I had my 1972 Datsun 240Z towed to Mike's Z shop because I had issue with the carburetors that was the only issue with the car Mark got the car to start and but the issue was once I started the car up I heard a ticking noise coming from the engine that wasn't not the case when I took my car there I ask Mark and he said I have a bent value plus my oil spray bar was broke now WOW . Mark quoted me a ridiculous price to fix everything I just had the car towed back to my home. Also once I got the car home it wouldn't start at ALL, That was a waste of $200.00 for nothing I found out what the ticking was coming from once I remove the value cover and lash pad on top of the spring was off that comes from over revving the motor to high. I make an appointment 1 month out, and Marc tells me how busy they are. I call them on the day of my appointment to give them a heads up that I'll be dropping by with my car, to which Marc replies with them being too busy to work on the car right now, and reschedules me to a date within the next month. I call again and no one answered. They called back within the next couple hours and I couldn't answer. I call back again and they tell me I took too long and they gave my appointment/spot away to the next guy on the list. The level of unprofessionalism just makes me laugh. Mike's Z Shop is the only place you should have your Z-car repaired! Mark is a genius, he cares about his work and making a customer feel good spending their time and money. It's been years since I owned a 300zx (my dream car), and once this time came where I'm able to have the car again, I knew I needed to once again find a specialist in this car, not just some random mechanic. With that said, Mark, for all intents and purposes, is a flat out genius technician, especially when it comes to anything in the Z family. The attention to detail he gave to my car is of the highest standards and he knows these cars like the back of his hands. Just as an example, when I bought the car, it came with an undiagnosed vacuum leak that the previous owners couldn't figure out how to fix. Mark comes into the picture, and with one glance, sees that the vacuum lines are all hooked up to something, just not where they should be. Once Mark was done with my car, she was purring like a well oiled machine for sure. Anyways, can't say enough good things about Mark! I ve been wanting a s30 for a long time and I finally had a strict budget for the car and the build. I went to Mike's Z Shop to ask questions to see if my project was realistic. After visiting the shop and talking to Mark, he let me know what I could do for my money. He was really patient and knowledgeable about all things Z as well as the 510 and Roadsters. Once I located my 260z I got it towed all the way to his shop and with in 4 business days he had my car running. He called me when he said he would and really helped me out since I was on a budget. He swapped my Down Draft Weber carbs for the SU Carbs and got me Air filters the same day. The guys at the shop all were super friendly and genuinely love the cars. They discovered other issue with the engine like rocker arms and rotting lines and they pretty much hooked me up with fixing those issues and charged me labor. The shop is amazing. They have everything from L series engines to SR20 swaps ready to go. They have tons of transmission, dashes, hoods, almost everything you need they got, or can find for you. They have a Datsun lot full of client cars or cars that will dismantle. Its worth it to go and check out the shop. I just had the guys at Mike's Z do a bunch of work for me on my beloved ZX. Had the entire motor torn down and rebuilt, the Auto swapped for a 5-Speed, headers, exhaust, lowering springs, matching shocks and struts and a new hood. I talked to Mark for over an hour about what I wanted done, how much I could spend and he took all of my input and recommended a few things I didnt even think about. When I got the car back, there were a few minor issues I wasnt happy with and Mark fixed those pronto! Mark, Matt and Rod truly care about the customer and will bend over backward to make sure you have taken care of. I cant think of a better way of doing business! tl;dr Heres the deal: You've got a Datsun/Nissan/Infiniti and you need it fixed. You take it somewhere else and they screw with you. Sorry it's taken so long for me to post this review, but it has also been hard for me to step away from my 350z that Mike's Z Shop installed a new engine. I'd like to continue by thanking Mark and the rest of the team at the shop, my 350z runs like a beauty, just like it did back in 2003 when I first purchased the Z. Mark even replaced my clutch and followed up with me the following week to see how it was running and asked how I felt with the work that was performed, I've never had a mechanic shop follow up with me. Had a fuel leak that I can smell inside the cabin. He replaced all of the fuel lines inside the engine bay except the one thats leaking. So I called, had to leave a message because it was his day off but he called back right away, told me to bring it back in the following day. Had to drive 30 miles round trip but at least he fixed it right away. Really nice guy but that leak was very common so I don't understand how he can forget to replace that fuel line. read more

