Ordered a few pies for takeout last month. The nice part was that it only took about 10 minutes for the pizzas to be picked up. We ordered the following pizzas: 1) Van Dammer 2) Roasted Eggplant 3) Queen All three pizzas tasted great. Because of the wood-fired oven, the crusts had a touch of softness that made it easy to eat. The pies are a decent size that you can end up eating a pie on your own or splitting it with two people. The good part about the pizzas were that it filled me up just right. A good friend of mine is a huge fan of Milkflower and would always want us to meet here after her long trip from Long Island. I always love the brick oven pizza here myself and enjoy the rustic decor and warm vibes offered by the restaurant's staff and ambiance. As I waited for my friend I ordered some olives and ricotta toast to start as the baby and I were quite hungry. The ricotta tastes fresh and is complemented by the drizzle of honey and the toast used as a dipper. The herbed olives were also nicely seasoned. My favorite pizza of course is the spicy soppressata either just the right amount of thin slices of the soppressatta, cheese, and sauce to help each bite feel just as delicious. I couldn't help but nearly eat the whole pie that I was supposed to share with a friend... whoops! The one thing I am begging for that my friend is also disappointed about us if Milkflower can bring back its pea toast that was one of the best things I ever tasted and we enjoyed during a previous visit! My boyfriend's cousin and his wife brought us during a visit to their apartment in Astoria. My first thought was that the name "Milkflower" is really gross but once we walked in and I smelled those glorious pizzas, I forgot all about it. We shared the Chardie Sheen (YUM!!!) and the Van Dammer (good, not great). The Chardie Sheen was one of the best pizzas I've ever had. The speck was delicious and the chard was interesting, I never would have thought to put chard on a pizza. If you are in the area and are craving quality pizza, come to Milkflower! Why oh why must you not have good grub for your gluten free foodies. My partner ALWAYS wants to come here because they have dank pizza... which is true. I came here before I had to go gluten free and their pizza is truly fire. I just wish they had some more GF options. Food: I can still remember that spicy soppressatta pizza mmm. So good. Oh how I miss those days. I recently went back, and asked if they had a gluten free menu. They don't, so the waitress recommended the salads and adding one of their "small plates" for some protein... this would come out to a freaking $28 salad ... come on. You gotta have a more filling, better option than that. I ended up just ordering some shishito peppers, which were pretty good. And then came home and raided my fridge. Service: The service was great and the food came out quickly. Ambience: A nice, cozy place. It can get really crowded and often times, there are waits. Forno Siciliano over on ditmars and 45th is WAY better. After paying $17 for a pizza, I'd like to be full.. Won't happen at Milkflower. The classic Queen is good, but cheap on the cheese. Nice sweet tomato sauce. the prosciutto+pineapple+Jalapeno is good. Really like how they slice the pineapple super thin. The gruyere+scallion one is way too salty. The Soppressata is my least favorite. Tastes like dog. If the pies were $10-13 I think I'd be more charitable, but the cost doesn't equate for the value. Won't be back. read more

Never thought I'd squeeze lemon on my pizza until I had Milkflower's Wu-Tang Clam...We also had the Chardie Sheen (swiss chard, shitake, young pecorino, without the speck) and the Van Dammer (brussels, egg, mozz, truffle oil) and the clam pizza was by far the most delicious and surprising! Of the starters we had (roasted beets, eggplant caponata, roasted octopus) my fave was the eggplant. We came here on a Fridate night and it was SPOT-ON. The place was dimly lit with a lot of flickering candles and reclaimed wood, in a hip casual setting full of diners, but still at a decent noise level. This is a lovely restaurant, helped along by an eclectic and well-curated menu. We tried their popular meatballs, grilled octopus, and shared a pizza pie. The meatballs came with whole cloves of sweet roasted garlic, in a tomato and basil sauce that was perfect on their bruschetta. The wood-roasted octopus was beautifully done, with great flavors of dill and lemon. It was topped with kalamata olives and baby russet potatoes, which were great additions to an already delicious dish. The Wu-Tang Clam pie