I had a few other quotes to compare, but never received a follow up call from these folks. Sure, I could have hounded them, but I personally believe I shouldn't have to chase down quotes when I'm the one flipping the bill. Shouldn't they be earning my business? Anyhow, I ended up going with another contractor that was actually more expensive (assuming the quote above was correct). My guess is because this was a project that was in a undesirable neighborhood and they probably assumed I couldn't afford them, they didn't take me seriously. Unfortunately, the 1 star rating was a result of me personally wasting 2 hours of my time (travel & evaluation) that was a complete waste. This was a project for my parent's house, and it's not my fault I grew up in the hood. Oh well. Updated: I received a follow up call from Jesse to explain the situation. Apparently, he's transitioning jobs and this fell through the cracks. He apologized and I appreciated the effort. My original rating was a 1 star. I will move to a 3 star. At the end of the day, my goal isn't to hurt business but to provide constructive feedback that helps management. read more

In all fairness, Mr. Heavey and his construction crew did not (and will not) do any work for me. I have concrete work to be done around my home, but I don't feel I need to beg someone to do it. On June 25th I phoned their office to request an estimate. I was told that Mr. Heavey would not be in for several days but that he would call upon his return. An email was sent promptly after the conversation to request some pictures of the proposed work site. I sent the pictures on 2 July. When I returned from vacation around 24 July, I called the office to inquire about the status of my estimate request. The friendly receptionist seemed puzzled and told me that I would be getting a call later that day or the next day. Would you believe it ? No call. While the amount of time wasted was minimal, I feel that this attitude isn't one that I'd want to work with when having work done. He may do good work. I'll never know since I'll never hire him. I can't recommend this fellow. read more

When we got the "You are assessed for street repairs" notice from the city, we didn't know what to do. (Actually we were told that we had to repair sidewalk squares that were cracked, but you get the idea.) We waited while neighbors all around us said that they knew contractors that would do the job. They'd tell their contacts to call us, too. We -- and the neighbors -- heard nothing back from the people they knew. So, I finally called a contractor a friend recommended. They said that they didn't handle sidewalk repairs but recommended Heavey Construction. I called Heavey, and Mike called back within a couple hours. He came out and looked at the work that same day. He provided a verbal quote on the spot and followed up with a written estimate with three options the next morning. The next day after we signed the agreement, Heavey pulled the permits and put out the "No Parking" signs. Mike's team completed the work the following day. No problems. Professional. And, everyone from Mike down to the concrete saw workman were friendly, personable, and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Mike's crew wound up doing my nieghbor's sidewalks, and my neighbor's neighbors'. It all looks good, and the work has been accomplished quickly. Heavey does more that sidewalk repairs... they'd do anything with concrete. When it comes time to do the retaining wall, I'll be calling them back. read more

I was hoping for a better experience after reading such great Yelp reviews. After speaking with the nice receptionist, I emailed a PDF file containing images and descriptions of my sidewalk job along with the city typical details for a basic quote. I was told that it would be reviewed and they'd get back to me. After not hearing back after 4 days, I emailed and called to ask when I could expect a response. After a week, I gave up and wasted a week of my schedule. If the job is too small or not what you do, please just let us know! Disappointed and will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

First of all, after screening the good reviews about this business, I decided to give this a try. This company is a serious ball dropper! Called this company's reception about my project on my relative's behalf. This guy Tim called back a couple days later talking enthusiastically about coming over for a formal quote and stuff. Already having a time scheduled, this guy called in 5 mins before the scheduled visit saying he couldn't make it due to busy out of town projects! So I was alright, thinking they might be really busy, and at least thanked him for the decency to at least calling me and letting me informed! He rescheduled to next couple of days at the same time for a second shot. On next scheduled time, i took off work early in order to make this appointment myself! no body showed! Calling this guy Tim, after waiting for 40 mins past! He said he got busy and totally forgot about the appointment! WTF! Long story short, after calling between the office and Tim, urging them to make it up to me about their business practices and how they treat their potential customers! The office promised to call back with solutions! A week went past, Still NOTHING! Hey Yelpers, beWare! Not Recommended for any of ur projects! This company wasted my precious times and lost wages! Thanks to Mike Heavey for his quick response to our original Yelp review. We appreciated his attention to our concerns and his willingness to address the problems. He came to the site personally to oversee the fix. Oscar and his crew did good work in cutting in expansion gridlines and patching the damaged parts by resurfacing the whole area with a new layer of quick dry concrete. Our HOA still has reservations about the durability of the concrete poured in the original job. Mike reassured us that the quality of the concrete used here is the same as the quality used at the airport. We'll keep an eye on it for the next year or so and have Mike's direct contact info should we see any signs of deterioration. read more

