We had a great visit to Michael's on a very cold day. I ventured in first to make sure they were open and they were (just didn't look like it). We were one of only two tables at the time but we were swiftly greeted by a very friendly server. We had so many delicious items - eggs and pancakes and the hot chocolate! That was a meal in itself. Really reasonable prices as well. The spot is sort of dark, but very clean (including a very clean bathroom), so it was perfect for a no frills, delicious breakfast. Portion sizes were good - we ended up taking eggs and French toast and more home and we were stuffed. Great spot, friendly staff, not a place you'd take a date (well, maybe if you are a college student), but warm and inviting with delicious, freshly made food. read more

Milwaukee has lost another classic and been replaced with an inferior substitution. This was a long time bookmark that was open at 6am on the 4th of July so I stopped by for breakfast, I like going out for breakfast on holidays before cooking. The place is very old looking and kind of dumpy/dive with lots of wood and mirrors to make the place look bigger. The breakfast menu in not very big but it has all the usual breakfast items. I was going to keep it simple with eggs, meat and toast. I was seated and watered immediately and I had no issues with the service. I ordered the two eggs with sausage patties, hash browns and toast. The toast was the generic/commercial three only, white/wheat/rye and nothing better. I ordered my hash browns with onions which were kind of hard with slightly under cooked potatoes. The eggs were perfect sunny side up. The sausage patties were thin and nothing special. The generic wheat toast was nothing special, a good piece of bread should always be an option with breakfast. Overall this was a super average breakfast and nothing special so I would not be back because Milwaukee has better options around. read more

Definitely known more as a breakfast or late night sptot, I decided to make a stop in for lunch during the COVID-19 chaos. I opted for the gyro meat club sandwich. Knew I was rolling the dice with this one. It was literally a triple decker club sandwich (lettuce, tomato, mayo) with gyro meat. While the gyro meat was flavorful, the combination of everything just didn't seem to go too well on toast. I've never had gyro meat with mayo in my many travels, so after the first quarter of the sammy, my tastebuds forced me to wipe the remainder off before completing the sandwich. Fries were slightly above average, with a nice crispiness. I'd give it two stars for the food, but three for the awesome customer service and passive portion sizes. Just keep in mind that it's a diner, not somewhere you go for a five course meal. read more

We were looking for a breakfast place and decided to try Michaels. I thought looking like a local down home type place that was pretty busy it would be really good. We were greeted promptly and seated. All the staff we interacted with were very nice. The food was no where near what I expected. It lacked taste. Also while sitting there there was music playing in the dinning room with a different station playing in the kitchen. Both different types of music ran over each other. I try to support local non franchise restaurants. Especially now, the ones who survived the pandemic shut down. Came in on a Wednesday morning. Pretty quiet, and I was seated right away. Waitress was very friendly, food came out super speedy (I ordered the veggie skillet and added feta to make it a bit more Greek), and the skillet was honestly delicious. Last time I went to a diner in this part of Milwaukee, it was Miss Katie's, and I wasn't overly impressed, since they undercooked my over easy eggs (visibly raw egg white). Michael's cooked my eggs perfectly and everything tasted very good together. The meal was only about 20 minutes (and like $15 after tip, super reasonable). I was very appreciative of the expedient service. Definitely will come back next time I'm in the area. read more

The pancakes reminded me of how good pancakes can be, the bacon had a slight maple flavor, and they cooked the over-medium eggs to perfection. All for 7.95. I tried to dodge hotel food for local but I came up short on this run. Before I cut it I will say the service was excellent. I ordered a Mexican skillet. The eggs were solid (hard to fuck up) but the entire plate had nothing to give it Mexican flavor. No cilantro (asked), no salsa or even pico and no seasoning on any of it! (Which is why so many cornball white people give this place 5 stars ). I ate unseasoned eggs, green peppers, onions and steak bites over undercooked home fries. My toast was dollar store bread but it was well buttered. Once I was done I realized the decor and theme were also sub standard. I think thats the bland food regret talking however. read more