I just want to state that although I am not a mechanic nor I know it all, I do know enough about cars to get by. There are some things I can do for myself but I am not against taking it to the pros when I am stuck. I've been to many different specialty shops and they are mostly all the same. Although they are very knowledgeable about their trade, they act like everyone else is an idiot and it doesn't matter if you are a customer, they don't mind making you feel dumb on purpose. Well this has been MY experience so far. The guys at Mike's Z shop are none of the things I just mentioned. They have amazing customer service and are obviously experts. When I called Mark, I was pretty sure that I needed to replace a head gasket or change the entire engine to my 2008 Infiniti G35. Prior to talking Mark, I took my car to another independent mechanic and the Cerritos Infiniti Dealership. Both places had told me the overheating of my car was caused by the head gasket and a replacement would cost up to 5K. After doing a little research, I found that the value of my car was around 5-6.5K according to Kelly Blue Book. I was in the middle of making a decision to either buy a new car or replacing a head gasket, knowing it wouldn't make sense to pay more than 3K because the value of my car and the car is already 137000 miles in. Mark was one of the last place I called because his place specializes in Nissan & Infiniti engines. During my conversation with Mark, I can tell right away that he was knowledgeable, honest, compassionate, and down to earth. He asked me a few times if I really needed a new head gasket because based on his experiences, he didn't think it would be the case. He told me to let him take a look and without hesitation, I towed my car to his shop. About an hour after looking at my car, Mark called and told me he found air pockets in the system that caused the overheating and charged me just one hour of service. He also drove my car around longer just to be sure it is safe. If I can, I will tell everyone I know to come to Mike's Z Shop. He is the expert in this business and won't cheat you for your money. Even the Infiniti Dealership is not a place to trust because they will cheat you whenever they can or they don't even know how to diagnose a problem when it's their engine to be begin with. Mark the owner, on the other hand, is very knowledgeable and has been in business for 40 years. He is also very personable, kind, and easy to talk to. This place has totally earned my trust and I will be sure to bring my car here from now on. This is my new favorite car mechanic. read more

Year 1996, got ripped off from these guys when I was a young and gullible . A bearded mechanic smoking a cig inspected my car, a 1989 Nissan Sentra with barely 40K miles. My wife's Sentra was leaking from the oil pan, and the biker looking mechanic said it needed a whole new tranny. I recounted him , and I stated that the oil pan gasket just need a new gasket. Then he fired back, "If you open the oil pan , the entire transmission would drop out and fall off." I scratched my head and agreed to pay a new NEW TRANSMISSION, and left the car for repair. $ 400. Two hours later, he calls back on the phone stating the car was ready with a new transmission. I thought, "Wow, that was fast." Boy, was I DUMB AND WAY TOO TRUSTING. Never went back. A thief he was. Never go to Mikes. That dirty mechanic might have been old Mike himself, not certain. I don't feel so bad today. The way he smoked cigarettes, he has probably met his maker already. At the time, years ago, my wife and I were a young struggling new family with a child and baby. $400 dollars was a lot of money for us. But I forgive him, I done well with a lot of hard work. read more