The next day Mike and his crew were out replacing the house trap and sewer vent with solid cast iron, backfilling, and replacing the sidewalk. The entire job was done within two days. We got a notice from the city to repair our sidewalk and I asked around to my coworkers and friends for referrals because everywhere I called seemed so expensive and/or people were very rude. I was referred to Heavey Construction and am SO thankful I was! They scheduled the work and got the permit quickly, were in front of my house before I left for work and when I came back it was all done, came back the next day to make sure it was all ok and clean everything up - never once inconveniencing me at all. Not to mention Pam in the office was extremely pleasant to work with and super sweet AND they gave us a great price! I refer them 100%. Well, they did the job. Other than that not the greatest experience - took longer than expected and their concrete work soon cracked in a few places. And to top it off I have later found that they charged me twice as much as neighbors paid for similar work. But that taught me to always get multiple estimates, so that's another positive. read more

The city of San Francisco tagged my sidewalk for repair due to tree root damage from my giant, gorgeous, 40-year-old tree. I feared the city would remove the tree, or cut back the roots so extensively that the tree would die. Michael Heavey and his team saved the day and the tree. He came up with a plan to enlarge the tree box, thereby saving the roots, and preventing future sidewalk damage. He gave me a detailed itemized quote--approved by my HO insurance. Mike managed all the appropriate permits, no parking signs, sidewalk closures and the like. He had an arborist on site to assess the root situation once the sidewalk was torn up. In the middle of the job the sewer line backed up (just by coincidence) and Mike got a hydra-flush expert to clear the line. So glad he was here when that happened. Blindingly fast--they did the entire job in three days: one day to break up the sidewalk--which they did by hand to insure they didn't damage any of the water and gas lines below the sidewalk; one to build a new tree box, pour and set the concrete; and one to clean up. It looks great! Highly skilled, professional, tidy, and a pleasure to work with--it doesn't get any better than that. read more

Mike and his team worked miracles in my backyard. What started out as a large dirt pit filled with weeds and not much else, has now become a gorgeous retreat with redwood decking and a beautiful trellis, stamped concrete pathways with a seating area, and even a turf dog run. They work quickly, their prices are fair, and they are very responsive. Last year I started looking for a contractor to replace a failing 6' cinder block retaining wall. I started in July and hardly anyone I called made a bid. They would come out and talk and sound good and then...nothing. The only detailed bid I got was for a 4' wall so the guy wouldn't have to get permits. That wasn't high enough. Time was passing and with the first rain in December the wall started to move. I was panicking. Michael called me back and came out the same day. We had the wall down the next day because it was a hazard to my neighbor below me. The estimate was within what I expected and was for a 6' wall with steel beams and treated wood and a fence on top. He appointed Carlos as the job foreman and he was wonderful. Any concerns I had or my neighbor had were immediately addressed. It was difficult for them because by then the rains were on us and they had to work around this. All the workers were great and helpful. My wall took a while because of the weather but they removed much dirt, including some I wanted gone from the middle of my yard . When the wall was done they brought back some dirt and leveled the whole yard. The beam holes were dug down 6' and the concrete was poured. Much gravel and red lava rock arrived and disappeared into the construction. Eventually, the wall was finished and I didn't know how they were going to put a fence on top of it but Carlos had that all figured out and now I have a beautiful fence at the end of my property on top of the wall. I would recommend them for any concrete or wall project you may have. Mine took a while because of the rain. I am happy with the results. The ladies in their office were very helpful: thank you! They took care of everything: the demolition, leveling the entire yard, a concrete retaining wall and redwood fence on all sides, stamped/stained concrete pads and paths, artificial turf, raised concrete planters and seating, foliage and landscaping, drainage, electrical, and sprinklers. This was no small job, as our backyard is approximately 100' deep and has no exterior access. They're wonderfully honest, hard-working, and polite. The city of San Francisco tagged my sidewalk for repair, along with a bid for the work from the city's contractor. In my experience, big city preferred contractors selected by the government usually have connections and don't do the best work, so I wanted to try to find an alternative. I wrote to all the sidewalk contractors on the SF DPW page, and received three bids worth considering. Michael was the only one who really engaged in a discussion of what I wanted beyond just fixing the city's work (I needed to remove a stupid planter box the previous owner had left in place and filled in with stones and concrete), the only one to give a firm estimate (one bid said "I'll tell you how much it will be after I get the sidewalk off the tree roots"), and the only one to offer a warranty on his work. When you are doing thousands of dollars worth of work and won't stand behind it, what kind of a message does that send? The job took three days: one to break up the sidewalk, one to pour and set the concrete, and one to clean up, and it looks great. read more

Aight Yelpers - maybe I'm doing something wrong. Called Yvonne at reception 2 weeks ago and she said Michael would get back to us regarding an estimate and time of visit. I even made sure I stayed home on Friday. No news , nothing. Just dropped the ball. I thought - stuff happens and let it go. Called back and left 2 voicemails. Nothing. Again, I let it go. Called after 1 week and got a hold of Yvonne - she said same thing again. That Michael is working out of town and will call back to schedule something over the weekend. Again nothing. A little tip. If you know ur schedule is booked up, just say so. Don't leave ur customers hanging and waiting that maybe you'll call. I called these guys because of good reviews. Michael Heavy Construction was recently hired to do a sidewalk concrete replacement project at our San Francisco property including modify the driveway to be curb cut. At the same time we also put in a sprinkler system to water the trees outside the property and installed a hose bib. Michael was extremely professional, courteous and knowledgeable. Also worth noting, there was excellent site protection both to ensure the building walls were kept clean and to ensure that the concrete could dry without being damaged. I have since noticed concrete jobs around the city and nobody blocks it off the way that Michael did. I have also recommended him to a friend of mine that owns many properties around the city. I wouldn't use anyone but Michael on anything involving concrete. His work product was outstanding. We welcome the opportunity to work with him again on future projects. read more

