Went the other day and one of the night workers was very rude to my boyfriends mother. It was her first time there and she was having trouble figuring out what she wanted to order. The worker was impatient and rude when she was asking about the different types of toppings they had. When she was handing him the money to pay, he snatched it out of her hands and made rude gestures. This isn't very good customer service and clearly if you hate your job, you should quit. I don't know this guy's name, but he was a heavyset Asian man who was wearing a beanie. Do better and hire people with actual customer service. read more

This is a pre-COVID review. The first time I was introduced to the Milk Tea Lab was at the Boba Festival in San Jose a couple years ago. They stand out in my memory because not only did they serve milk tea, but they also had a large dance crew that performed at the festival. The milk tea offerings are not memorable, but I wanted to give their storefront a try. There is plenty of interior seating inside. The menu and the drinks have a lot of fun colors. I felt like getting something fruity so I ordered the mango lover with boba. It tasted like mango syrup more than fresh mango. It did have fresh mango bits in the drink as well but they were not ripe. The boba was ok, chewy but not a lot of flavor. I wish they could improve their boba, maybe even add honey boba to their menu. Overall the Milk Tea Lab has great aesthetics but the drinks for me are just ok. Honestly, the drinks here are just okay BUT it's so cheap and the sizes are HUGE! So if you prefer quantity over quality then this is your place! I order their jasmine milk tea as well as their tiger sugar milk and both are decent (again I come for the quantity not the quality because I can usually make the drink last for 2 days). This is one of my favorite bubble tea spots in the entire east bay and I'll tell you why: value for money + great customer service + love their teas! First off, we ordered a Large because it's only 50cents more and that's very worth it because you get almost double the volume I think. Also, the Large here looks larger than the equivalent in other bubble tea places - I could be wrong but it's nice to think you're getting more bang for your buck. As a far as the tea itself goes, I taste the tea in it and the amount of milk doesn't overwhelm me. Now, a tea connoisseur might beg to disagree and point out a couple of bubble tea places especially in WC or Berkeley that serve up authentic, quality tea, but I personally can't tell much of a difference especially in cold drinks. Hot teas are a different story but who's getting hot bubble tea? Anyway, I felt like writing this overdue review because I was there on a Sunday afternoon and the store was empty - I'm sure it was way busier pre-covid19. It's an alright boba shop! I got the #1 and thought the drink was standard but the grass jelly is pretty good. I asked for 50% sugar and drink came out a bit sweet. Been giving this place a few chances, but sadly 3rd time was not the charm. Biggest reason for coming here is because of it's proximity to my boyfriend's house and unique sounding items on their menu. This place has a fun theme and youthful environment, good for chilling. They have a selection of board games to choose from the shelf, however a little messy. 1st visit: Ordered a Peach Tonic, which seemed interesting as it contains carbonated water, but in the end, it was just too weird and resulted in a poor experimental outcome. (Haha get it? because it's a lab) 2nd visit: Can't quite remember what I ordered (maybe roasted milk tea) but all I remember was that our order got lost in the queue as we waited several minutes and watched others get their drinks before us. No reparations given :( 3rd visit: Ordered a Matchacha, thinking I probably can't go wrong with this one. The first few sips were good; reminded me of a Matcha Green Tea Blast from Jamba. But very quickly, the drink ices up, all the sips end up being merely liquid, and you're left with a cylinder of ice. Quite unfortunate that it doesn't meet expectations. I have been coming here since they have opened and unfortunately today will be my last time. Their service used to be great but I have had 2 horrible experiences back to back from the same Russian lady. A former team member recommended I get a strawberry lemonade slush and it has been my to go drink for some time now. DO NOT come here if you're expecting good boba and friendly service. Do not even come here if you want your drink made correctly, as ordered. They mistakenly made my drink order wrong, and when I called to politely let them know, they were rude as hell and they refused to fix the issue unless I drove another 30 minutes from the comfort of my home back to their location at 10pm. They said I can't come into their location the following day to get a new drink or refund, even with proof of purchase. Absolutely ridiculous lack of service so I will be taking my business elsewhere--there's so many better boba spots in the area so don't waste your money or time here. First time here. They are located in a plaza close to Safeway. Lots of parking. The girl in the front counter was helpful when asked a few questions. They have sweetness levels so that is a +++++. They have multiple toppings. Their menu is not as extensive or that many to choose from. They have nondairy milk for their milk teas but do not offer other types of milk except for whole milk. I wish they had almond, oat, or even soy milk available. I order the roasted milk tea with boba and light ice with 30% sweetness. The flavor is good and the boba was ok... not fresh but average. The person behind the counter making the drinks forgot to put ice even though