was a top choice! Pungent and garlicky, with clams perfuming every bite. The pizza was superb, perfectly thin and crisp. I can eat this pie time and time again. Service can be overbearing though, coming over often not to refill drinks, but to ask if we were done with our plates. I grew up with coffee at 50 cents, gas at 50 cents and subway rides at 50 cents. I wonder, did I have dinner with wine or wine with snacks. Now the important stuff, the food. The meatball app seems to be a big seller here. Every other table had an order. It was a delicious mixture of soft tasty meatballs with marinara sauce top with shredded Parmesan. It was slightly salty due to the cheese, but the mixture of beef and cheese exploded with flavor. Three pieces at $9 with one small slice of bread; com'on man. Lay out a few more bread slices, guys. The sauce was awesome. The spicy soppressata pizza was delicious. Soft, light, easy to eat and by this I mean the pie was more of the personal size. I could have easily finish my spicy soppressata pizza by my self. The soppressata was crispy, which I like, but not very spicy. Overall, a high quality pizza that was perfectly cooked. Celebrated my boyfriend's birthday here with a group of 7. They didn't take reservations, but were accommodating and informative about calling ahead to hold a table for us. We ordered 5 pizzas, the bucatini, squid ink pasta with crab, shishito peppers, and crab cake to share. Their pizzas are small enough that one person who's really hungry could probably finish one. My favorite pizzas were the spicy sopressata, and Brussel sprout with truffle oil. I'd eat anything if you drizzle truffle oil on it though. The dough was light, crusty, and chewy with nice air bubbles from the coal oven. They were also really nice about bringing out the cake I brought and even supplied the candles I forgot. Pizza isn't a food I crave often but when I do, I want it New York style thin crust and made-to-order with fresh ingredients. Milkflower is all of this and more. Each pizza is personal sized and cut into 8 slices which is more than enough for one person and perfect for sharing. So far I've tried 4 different pies with 3 different people and the consistent fave across the board is the Spicy Soppressata (tomato, mozzarella, spicy soppressata, basil, chili, honey) - a delicious update from your basic pepperoni pizza; zesty slices of soppressata balanced with a hint of mellowing sweetness. The crust is just right - soft, with the right amount of chew. Bonus points for making their namesake ingredient, the mozzarella, daily in-house. And if that's not enough, all of Milkflower's pizzas are wood-fired, adding a nice smokey char to an already impressive foundation. Minor gripes: The room temperature varies greatly throughout the restaurant but I suspect this can't be helped because of the giant pizza oven. Avoid the seats closest to the oven if you can. What can be helped is the way they serve their wine: in small, cylindrical water glasses filled to the brim. Why not invest in proper wine glasses? Man, I'm going to start this review off with all the bad parts... . ... .... ..... ...... ..... ... .. . Yep, that pretty much sums up the bad. Now for the good...I had been wanting to come here for some time and since 2 months ago I moved ridiculously close by, now was a good a time as ever. Milkflower prides themselves on being a "Hip, rustic choice for gourmet wood-fired pizzas, Italian small plates, salads & craft beers" and they certainly live up to their description. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner on a Saturday night. It wasn't terribly crowded, but they were definitely busy. After about a 5 minute wait or so, we were seated at a table for 2 close to their outdoor dining area. It was muggy and humid out so we asked to be seated indoors where their AC was top notch. Upon reviewing the menu we both had some difficulty deciding on what to order. As an appetizer we pretty much wanted 3 of everything, but when our waiter suggested we get their meatballs we decided to go for that. Their meatballs are served with roasted garlic, a homemade tomato sauce, grand padding (one of the most popular cheeses in Italia according to the Googles) and basil. They were meaty, moist, juicy, well seasoned, extremely flavorful and all sorts of other positive and redundant adjectives that one can use to describe delicious balls of meat. This small plate was also accompanied by warm crostinis which I ate with the whole roasted garlic cloves...they tasted like butter...sweet, sweet, garlic butter. I love when