No matter what you order, the food is always great whether it's seafood, steak, combo meals, etc. The desserts are also delicious and the live band is a fun atmosphere at the bar area. Been to Wells on holidays for years now, and, Mike's is part of the must do's while here: always good, VERY generous portions, great quality/price. The take-out side is just as good. I like that they make a difference between deep fried and light fares, which are more "baked" when it comes to seafood, for those watching the calories. read more

Not sure about the food. We didn't stay. We went in to eat & watch our team play football. Sure we are in New England but we didn't expect EVERY TV tuned to the Patriots game. Made it back to Mike's a few weeks back on a warmer than average Saturday night. Very busy, the words "gold mine" come to mind. But still able to get a few seats at the bar. This was a bit of a quick stop so we just had a few beers & some quick food. Lobster rolls very very good. One of my buddies got the buffalo wings & stated they were real good. Highly disappointed at Mike's Clam Shack... First and last time. Service was friendly but not helpful. When we asked Which is their most popular dish.. The answer was " everything " Ordered lobster pie but ...it was watery, tasteless, and the seafood stffing crust was less than appealing or tasty. Took one bite and could not take a 2nd bite. I expected value or taste For over $20 dollars. Got neither... Switched it out for a steamed lobster. One of the reviews states they got hot rolls... We didn't. The only thing I would get there is the steamed lobster.. And cole slaw. But be forewarned... Lobsters had a softer shell and were not meaty...instead they are filled with water. The food was meh, and is overpriced. Judging by the lines of people waiting for tables, you would think that they were giving gold coins out with the food. Always love coming here in the summer! The menu is a wide variety of local seafood and has something for everyone even if you don't want seafood. The clam chowder is amazing and full of fresh clams in a tasty chowder base. Giant servings of seafood are served and are hot and fresh! Great service and homey, family atmosphere. Started experience with an incredibly rude hostess, then went downhill while waiting 20 mins to get drinks. Lots of staff hanging around looking really bored. Took over 90 mins to get food. First time waitress was nice was when we were leaving. Needless to say, if you like rude, slow service...this is your place. Food was okay, but atmosphere overshadowed that. Stopped in for a quick lunch and was impressed. They have a sports bar side and a quieter side and we sat on the sports bar side. Fantastic haddock chowder and Haddock Reuben. Very fresh tasting. Much nicer atmosphere than some of the Lobster Shacks in the area. read more