Look, I am a single woman and as such I never know if I'm getting the straight story from contractors (or any man in a position to sell me something), so I bravely called MHC to come give me an estimate to cement in my front yard. Mike assessed the situation and provided a variety of solutions, at a very good price, that ultimately ended in my front yard being transformed from mounds of dirt into a lovely and decorative front entrance. They came as called by our General contractor to work on the foundations of our house. They were perfect - clean, polite, respectful, and highly competent and efficients. Sole complain: when they say they show up at 7am - expect them to be at 6:45am in front of house and start the engines at 7:00mn:00s! (which is way too early for me). I had a small rain water harvesting project at a school in San Francisco that had a tiny budget. Mike and his guys came in and made the project work for our budget and did an amazing job. They came in and set up our foundation in no time at all and all the kids were super excited to come by and see the cement getting poured. We contracted Heavey Construction to completely redo the sidewalk, short driveway, and adjacent walkway of my mom's house in San Francisco. The issue was that existing surfaces were exposed aggregate that were falling apart, and not to code. Michael supervised the project while we were gone on vacation, because my mother, who is 96 y.o. and has health issues, and her helpers need access to the garage when at home. Michael got this done and done well, during the time we were in Yosemite. The resulting surfaces are excellent, with just a few touchup items Michael is taking care of now related to the curb. I own an apartment bldg in the Mission and I am in the process of doing the mandatory earthquake retrofit. My contractor had to install a steel beam across the front entrance which ruined the existing mosaic floor from 1912. I got estimates from several tile , terrazzo and concrete contractors. Michaael Heavey was not the cheapest , but he came up with the best solution: Rather than installing tiles over the existing damaged floor, remove the entire mosaic floor and pour new concrete - sloping down 2%. I paid extra for colored concrete and the entry way will look good for many years to come. Not knowing much about concrete, Michael had to 'handhold' me and the job got done with the co-operation of the tenants. read more

Mike Heavey and his crew were amazing. We knew we needed to get our back patio replaced, there was a huge crack and several other ones, and it was just plain old concrete. Heavey showed up to look at it at our scheduled appt time, and I knew within minutes he would be the guy for the job. You could see his passion for the work that he does. We also had a crack sidewalk up front due to the roots of our tree, he priced that out as well as half of our driveway which was in pretty bad shape. After a couple of quotes Heavey wasn't the cheapest, but he was fair and we liked the guys character. When we were set to go, his crew showed up on time in the morning and went to work. They demo'd everything that first day, Heavey showed up to check up on his guys and to give instruction, make sure they weren't goofing off. We decided on a colorstamp for both the front and back. Day 2, they showed up early again and added rebar to the area as well as a stoop design for the back, about 10am, the concrete for the back showed up and heaveys guys were on it, they smoothed it and worked on the design, then a few hours later, the concrete for the front showed up and they worked diligently on it. Heavey was in and out explaining to me what everything would look like and such, kept me informed throughout. He was so accommodating to my wife who had specific ideas. Day 3, the crew came to clean up, power wash and attach part of my fence in which it had no support previously, they added metal brackets in the concrete and now it's rock solid. I couldn't believe how quick and efficient these guys are. Oscar was great, he seemed to be the lead guy. He even had his 2 young sons help out. You can tell how solid his crew is by the way he treats them, he jokes around with them but he is quick to scold if they are not doing it right. I would recommend Mike Heavey to anyone, he does care in the satisfaction of his customers, and just all around a friendly guy. read more

Micheal Heavey and his crew did a great job on our garage floor. Communication, timeliness and quality workmanship were excellent. Mike and his office staff were very responsive - prompt return of calls and on-time for appointments. He offered advice and a range of options from full replacement of our garage floor to patching/replacing portions. We are in a two-condo building in SF Marina District and both owners have to agree to the work. While we desired to replace the whole floor, our neighbor wanted to patch just two locations. Mike worked with us on an affordable option that helped us achieve a good compromise with our neighbor while also achieving replacement of 2/3 of the garage floor. The work was completed as agreed on time and was excellent. We are very happy customers and highly recommend Mike. Definitely will call on him again with any future project. I recently had about 400 square feet of sidewalk replaced by Michael Heavey Construction. From start to finish the job was completed with a very high level of professional expertise. A crew of about 7 men arrived at 7:30 am and worked non stop until the job was finished perfectly at 4:30 pm. Next day they cleaned up completely and did not leave a trace of their work behind.
