[This review is of the Mickey's Diner off West Seventh Street, not downtown Saint Paul.] Okay, I'm usually one to love this kind of diner, but our experience yesterday was nothing special. The good stuff: Personable, friendly staff. We sat at the counter and were enthralled with the way the cook juggled everything from pancakes and meat on the grill to dozens of pieces of bread through the toaster, along with the constant rotation of made-to-order eggs. The not-so-good stuff: Hash browns were over-cooked and tasted like the stuff the cook was scraping off the grill. Pancakes were a little too leaden, although they did a good job of soaking up the maple syrup to compensate. Charging me 65 cents for two tablespoons of rubbery canned mushrooms in my omelette was a little much. And adding a single slice of processed cheese is a buck twenty? Say it isn't so! I'll give this place another try if I'm in the neighborhood, but won't go out of my way for them. read more

This is the second location of Mickey's down the street- not the dining car location. Very divey looking inside and out, but sometimes that can be charming... not so much here though. Just looks kind of old and run down. Service was fine, and food was okay. Got scrambled eggs, hash browns "O'Brian" (with peppers and onions) and hubby had the jumbo french toast. Food was decent, just nothing to write home about, and definitely have had better at Waffle House. Kind of want to visit the original location because it looks so neat and retro but if the food is the same I'm not even interested. There is nothing that sets this place apart. read more

This location is not my fave, but it does the trick for what you want. Mickey's is just like...staple. For those nights that you are out late and get a hankering for some food, Mickey's will always be there for you. It's like the 'Friends' theme song. Greasy and easy. I don't get why everyone is hating on this place, it was perfect! Yes it is a dive, yes it is a dinner, but what are you expecting? On my most recent trip to Minnesota we took the red eye (pretty usual for us) but all the places we wanted to stop and get breakfast at were either out of the way or closed, so as we passed Mickey's I said lets go there. I'm so glad we did. It was freezing cold outside, we were bone tired, and I was hungry. I got an order of blueberry pancakes with a side of bacon. Heaven! Pure heaven! The pancakes were some of the best I have ever had. Fluffy, buttery, and the blueberries were so juicy. The bacon was thick and crunchy. I couldn't have asked for anything more. This place is perfect for when you are tired, have traveled far, or had a late night. Curl up in a booth, have some comfort food, and just let the warmth of this place soak in. 9/100 read more

My husband and I eat here regularly! There is a trick to getting really great service: go in the middle of the night or in the early morning. Their night crew is hilarious, and once they get to know you, they never forget what you order - after not going in for months, our drinks still beat us to the table because they recognized us by our car. The food is the normal greasy spoon style food, but do not leave without having the O'Brien's hash browns. They are the best in the cities. They have great French toast as well, and I love that their food is serviced locally (I don't think they get anything from outside the 494/694 loop). Definitely a fun spot if you like to grease it up every once in a while, and there is enough variety in the menu that just about anyone would be able to find something. OH! This is a little airstream looking diner right in the heart of the city of St. Paul and I had driven by it time and time again and of course wanted to try it. I think I also saw it on one of those food or travel tv shows once. So,,,,one day I told my daughter we are going here to check it out...it was raining its ass off that day and we walked in and bam!!!! your in there with all eyes on you because well, it's an airstream! The locals were funny and enjoyable----the food left a lot to be desired so i would not go there for that...stick to something easy breezy ---coffee was alright---you can watch them make your food--and they use the liquid yellow grease by the ladle there....if that is your thing ---glad I checked it out---but no burning desire to go back. read more

This was my first stop from the airport as I was hungry and it was 1am. There's quite a number of people here even at that time. I ordered the cheeseburger ($5) and fries ($3). So it sounded cheap, but I was disappointed with what was served on my plate. The cheeseburger was literally a giant patty with a slice of cheese --so plain. And the fries were simply a handful at most. I felt short-handed but oh wells. Yes it is Mickey's and while I've eaten at the downtown st.paul location this one just didnt have the same feel. Maybe I've changed? Chocolate Malt was solid, fries were over cooked in a bad way. Burger was good and the service was fast. AVOID the BLT sandwich, bacon was like chewing leather and there was 1/3 cup mayo on my sandwich, smig of lettuce and one slice of tomato. It just didnt have the same greasy spoon nostalgia I remember from the downtown location. Plus the food isnt nearly as cheap as everyone's reviews claim. I love this Mickey's. The Downtown one is good for bringing tourists and going out late downtown with friends but this one is usually much quieter and still has a great diner atmosphere. The food is super greasy (duh) so beware if for some reason you didn't come here because of the greasy food. Mohammed is the best server/cook! Nicest man ever :) Give him a big tip! Going to Mickey's is, more or less, going for the nostalgia. I remember it as a local dive when I lived in the area. As well as a location for "The Mighty Ducks" (it was the restaurant Charlie's mother worked at.) That aside, it doesn't really hold any strong suit in terms of upkeep, flavor, or menu specials. Mickey's a is a basic, small diner. It is what it is. Going in, the wait staff was friendly enough. Mickey's is quite small and narrow. I don't believe could see more than fifty. Even trying to recall, that seems very high. Thus, the wait staff pretty much do everything. From cook to serve to clean to host. They did a fine job juggling. We didn't go at an extremely busy time. The food was nothing to rave about. Mickey's isn't really 'known' for anything though. Their food was fine, but it wasn't exactly miraculous either. Just like the diner itself, it was what it was. We received are food in a timely manner and ate it promptly. Our waitress was going to refill our coffees, but got busy with a few folks at the counter-top. The waiter that helped us previously was on a smoke break. (Which we found out because they just have a table, chair, and ashtray right in front of the parking lot they go to. We decided to call it and head on our way. Mickey's is definition of 'Meh'. It would probably not be my first choice for any reason, but since it's open 24hrs and I was starving... I would go back. The prices are fair. The food is edible, but nothing I couldn't do in 5-20 minutes in my own kitchen. I WOULD SUGGEST: They move their smoking spot in the back so my child doesn't see our waiter puffing away while we walk to our car. read more