These guys are great. I took in my project car and these guys totally gave me the confidence that they knew the car in and out. I've been there a number of times because I'm still not done with my car. I'm not kidding you when I say that I literally have heard 2 other sets of customers say they should've come here first because their previous mechanic messed up. Deal with Mark, he's the owner of the shop. He'll take care of you, but be warned, they're busy. Also, the shop is in Whittier so it may be out of the way. Okay, this is probably going to get me kicked off of Yelp, but I need to respond to Brian B.'s review of Mike's Z Shop. I can't speak to his specific issues because I don't know him or his car, but Mark treated me very well and did a beautiful job on my 1971 240Z. He knows these cars better than anyone, and I have no idea what happened here, but Mark doesn't strike me as the type who would leave a customer unsatisfied. He works his ass off, he's as honest as the day is long, and his expertise is unsurpassed. He's got A LOT of people who WORSHIP him, as well they should. Brian's situation involved a machine shop, so maybe that's the problem, but I find it offensive that anyone would impugn Mark's professionalism or his integrity. So, aside from breaking any rules about cross-talk, I have another issue here. This is more about my ego than anything else so I really should keep it to myself, but I owe it to Mark to bring it up. The filter is a problem. All reviews should stand on their own merit. I too wrote a review of Mike's Z Shop, but it didn't get published and doesn't factor into Mark's overall rating on Yelp. (It's buried in the filtered reviews at the bottom.) I wrote that review from the heart and wanted to let everyone know how much he helped me and that they're in good hands with Mark. I eventually arrived at the conclusion that as a first-time reviewer, I didn't have enough credibility to be considered "reliable." I noticed that most filtered reviews are from people such as myself, who have never posted before. So what happened here? Is this the filter's way of balancing everything out - because Mike's Z Shop finally got less than a five-star review? After all, no one can be that good, right? Wrong. Actually, I don't care whether anyone sees my review or not, although I hope my rebuttal shows up. Brian's unfortunate experience notwithstanding, Mark does excellent work; he wouldn't have been in business all these years and have such a loyal following if he weren't a master at what he does. But it hurts me to see his overall rating go down to four stars because of one person's bad experience and the capricious and arbitrary nature of the filter. After five years of frustration (and about $2k) with my 82 280zx turbo, it is finally working. Since getting the car in 2008, it sat covered in my drive way due to an electrical gremlin. I have been to two other "z-shops" for three separate attempts to fix the car. Before finding Mike's Z, I was ready to push my car off a cliff. Mark used his decades of experience and lots of patience to carefully diagnose the problem and then take the time to test out his fix. When I arrived to pick-up my car, Mark personally washed the back window, threw on a new wiper arm and shared some cool info on Datsun's. I was desperate for my car to work and he could have taken advantage of this and charged me big bucks. Instead, he was beyond reasonable and even gave me a Mike's Z t-shirt. I will wear it with pride. Mark and his staff are honest, patient and just plain cool. I want to keep this gem to myself, but I have to share this review. As a 25-year long Z owner, but a more recent transplant to soCal, finding Mike's Z Shop was like finding an oasis in desert. There's just not that many people that really "know" how to work on my '76. Even though I'm not all that bad of a mechanic, I've now been to Mike's Z Shop three times for various repairs. These guys know their stuff. Projects that would have taken me an entire afternoon, of the mechanics at Mike's can complete in an hour! One cool thing worth noting is that the "vibe" at Mike's is super friendly. It's not uncommon to find car owners (including myself) back in the garage just hanging out. Talk about experts! I've waited a couple months to post this review specifically to evaluate the work and performance. When I brought my restored Silver 1970 240z in to Mark (the owner, and great guy),I had just gotten the motor built by a guy in Rancho Cucamonga. The car ran for a few month only and after asking for and being denied any warranty, I needed to find another help. Me and a couple good friends tried to diagnose the problem but could not figure it out. Both my friends are very competent mechanics (one a former Toyota mechanic) and have built import cars starting back in the 80's. I then tried to take the car to a Z shop in Glendale and agreed to bring the car in on a Saturday to meet the mechanic. I had the car towed there and the guy no-showed me. When I finally found Mike' Z Shop, I knew it was the place for me. Mark figured out the issue within 10 minutes! Their work and service is spot on. They replaced my head, hooked me up with a performance cam and sent me on my way. I still need to bring it back but haven't gotten enough miles on it so they can re-torque the head. In any case, I highly recommend this shop to anyone needing help with their Datsun. Mark and crew are the best and I will only bring my car here, period! read more

I brought my 1973 240z here with a seized engine (long story). Mark had an l28 that was in good shape laying around, and he replaced it with the seized l24 along with some other maintenance things for the price that the engine itself would have cost me at other places I was looking at. I wish I lived closer, but if anything big ever happens to my car again, I will gladly drive the 3 hours south to take it to the right place for the job. Mark's been there since the old days, and I know that I can trust him to do it the right way. Right now I may be just a poor college student, but if I ever save up some money and decide it's time to make my 4 speed a 5 speed, I know where I'm going. read more

I took my 72 240z because i had worn out the bottom half of the block. Mark got started right away and swapped out bottom with a rebuilt 260 block. He was keen on getting me on the road again while being resourceful and generous at the same time. i couldn't be happier with the new engine and how helpful everyone at the Z-shop has been. Mark is the only guy I'd trust to work on my J30. These guys are honest and knowledgable. Went in for a timing belt, charged me about half of what dealer was quoting. A few days later I notice a small oil leak. Took it back, and he had to dissasemble everything to replace a faulty gasket that was installed with the timing belt. No charge for the correction. I had been driving a '78 280z with a short somewhere that I was unaware of. It decided to not start for me one day after a doctors apointment. I called Mike's Z shop and they we're more than happy to take it in. They are a very busy shop [for obviously good reasons] and so I was told it would be a while til they could take a look at it. It really didn't take long at all for them to find the problem and fix it, not to mention at a very reasonable price. Not only did they fix the problem with my short, replace what was needed, but they also fixed my fuel gauge which was a huge bonus. Its really not that hard to think about the z shop is thee best mechanic I have ever been to reliable trust worthy in general great guys I had to take my 92 Nissan 300z in because it was having a rough idle and it would sputter non stop at about 2500 rpm so I took it in and sure enough problem is gone even got rid of the annoying rough idle the guys at the z shop are all hard working guys take their time and make sure the problem is fixed plus they aren't like normal mechanics when they act like their your friend and they care but they really don't all they care about is money not at the z shop they help you no rip offs no excuses straight forward and awesome I'm planning on taking my car back for sure if theres any issues in the future even though I'm sure there won't be to sum it up GO TO MIKES Z SHOP!!!!!!!! read more

And they have tons of connections too. Let me just start by saying that Mark -the owner- not only knows his stuff but he is honest. Our family has three vehicles and he services them all. He never tries to up sell us on things we don't need and makes sure the cars run well. He has directed us to other establishments that do the things he doesn't and they are of the same caliber, honest and experts in their fields.
