I grew up eating and loving fish & chips. H. Salt Esquire opened at Ala Moana Center was my first taste of it and I was hooked. I've tried so many different places since and I've only found a couple of places that satisfies my craving. Over the last month, I've seen others recognize Mililani Restaurant. I finally got to try it today and I was blown away! The fish pieces covered the entire plate. The fish was crispy, steaming hot and moist. Their tartar sauce had a slight kick which I like. The chips (fries) looked like they had a slight coating on it which made it very crispy and soft inside. One of two best fries on this island. We also tried their chicken katsu. It wasn't a normal panko crust. I could taste that they take an extra step by marinating the chicken and the coating turns into a light batter before frying. Marinating the chicken makes it come out juicer and flavorful. Portions are very generous and plenty enough for another meal. I'll be back again and again. read more

When you make catering orders expect to not get your food at the time you expect it even if you pay for all the food 1 day in advance. They will make the excuse that they had a shift change and also switching out a their fryer at the same time which is why the food is taking long. Lame excuse ever. read more

Was a little disappointed. My usual order from here is fried noodles and it's usually a lot. The last time I tried it the portion was small. So this time I said okay give it one more try and again the portion is not the same as it usued to be and the price went up like $3. So you pay $3 more and you get less. I think I've been here too many times. It's a easy place in central oahu to pick up for parties or events. When you get there it's a local spot to pick up your plate lunch you are craving. I have ordered online with a small fee or via phone. If you don't feel like talking to anyone online ordering is super easy and convenient. My usuals are the fried noodles (always a fave when I bring it to parties) and the chicken katsu. The chicken katsu is different than other places as the batter is not tempura like other restaurants. This is one of those shaking my head reviews that I cannot believe I have not written, because I've been haunting Mililani Restaurant for over 20 years!!! Since the covid-19 virus we've been taking out more and our last stop here a few weeks ago was as it always is - consistently filling and good food and a superb value for the price. What's more is that their employees were truly grateful we were patronizing them in these crazy uncertain times. After taking out from Gyu-Kaku Mililani today (total disappointment), I looked up Mililani Restaurant to see what I had possibly said in my rating, but it looks like I've been mum all these years, maybe it was to hide this gem of a place so no one else could find it, but some hundreds of Yelp reviews later, it's no longer a secret and I'm so behind in the times. Aside from their half-pans of fried saimin (they make their own noodles, fresh) that we order for parties and potlucks, here are the things we normally order: TOFU EGGPLANT $10.49 - pretty tasty stir fry of nice sized chunks of eggplant and fried tofu, which is a nice touch, since fried tofu costs more than regular firm that will crumble and disintegrate when you cook with it. Over the years the gravy and flavor has changed but overall consistently good with two scoops of white rice and a side of macaroni salad. The food is a lot, so much that depending on my appetite, will last me two or three days worth. I cannot eat the whole thing in one sitting. MOCHIKO CHICKEN $10.49 - can't say much about this since I don't eat chicken, but husband always asks for this when we do a take out. FRIED SAIMIN $8.99 - fresh made noodles by Mililani Restaurant, easily the best choice in a take out when you want to share a dish. The noodles are lightly greasy, but flavored perfectly, not salty at all and with a generous heap of toppings like shredded fried egg, ham and green onions. It's a LOT of food for the price. I ordered the fish and chips and asked the order taker to wrap the fish in aluminum foil to keep the fish and fry separate since I had to drive to town and didn't want the fries and to get soggy from the steam of the fish. I feel really sad to give such a low rating to such a long time loved community restaurant. I've been going to Mililani Restaurant for longer than I can remember. Two stars because of the quantity given, otherwise the food wasn't anything special and worse was the service. Mililani Restaurant has never had particularly friendly service. The workers always seem irritated. I went in during the pandemic. It was prior to the government saying that everyone must be wearing masks however it was after we received recommendations to wear masks. Customers were all wearing masks but some of the workers were not. The worst part of my visit was when one of the workers (which appeared to be a boss maybe?) was standing over all of the prepared orders and YELLING out names. Now, if you have read or watched any information about how the virus is spreading airborne, this is just purely GROSS to be screaming literally in front/over of all the orders. A mask would have helped or perhaps him standing away from the food... something... anything... There are plenty of other choices out there that are local. Especially during this time, I really am trying to support local, but businesses have to realize too that we have choices and service their customers the right way. This was our first time here, so it took us a while to decide on something since there were so many options! I decided on the tofu eggplant and fried saimin. My husband tried the fish and chips. The place isn't fancy or anything, there are little booths to sit in and it kind of reminded me of an L&L or a regular plate lunch place. But when we got our order OMG, the portions were huge! We could have shared 1 plate, that's how big the servings were. My son and I liked the fried saimin. I have never had it like that so it was a nice change up. The egg plant and tofu were also delicious, we couldn't stop eating. It was a good thing it came out super hot so we could pace ourselves while eating lol. I tried the fish & chips too and I'm generally not a big fan of the dish but their fish was super good (I think it was cod?) The pieces were giant and their fries were decent--I especially liked the tartar sauce with both the fries and fish. They also serve everything with a scoop of Mac salad, not my favorite side dish but we couldn't waste it. Leo didn't care for it, but I managed to get rid of the evidence lol. Worst mochiko chicken ever. Chicken was barely battered with mochiko flour. Then it was covered in some kind of gravy. I ordered for a get together in mililani for convenience and didn't open pan till was time to eat. Thought they messed up my order cause it didn't look like mochiko chicken. Called them up and they said send a picture. Sent a picture and manager said that's what their mochiko chicken looks like. I said "with gravy?" . He said it's their mochiko chicken sauce and said "it's better that way". You can cook chicken however you like but you can't cook it totally differently than 99% of other places and call it the same thing. That's like ordering french fries from somewhere and they decided to grill the potatoes and serve with mustard when everyone else fries them and serves with ketchup. If you're looking for an awesome plate lunch that taste delicious and gives plenty, this is the to go in mililani. They have such a wide menu selection, but my top favorites are the Portuguese fried rice, garlic chicken, Korean chicken, and of course their famous fried noodles. The portions are enormous, usually my girlfriend and I will get a garlic chicken plate with all fried noodles and still have left overs. The prices a reasonably cheap for the amount of food you get and their reward program is awesome. So far I have gotten a free reusable cup, which if you bring it in all you have to pay is the price for a refill and I also got a $10 gift card. This place can get pretty busy, so I'll usually call in a phone order, but if you have to wait they are pretty fast. If you are in mililani and starving looking for a good place to eat, you need to come to mililani restaurant. The prices won't break the bank and you can easy feed 2 people with one plate lunch!! There's lots of parking available but the area can get busy in Fridays and the weekend evening as everyone tends to go out for dinner in the area. The menu is extensive. Lots of local plate lunch choices are available. I always enjoy the popular Portuguese sausage fried rice and the mixed katsu plate lunch. Large portions and great flavor. You can even ask for fried saimin to go with your plate lunches instead of rice. Also try the bento which is a mix of teri beef, fish, chicken katsu and spam. The catering menu is also quite extensive. It's easy and convenient to order for family parties or get togethers. Service is fast, but I always like to call in my order and quickly pick up. Unfortunately, the worst chicken katsu (if that's even the right thing to call it) I've ever tasted. The chicken was barely cooked at best and the breading had the weirdest consistency - felt like it was going to crack my teeth. I'm not even completely sure it was chicken. This was the first time me and my wife ever went to Mililani restaurant. I live on the west side and don't really like driving around the island, you know bad drivers and traffic. But decided to watch my granddaughter play softball yesterday in mililani. I decided to go Mililani restaurant to try out your food, my wife had the waygu hamderger and fries. Her burger was cooked med rare which she don't like, she likes her meats cooked well-done which was not your fault but my fault for not telling how to cook her burger, I take blame for it, also she said ger hamberger didn't have flavor but she likes your French fries that was good. Just one advice about your burger it could use some seasoning. Just my opinion. My fish tempura plate was good, I loved it and would go back on the weekends just to get a plate, or even try your fish and chips plate too. I've lived in Mililani my whole life, so you can only imagine how many times I've been here. Tonight I ordered the Korean chicken with fried noodles and the Portuguese sausage fried rice with your choice of eggs. I usually like over easy but because they give so much fried rice, we decided to get scrambled so that we could eat the leftovers tomorrow. The Korean chicken was a little too salty for my boyfriend & I. But the noodles were yummy as always. Every time we come here we must get the fried rice or fried noodles. It's simple but so ono! I was looking online for places to eat near me and Mililani restaurant popped up, so I decided to place in an online order. Time quoted was 15 minutes for the food, which is normal and pretty standard for any restaurant so I didn't mind. My husband and I arrived there a few minutes before our food was supposed to be finished, so I thought I'd let the cashier know that I was checking in for my online order....and here's where the bad experience starts: After telling the cashier my name, she looks at the area for to-go orders and doesn't see my food anywhere. She then looks at where the receipts print out for online orders and notices that my receipt is there! My food wasn't even made!!!! All she said was "OH MY GOD!!" Looks at her coworker, looks back at me and says "...your food will be right out". She then puts my ticket behind 4 other orders waiting to be made, says bye to her coworkers, clocks out, then leaves! No apology at all!!! I was honestly was in disbelief! What kind of person does that?? I had to wait an extra 15 minutes for my food that should have been done sooner!!!! As someone that works in a restaurant myself, I understand that things happen. Sometimes a ticket isn't noticed and food takes longer than expected. But if you're not gonna show any empathy to someone whose been waiting longer than they should have, or if you're not gonna try to accommodate them in any way, then what's the point in working in customer service?? They need some lessons in how to communicate with their customers!! Another thing I noticed while waiting longer for my food: FACEMASKS. They were not being worn appropriately. All masks were not covering their nose and mouth. Only ONE EMPLOYEE was wearing his mask correctly. I wish he was the one helping me with my order because he seemed more customer service oriented than everyone else working. Now I see why this place gets low ratings!!
