My wife and I were looking for coffee and a baked item for breakfast so I set the Nav to Michaeli Bakery. Walking in, the display of available baked goods is different from a typical French bakery. When do you see different flavored Burekas? Forget about all that, I spy with my little eye a almond croissant. Covered with slivered almonds and powered sugar, babka can take a back seat. I grab two coffees, my almond croissant, my wife's spinach and cheese bureka and a chocolate chocolate chip cookie. My wife and are back in the car, sippin' Java and giving each other high fives. She loves her bureka. My almond croissant? The first bite has that flaky delicate crunch. Then, almond paste shows up, hidden beneath all the flaky goodness. I'm in heaven right now. We finished our pastries and I break out the chocolate chocolate cookie. I break off a small piece and we look at each other. Wow! The chocolate is so rich and deep, I was in a daze and almost drove off the west side Highway. 10 Yelp stars, I can't wait to return. read more

Michaeli bakery is truly a hidden gem in the Chinatown area. Its small locale is very cozy and welcoming --as well as the delicious scent of their pastries and breads. Service is very quick and this location is not too crowded, unlike what I've heard about the new location that opened in the UES. On my latest visit I got: Tahini cookies: simple yet very elegant and classic. They come packaged in a very cute blue box so could easily be purchased as a gift for a dinner host/ friend who has a birthday or other special occasion. Small, yet powerfully addicting. These are your version of a peanut butter cookie but, instead, with the richness and flavor of tahini. Perfect amount of sweetness and with a very pleasant crumbly consistency that is not too crunchy but a bit chewy. I'm obsessed with these and could eat the whole box in one sitting. Spinach and feta boureka: amazing puff pastry filled with rich feta cheese and generous bits of spinach. Full of flavor! The combination of the buttery, flaky pastry, salty feta cheese, and spinach is just divine. It also has a nice addition of some texture/extra flavor with the sesame seeds on top. I ate mine at room temperature but I imagine eating it hot might be better! I was a big fan. Chocolate rugelach: another amazing staple. Reminds me of a croissant but a bit more dense and less flaky. Full of rich buttery and chocolate flavors. Not as sweet as I expected so I was pleasantly surprised. Just perfect. My parents who were visiting from LA got this and loved it. This bakery is truly something else. The service is exceptional and the quality of their breads/ pastries/ cookies, no matter if they are savory or sweet, is just extremely high. On Fridays they sell challah which you can call for and ask about availability in advance (had I had more room in my hands for carrying things that morning, I would have 100% gotten a loaf... looked delicious!) Excellent pastries and babka. Preordered because they tend to sell out of certain items early. Got the rugelach, cheesy twist, plain croissant, cinnamon roll and babka. Everything was flaky and fresh, cinnamon roll is more of a danish. Babka was delicious and would order again but I believe they only offer it on Friday and Sunday. Vegan options also available. There are lots of appetizing pastry posts from Michaeli Bakery on Instagram recently and we were so excited before our visit. The exterior decor is humble but the interior is artsy, bright and cozy. There was a great variety of options and we had a hard time making up our mind. The staff was friendly and introduced all their signature pastries with patience. We ended up bringing home 4 pieces: Almond Croissant, Pizza Burekas, Potato Burekas, Kugelhupf and one loaf of Halva Babka. Their pastries were overall delicious and the texture was delicate. Our favorites were their savory options, Pizza Burekas and Potato Burekas. The Pizza Burekas was flavorful, filled with cheese and bacon. The layer of Potato Burekas was so crunchy and matched with pumpkin seeds. The Almond Croissant and Kugelhupf wasn't our type, we prefer the texture to be more crispy for croissant, soft for Kugelhupf, so we were a little disappointed. Even with the not-so-perfect part, it's still a place we will visit again shortly to try other options. read more

If someone who works there reads this review, I apologize again for the difficulty. Thanks for the early morning delivery. On Wednesday in the early morning at work I was looking for a place which sold pastries and on Caviar, I found this place which surprised me in two ways; that it was open and that they delivered to where I work in the upper 20s. It took a good while longer for the order then I expected but they were on point with updates and the place is pretty far away from me. A woman called on the phone asking whether the other was received and at that point I hadn't. I got an email back saying that it couldn't be delivered but thankfully I had picked it up already. Anyway all the hassle aside: I got two orders of the Linzer Crumble Cookie Package which they describe as "A package of delicate shortbread cookies with raspberry jam and crumble." They don't mention how addictive they are and both packages were finished very quickly. They were sweet but not too sweet with a delicate balance between the excellently made streusel topping and the tart filling. Overall they were fantastic and I am looking forward to trying their other pastries (especially their babka) though preferably in person. Fantastic new bakery. read more