This place is definitely not the prettiest of places out there, but it gets the job done. The food is mediocre, not bad in any way, just not great. The service is quick and you get the feeling of a real traditional diner/ truck stop diner. So basically it get's 3 stars for having reasonable food, in a reasonable atmosphere, for reasonable prices. Its a flash back into time and always reminds me of the Jingle all the way movie that took place in Minnesota way back when (though this isn't the exact location) The menu items are still all the same it seems like they do have new owners to this specific location that a few new menu items are added not on the actual menus but posted in large neon posters on the windows like chicken wings. Fun place to go once just to say you ate at mickeys and yes its a greasy spoon but its open 24/7 has the old classic diner feel and will always remain a classic in the neighborhood. Plus I like the little stools you can sit on watching your food being cooked in front of you. read more

The absolute worst diner I've ever been to. The service was decent but the food was not. The first indication of what was to come was the "apple juice" that tasted like apple flavored water. Then came the omelet and hash browns. My son put it best when he said "everything must be watered down here". The eggs and hashbrowns tasted like they were cooked in greasy water. The flies flying around didn't even want any of it. I wonder if it was just an off day or if there are only certain things that should be ordered. read more

I really liked this place at first. Fast service, old fashioned. I ordered Americas Favorite All Day Breakfast. All was delicious until I started eating the "New York strip". I honestly thought it was actually pork. It looked far less than appetizing. Tasted salty gristly and not fresh. I stopped eating it altogether because I didn't want to get sick. My mistake for not reading the Yelp reviews and looking at the photos prior to eating here....The customer service was fine. However, the value and food was horrible. The server asked if my lady wanted cheese on her veggie omelet. Of course, she said yes and was charged extra for it later, even though I thought omelets come with cheese as a standard. Plus mushrooms were canned and the omelet looked and tasted horrible (the eggs were fluffy). My earth special was mushy, plus it had a square piece of sandwich Swiss cheese melted on top. Who puts sandwich cheese over an egg scramble? Why wouldn't you use shredded American or Cheddar cheese? Plus the $4 side of bacon sucked! Go somewhere else or make it at home. read more

I am a St. Paul native as is my father and my son. My Granddaughter and I flew into MSP from our home in Las Vegas to visit my dad. We met my son there who drove in from North Dakota where he is working. Four generations of us drove to Mickey's for dinner. We all ordered different items and tasted each other's choices. What a wonderful and flavorful experience we had. All of our menu selections were great! The bean soup, loaded Omelet, potatoes O'Brien...everything was amazing. Our cook was our waiter and cashier. He had the place smoothly flowing all by himself. Super visit home with nice tastes and smells to good with family banter. read more

I actually prefer this one over the historic one downtown. It's not as tight at the counter, which gives you more space and comfort to socialize with the regulars. A good stop on the way to the airport. Their coffee has always been exceptional. Not the trendy, strong stuff, just plain old SYSCO, the local food purveyor brand. I love it. Favorite eggs, OE, in a pan, not on the grill where they end up looking like a bad case of acne. I never had an omelette, because I would get too full. But I love to watch them make it in the blender, then whip it around in the pan to make it super fluffy. I am more than satisfied with an order of golden, crispy hashbrowns. If I want that extra umph, I get potatoes o' brien. It's been a long time since I had lunch there. I got a burger and fried fish sandwich, I think you can substitute hash browns for fries. Bathrooms are handy and private. You can actually get a nice view of upper west 7th from this location.Plenty of parking. I don't get the address, it is more or less on west 7th, just above where montreal and randolph meet, next to the famous dave's. I don't understand how this place has any good reviews. The service wasn't just bad, but outright rude and aggressive. The owners must have an inside connection at the health department to keep from getting shut down, because it looks like no one ever cleans the place. And the quality of the food didn't make up for any of the other problems...it was just bad. Seriously, I don't know how anyone messes up a cheeseburger as badly as the one I had. This diner touts all of the history and nostalgia surrounding it, but it's clear that the owners and employees take no genuine pride in any of that. My 5-yr old son and I stopped in for dinner a week or so ago. We were the only people in at the time, and our cook, Mohamed, couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating to us. He made a perfect Mickey pancake for my son and served it within just a couple of minutes of us ordering. He answered all of my son's questions while he was cooking, got him extra whipped cream, made a second and then a third Mickey pancake for him, then sent us home with an extra cookie for dessert! I clearly underestimated the deliciousness of Mickey's on West 7th (not the downtown one - but the one near Famous Dave's). It was our first time here. Fantastic, speedy, inexpensive food. Recommend bellying up to the counter. Watching the cook is like watching an amazing orchestral conductor. Food was great and exactly what we hoped it would be. The place was perfectly clean (saw somebody's review saying otherwise and I simply can't see where that person was coming from - and I've written a number of Yelp reviews before.)
