First off I ordered soft serve they gave me a shake, no big deal mistakes happen. However, later I realized I over paid and they didn't tell me. I got the chocolate birthday cake, tasted like salted caramel (which I thoroughly hate). I was really excited about this place from just moving here. We love all things Milk Bar and have been to multiple locations and have the cookbook to make our own at home. We got a slice of malted cake and a slice of birthday this time as you can't get cake slices at any of the other locations and we wanted to see how our homemade versions stood up. The birthday cake was on par with the one we made but the malted cake was fantastic compared to the one we made at home. We have renewed hope for trying it again at home! Prices are high but if you appreciate the product it makes sense. FYI there is very little seating though so expect to eat standing up or take it to go. Please add more seating! After seeing Tom Wilson celebrating his new contract at Milk Bar on Russian Machine Never Breaks and watching the Christina Tosi episode of A Chef's Table, I was so excited to try Milk Bar. The Logan Circle location is right next to my Crossfit gym and it's very tempting as we do our 400 meter runs. I built up the Cereal Milkshake in my head and craved it for days before I went in. Sadly, it did not live up to the hype. The location is chic, very bright and clean. The shake wasn't good. The ice cream actually takes like very cold milk; I guess I expected more of a vanilla soft serve with corn flakes. It was a waste of calories. I couldn't finish it and I am not one to turn away desert. I sampled a piece of the birthday truffle and that was good. I've heard great things about the cake and crack pie. Maybe I'll have to give Milk Bar another try. read more

Sadly, the hype was not well deserved. If anything, this second visit/second chance was not deserved (we previously visited the CityCenter location as well while we were there). Went here for a birthday dessert and to try their famous "cereal-milk" ice cream. Overall, was a bit underwhelmed given the hype of it. The location was good and had a good amount of seating. The service seemed a little chaotic with the loud club-volume music and not very friendly. We were told by the locals we were with that that was the norm in DC, however we had nothing but good service everywhere else we went for the weekend. What an overpriced, underwhelming place. First of all they can't do vanilla milkshakes but yet you can get any other flavor. That makes no sense when the base is a vanilla flavor. You can only get a small size or a pint of their ice cream. Turns out the contain is a half cup inside a full cup so when you get it you think you are getting a full cup of ice cream only to find a smaller one put inside so that the spoon only goes down half way and hits the bottom! We couldn't figure it out until we got home. So you think you are getting a regular cup but it is actually half. Why the smoke and mirrors?! It was $17 dollars and the minimum tip amount added is 15%. I've never had the cake and heard it is good but if you are going for a cold treat on a 95 degree day-just keep walking and head to Whole Foods where you can get a couple pints of anything better tasting for the same price. read more

This review is for the Birthday Cake class which was over priced and relatively useless. You do not get to bake cake or make icing. You are given pre-baked cakes, pre-made icing, pre-made crumbles, and no recipes. In a 2 hour $95 class you get to slap on some icing with virtually no technique required, stack cake and roll some dough in white chocolate (also pre made) and crumbles. A 5 minute YouTube video would have been equally informative. The class is attended by mostly 20 something women who absolutely loved the pink banana to tie up their hair (bow up). Underwhelmed for the price. There aren't many options. The one thing I liked, the maple cookie, was just a sample. You couldn't actually order it. I've never in my life been offered a sample of something that I couldn't purchase. But what really was weird was.. you know how you come into a place, there's no other customers there and it's CLEAR the staff would like to keep it that way? Yeah... no one seemed like they wanted to work. It was not welcoming at all. Staff tried to say my sons were gonna take the dollar store decorative pumpkins. They were just being toddlers... stacking and counting things that were at eye-level. It's not like they even picked them up & walked around. The whole trip was not worth it. I've been meaning to try the cake class for a while now. Me and some friends schedules finally lined up and we went! For $95 some odd dollars I was thinking was a little steep, but by the time we were done and leaving with SO much food, I can tell you that it IS worth the price after all. I came hope with a large cake, deceivingly large since it's so tall! Plus extra pieces that we cut off the main cake, which were a dessert in themselves, PLUS a dozen cake truffles! I must recommend- and so happy we decided- not to have two people from the same household go together. If my husband and I had gone together as we were planning, we would've had way way too much food in the house and it would've gone to waste. So again I do recommend going with friends or family that do not live in the same household so you don't end up with so many cakes that you just can't eat it all before they go bad. Also, please know that you Don't actually mix the cake and bake them, by the time you get there the sheet cakes are already baked that way you're not just staring at a stove for 30 minutes. It's very cool to see how they construct their signature cake and then I got to learn how to do it and I learned some special types and tricks along the way! This place probably has one of the most instagrammed ice-cream in DC. Too bad the ice-cream does not taste as good as it looks. Based on the employee's recommendation I got the cereal milk ice-cream swirl. The best way I could describe the flavor is awful. I literally had two bites and threw it away. My friends though had a much better experience. They got the party cake flavor and they said it was delicious. Also, the gluten free dough balls are pretty good. I don't understand the bad reviews - this place is so incredible. The simplicity of what they serve coupled with the nostalgia that you get from their recipes is what makes them special. The only one I actually enjoyed was the ice cream, but even that I felt like a cavity was forming as I ate it. I picked up a cake yesterday 11/16/19 around 6:15pm for a friend. Came in and the guy taking orders at the register was so unbelievable nasty and rude. He had such a nasty attitude and told me they didn't have a cake for the name I gave him and completely dismissed me. I called my friend To confirm I was at the right place. Then went back in and thankfully another guy asked me and found the cake right away. I don't know why people that work in a customer service environment go out of their way to be nasty to customers. All I did was go in and give him the name of the cake I was picking up. There were no other exchanges and absolutely no reason for his attitude and rudeness. And to top it off they got the cake wrong!!! We ordered a chocolate cake and when we cut into it at the party it was all vanilla!!! DO NOT recommend this place at all. I don't think I've ever given an establishment one star but Milk Bar will be the first. What's the point of having a beautiful building if you're going to have crappy customer service? Their employees are rude and unwelcoming. Let's add unsanitary as well because the woman who prepared my ice cream put the pretzel on top with her bare hands. I've noticed several ice cream spots in the city where the employees are older young adults who just don't want to be there.
