I really liked this place at one point. But over the last 6 months the service has gone down hill, with the exception of 3 folks. (Had a barista even give myself and my sister in law attitude telling us we didn't know what we were ordering) I have had nothing but burnt shots in every latte and americano I have gotten. Middle Way has a reputation for delicious food for a good reason. I live for the avocado melt. Always amazing and relatively cheap.

I have to say that the food is pretty good but wow the service sucks like A! We came in on a Sunday was not packed like usual but it took forever to get our food and then when we left 30 min later they never brought our shakes that we paid for and had to drive all the way back just to get it. We asked to get the shakes remade because it was probably melting already and the manager said yes it was fine- when we got there they seemed to have changed their minds and said that the shake would be fine because "we just made it" when it's been 45 min ago(I didn't know that it takes 45 min just to make a shake) wasted my money and gas for a shake that tasted crappy including the service and ppl. Will not be coming here ever again- don't tell me one thing and do another... read more

The first time I went here, it was for lunch. I was at a "Meh" level, the quiche was OK, the service was slow and horrible. Dessert was divine. Maybe would've given it 3 stars. Loud, slow, okay food overall. The second time left me wondering if there was any way I could give this place negative stars. It wasn't any one person or any one thing. It was every single part of my experience that left me unsatisfied. The lassiez-faire waiters and staff are HORRENDOUS. They simply do NOT care about pleasing their customers at all, they only want to look trendy, and hipster-douchebag cool. Half the female staff were halfway naked on top, with cut-out stops hanging off of one shoulder. It was embarrassing. My friend insisted on bringing me back there, insisting that their breakfast was MUCH better. We were both shocked to find out that she was terribly wrong. Breakfast came with a rude cashier. My friend and I paid separately, and said it'd be fine if she put us on the same table-number. She insisted that the kitchen would "yell" at her, arms raised, if she put both on the same number, and refused. My breakfast came about 15 minutes later, about 5 minutes after our smoothies came. He then proceeded to pick up HER number, leaving mine. We asked if my friend's breakfast was on the way, he responded that was all there was on the ticket. After insisting, he said it was "all worked out" and her breakfast should arrive in 7 minutes. 10 minutes later, my friend went to the server to ask. He looked at her blankly, and finally recalled. He said "well, we're working on it, maybe 4 more minutes." Another 10 minutes went by and she went to ask again. They stil weren't done! It was ridiculous. I had picked at my food, waiting to eat TOGETHER, like we had intended, and by now my food was cold and gross. My friend insisted I try to eat before it "got TOO cold. "In fact, I quickly discovered that my omelete was underdone and runny inside, it ran all over my plate, ruining both the sad remainder of the omelete and the potatoes. The waiter came back by to deliver my friend a piece of carrot cake on the house. He had not asked if she liked carrot cake--she didn't! But it didn't matter. He asked how my food was, and I replied that it was pretty underdone and terrible. He asked what I meant, and I replied. "don't you SEE the runny egg here?" He said "oh... yes..." and WALKED AWAY. I picked around the omelete, where there were huge blobs of goat cheese which had by then partially melted, and spinach that had wilted from the long wait. When I finally got so sick of picking at it, and put my napkin on it (note that my friend's food STILL has not come!), the bus boy came by and asked if he could take it. I said it was the most horrible omelete I'd ever had and to let the kitchen know. He asked why. Again, I asked him if he could see the underdone bits. "Uhhh.... (he looks) yeah. Let me get this out of your way." No offer to replace. No offer to get a "free" dessert. Just Uhhh.... yeah... I will never go back. The systemic nonchalance of the entire staff is inexcusable. I wish I hadn't left a tip at all on my original bill, but they asked before I even got service. Wish I hadn't. I hope someone else reads to the end of this because it all really happened to me. read more

Went in for a to-go order. The wait was over an hour, the order came out incorrectly and the staff was rude. I somehow keep convincing myself to give it one more try to redeem itself but this was the last straw. Middle Way won't be getting our business anymore. read more

The reviews on yelp looked great for their breakfast, however their customer service on informing customers they ran out of food sucks. Sat at the table for more than 20 min to only inform me when they served my daughter & husband their food the food I ordered was no longer available & offer me an alternative meal. read more

Food so over priced!! It I guess okay taste, they don't offer any sort of kale salad at all I was super surprised, because if you are trying to be the super green and organic place you are known for then why not adding more to the menu. read more

