I've considered visiting Michael's for years, but did not finally pull the trigger until last week. We visited on a Friday shortly after 11:00. The restaurant has an old school ambiance. It is rather sparsely decorated with bare wood tables. During our visit only one other table, maybe two by the time we left, was occupied. The restaurant purports to make the popular Mac's salad from back in the day so I was looking forward to seeing if when I tasted it, it would be familiar to me after what, thirty-five or forty years? It was not but it was quite enjoyable though rather smallish we thought for $14. We decided to share the chicken fried steak. One has the option of a small or a large portion. We went with the large which consisted of two pieces of steak perfectly sized for us, mashed potatoes and Italian style green beans. The crisp and tastily seasoned breading on the CFS was really, really good as was the chipotle-black pepper cream gravy that accompanied it. I requested more and our very pleasant and efficient young served promptly delivered it to the table. The Italian cut green beans were Southern cooking nirvana. So good! Out front there is a oak shaded patio/deck that would be so enjoyable in pleasant weather. Well, definitely visit again, probably this fall to enjoy a meal on the deck. read more

I'm a big fan of the food at Michael's and many items have been staples over the years but what I love the most are the specials. Yesterday I had the fried catfish with fried okra, hush puppies and fries.. The fish was brined which made it delicious. I don't eat fries so maybe next time he has this special I'll get extra okra. Tonight I had the crawfish. It was delicious. Not pre-cooked like most restaurants. And the presentation inside newspaper was special. If you're not a catfish or crawfish kind of person, they do have some of the best beef sliders I've ever had. But the gem of this restaurant is their bartender and fireplace. My husband and I visited for the first time last night and WOW it was delicious!! It's in an unassuming strip mall so I was expecting it to be mediocre but the food was well worth the wait. My husband ordered chicken fried steak and I got the pepper crusted beef tenderloin. While I was eating it I was already planning my next visit in lol. The mashed potatoes were heavenly, and the green beans were really really good. It felt like comfort food! We also ordered the quail appetizer and that was seriously so good. Overall, I like Michael's Cuisine. They have a hour cocktail menu, which is wonderful. The food was good, however I ordered the salad with the fried goat cheese (I've had it many times) and this time it was so so sooo spicy. I have no idea how or why they made the salad dressing so hot, my mouth and lips were burning for the rest of the night. I told the server it was VERY hot, so they were aware. This was a special restaurant that my wife and I enjoyed back in the day. We would celebrate anniversaries, birthdays etc. Hadn't been in years so thought it would be a fun night of remembrance. Instead it was.....Requiem of a dying restaurant It started with the host asking if we had a reservation. We did not, but there were only two tables seated. Awkward interaction as we decided where to sit. lol Service was bare minimum. No greeting. No suggestions. No banter at all. Got our drinks just fine. Margarita was okay. Apparently they don't have red wine glasses anymore. Appetizers arrived. Jalapeño shrimp was meh and when the server poured my wife's tortilla soup from about 3ft above her bowl it splashed on the table. Soup was not good. Very concentrated flavor like it had been reduced way too long. We didn't finish either dish. Server didn't seem to wonder/care why. So we just took the clues, tabbed out and left before we wasted our time and money on entrees and dessert. Although we used to love their crème brûlée with the raspberries! Looks like this restaurant is living off the Ancho bar patrons and has lost their passion in the dining room. I could tell the staff didn't care we were there or cared if we came back. Just sliders. There were 5 tables occupied in the entire restaurant at the time. Server seemed completely lost. Food was average at best. Yikes! What a disappointment! The Facebook reviews on this place are nowhere near the reality of the quality of food or drinks. My husband ordered an old fashion, $14 which is on point, however this was so watered down he couldn't even taste the whiskey. Moving on to the michaelscuisine "classic" goat cheese with raspberry chipotle vinaigrette, or lack-thereof, the raspberry sauce was sparse and they might as well have left it off. You couldn't taste it whatsoever. Moving onto the Dry Aged, Prime Beef Ribeye, $45. I can say with 100% certainty I have never eaten a ribeye with less flavor. It didn't look like a ribeye, taste like a ribeye, and was definitely way overpriced. I can say it was not overcooked. That's a plus, I guess. The sautéed mushrooms were way too spicy. The mashed potatoes were as flavorless as the steak. Even the Dr Pepper was lacking in carbonation and was flat. I went here with my dad, mom, and sister. The ambiance was a bit weird, it was dark and not a lot of people. However, the service was nice and our server refilled our waters regularly. Since I was on a diet, I got the teriyaki salad. I wasn't expecting much because it was a salad, but when it came out, it looked beautiful. The wait for the food was kind of long but it was worth it. I loved the salad, even if I don't enjoy salads much often. The teriyaki chicken was good, crispy, and the salad complemented it well. The chicken was so good even my picky 9 year old sister kept reaching over for more. My mom and sister also enjoyed the daily pasta special. The pasta was just alfredo but it was surprisingly light and delicious. My dad got here later and ordered a hamburger and tortilla soup (not pictured). He