garlic cloves just melt in your mouth {3. For our entrees, my boyfriend went with their "Queens" pizza which has tomato, mozzarella, basil, parmigiano and tomato sauce. I went with their Van Dammer which came with mozzarella, egg, brussels sprout, cracked black pepper and truffle oil...I asked them to hold off on the brussels sprouts because - gross, lol. They had no problem with this and didn't make me feel like an alien for not liking those stupid sprout things. Both of our pizzas were generously sized (ie. humongous) and delicious. Thin, crispy crust with good flavor and delicious toppings. We each had a slice of each other's pizza and we were both impressed by the freshness and yumminess. Our toppings both much have been kind of heavy for the crust as it began to get a little soggy towards the center of our pizzas, but it happens and mine had runny egg juice mixing with truffle oil all over it...mmmmm....so yeah, that happens. The boy was able to pack that pizza away, but I had to save 3 of my slices (and one of his that he had given me) of it and take it to go. It made a fan-freakin-tastic lunch the next day after I nuked it and threw some hot sauce on it. Service, ambience, food and menu - Milkflower has it going on and if you decide to check this place out, I'm confident that you'll have a fantastic dining experience. 5 stars and nothing less. read more

Giving Milkflower two stars is generous in my opinion. My experience of it was of a place that is disorganized, overpriced, and mediocre at best. Arriving, my gf, her friend, and I asked for a table of three. The hostess told us they were going to wipe down a table for us. A few seconds later someone else came up to us asking us if we wanted a table. Yes I said they're wiping one down for us. A few seconds later someone else came by and we went through this exchange again. Dejavu. Sitting down you get to enjoy a few things. The ambiance and decor are very nice. Wood walls and good music. Ray Charles and Chuck Berry were in the mix. I thought that this was going to be a great place. We get menus and sticker shock sets in. Personal size pizzas for $15? Ouch! I got the $10 regular margarita pizza (which they call 'the Queen'). The pizza was bland and wasn't more than two and a half slices of any other pizzeria's pizza. If you want a cola, well you're in luck they have Coke.................. from Mexico so that'll only run you $3 for a bottle. I know I know, it's from Mexico so it probably uses real sugar instead of corn syrup but I'm not crazy for the idea of paying $3 for a small bottle of coke. It probably wouldn't be so bad if it didn't take three tries to flag down our waitress who seemed like helping us out was more a hobby than a job. This review might be perceived as harsh, but I love pizza and I love pizza places. I'm always looking for good, new, and interesting places to frequent. Milkflower seemed disorganized in seating us, their prices were excessive, their pizza was mediocre, and the staff seemed distant. It melted in yiur mouth; however, it was a tad salty. The strings beans were crunchy. The dressing wasn't bad, but I wasn't a fan of it. For the pies, we ordered the Van Dammer and Spicy Soppresatta. We came in around 7 on a Sunday night & it was packed-- but despite being told it would be a 15 minute wait for a table, we only waited 2 minutes. I got a small plate as a starter (the size of the small plates should actually be appetizers anyway)-- I got the crab cake ($15) and the bf got the octopus ($15), and we shared a Chardie Sheen ($16). The octopus was the star of the night, so tender, lemony, and the oil paired perfectly with the toasty yet pillowy pizza crusts. The charred, smokey, grilled suction cups on the tentacles fell off ever so gently, like chicharron of the sea. I just wish the plate came with at least 1 more tentacle, even if it's a small one. The crab cake was really good--it was like 95% crab, which I appreciated, and not some crab flavored stuffing that other places dare themselves to call "crab cakes". Sure, you might say $15 is a pretty hefty price to pay for 1 crab cake, but you're not gonna get imitation crab meat mixed with stoufer's stuffing--you'll get the real deal. Have you ever tried getting enough crab meat from actual crabs to make a crab cake? Let's not even get into the math of it. The Chardie Sheen was unique. I've never had a pizza that thin, and with those toppings--I'm not disappointed. The crust was toasty yet pillowy, not thick and bready like other pizzas. The pizza wasn't a frozen abomination & that's always great to