I love their Planeta Azul salad with lemon tahini dressing! The salad is so colorful, fresh and delicious! I just with I took a photo of my meal before I devoured it! I also come here for their green juices and other color juices, smoothies, and soups. They have vegan, gluten free, vegetarian and meat lovers options! Vegans can have lunch with their carnivore friends. It's a win-win! I love almost everything about this place except the ordering process. I can't see their menus on the wall while I'm waiting in line, especially their daily specials. Those I only see when I get up to the register. At lunch time I have a tough time finding a place to sit, so I walk in debating whether I want to stand in the long line first or whether I want to find a table and leave my coat there to hold my spot. Leaps and bounds below average in almost every respect. I've been several times, and each time they forget a portion of the order, and when I go to request the missing items I get attitude and eye rolls from the cashiers and folks in the kitchen. The most recent time I threw the slightest curve ball and requested no onions, as I can't eat them without getting very sick. I had to repeat the order several times for it to finally be processed completely. My partner ordered a cold sandwich half and a soup, which I guess you can't do. The cashier suggested she get a hot sandwich, but get a whole because it would be more money than the half. What was dumber than her reasoning behind that contrived set of mental gymnastics was my decision to agree, as I was treating her(my partner, not that cashier). Upon receiving the order, I noticed several base elements of my sandwich missing, and one which I paid extra for. The same cashier not only looked like she just woke up, but also said she'd give me the sauce I paid extra for like it was her own idea. Yeah, thanks. Awesome. She brought the request back to the kitchen staff who looked at my receipt and back up at me like I handed them schematics for a time machine. After the kitchen staff mustered the will to adapt and overcome, I finally received the sauce and was on my way. My partner's sandwich, which was supposed to be hot, was in fact not. So I bypassed the dynamo of mental fortitude at the register and asked a member of the staff who was actually very nice and understanding about the whole thing to help me out, kinda. Finally some dude slammed her sandwich down on the table(which was sticky and dirty) and walked away. Upon completion of the meal, I found the odd 1 or 2 onions plastered to the top slice of bread left over. I picked those ones out, and accepted that in a few hours I'd start getting sick, as I ate the majority of the sandwich. I wouldn't be as frustrated with this place as I am if we were being unreasonable, but we just wanted what we paid for. Seeing grown adults get overwhelmed by simple tasks is always somewhat entertaining, so maybe if I have the panging need to feel good about myself I'll take a trip down to the Middle Way Cafe, order a sandwich that slightly deviates from the menu, and watch the whole place burn down. -Damien read more

I feel like the food here is hit or miss sometimes. I've gone here over a dozen times and it is a roll of the dice on whether I will like the food or not. Same goes for their baked goods which they always have a lot of fantastic gluten free options. The cupcakes have sometimes been really dry though. I really like Middle Way's new look. Prior to the make-over, I had only had coffee and sandwiches. Post make-over, I have tried the salads which have always been reliably fresh and unwilted (common here in Alaska). The peanut soup was marvelous! Spicy, meaty (nut meat, I mean), thick, and rich. It was served with blue tortilla chips, which didn't compliment the soup, but really, the soup didn't need any help. My favorite thing about the new Middle Way, is the speed at which the food arrives. I remember back in the old days that if I didn't phone in my order ahead of time, I would have to wait almost an entire lunch period waiting for a take-out order. read more

I almost always call ahead and get my order to go. Lunch time can be VERY crowded. My system works 9 out of 10 times. Sometimes they lose my order and one time I waited over 45 minutes before giving up. That said, this is a really great option for vegetarians and carnivores alike! Fresh food and unique offerings. I've been consistently disappointed with their muffins & cookies but the sandwiches are the best! It can get a little loud and I've seen plenty of people camping out with laptops, so during busy times it can be tough to get a table. read more

Yummy!!!!! Vegan Avocado Sandwich was DELICIOUS!!!! In town for a wedding from San Francisco and did not expect to find anything veggie/vegan friendly. If we lived here it would be one of our regular places. Super veggie, vegan, gluten free friendly but certainly not limited to that. Amazing case of baked goods. Pancakes and huevos rancheros were really Good for breakfast. We went there twice in two days.Food took a while to come out and most of the service really friendly. read more

I went there for a quick lunch and told the gentleman ringing me up that I only had 15 mins to eat. He recommended a delicious tortilla soup and had it out to me in less then 30 mins. Hard to find places with GF or Vegan offerings when traveling. The menu was extensive and the prima bowl was great! Picked up some to-go baked goods. Staff was friendly, helpful and didn't mind our questions on ingredients. A rare occurrence for people with multiple food allergies. I usually don't come here during their busy times as it can be more time to wait, then I have. However, I come here often during non-busy times. I love everything on their menu, but often get the same items just as I like them that much. I love the Vegan avocado melt. I would probably like their traditional one too, but I have never tried it. I really like this place for lunch. They're ALWAYS polite and fast, and here in Anchorage, thats a rarity. Have I mentioned how nice the food is? They are one of the few places in town that doesn't fear pissing off the population by adding spices to the food. The coffee is always good as well. they recently opened for brunch on the weekends so I'm looking forward to going. Seriously good huevos rancheros, and I think I could drink the kick start every morning (lemon, ginger, apple juice). Perfect sweet, tart, spicy balance. I was here on a weekday morning - bustling, but plenty of seats and good service. Lady at the register was a bit the typical hipster apathetic, but the guy who brought my food was very pleasant, friendly, and totally non-hipster welcoming. I'll be back here for breakfast on every subsequent trip to Anchorage. Word to the work traveller - sadly, they do not accept American Express. This places has some really awesome vegan options and their food is always really fresh. But it does usually take a long time to get your food. And it's really pricey for the portion size. I wish it didn't cost so much to substitute the chips that come with everything. Even getting a little cup of salsa with your meal is 75 cents. I am no vegan. In spite of that I think Middle Way Cafe kicks a##. For coffee you've got to try the Dream Blend - a full roast that's smooth as heck. If you need to kick it up a notch, I recommend the Cubano. All of the prepared food is fresh & tasty but don't expect your order in a hurry. It's take a good 10 - 15 mins to get your food.