thought it was decent. Went with the family for an early Friday night dinner. We were a little hard up for a place to eat and ended up here. The atmosphere is pretty much what you would expect from a restaurant in a strip mall. Old, cheesy and couple of Texas flags for good measure. The service was absolutely excellent though as we had a fussy toddler and our waitress was very accommodating. Got some food quick to the little one so we didn't annoy everyone around us with a melt down. Aside from that the menu was fairly limited, the drinks were ridiculously expensive and the food was just ok. Very bland. As Michael told me, he learned from Jimmy and George Bannos of Heaven on Seven and the Purple Pig (Chicago, IL) fame. In terms of the quality of the food, this has been one of my favorite restaurants for over 20 years. A few things that I found disappointing: the goat cheese appetizer was outstanding but huge!! I would have served about half of that and--perhaps--charged $9-10, instead of $15. The entrees were just the right size: ancho chili tenderloin for me, fish of the day for my dining companion. With that said, I'm not a big fan of TVs throughout the dining room. What other "fine dining" establishment has that? This is not supposed to be a sports bar! The adjoining bar, yes! The dining room no! The dining room and bar was mostly empty (maybe because the TCU game was being played in town) and our young server did a good job overall. He admitted that he had only worked there a month and his inexperience showed at times. For example, between courses, the crumbs on the table should have been cleaned up. Inexplicably, the manager on duty walked by half a dozen times nearby two tables that had not been cleared for over an hour. I stared at one throughout my meal and my dining companion stared at another one throughout hers. If you're not going to clear the tables yourself, at least delegate someone to do it! Will we be back? Yes! The competition is fierce in this part of town but to earn a 5-star review, Michaels needs to step it up a notch. I've not been for dinner yet, so I'll reserve the star sway for that eventuality, but I got a kick out of my first stop into Michael's tonight, tucked into the corner slot of an also somewhat under the radar strip center off the deeper recesses of West 7th. It's an interesting and warm arrangement. There's little disputing that Michael's is cozy, from the first step in, past the piano to the back corner bar (featuring a few Texas spirits, including some hard to get ones), and Negro Modelo on tap, they had me locked in for a relaxed sip or three. There seems to be a fairly loyal local crowd that huddles each night, and not necessarily conventional crowds at that (at least that's the way it played this evening...the many regulars didn't seem to fit a single profile, but they all seemed equally enamored). The thing that these folks had in common, at least on my first pop in, was a sense of comfort, and that was prevailing enough to spread smiles. My take isn't comprehensive, and I'm looking forward to learning more, but there is a pervasive vibe here, and I'll be eager to return in search of validation or correction. First visit to Michael's on the recommendation of a friend, and we (family of 4) walked in on a Sunday evening. This review is going to be a bit all over the place, so follow what you can. Ambiance is fine, with an open floor plan in the restaurant and the bar set off to another part of the space. It was 1/2 full and quiet at 7p on a Sunday, so not sure what the vibe is when it's busy. The patrons looked to be folks that live in the neighborhood and probably come here regularly. The whole place has that sort of casual, 'been-here-a-bunch' kind of feel, where regulars are their main source of revenue. Our waiter was 'ok', as he wasn't engaging or personable but did the base-line of information delivery and order taking. Bread, water, drinks all came when they should have, and the 1 roll we were given was excellent with the table-provided olive oil. None of the staff seemed really enamored to be working there, but maybe that's due to a slow Sunday. There's no kid menus, or options that were offered for our 8 & 10 year old, which is fine by us, but notable for anyone expecting chicken tenders or mac & cheese. We ordered salmon on a bed of spaghetti for the kids to split, and then ordered individual salads for the wife and I, and ordered the crab cake entree to split. In short, the food was EXCELLENT. The kids' salmon was very tasty, and their spaghetti was clearly fresh pasta in a light lemon butter that was perfect with the fish. We took most of the pasta home and we're glad we did - it made for a gourmet lunch the next day. The salads were good - a little small for $7 or $8 but enough and very fresh. Our crab cake dish was outstanding, both the crabcakes themselves and the side of fresh veggies that we sauteed in some kind of goodness. Again, light but very savory. They hit us for a $7.50 split plate charge for my wife and I to share the crab cakes, but did not get us for a split plate charge for the kids. This is the most overpriced ripoff in town. We ordered two Chopin martini as on the rocks. Eighteen dollars apiece for a very poorly prepared martini was inflated by charging another five dollars for blue cheese olives and six dollars for on the rocks (?). I was brought a original Macs House Salad in a dinner size on s small plate and my wife was brought the same on a larger plate. We were charged $9 for each. The salads come no place close to the Macs House salad. The chicken fried steak was more crust than steak and is certainly not something that I would ever order again. We complained to the manager about the martinis and he responded "that's what we charge. I said that is outrageous and he said "I will tell my owner" I responded "you can tell your owner we will not be back." Really bad place! read more
