I love going to restaurants like this every once in a while because there is something so quintessentially southern in the simplicity and lack of pretension involved when a chef serves up a $40 chicken piccata made with the same recipe that he used 30+ years ago when the restaurant was founded. A $17 Brussels sprouts appetizer would have been an insult to any chefs in the fine dining scene of a more sophisticated city; nothing in the preparation of the sprouts spoke to the quality of the ingredients or did anything inventive or subtle. But they were GOOD. Why? Because they were coated in butter and sugar and salt and fat. My scallops were cooked well and immediately slopped on a pile of lobster mac dripping with cream and melted cheese. There was something so innocent in the uni-dimensionality of flavor. As NYC culinary bigwigs strive to be the coolest and most cynical kids in the room with their orange wines and ironically whimsical dishes, Midtown Cafe clomps through in agrarian cowboy boots, undmbarrassed with its offering of a while chocolate martini and Coca Cola braised short rib. Fresh flowers on all tables! Walking distance from midtown hotels and Vanderbilt University. We were in Nashville for a long weekend that unfortunately ended with my partner in Vanderbilt Hospital for a few days. However, one still has to eat! And I ended up eating at Midtown 3 times in two days. I only have two pictures. My first order that I got to go. I had to go with one of my have to haves if on the menu. The grouper was delicious with amazing grits. The green beans were so good that I was torn between them and eating my fish. Lunch the next day was the trout w/ crawfish. I never clean my plate! It was a no brainer. I had to. And it was fun to overhear the music industry talk from the neighboring tables. Very quaint but lunch was still easy to get a reservation. The next night I walked back over for the meatloaf up at the bar. More green beans! Meatloaf was delicious even without the gravy with very creamy potatoes. Not only is the food excellent, but, even though I sheepishly showed up near-ish the end of the lunch open hours, I was happily welcomed in. Visiting from North Carolina (where many restaurants give a stinkeye to patrons arriving at any point within an hour of closing), this meant a lot to me (though, of course, being polite, I, of course, tried to hastily finish my lunch as efficiently as possible -- despite receiving nothing but relaxed unhurried cheery kindness from all the staff around me). It was really nice to have friendly and kind (though not overbearing) service from everyone. The food was, unsurprisingly, terrific -- the lobster mac & cheese is an understandable house favorite. My only regret is that I only stumbled upon this restaurant on my last day in town. Apparently, they even have breakfast/brunch gloriously available every day -- clearly this is a restaurant after my heart. It was easily the best restaurant I experienced in Nashville (with a bonus of atmospheric music industry behind-the-scenes guys having business lunches, adding some authentic Music City ambiance.) Next time I'm in town, I will be eating here for 3 meals a day. They'd better not change before I come back. read more

So...this famous lemon artichoke soup of theirs? Omgosh, what everyone has written before and more. It is akin to the Greek avgolemono, sub the rice with diced and shaved artichokes. It is amazing. And while I would have been content with a second bowl of lusciousness, I had already ordered the rainbow trout, sub broccoli for spinach and red potatoes. The fish was wonderful, the accompanying crawfish sauce I would pay money to ship home. The broccoli was also a perfect balance of softened and crisp. The potatoes were well prepared also--no leathery skin and nice and creamy. I would suggest pairing with the local Amber beer (brewery name starts with a "G"). I wasn't a huge fan of it on its own, but whatever it was I didn't care for went away once I sipped it with my meal. Perfect complement! read more