I've wanted to check this place out ever since we had dinner outdoors at Kiki's across the street last summer. As we happened to be taking a long walk downtown on a sunny Saturday afternoon and wanted to stop for some little something that'd fuel our walk back home, and we were nearing the LES, I remembered (had actually bookmarked) Michaeli and off we went! It was nearly 4 pm, so there wasn't much to choose from. Almost everything there is chocolate. Chocolate babka. Chocolate filled hamantaschen. Chocolate rugelach. But while I love me some good dark chocolate, my husband isn't as big a fan and we were sharing. There were 4 danishes in the case - 1 cinnamon roll, 1 cheese, and 2 vanilla raisin. And in the case to the left of that, I saw bourekas. I LOVE bourekas! And fresh mushroom bourekas were just coming out of the oven! I wound up with a vanilla raisin danish to share while we sat at the one little table out front, and it was really delicious! Sweet and satisfying but not cloying. Yum, I'd have that again in a heartbeat. And I bought 2 bourekas to accompany whatever I was going to make for dinner that night. Their bourekas are on the small side. I bought one mushroom and one spinach. I thought the pastry was perfectly flaky and seeded amply, and they had cheese inside of course, but we both thought the vegetable part of the filling was pretty skimpy. They were tasty enough, though, heated in the toaster oven. Had a lovely conversation with the young woman behind the counter. On a high shelf behind her was a row of packaged chocolate babka, apparently their specialty, and I asked if they ever make cinnamon babka, but she told me they don't. However, she said sometimes they have halvah babka! Oh, I do love a bit of Middle Eastern halvah now and then! I'm going to have to try that if it's there when we're back down on Division Street! I was walking around the area and stumbled upon this small Israeli bakery. There were so many options but the kind gentlemen answered all my questions and even gave me recommendations. Pricing seemed standard for bakery pricing (+ considering its in New York City). I decided to try rhetoric chocolate rugelach and the weekend special, za'atar and goat cheese boureka. FOOD RATINGS: Chocolate rugelach - 4.5. Crunchy and buttery on the outside yet moist on the inside. It wasn't too sweet, yet there was a nice contrast with the homemade Nutella (could taste the bits of hazelnuts). Za'atar and goat cheese boureka - 5.5. SO DELICIOUS!!! I miss it so much and if I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely get this. It was salty enough to enjoy and although unfamiliar, the za'atar combined well with the melted goat cheese. It was buttery and decadent in a great way. I'm not sure how to explain what za'atar tastes like, but if you're a fan of middle eastern or mediterranian food/spices, you're sure to enjoy this one. read more

The perfect pastry doesn't exi-. I have only tried the babka, but it was PHENOMENAL. 2022 is the year of the babka for me, and I have been trying babkas left and right in NYC. Bread's Bakery has been the mark to beat for me for years in NYC, but the chocolate babka at Michaeli Bakery blew me away. 11/10. The chunks of chocolate, the flakiness. It's on a quieter street in LES (across the street from Kiki's), but definitely worth going out of your way for. My top babka in NYC right now! Goes great with coffee. The ones from Breads Bakery are known to be the best, and this bakery's owner is from Breads. These custard filled donuts are much lighter and fluffier than any donut deserves to be. This place is on a tiny street at the end of Division Street just North of Chinatown. Visited three times already in two weeks and probably ate too much for my own good but all the pastries are sooooo delicious and unique. In total by now have tried chickpea curry, mushroom and cheese, galil, halva croissant, rugalach, poppyseeds and hazelnut. My favourite are all the savoury ones. They taste so flavored and light at the same time. I had them has a light brunch or dinner along with a green smoothie. Highly recommend all the savoury options! Absolutely loved the chickpea curry, mushroom and cheese and galil. The latter had a hint of honey taste, cheese and za'atar spice and no sugar added. Stopped by this place after learning that it was opened by a chef over at Breads! I went at 8:30 in the morning and there were not any babkas yet which was a little disappointing. However, overall I was blown away by the quality of the pastries. I got the chocolate rugelahs, cheese danish and almond croissant. All three were AMAZING and so flavorful! I went to Breads on the same day and the rugelachs here are better- bigger and softer. They also have challah bread on fridays which I saw stocked full on the shelves! This is up there on my list. I wanted to try a few items before leaving a review, so here are the goodies I've had so far in the times I've went: Chocolate layer cake - probably the weakest of the bunch. Frosting is very good (rich and thick, like fudge) but the cake itself is dry. The gluten-free kind of dry. 6.5/10 Cheesecake - a dense slab of pure heaven. It's thicker than Two Little Red Hens, with a flour crust instead of your usual graham cracker crust (which I 100% support). Only gripe is that it's $8 plus tax, which is more expensive than most, and the slice is smaller than usual. Cake itself is a 9.5/10 though. They're also serving a version of it called "alfa cheesecake" which is basically the same thing but with alfajores cookie chunks at the bottom. Genius. Spinach bureka - burekas are what they're known for and this totally held up. It's also got some cheese in there. So flaky, so soft in the center. 10/10. Sidenote: One thing I will say that mildly concerns me is when I got my cheesecake in the late morning, it was the last slice. So, either it's so popular it's already gone by 11 am, or it's from yesterday... (If it's the latter, then shame shame shame especially considering the cost). read more