it has less ice... I had NO ice in my milk tea drink. He apologized but we only ordered 2 drinks and they have labels on the cups. My hubby ordered the Jasmine Milk Tea w/less ice and 30% sweetness and light boba and his was perfectly made. If I decide to visit again, hoping I have a better experience than the first visit. Oh ... and my hubby had them put some ice because it's 95degrees outside. Update: 11/16/2019 Came here last minute. We were on our way home from visiting our mom from Vallejo and was just craving some milk tea. Ok so an update from last. They are more busy now than our first time visiting this boba place. Call me the evil gremlin, but I wasn't blown away by the Milk Tea Lab like all of my other Yelp friends. Maybe I'm just not as keen on what "real" boba tea should taste like, but this place just didn't do it for me. I've had this place bookmarked for a while now and finally had a chance to stop in on a Saturday night around 9:30. This place always seems to stay busy and it got even more crowded as I was leaving that night. The inside is pretty open and spacious which I enjoyed. There are also lots of games and an adequate amount of seating compared to other boba spots in the area. The periodic boba table is super neat and I really enjoyed the music that they were playing here! I can see why so many people like to come here to chill out with friends. When I examined the menu, I was shocked to see the limited amount of boba teas that they had available. No banana, coconut, pineapple, tiger, or Thai milk tea?! These are some of my usual favorites and unfortunately, they had none of them. The lady at the front counter was giving out samples of their new honey roasted milk tea. I did like it, but it wasn't anything that I would get regularly. I decided to just get it since there was nothing else really appealing to me on the menu. I forgot to tell them no boba and the lady at the counter never asked me if I wanted it or not. I guess I'm just used to being asked, but I'm the oddball who doesn't usually get it. I love boba if it's cooked right, but I only add it in depending on the flavor of tea that I'm getting. I feel that sometimes it overpowers the actual taste of the tea, which it unfortunately did. The boba was cooked perfectly though, nice and chewy. I wasn't a huge fan of the "roasted" tea taste, and they categorized this as very sweet but it wasn't as sweet as I usually like it. Their regular size is actually a decent size for $3.50. I felt like I was being rushed by the lady at the front counter, even though there wasn't anyone behind me at the time. They did prepare my drink super quick, but the service was just average. I'm assuming that this place gets extremely crowded and so they're probably used to just getting people in and out as quickly as possible. I do think it's cool that they specialize in only a few flavors and not an excess of amount of different things. I just wish that they had at least one of the flavors that I drink regularly. This place wasn't my cup of tea, but that doesn't mean that others won't like it. I might come back in the future to try one of their other signature flavors, but for now, I'll just stick to frequenting my other favorite boba joints. read more

The only play with a real large size boba for a decent price. A lot of the other boba places I go to will charge $8 for a simple drink but I feel with Milk Tea lab your really getting your moneys worth. They fill the cup up like halfway with boba and never cheat you out on any of the drinks and food. I have doordashed this place countless times but only been inside a few, love the late hours especially for when I want to order a boba late at night. Heard about Milk Tea Lab from my cousin Ryan LOL I had time to kill after I got off work before my dance class so I dashed right over after I found out that they sell Takoyaki ha ha! Y'all know about my obsession with takoyaki :) I got the Matcha Milk Tea $3.50 and takoyaki (4 pieces) $5. The matcha milk tea was okay, I honestly forgot how it tasted already. The Takoyaki was good but it's pricey! Most places will give you 6 pieces at the least and up to 8 pieces depending on their takoyaki tray/pan for the same price. Usually it's under $1 per takoyaki ball but here's it's a bit over. Not that it's a huge deal, just saying. I know it's Pleasant Hill--not a mecca for amazing boba drinks--and honestly I wanted to really like this place, but I will never go to this place ever and I highly recommend against it. Why? 1) FALSE ADVERTISING! Number 8 on the favorites list shows a drink called Matchacha and in the picture there is clearly some red beans in there with a price under it of $4.00. However, the price does not include the red bean so the price is misleading and you're being cheated when you think you're getting the red beans but you're just getting swindled because you have to pay extra. Don't fall for the old bait-and-switch tactic. They might as well sell tap water for $4.00 and charge extra for everything you see in the picture including the matcha powder. 2) They didn't have any taro when I came here on a Sunday morning at opening. Come on, poor management--get your business together. Taro is a staple at boba spots so without it you're nothing. This is like double false advertising because they didn't put up a sign or something that says there is actually no taro at the moment. Again, you might as well advertise free money on the outside window just to get people in your store. These people are crooks. 3) The music is too loud. I am only giving this place 2 stars because the hourly-waged workers were extremely nice but they have to probably deal with terrible management who like tricking people with false prices.
