We drove by Mike & Tony's in Dormont last night and I thought it said Jose & Tony's which was a fabulous, authentic Mexican place that closed years ago so I was intrigued to see this is a Gyro place. Even more surprised to find out there is more than one location. Today we stopped at this location in the North hills about 2pm. Place was empty, we had the friendliest service from Ashley who checked on us frequently and topped off our drinks and also chatted with us about our impromptu Pittsburgh food tour. Anyways, our gyros were ready in moments and were scrumptious. The sauce is a sour-cream base with seasonings and delish. The fries were out of this world and, I hesitate to say this, but I think better than Thrasher's in Rehoboth and that's the highest bar I have. I've driven past Mike & Tony's a hundred times and finally decided to stop in. Since then I've ordered both dine in and takeout. I always get the same thing because you just can't go wrong with a gyro and fries. Service is very fast and the food is delicious. They give A LOT of meat which is great - a lot of similar places give much less. The restaurant has plenty of tables - I've never had a wait. Seems like a fun place to catch a game as well. Out of the two times that I have eaten at this location, the only word that I can use to describe the food is average. The service was great, the flavor of the gyros was good, the prices were fair, and the portions were large, however, the gyro sauce tasted like unadulterated sour cream. The filling of the grape leaves was pasty. I would have preferred a meat-filled option and for them to be warm, but that is personal preference. We also tried the M&T pierogis, which we all agreed would have been better without the buffalo sauce. But again, that is personal preference. read more

Ordered the Steak Gyro and it was good. The steak wasn't shaved as I expected, but instead a patty almost like a burger, which was odd. It was cooked well and pretty tender though. The provolone cheese was melted on top nicely and kept the tomatoes and onions within the pita. The gyro sauce was delicious, I do wish it was a bit thicker though, rather than watery, so it held onto its flavor and didnt make the pita soggy the longer it sat. On the side the gyro comes with seasoned fries that come in a little basket. They're tasty and freshly cooked. I know this place is sit down, but you get your food quick! The gyros are spot on with flavor and very filling. The fries are extra crispy and come in their own little fryer basket. The hummus platter is great as a meal with the hummus, bread, and olives. Options available for those that may not want greek inspired flavor. This was first time at the Mike & Tony's on Babcock. I've been to the former restaurant that was here many times. I stopped by late Saturday after a work event. I've always found M&T's gyros to be solid. This experience was the same. The space is big, not too many folks I the dining room, as it was later when I arrived. The bar area however was filled. I was quickly greeted and waited on. I had a local beer and a regular gyro. The fries here are very good, and that comes from someone that isn't a fry fan necessarily. They are thin and cooked perfectly. The gyro was, as always, solid and a great price. I have zero complaints. Will definitely come again. read more

Stopped in for some lunch with a buddy. 1st time visitor. Seated immediately and drinks came fast. I got the Greek salad and my friend a gyro. Food came out VERY quick...like less than 5 minutes. My salad was very generously portioned with everything, including the lamb. Quite delicious with the Greek dressing. Took half of it home, it was so big. My buddy enjoyed his gyro, and he's Greek and a chef, so not the easiest to please. All good here, and the food is very reasonably priced, especially given the portion sizes! Well done! read more

Not realizing that Mike & Tony's Gyros is part of a small chain, I was very impressed. I have passed their newest branch multiple times. They took over the building where Kretzler's Tavern was. It is very clean looking and very inviting. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable about Mike & Tony's. I had their Gyro and my wife had the Reuben, both were very good. I was going to try their Helen Mak, but it was late in the evening and I believe it would have been too heavy for a late night meal. I will be back to try it. I'm glad I went and I'm looking forward to going back. It's always nice to find a good place to eat and meet. I recommend going there and seeing it for yourself. read more