With so many choices of places to eat in Milwaukee, Michael's isn't usually on anyone's short list, but it should be. I've tried a few places near the Avenues West area for breakfast and I have to say, Michael's never disappoints. My son and I have been here many times and every time we're satisfied with our visit. The place is old, I won't lie. The decor is so tacky and dated but it's clean. The food though: who would have thought. Honest, fresh, always exactly as ordered. Even pleasantly surprised that their biscuits are fresh made! We've had their skillets, which are good and filling...as well as their pancakes, light and fluffy...and I've had their biscuits and gravy...meh on the gravy but I will order again just for those biscuits! I'm a Chicago suburban native but have lived in the south off and on for a good portion of my adult life. The south is all about their biscuits and Michael's would put up a fight with any good southern biscuit! Ok, I'm a little thrilled about such a staple. This place is definitely a greasy spoon, so you can't expect anything too out of the ordinary. It's smoky, always crowded, the waitresses have crazy teased-out '80s hair with party bangs, and they serve the typical greasy spoon diner fare. However, there is one reason why I love this restaurant and I will be sure to return here when I return to Milwaukee: they serve a Polish sausage skillet at breakfast. That's right, suckers. Pure Milwaukee Polish sausage with three eggs, cheddar cheese, potatoes, green peppers, and onions. Oh yeah. It's a dream come true. I can't really vouch for the rest of the menu because I haven't tried anything but this skillet, but I'm sure you can expect the best of greasy spoon eats. The Polish sausage skillet, however, just might make up for any mishaps that may arise with any meals that are less-than-par. But I don't know if there are any less-than-par meals. Ugh. It wasn't truly my choice. I need to eat in walking distance, it was either this place or the Taco Bell in the next block that scares even the locals off. I placed an order to go, and the service was friendly and quick. (Or course, I only ordered a burger and fries, but still. No pat-downs here.) The burger was an "olive burger" with bacon and cheese. That meant the patty was covered in sliced green onions. And when I tell you that the burger was flavorless, I wish I could put it into more meaningful words and images. If flavor came in tree form, this burger would have been the Gobi desert. Only worse were the fries. Again, it's like they have a secret "bland" spice that they soak everything in. We absolutely love Michael's for American style food. Tonight we had the fried chicken and it was delicious. The breading is seasoned nicely, it's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. My daughter got French fries, which are the steak fry variety. I got mashed potatoes and gravy. The meal comes with soup, coleslaw, and rolls. My daughter had the chicken macaroni soup, and said it was really good other than the noodles being a little mushy. I had the cream of broccoli, which was really good. It only took about 30 minutes to get to us and everything was piping hot still. The delivery person was super polite and accommodating. There's so much food on this plate for under $10, half is being saved for lunch tomorrow. We will definitely be ordering from Michael's, again. read more

I ate here one Fri. evening after checking into The Ambassador Hotel a few doors down. It was recommended to me when I asked at the front desk for a diner or anyplace walking distance from the hotel that wasn't fast food. Sure enough, a 24 hr. diner less than a block away, perfect! I had the fish fry, wanting to try a Milwaukee tradition. Unfortunately, no option for potato pancakes, but the food was good and inexpensive. My waitress was friendly and fast. Fast forward to much later the same night when I met up with my boyfriend who had gone without a meal since lunchtime and it was now after 1am. I mentioned Michael's and he called in an order for pick-up. Thank GOD he did because the clientele and atmosphere had done a complete 360 from when I ate my dinner at 8:00pm! My boyfriend was patted down by the uniformed guards (the most thorough pat-down he ever got in his life - the TSA could learn a lot from these guys!) before we could enter the restaurant and my bag was searched. A large sign was taped on the door: NO WEAPONS ALLOWED. Several rowdy males were thrown out by security. When we allowed inside, they were still putting together our order so we had to stand at the counter for a few minutes which felt like hours due to the noise and tension in the place. Security removed two more customers for yelling at a female about being a "dirty bird b*tch!!" over and over. What a scene. Anyway, avoid after 10pm and you should be good.
