I've been with two groups and all members got different items and loved them all. Generous portions and never quite finished my plate but was also not overwhelmed (imo the perfect amount!) Nestled right off of West End Avenue, Midtown Café is somewhat of a local celebrity in the Southern cuisine market here in Nashville as they were recently named to OpenTable's "50 Best Southern Restaurants in the Nation" list and happen to be celebrating their 35th anniversary this year! We made reservations (highly recommended) and popped in on a Sunday morning around 9:30 AM for breakfast. The place was already busy, but by the time we got done eating the line was out the door...so again, I advise you to make reservations as this place does not seat a large amount of folks! Upon arrival, we were promptly greeted and sat in the front corner/nook seating room which featured (4) tables. Again, they do not have a lot of room, so they utilize what they have quite well. In addition to this area, they have dining room and bar area. Once sat out waiter came through to grab drink orders and get things moving. I was sad, and honestly shocked, that Midtown Café, an awarding winning SOUTHERN restaurant, does not serve sweet tea. When I ordered and was told "no", I thought the waiter was joking, it took him a moment to actually convince me he was not. However, my friend, who is from the north, was able to get the makings for a hot milk tea without issue...I mean, come on! Once I got over the shock, which I am still not fully over, of not having sweet tea, we tossed in our breakfast orders. We had to get a few classics given the spot, so we went with the Midtown Biscuits, which is your standard two egg style breakfast platter with a meat, eggs and side. I went with one of my favorites, biscuits and gravy which was two biscuits, gravy, eggs and a side. I will say the best part of the meal for us both was the smoked gouda grits, and on my end the gravy was excellent, there just wasn't enough of it. All the other items were good, but not excellent. The biscuits were slightly dry and the eggs were hard scrambled, but that last one was on us as we should have requested a lighter scramble. Now we know. Given their location, I was worried about parking, but they offer complimentary valet. When that may not be an option, there is a paid lot immediately behind the building as well. Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Midtown Café. We will have to make it back for a dinner service soon, but for this visit the breakfast hit the spot. read more

Truthfully I wasn't sure what to think about this place when someone was telling me we had reservations there. As we pulled up it was a small little house in between a few big building and the moment I wondered what I had gotten myself in too. I was pleasantly surprised minus a few minor things...it's not really kid friendly, smelt overwhelming like seafood and you feel a little snug in the space. Let's get to the good stuff...service is a 5 out of 5...the staff was warm and friendly and did a great job checking in on us. I'll say that even though it smelt like seafood and my mind went straight to it being a seafood restaurant, it really wasn't, lots of other great options. But I'm the type of person that once I smell something it's hard to convince me not to go that route so I got seafood! I did the anniversary special sea bass they were serving which was delicious! I through it was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I personally didn't care too much for the veggie side, felt like it was julienned and put on my plate. We as a table had other things that were really good. The crab cakes were a nice portion, well seared and flavorful. The Brussels sprouts (I didn't have because of a nut allergy) looked fabulous and were demolished even by non-Brussels lovers. read more

They appear to have a free shuttle from downtown if you make reservations as the parking is limited. Small unassuming place within walking distance of our hotel which was awesome since parking is limited in Nashville. We were seat upon arrival and the place was packed. Local cafe vibe not at all high end in the feel till you get to the menu and the options. Outstanding selection and variety on the menu. I had the shrimp pasta and lobster bisque as well as a crab cake which I missed getting a pix of. The shrimp pasta was good but I would have like more garlic but then I love garlic. The crab cakes were very good. The lobster bisque was delicious and smooth but no chunks of lobster in it. We also had a mussel appetizer that I also mixed a pix of that was delicious and it came with bread to sop up the juice with. Delicious but you guessed it I could have used more garlic. We went in for breakfast after an early doctor's appointment. While the food and service was good, other issues overshadowed these. First, parking is almost impossible. We paid $20 before we ever entered the door. We were seated quickly and handed menus. The food and drinks were brought out timely. Unfortunately, we were seated next to a 8up that was loud and boisterous. Other than a Mimosa, which was excellent, we ordered nothing special. The total for both of us with tip was over $100 if we include parking. Simply too much for a breakfast. I've been wanting to try Midtown Cafe for awhile now. Every time I think to go it's always too late. Finally made it in on a weeknight, parked right up front. There's normally valet but no one was outside. As soon as we stepped out? You could smell the food. From the outside it looked empty, we walked in and it was packed. There was a line, good thing I made reservations. Ended up sitting at the bar and our bartender Doug was amazing, he's been there 27 years. I decided to go for their special, which was sea bass and lobster risotto. The duck was tasty as well. Everything was cooked perfectly. I was recommended to try Midtown Cafe by my hotel's staff. I walked in and was greeted by the friendly hostess and quickly seated. The waitress was super friendly and made me feel right at home. This was the second person I spoke to in Nashville and I could already feel the southern hospitality. I ordered the coffee with their standard breakfast which included eggs, potatoes, sausage, and a biscuit. Everything was delicious and priced very affordably. Nondescript from the road, this plain-on-the- outside quaint-on- the-inside café sits across the street from the Courtyard hotel. Tables decorated with black cloths and black linen napkins, each with a small vase of fresh flowers and food and drink menus gave the restaurant an elegant vibe. On this, our first visit, we found the staff friendly and attentive. I ordered a cocktail from the extensive list of specialty drinks with ginger beer as its primary ingredient: refreshing. Next came a small bowl of warm homemade mini-biscuits with a ramekin of butter to accompany our outstanding lobster bisque. Though it was smooth with no bits of lobster in it, the hint of brandy and perhaps cinnamon added an extra touch of tastiness. Both of us then settled on the beef short rib entree. While the boneless meat was fork tender, the Coca Cola barbecue sauce was rather flat and left a metallic taste in my mouth. The accompanying risotto was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, however, the skinny shriveled asparagus that were half green-half yellowish added a bitterness to the dish. My spouse took one bite of the beef, ate half an asparagus and could eat no more. He said the entree reminded him of his childhood when his mother made pot roast with mashed potatoes and grassy vegetables for Sunday dinner. He said it wasn't worth the $29 price. Tacked onto the bill was a $1.92 "kitchen service fee." Guess it costs extra to cook the food there! read more

My and shrimp and grits entree was quite good, definitely best to eat with a spoon, but I expected the grits to be cheesier and perhaps creamier as well. This little cafe was in walking distance to our hotel so we went in to grab breakfast. I wasn't aware how quickly they fill up, or the fact that they take reservations so we were REALLY lucky to grab 2 seats at the small bar. Reservations would be highly encouraged. We went for an emergency breakfast after our hotel's kitchen lost power. We were really happy for the unexpected opportunity to dine in this delightful restaurant. It's very unassuming on the outside, but we parked right in front and got seated right away. The seating is a little cramped but comfortable. Black tablecloths was a classy start to the day. My son got the French toast with peach compote on it and country sausage. I think he will dream about this dish. It wowed him. My husband and I had had a bite at the hotel before the fiasco, so we ate lightly. I had the avocado toast, which was sublime. He had home fries and sausage gravy.