Mike's was not super impressive. I thought that with "Clam Shack" in the name, the fried clams would be good, but I was wrong. And the "loaded" mashed potatoes are a dish of mashed potatoes with some cheese and bacon pieces on top, which weren't amazing. Maybe with some chopped chives and a little sour cream on the side they would have been better but my whole meal was a disappointment. My wife's fish and chips were better than my clams and that made the experience worth three stars instead of two. I'm sure there's something on the menu that I would have liked but I'm not sure how many times I'd go back and look for it. Best clam chowder in town. Honestly. Lobster rolls are just average. Claymation is excellent and the batter is perfect and cooked perfect. Lobster Pie is actually better than a more famous local place in our opinion. Only complaint might be service because the waitress seems to want to serve us in HER idea of order instead of ours. If you like the atmosphere you can eat in the bar area or choose the main dining area. This place does not know how to season or cook food. We tried once before my wife was pregnant and asked for a well done burger. It was rare I mean like deep red rare. Went on Sunday, 11/4. I wish I could place separate reviews for the food and server from the hostess station. Why, why, why are cell phones allowed when customers are present? I approached the hostess station, while the hostesses were both on their cell phones, to get change to leave a cash tip. Of course, I interrupted their Facebooking or whatever, during work hours. They slowly looked up from their screens with those annoyed grins that come from someone who doesn't want to be bothered, and didn't speak. No "May I help you," nothing. No putting the cell phones out of sight, no courtesy, nothing. One of the hostesses was not a young kid, she should know better. I was incredibly disappointed, there is a time and place for everything, and cell phones are not for work time, especially when YOU'RE THERE TO PROVIDE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Let's just say I hope I annoyed you as much as you did me. So now to the reason I left 3 stars and not 1. We arrived with a party of 8 and Desi was our server. She was a well oiled machine, quick with our drinks, even though we didn't order alcohol, delivered our salads all together, and brought out all 8 meals at the same time. She was prompt, courteous, and efficient. She was attentive without being bothersome, I'm so happy we had her! The food was good, not excellent, my steak was a bit overcooked but still tasty. You could tell the salads had been sitting in the fridge for a bit too long, but they were OK. The tarter sauce is a bit thin and had something unpleasant about it that I can't put my finger on. The portion sizes were large, even for the kid's size, and we did take home leftovers. That being said, we all ate to capacity and enjoyed ourselves. A little pricey, but what can you say, it's a tourist town. In the end, I wouldn't return by my own choice, but would probably go back if that was where everyone was going. Mikes was great when it was located south on route 1 where the new clam shanty is now located. Now in its "new" location " it is busy, dirty and just plain filthy!!!! I am sorry but don't know how they passed the health inspection. We own a cottage finally in Wells and avoid this place since the inception of the property. Too big for their britches. This was my second visit to Mike's. Not being in the mood for a big meal I ordered the clam chowder lobster roll combination. If you want a really big lobster roll this is not what you should order. For me it was perfect. The chowder is some of the best I've had and the lobster roll, though on the small side, was delicious. It is very Weathervane-esque here. Doesn't feel like an authentic Maine sseafood shack. Very crowded. At least an hour from the time we arrived until we got our food. I got the combo plate with fried haddock and fried scallops. It looked great when it came out. Fish was cooked perfectly. However, it was so greasy that all the batter came off the fish and scallops (which were beneath the fish) and piled on my plate in a soggy, greasy, unappetizing mess. Pretty sure it was just thrown on the plate directly from the fryer. I didn't like the tarter sauce. It was more like a dill sauce. My brother got the shack potatoes. They were tasteless. Supposed to have onions, peppers, cheese and sour cream in them. Didn't see or taste any of those things. I definitely would have rather eaten in OOB where I already was. I can think of at least 5 places that are a hundred times better. read more

My wife and I began visiting Mike's about 10 years ago when it looked more like a shack and focused on making quality food. Over the years, the restaurant has expanded in size considerably however, the quality of the food has plummeted especially over the past few years. The restaurant is generally clean and most sections look fairly new (because they are). We visited the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon (in March) and even at 1:30 pm there was a 20 minute wait (off-season!). We started with fried onion rings, were were rather bland. My haddock and chips were decent, but my wife's lobster was a different story. The claws were quite tender but the tail was tough. The coleslaw which came with the meals and used to be delicious, was not fit for human consumption. Joining us were our twin toddlers. For our daughter we ordered mac-n-cheese (typically her favorite) but she didn't eat much because it was better suited for construction material than food. Our son didn't touch his chicken, which was a bit...well, it's hard to say...perhaps "rubbery" is the most apt description. On the plus side, at least for the kids were the prodigious french fries which came with the meals which actually weren't bad, but clearly came from a freezer. Desserts for the kids were limited (non-existent?) and they shared two scoops of vanilla ice cream from the "adult" menu. On the plus side they did get crayons and a two-side piece of paper with drawings/mazes suitable for coloring. The wait staff were friendly if not a bit inattentive. When fending off twin toddlers from creating a disaster scene one needs quite a few napkins at times. Half way through our kids' attempts at using their ice cream for war paint we asked our waitress for some "more" napkins...she brought two! In the end I had to get up myself and procure a reasonable amount of napkins so our table didn't look like a HAZ-MAT scene. I suspect that as Mike's reputation grew so did it's valuation. They have focused on expanding the size of the restaurant, but have lost their way with the food. We initially felt that the decrease in food quality reflected "growing pains" as the business expanded...we were unfortunately mistaken. Moreover, the prices have increased dramatically, I suspect to help off-set the pricey renovations. In the end we'll have to find a new "favorite" seafood place when we visit Wells. read more

So the stuffed mushrooms were okay, the stuffing was a little soggy tho. The haddock was the only good thing. . Hubbys clams were luke warm andf fries & rice cold, . The restaurant was not busy why oh why cant restaurants time food or bring out orders separately so food is hot. For goodness sake, how hard is it? Then found out dessert was free and waitress did not even say anything. .Expected more from seafood restaurant that is on the pricier side. Disappointed. read more
