A clean and comfortable 24/7 dinner located in the UES. Their menu isn't as wide as other diners, but they have the essentials you need after a night out drinking and everything else is closed at 3am. I always order their Mexicana Omelette and it is the best omelette I've had in Manhattan. I've even had it delivered and they package it well and don't skimp on the condiments. Another favorite are their milkshakes. They're delicious and you can tell they use high quality ice cream and milk to make them. The service is quick and friendly and the interior is immaculate. A solid late night food diner on UES. Extensive menu. Any American food or drink you can think of - is on the menu! Used to be a stone throw from my house when I used to stay on the UES. Have had a few late night post drunk meals and late night cravings meals here. Food portions are big and taste reasonably good. Food I have tried here - chicken parm hero, turkey club sandwich, strawberry milkshake, fries and Nutella banana crepe. Have you seen the decor?! - so many beautiful lights - looks very festive and cute. They built a cute shed that protects guests from the cold and they have heaters that works really well. The food was great and the waiter Willy was very nice. However, my reason for giving a low rating is due to "manager" Miguel. There was a discrepancy with the bill and while my friend and I were trying to figure it out, Miguel became very aggressive with me (but not my friend, who is not a person of color like I am), demanding that the bill be paid. I told him that his tone was unnecessary since we were trying to figure out what the discrepancy was. He made me feel like a criminal, like I was really going to try to run out on a $30 bill, even as he watched me give Willy his tip. It was embarrassing and unnecessary. This place made a mistake with my order and the guy who works at the restaurant, Sam, gave me an attitude problem instead of apologizing for his mistake. I ordered food for pickup on delivery.com. As I walked up to the restaurant, I got a call from delivery.com on my cellphone to inform me that Sam at Midnight Express had canceled my order because the restaurant had stopped deliveries. I was like "What do you mean by delivery? I am entering the restaurant right now to pick up the food!" I went to Sam at the counter and told him I did not ask for a delivery - it was for a pickup. He must have read the fax wrong. He insisted that delivery.com were the ones who canceled my order (He did not know that delivery.com had called me telling me he was the one who called them to cancel it because his restaurant could not deliver). Furthermore, he basically did not care and said I am just one person and he doesn't need my business. What a great way to treat a customer. One star all the way! read more

"What can i get you to drink? OJ, water, soda, rum?" - This was the opening line for the waitress. It should be the brunch hour diner standard. Gold star for you, ma'am. It was 11am and the rum sure was tempting. This place seemed to have an awful lot of negative reviews and i just wasn't seeing it. It is a diner, albeit a bit more upscale than the norm, still a diner. I dragged 2 UESers here with me so we could brunch before i left NYC and they didn't seem to have any complaints about the food or service. The brunch specials start at 10am. I had the "billy bob" brunch special which included a choice of a select alcoholic beverage and additional side. I went with a mimosa and a fruit cup. This was my first mimosa, i don't understand why they are so popular, should've gone with the rum. The fruitcup seemed fresh and had a nice assortment of colored stuff. Breakfast is almost impossible to screw up so i'll just say the rest of the dish was great. They do have quite the assortment of addons for the omlettes - i tried a bit of a friend's which had ham / cheese / tomato / avocado since i was skeptical about the avocado, but it was good too. There seemed to be a few flies in this place, but that might just be a NYC thing. At least that's what i gathered from convos with my sex in the city type friends. Aside from that everything went smoothly. A lot of interesring sounding meals on the menu and it really seems like a decent diner for the area. If i'm ever staying in the UES again then i could see myself trying something new here. read more

Just realized the last time I reviewed Midnight Express was the only time I've gone in there sober, hah. So here I present to you a more accurate telling of my Midnight Express experience. My roommate and I end up here pretty much every time we go out in the neighborhood. If my roommate isn't enthusiastically declaring "I'm hungry, let's get food!" over and over after a night of drinking, then there's something wrong with her. I buy into it, because I mean who doesn't get the late night munchies really. And there, like a glimmering neon green light beacon of hope- is midnight express, right on our way home. I always get the same thing- the breakfast sandwich. So delicious. The people who work there are all so friendly and easy to talk to and don't mind entertaining a couple of drunk girls who are very impatient and demanding of food. Also the owners are Greek, and after one too many vodkas, I am convincingly fluent in Greek apparently? So that's always fun. Anyway this place is wonderful. They also have free late night delivery which comes in handy more than one might think. The moral of this review is: breakfast sandwiches at 4am are delicious. read more

We had a great meal here on Labor Day! They offered a brunch menu, which included one of the brunch entrees, a mimosa, Bloody Mary or screw driver, coffee and a side of fruit for $15.50. We had one of the eggs Benedict dishes and the French toast. The service was friendly and reasonably quick. Definitely the sort of place that you can depend on if you are craving for a late night meal on the Upper East Side. Came in here after my cousin got off work late and we had a good ol time chowing down on sandwiches, pancakes, and burgers. Also, one of my favorite is mixed berry pancake but I felt more than 1/4 of blue berry tasted weird. I wonder if they checked blue berry's condition before they serve? Good spot for a late night meal, they have a pretty standard diner menu in that they have a huge range of options, including all the classics that you would want at a diner. The service when I have gone is fine, nothing spectacular, and same with the food, but in all reality what else do you expect from a smallish diner! The prices are high compared to what Im used to in NJ/CT diners, but its not enough to make it unreasonable. The milkshakes are my favorite so definitely splurge on one of them! read more