Saw this on yelp and had to try. Came by on a quiet evening and the place wasn't packed. We went in and the employer was very friendly. Took his time and explained some of the pastries as well as his recommendations. I had the chocolate layer cake and a rugelach with a cup of oat milk. The chocolate layer cake was very rich and thick, but not overly sweet. I'd say it was a good balance between rich and sweetness. It does make your mouth a bit dry, which makes me glad I asked for a cup of oat milk. The rugelach was tasty. Wasn't heavy and made me want more after each bite. The taste was superb, with a good amount of chocolate. (As you can tell, I love chocolate) Definitely a great place to stop in and grab some pastries and catch up. read more

This is a hidden hidden gem, to a point where I don't even want to write a review because it is so good!! Everything that they bake here is euphorically delicious!! The new bakery from Adir Michaeli, who worked with Breads Bakery for several years, just opened on the quiet stretch of Division Street that is only lively once Kiki's across the street is open for dinner. I got here early on opening day out of excitement to try all the stuff, and could already smell the strong scent of the Chocolate Babka while waiting on the bench out front. As this is now the claim to fame for Breads Bakery, you should definitely try this one, though don't miss some of the other more unique stuff here, like a bunch of savory options and the soon to come vegan doughnut. read more

Michaeli bakery has been on my list of places to try in New York since it opened a few years ago. Unfortunately, my list of places to list is never ending, so I only just made it here in January 2021. We came on a Sunday, just before noon. The staff are in masks and require customers to wear masks inside as well, but there seems to be no maximum limit for customers, although there are markers on the floor to enforce distancing. I'm a big fan of Breads Bakery's chocolate babka, so we got one loaf (no slices unfortunately), two alfajores cookies, and one pizza boureka. Alfajores is a cookie found in some European and South American countries, and can be most easily described as a sandwich cookie, filled with dulce de Leche. I'd never had one before. Michaeli's was very soft on the outside with sprinklings of coconut and sweet dulce de leche on the outside. It was quite good. The chocolate babka was not quite as good as the one I remembered from Breads Bakery. The outside was a bit hard and I'm not sure if the one I got had been baked that day. The interior was sweet, with pieces of Nutella running throughout. I would probably get more of the other pastries and bourekas next time rather than the babka. Service was pleasant and quick. Would recommend for something sweet in the Lower east side area. read more

Absolutely delicious. I am super surprised by this babka style bakery. It is in a spot where you would have to look for it. Place is tiny but do offer outdoor and indoor seatings. They look like caring and nice and answer all questions that you have. We indulge the babka feast so fast that I forgot to take a pic. Michaels Bakery has been on my list for a while and I was finally able to stop by on Christmas morning to pick up some pastries. They surprisingly had a big selection for Christmas Day. I got a mushroom boureka, spinach and cheese boureka, and a chocolate babka. The bourekas were super flaky, but the mushroom didn't have much filling. Michaeli is probably one of my favorite finds from just walking around the area. I stopped in on a Saturday evening, only an hour or so before closing, tempted by the smell of fresh bread. The employee at the counter was really helpful and friendly, and there was clear signage and displays for their specials of the day as well. I was excited to see that they had vegan options - I can't handle butter and often struggle with finding pastries or richer baked goods that I can eat. I ended up getting a loaf of their vegan sesame challah, which I pretty much inhaled by myself over the next few days despite the loaf being "family size". It was fluffy, a little sweet, and seriously delicious. Since then, I've followed them on Instagram and they've got a very active feed with seasonal and holiday specials. They bake everything fresh each day, and are really pumping up vegan options - even filled donuts! I hope to be able to stop by again soon. read more

Ok so they're known for the babka first and foremost. The classic chocolate babka was good but not the best in nyc. Chocolatey but a little fry in the dough. Their vegan babka I thought was actually better (just as much chocolate, less dry) and probably the best vegan babka I've had. The rugelach was good but also not my favorite, as well as the hamantashen. But the halwa croissant was excellent! Like a great chocolate almond croissant but better and deeper flavor from the sesame. read more
