How could someone say that there is one bakery that serves the best rugelach? Especially for everyone out there was a bubby that has cooking skills beyond normal comprehension. I'm standing my ground on this one though... the rugelach here is nearly the perfect bit of food. It's only more perfect on an NYC spring day with an iced coffee on the other hand. I work around the area and what drew me in was the smell of their pastries from the outside, it smelled amazing. Great great bakery, such a gem in Lower East Side! Everything they make--from sweet to savory pastries--are bomb. Croissants--they make a few different kinds but I prefer the original; it's so perfectly flaky and buttery, I don't think I've had better to be quite honest. The honey cake was really good ($12) which is pricey. I thought the cake to cream ratio was good and the cake was fluffly. I would have given this place a 5 stars, but the service was a bit unprofessional. I thought the staff was helpful and explained the cakes well. However, as I was about to eat my last bite. The staff had gotten on the phone and very loudly said, "I hate this shift. I want to leave work. The customers don't tip on this shift." Then, I took my last bite of the cake less enthusiastically and suddenly did not feel so generous to leave a tip in the jar. Please refrain from having personal calls in front of customers, especially if it is too bad mouth or complain. It is unprofessional. Obsessed with this cute bakery. The chef is Israeli and he makes the most amazing pastries. Everything is super fresh and when it sells out that's it...you're out of luck. The croissants are fantastic, the rugelach is one of the best I've had. The challah bread is airy and soft. The specialty is the babka, and they have it in chocolate, hazelnut poppy, and cinnamon... I liked the cinnamon! What definitely stoke my heart was the honey cake.... delicious layers of crepe like cake filled with honey and yogurt... it's a must! Try the Kugelhopf! I had two! It's crunchy, nutty, sweet... like a cake / muffin type goodness. Also there are savory options Burekas... empanada types staffed with feta and spinach or potato... all delicious. The cookie was both crisp and soft. The caramel was mildly sweet. The cookie is reasonably priced around $4. There's no indoor or outdoor dining at the bakery. Michael is, however, located in a hip area where it's fun to walk around and people watch while enjoying a baked good. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the baked goods in the shop. This place has been on my list for a while and I finally found the time to make a trip downtown. Burekas are one of my favorite savory pastries and I love the ones from Breads Bakery so was very excited to try theirs. Unfortunately, I can't eat goat/sheep products and most of their savory options contain feta so I grabbed myself a potato bureka. Upon the first bite, I could tell the pastry dough was amazing. The potato filling, however, was a bit bland to my taste. Between this and the one from Breads Bakery, I think I prefer the latter since the filling is more flavorful and pungent. I came in to Michaeli bakery after work the other day. I love that they are open until 7pm! A lot of bakeries close so early so I usually can't go. The woman working was really nice and answered my questions about the pastries (since they aren't the best labeled). It was so hard to choose. I limited myself to 2 pastries since I wanted all of them. But it gives me a reason to go back then! I decided on the chocolate almond croissant and the chocolate halva cookie. The croissant was to die for! For sure my favorite in the city that I've tried thus far. I'm a sucker for a chocolate almond croissant so I can never pass them up when I come across one since they aren't all that common. There was a good helping of chocolate in the center, spread all over the croissant. It's always disappointing when the first bite you take had all the chocolate and then the rest is just meh. The almond filling was delicious as well and the almond crumble on top was generous. The chocolate halva cookie was good as well! I got it because it's so unique! Stepping into Michaeli you already know it's gonna be good, it's like you're IN a buttery pastry! I was in town for the weekend and wanted to bring back some babkas back home. You know a place is legit when it has that warm buttery aroma as you pass by. It's a small store that doesn't allow for sitting but like most places, it's grab and go pastries for breakfast. There's no price listed with the display case of pastries and I felt bad asking what certain items were as I couldn't distinguish certain flavors so make sure to look at their menu on their website first. The spicy cheese sticks is something I normally wouldn't get but it was recommended to me by a friend and it had a nice kick to it! It made for a very good savory option. The almond croissant was perfectly crunchy and light at the same time. The linzer crumble cookie was a perfect sized gift to give to friends/family- great for sharing over tea or coffee. The chocolate rugalah was on point, perfect size as a snack and great hit of choco. A really cute space across the street from Kiki's and down the block from the back end of the post office. You may walk by and not notice it however your nose will be way more accurate than you eyes. Very nice space with tons of babka on the wall. We tried the kugelpof? Which was like an airy citrus almond pastry with the texture of muffin and sponge cake. Very light and delicious. Also got the babka- if you are familiar with breads bakery- it's essentially the same- price is 12 bucks. However my other colleague got the rugalah and melted in their mouth. I resisted getting one though cuz it was 2 dollars a piece but I will try it myself next time as it looked and sounded sublime. This place is soooo good why didn't I know it earlier??? I was really hungry, but it's still not the excuse for me to inhale 3 burekas in 15 mins (and taking large bites from the remaining two). I had potato, pizza and cheese burekas, all are amazing. The dough is flaky without being overly oily. Tho if u don't like goat cheese stay away from the cheese one. The cinnamon roll is a bit too oily&sweet for me. But ppl with big sweet tooth & super flaky pastry lovers will love it. Thrilled to have finally made it, and taken down half of the inventory. OK, we didn't go that crazy, but it certainly would have been easy to. Everything is baked fresh daily (on site), and the results are in the flavors. My potato boreka vanished in seconds, the chocolate rugelach put up a valiant fight but didn't last much longer, and my friend could have qualified for the Olympics in the record time he polished off his cheese boreka. Wish they'd had slices of the babka available because we wanted to try that as well, but didn't have it in us to order an entire one. Next time for sure. It took us a while to order because we had trouble narrowing down our choices from all the incredible options, but the staff provided some great recommendations. We finally decided on the mushroom bureka, potato bureka, chocolate rugalach, and chocolate babka. The burekas were everything I wanted in a savory pastry: wonderfully flavorful with the perfect textural combination of delicately flaky yet deliciously chewy (my mouth is watering again just thinking about it.) The rugalach was likewise light and flaky, and was rich and chocolately without being overpoweringly sweet. We haven't yet had the babka, but my expectations are now incredibly high. When I heard the baker for Breads opened his own business I've been meaning to check it out. Finally made it over this weekend and got a little bit of everything. All the pastries I tried were top notch - chocolate babka, almost croissant, that raspberry cookie, rugelach, raisin danish and alfajores. My favorite so far was surprisingly the alfajores and it was my first time trying it. Not too sweet and it's made out of this soft crumbly cookie with a leche jam and coconut on the outside. Perfect with a hot cup of tea! The staff was super friendly and helpful as well. I wanted to try out the coconut mango log but it was a bit pricey, a small slice was $8. I'll try it out some other time. The only down side is the location. Took the F to E. Broadway. Wish it was more easily accessible but I guess it's one way for me to control my sugar craving. read more

I've been a HUGE fan of this bakery since they opened. Everything is incredible! I love coming here for the Jewish holidays and trying the special desserts they have: the sufganiyot were incredible I came back a second time to get more for my friends and family. Also a huge fan of the bourekas, babka, and rugelach- they are always fresh and taste amazing. I haven't tried the coffee but my friend did and she was a fan.
