She provided excellent service with a smile, gave fantastic recommendations, and even offered us a drink to go. She was training a new staff person and her patience was evident. This is an unassuming little place with a great menu. Their Gouda grits are thick and cheesy, but for me their biscuits were the standout. I tried their midtown biscuits and they were 10/10. My husband, who LOVES chicken and biscuits got their Nashville Hot chicken biscuits, with a side of gravy to smother on top. He kept raving about how good it was. After dinner later that day (at an excellent restaurant) he said the best bite of the day was the chicken biscuit. Heck, that might be his favorite of the trip! Our server was very friendly and provided lots of suggestions. I got an unsweetened iced tea to start and tried a mini biscuit on the table. Eric R. ordered the shrimp and grits with fried egg after seeing it both on the brunch and lunch menus and was told it is the top seller. I got the mediterranean pasta and added blackened shrimp. While the presentation looked decent at first glance, the avocado didn't seem very fresh you could tell by the darker color. I made a reservation for brunch before I had to head to work because I saw they had gluten free options. I ordered the huevos tostada and it was amazing! It was such a large portion I couldn't finish it all the way but the flavor was amazing and I loved the green sauce that came with it. I've always been a little "meh" on Midtown Cafe, but a recent experience there was great, so an updated review is warranted! Sometimes the "old classics" get overlooked, so this is one time I'm willing to admit I was wrong. I was pleased that breakfast was available till 2pm, and the fried chicken biscuits were insanely good--crispy yet crispy chicken, luscious buttery biscuits. I'm still thinking about them several days later. My lunch buddy also loved her meal, the fish special of the day. Service was terrific: I was greeted warmly, my ice tea stayed filled up throughout the visit, and checks were processed quickly. It's a well-oiled machine. read more

Brunchin' in Music City!! We were visiting Nashville and my son and daughter in law suggested Midtown Cafe for brunch. Two great things were that they were able to make a reservation the day of which was great, and it was in walking distance of their apartment. We were seated immediately which was great. One con is that the place is small, but they have added mirrors to make it look bigger which really helped. The food was really good. I enjoyed the Midtown Breakfast that came with bacon, scrambled eggs and a fruit cup. The fruit cup had my favorites strawberries, madarin oranges and grapes rather than the typical cantaloupe and honeydew. Midtown Cafe was such a treat! We decided to eat here for date night before a show at TPAC. Having free valet & a shuttle to TPAC was so handy (pre reserved)! The food was incredible & the service was equally as good! We were impressed by how happy the staff seems to be working there & how much they all work as a team! Never once did we have to wait for a refill for a drink & as soon as we finished a plate there was somewhere there to take it. The food is high quality and matches the price point. My chicken was very tender and the flavor was just delicious! For dessert, we tried the Jack Daniels Chocolate Chip Pecan Pie. It was served with ice cream which made it even better. The service at this restaurant was excellent. This place was the perfect spot for a date night. There were a few groups of maybe 4-5 people, but it was not too loud. Overall, great dining experience. I love going to restaurants like this every once in a while because there is something so quintessentially southern in the simplicity and lack of pretension involved when a chef serves up a $40 chicken piccata made with the same recipe that he used 30+ years ago when the restaurant was founded. A $17 Brussels sprouts appetizer would have been an insult to any chefs in the fine dining scene of a more sophisticated city; nothing in the preparation of the sprouts spoke to the quality of the ingredients or did anything inventive or subtle. But they were GOOD. Why? Because they were coated in butter and sugar and salt and fat. My scallops were cooked well and immediately slopped on a pile of lobster mac dripping with cream and melted cheese. There was something so innocent in the uni-dimensionality of flavor. As NYC culinary bigwigs strive to be the coolest and most cynical kids in the room with their orange wines and ironically whimsical dishes, Midtown Cafe clomps through in agrarian cowboy boots, undmbarrassed with its offering of a while chocolate martini and Coca Cola braised short rib.