Enjoying the new location. Cool staff and nice space. Ordered the bacon cheeseburger with gyro meat on it! Got it on pita bread instead of brioche and subbed fries for onion rings (they have a pita version without the bacon as well without needing to make the request). Really enjoyed the blend of flavors. In terms of feedback, I think feta goes better with beef more than gyro meat goes with American, so I'd have feta as my base cheese for the menu item. I'd also consider tzatziki over Mayo for more of a gyro flare. As is on the menu, it feels like a burger with some gyro meat. Feta and tzatziki would be an even more epic hybrid IMO. I previously had read bad reviews, and was skeptical. Although, they did discourage my patronage for over a year, giving this location time to work through their issues. For my visit, I ordered the traditional Gyro with the french fry basket, and unfortunately the Gyro had no flavor and the pita was disappointing. I don't understand what could be wrong, as these are their staple ingredients across all locations. Service was great and the ambience is cool, with the dark black theme. Unfortunately coming in with lower expectations, my overall opinion as established by others was not improved. First, the temperature was comfortable indoors on a 29-degree day. (My abridged review of Dormont location - BRRR). Lots of parking. It is located on the former Kretzler's site. Overhead many customers sharing their Kretzler memories. Part 2: Introducing Mom to Mediterranean food. Since Mom enjoyed the hummus platter in Dormont, we ordered it again. We ordered the stuffed grape leaves as something new. I personally prefer them warm but they were good cold. In the future, I suspect she will suggest ordering just appetizers for dinner. Appetizers are large, so plan accordingly. In a Kretzler mood, I ordered the beer batter fish sandwich. It was a long but not very thick piece of fish served with cocktail sauce. Good, but not great. Mom had the veggie wrap. She was pleasantly surprised with the quantity of feta. She was initially going to order the grilled chicken salad but thought with all the appetizers ... And then ... there were the fries served with our meals. Seriously, 1 side of fries is enough for 2 people. Hot crispy fries served in wire baskets. Not a fry remained on our plates. Fantastic gyros! It is definitely a hole-in-wall place....but that's a good thing! You will leave there smelling like a gyro (again, not necessarily bad unless you have a big meeting with your boss). the downside is cash only. Sure they have an ATM. But, the fees add up. My husband and I decided to try M&T's today for lunch. There was a "please wait to be seated" sign upon entry and we did not wait long to be seated. It was a bit loud with music playing in the background which made it hard to hear the waitress as well as converse with my husband. My husband ordered the classic gyro with a side of fries. I did not take any photos but I do wish I had. The food at Mike and Tony's was exactly as I imagined a delicious gyro would taste. I got a lamb gyro with everything on it and a side of fries with honey mustard. Loved it! It tasted just as good as going to a food truck and made me miss summer. However, the service was not so great. Yes, our waitress got us what we asked for and needed. That's appreciated. From the moment I walked in though, I was greeted by a very young girl who looked MISERABLE and was not friendly. I wasn't sure if my gals had arrived so I asked if I could look and she had major attitude and then walked away. Afterwards, when she finally returned I asked for a table confirming my gals hadn't arrived and she walked me to the table threw down the silverware and stormed off. Our waitress was all very blah and I thought she could have made efforts to slap on a real smile. The girl who sat me, was in the bathroom quite often and then anytime she came out, again looked miserable. I completely understand bad days but I feel those two younger girls made the customer service experience terrible. Chicken plate came with no sauces or dressings of any type. Lettuce with no sauce. Very dry chicken, with no sauce. Ordinary pita with no sauce, hummus, or anything to make it good! We also ordered a gyro. It had lots of meat, but no flavor. Well below average. And finally we ordered a Greek chicken wrap. The wife could not finish it...she just didn't care for the flavor. It was below average. Fries and onion rings were good, but they could not save this bad experience. We will look elsewhere next time. I wasn't a fan. I had a burger and loaded fries and the person I was with had the chicken salad and spinach pie. The burger was okay. Nothing too fancy or anything. The fries sucked though. They use small, end of the bag style fries that you can't really get a good taste with. The cheese on the fries had a sour taste. The chicken has some kind of lemon sauce on it that wasn't good. We love Mike & Tony's and were so excited when they opened one nearby. We went on their opening night and they were busy but we had a great experience. Only had to wait a little bit for a table (worth it) and then got a ton of food for a reasonable price. We love the pierogies appetizer. Also their platters are HUGE. I suggest instead getting the actually gyro if you like those since they are still a good size and a little cheaper. Very big disappointment. I ordered take out. I got a Gyro and onion rings. The gyro looks about half the size we used to get on the South Side. The onion rings were a greasy mess. So disappointed. The food and service here is usually good. Have dined at the establishment frequently. Today I didn't have time to go out to a sit down lunch. So I decided to order the salad I usually get and go pick it up. I called the restaurant to order and asked for the Pittsburgh salad with the fries on the side so they wouldn't get soggy in transit back to my house. They said it was against policy to put the fries on the side. However, they said I could hold the fries completely and then Order a side of fries which could be put on the side. So in a nutshell I'd be paying for a salad that comes with fries and also paying for a side of fries. Such bad business. I had high hopes for this place when I heard it was opening. Very disappointed after visiting and eating there. The menu is the same as you can get anywhere else in a bar type restaurant. First I'll start with the pros.. Great customer service, good atmosphere compared to the old kretzlers, and they also have great beer specials. I was hyped up about Mike and Tony's coming to north hills. Now the cons.. The food is not something I'd go back to get. I ordered two gyros to go and it came out with 3 minutes after it ordered it which I was surprised about how fast my order was given to me to go. I walked out and immediately opened the foil and the first thing was noticed was the gyros are tiny and almost half the size compared to the south side location. There was a very small amount of gyro meat as well. As I started eating my gyro, each bite had dryed up hard crusty old gyro meat in it which I have never experienced before anywhere... there was more cut up tomatoes on my gyro then there was dryed up, hard gyro meat. I hope they end up fixing the quality of their food because they are known for the gyros. I will not be going there again until I hear better things unfortunately. I use to stop by their Liberty Avenue location when I worked downtown and have missed their Gyros since retiring. Happy that they now have a North Hills location. Not sure how we got so lucky.
