Coming from California and having access to many great bagelries, I was excited to meet the archrival on the east coast...NEW YORK BAGELS! I came here on recommendation by a local friend. This place was great, I shall not lie! I had a cinnamon raisin bagel, toasted, with walnut raisin cream cheese. Oh man...they do NOT skimp you on the cream cheese. In fact, they overindulge your every cream-cheese-craving whim. I LOVE IT! The cream cheese was divine. The bagel was pretty good. Not the best I've had, but really good. When I used to live in Washington Heights, I would come here twice or three times a week. It was my pregame ritual for exams (aka. my-brain-needs-a-bagel-to-function-correctly-and-pass-my-exam kind of excuse). Now, I get it once in a while if I'm in the area and it's still good. I'm don't know why, but their bagels are delicious. They look like normal bagels but it just tastes different from others I've had. Maybe it's the way they toast it or their spreads. Whatever it is, it works. My favorite is an everything bagel and walnut raisin cream cheese. It's a nice combination of savory and sweet. They do put a lot of cream cheese (which I LOVE) and you can definitely split a bagel with a friend. If you don't like bagels, they do have muffins, croissants, and sandwiches. I've had a few of their sandwiches. They are normal deli sandwiches that you can get anywhere. Nice option in the afternoon when you don't want a bagel. The mornings are busy, but they're quick and inexpensive. It probably takes 10 minutes max to get a bagel. For a bagel with cream cheese, it's about $3.25. It's easier to bring cash, but they do accept credit cards with a $5 minimum. read more

This is one of my favorite bagel spots. The bagels have more of a range some days they are just good and some days they are incredible. I'm a big fan of their lox spread. It has a discernible lox taste. They move pretty quickly on here too even when the line is long. You might want to get your cream cheese on the side because they have a tendency to go overboard with it but then most places do. read more

We were recommended to come here for a great bagel. Being my first time in NYC a bagel was def on the to try list. We got and everything bagel w/ jalapeno cream cheese, an egg bagel w/ plain cream cheese, and a strawberry danish. It was awesome!! The bagels were crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Very flavorful bagels and the cream cheese had a nice smooth feel, creamy, and rich flavor. The bits of jalapeno was great! It had a nice kick to it and played well with the cream cheese and everything bagel. The strawberry danish was flaky, the filling of strawberry and cheese was a classic pairing that was executed well. Mike's is right around the corner from my ladies sisters home, so if im ever in NYC again I will def be coming back for more great bagels!! read more

I'm a sucker for pumpernickle, and Mike's does it right! Add on the lox spread and a decent coffee, and I'm sold. Hopefully I stay in the area long enough to become a regular. Make sure you know what you want when you get to the counter; the line moves quickly. Next time, I'll ask them to go a little lighter on the spread, but for those who really like it thick, this is your joint. I'm pretty sure the owner of this hole in the wall was hanging out with a buddy in the corner while his employees were slinging toasteds behind the counter. At least I assumed he was the owner, because what other well tanned older white gentleman would be wearing a Mike's Bagels polo shirt? I'm convinced that he was an extra on the Soprano's. During my many visits here I ordered Nova Scotia, which is bagel and lox and thoroughly enjoyed it every time. One of my favorite places to get bagel and lox. They do not skimp on lox like many other places. I've also had a very good egg bagel with scallion cream cheese one time but Nova Scotia was one of a kind. No place to sit down. Coffee is subpar but I wouldn't give anything below 5 stars because I don't go here for coffee. There is a Starbucks right next door. read more

Very fast service, full disclosure: I only buy a bag of bagels and some cream cheese to take home but they seem to be very efficient when it comes to toasting/making bagel sandwiches as well. Their scallion cream cheese is DELICIOUS, if you're worried about your breath, that's what breath mints are for! Don't miss out! So far I've tried the egg, everything, onion, plain, poppy seed and sesame seed bagels and everything has been pretty good. I have always gone in the morning, I think 8 AM at the latest so everything has been very fresh, I can't tell you what it's like later in the day. They do close at 5PM which I think is a good indicator that they don't make an excessive amount just to end up with a lot of product sitting around. I've found that if you keep the bagels wrapped tightly in a paper bag that they're good the next day as long as you toast them. I don't think that this is necessarily a destination spot unless you don't have a decent neighborhood bagel shop but if you live around Mike's you should definitely check it out sometime. read more

Bagels are good here. Cream cheese options are less than other places on the city. My biggest complaint with this place is the staff and the way they handle orders. Before you finish your order they turn and leave to start making it. Then another employee comes by and you tell them the rest of your order and they tell you to wait for the original person to finish your order. It's always packed during the morning rush and at lunch, which is why they've never added seating -- literally just a counter and a fridge to the side with juices and sodas. Typically, two delightfully hectic, unmarked lines form (order on the right, pay on the left), and the guys behind the counter have mastered the art of one-glove work (to allow for speed in prep and payment). The bagels are large and hearty, and I want one right now. Can't go wrong with the Whole Wheat Everything (or any of the other choices). Strong cream cheese choices -- personal favorites being the jalapeno and scallion schmears. The sandwiches are all excellent and a great value -- most are $6.45-6.95. The Bronx Bully, Chipotle Chicken & Gouda, and Fire & Ice are absolutely phe-nom nom-able.