"You've gotta get a gimmick if you wanna be a star." Midnight Express adhered to this advice, though the gimmick they chose was green. Yes, that's right. They recently renovated this place and now the plates are green, the lamps are green, the lights are green, even the bathroom doors. It's not a forest green or a regular old primary color green, but it's sort of neony... like green with a kick. You know what, I kind of like it. It is sort of the reason why I was attracted to this diner as opposed to the two/three others in close proximity to my apartment. People were enjoying the 12.95 brunch special, which comes with a bloody mary or mimosa and some fresh fruit, in addition to your entry. (It's nice to find a cheap, convenient diner that also serves alcohol). There are a nice selection of omelets to choose from. I got the Mexican (jalapenos, cheddar cheese, onions) and my friend got the California (avocado, mushrooms and cheese). The service was good and they kept the coffee coming. They also let me substitute fries for hash browns. Sounds simple, but you know, it made me happy. So yeah, it's a typical diner, but the front of it is made of glass and it's nice to sit there and watch life on the Upper East Side: little dogs prance by in their coats and daddies walk by with their kids on their shoulders. We enjoyed ourselves at this diner. It's exactly what you'd expect and want in a diner. Great service, comforting food, good value, and warmth from the cold. Believe it's also open 24/7! The menu was incredibly long and diversified across various cuisines. Some items that caught my eye (but I didn't try) were the patty melt, Philly cheesesteak and various burgers. Seems most main dishes came with coleslaw and pickles, which is what you'd expect. Onion rings were a good choice, but felt like they were from the freezer and not made fresh. Their dinner special was around $21 for an appetizer, a main, a soup/salad and a vegetable - really an amazing deal and potentially one you could even split! Worth checking out! read more

Total scam with their burgers. I ordered the fries burger. On the menu it says that it comes with fries on top, with onions, and chipotle sauce. $12.95. I was not so hungry so I opted out of making the burgers deluxe. I got some weird looks from the waiter, and he brought me a burger with only buns, burger patty, and a pickle. He said that the toppings listed for the fries burger only come if I make the burger deluxe, which meant an additional $3.95, and more food than I can eat. He said that I have to make the burger deluxe to get what I want, which was the toppings listed on the menu. Fine I did it. After he fixed the burger, he said, "see? Isn't this what you want?" I will never go back to this diner again. I felt scammed and ridiculed. If you won't provide the burger listed on your menu without making them deluxe, please save the customers the trouble and go ahead and add the price onto them. We will probably feel less stupid eating in your restaurant. read more

I've been ordering from midnight express for 8 years. They've always been excellent with their delivery and presentation. Now they got cheap. They want to save a few cents on the delivery baskets they put the food on. I ordered a chicken salad which came on a carton 1/2 open w the chicken falling out. Instead of the regular plastic sealed carton. Terrible. Shame on them. I will never order from them again and I'm reporting them to the Department of Health. My family members know them well. This is my neighborhood go-to diner. I've had many drunken late night/early morning breakfasts, dinners here. The staff is pretty friendly. They have good food for a diner. I usually go for a regular grilled chicken sandwich w/ fries unless I'm ordering fried eggs, with Turkey bacon and toast. I barely have burgers but if you're gonna do a burger here, you might as well try the "Patty Melt" which is a burger with grilled cheese patties instead of a traditional roll or bun. I highly recommend. The good thing about diners is that you can get food at a reasonable price. This diner is no different. Oh and of course they're open 24 hours and it's such a delight to join a bunch of drunken fools with your own drunken foolish friends at 3am which is actually a pretty busy time at Midnight on. I actually liked this place when I ate here once last year, but rudeness ruins an establishment. We just made an order for delivery and saw that there was no toast on the menu (as in white toast). So we added a note to our order asking if they could please add it on the side, and to make sure they got it, we called Midnight Express Diner. (We were willing to have them charge our card for it.) The man who picked up the phone said that it's on the menu and that if we don't specifically order it and pay for it, they won't deliver it. When we told him it wasn't on the menu (check for yourself... it's not there as of the writing of this review), he said "thanks" and hung up the phone. It's a small thing but it says a lot about the service and attitudes here. There are plenty of great diners in New York with fantastic food. Maybe consider taking your business somewhere that values their customers instead of disrespecting them over something so small. read more

If it's 3AM and you need French toast in your life, come here. If its 3AM and you need pancakes in your life, come here. If it's 3AM and god dammit you're hangry, come here! This place was crowded even in the middle of the night. Mixed crowd ranging from us (concert goers who had to deal with swampass in NJ) to people returning from the club in heels they cannot properly walk in. Their French toast is damn good and very filling. They give you individual syrups and butter, are quick to refill your coffee, and the food comes out relatively fast. If I lived on the UES I would probably be here more often than I'd like to admit. read more