On our last morning in Nashville, we popped into Midtown for some much-needed grub after a night on Broadway. It was within walking distance of our hotel and since I had read about it in the NYT Nashville in 36 hours, I knew we needed to try it! There was a line and a wait, but the hostess (another Tricia!) quoted us 45 min, which we accepted. However, I don't think we waited more than 15 minutes! Yes! They also take reservations for breakfast, so next time, we will do that for sure! Chris, our server, was quick and efficient. They have a streamlined operation to serve good food quickly! Food: We both opted for the pig in blankets, mine with grits and his with home fries! The meat was soft and tender, full of flavor, and had a few charred goodness bits. The biscuits were soft and buttery! Smoked gouda grits are a thing, I tell ya! The coffee was hot and strong! Great spot! I went with a group of friends, and yes, reservations are recommended. We dined here before taking in a show at TPAC and took the shuttle. What a fabulous idea! Other members of my party had dined here before and there were MANY recommended dishes but I settled on the Grilled Salmon. It has been years since I visited Midtown Cafe, so it was time to stop in again! I came in for lunch on a Monday. And it was poppin'! I remember it being a little more for the business crowd in years past, but it is now very relaxed and open to all. It's very easy to valet outside (free) as parking in that part of town is no bueno. We were seated quickly and given a basket of hot fresh mini muffins. So good! We then got a large order of their yummy Brussels sprouts. I was in love with the addition of diced green apples! Next I had a bowl of their signature artichoke lemon soup. Sublime! There's a reason they have been serving it for decades. True story. And the salmon with a side order of julienned vegetables .... perfect. I was glad to see that a locally owned OG eatery is still thriving in Nashville as I have watched too many disappear. read more

We happened upon this place for breakfast and couldn't be happier. Even though we had to wait for 30 minutes it was worth it Well run for a very small restaurant. Fish portion was a little thin, specially when compared to another portion of the same dish that was served at our table. That is the only reason this is 4 stars not 5. Went here because it was walking distance from our hotel, expecting a simple diner. Surprised when we arrived at 9 am on a Saturday and the place was packed and we were asked if we had a reservation! Black tablecloths and cloth napkins told us we should expect great food. And we were not disappointed! After about a 45 minute wait, we had great service and yummy southern food at reasonable prices. We had a recommendation from a reliable source to eat here for an early dinner. We looked at Yelp reviews, most of which were 4 and 5 stars. We called to make last-minute reservations, and were immediately accommodated. This restaurant is a small obscure building surrounded by high-rises and multi-level parking garages. It doesn't look like much but once inside, it reminded me of a charming English pub. Dark and cozy, complete with an equally beguiling bar. Tables were laid beautifully with dark linens, but were too close to each other, making a tête-a-tête nearly impossible. Our server was attentive and pleasant. I ordered the "Coca-Cola BBQ Beef Short Ribs, served with mushroom risotto, grilled asparagus and Coca-Cola BBQ." Based on the menu description, I expected a delicious bone-in succulent rib with Coca-Cola BBQ sauce on the side. But, that's not what I got. A beef short rib should be bone-in surrounded by succulent fall-off-the-bone meat. This one did not have a bone-in and was instead a mediocre Sunday pot roast with no BBQ dipping sauce on the side. The mushroom risotto was soft and mushy instead of al dente as it should be, and the asparagus spears were over cooked. When rating a restaurant, atmosphere and table service are key (this restaurant had awesome, eye-appealing charm and an attentive server). However, the most heavily weighted rating is for the food. While this entree was edible, it was not fabulous as it should have been for this classy restaurant; It was just "average" and so that's why I had to give it only 3-stars. Based upon the reviews, I think their breakfasts are probably worthy of 4 and 5 stars, so I'll return for breakfast sometime and expect to be wowed. read more

They have ommelettes, benedicts, biscuit plates, egg plates - all the good things. The very sweet waitperson was energetic and helpful. She asked if I wanted a couple of little biscuits that had just come out of the oven and of course I did! They were delicious! I ended up getting an egg white omelette with bacon, goat cheese and avocado. IT was PERFECT! They put the avocado on the outside and didn't cook it which was the exactly right thing to do, because there truly is nothing worse than a cooked avocado. It came with cheesy grits, which was also exactly what I wanted. The food here is delicious and has enough variety to serve every palette. They have my favorite Cholula hot sauce, too!