see, taste, and know. I enjoyed it, and would probably order it again if the Van Dammer wasn't sold out. I had my eye on you, Van Dammer... but I'll be back. Sure, the prices are a bit high (especially the appetizers--they cost the same as the small plates), but what you get does taste pretty darn good. We happened upon this place by accident on a walk today, and decided to try it tonight for dinner. Didn't know it was their first night open. The place was packed! All night long, people coming and going. Yay, small business! We were hoping to sit outside but it's not open yet (Bonus: outside garden seating. not front street enjoy the traffic seating.) And they take your app plate away and bring you a clean plate for pizza. Service was pretty good, even though it was crazy busy in there and it was their first night. Some places really take forever to get it together (ehem, Bareburger which STILL messes up my order every single time for the last 2 yrs). We got the arugula fennel salad. Had grapefruit, parm cheese, walnuts, mushrooms, celery too. It was really nice and fresh (Veg is from Brooklyn Grange in LIC). The arugula leaves were giant and spicy. Yum. I thought it was under seasoned and a tiny bit under dressed although heavy on the black pepper. But it's nice, crisp, and fresh. Perfect for a warm night. We also got the "Queen" (otherwise known as a Margarita) and the white pizza. So, let's talk important stuff: the crust. Amazing. Soft and chewy - what you expect from a wood burning oven. But NOT soggy in the middle (I'm looking at you Motorino). I found myself wishing they sold bread I could take home. If you've been to Paulie Gee's (in my opinion THE BEST pizza in NY), and you dream about it like I do, you'll find this crust a close 2nd. The ingredients were clearly fresh. A nice light tomato sauce. But it tasted a little off to me and I couldn't put my finger on exactly what it was. I think it's just straight tomato, not a seasoned sauce. So that might be it. But you should probably judge this for yourself. The cheese is made there and yummy. The white pizza was light even though it had ricotta cheese but most of the flavor comes from the garlic slices on top that are still quite raw and you find yourself biting right into them, a few different times in 1 slice. I like garlic but don't love chomping into slices of semi-raw garlic. So if you're on a date, you've been warned. You end up eating w/ your eyes, watching food coming and going and seeing what your neighbors are eating. The have "toasts" basically bruschetta w/ not the usual tomato topping that looked amazing. But we knew if we had those, we wouldn't have room for pizza. So next time. PS The music was kind of loud. But good music so give and take, right? So far only beer on the menu and lots of different "gourmet" sodas. And Mexican Coke (made w/ cane sugar). Save room for a trio of gelato for $5. A real deal considering it's from il laboratorio del gelato and delicious! Flavors are mascarpone, black sesame seed, and blueberry. Really amazing. I'm usually really underwhelmed by food in Astoria. When new places open I never get my hopes up. But this place didn't disappoint. It's still a baby so there are things that need some work but overall it's very tasty, a nice atmosphere, and the prices are very reasonable (compared to similar restaurants). Boyfriend hates going to Astoria due to parking and the long wait but it was still fairly early so we decided to head out to Astoria to go to Sanford's. I've heard so many good things about that place but there's ALWAYS a line! They told us 25 minutes, which isn't too bad, but we were too hungry to wait.. so we decided to try Milkflower for some good pizza.. and we got exactly that! GOOD pizza! It's a cute place but the tables are too close for our liking but that's expected in any restaurant in Astoria. We got seated right away, the meatballs are so so sooo good. It's a must when you're dining here. I ordered the van dammer which is the brussel sprouts pizza with an egg on top, boyfriend ordered the arugula pizza with sausage. We liked the arugula pizza but it was just too much arugula for us.. we loved the brussel sprouts pizza though. It was so simple yet just enough flavor so it wasn't just a boring pizza. It was perfectly cooked with just enough brussel sprouts on top. The egg is only in the middle of the pizza and I wished it was more spread out but it was still delish! The guys that work here are super sweet also. They made sure our water glasses were always full, gave us new plates after our appetizers, check on us to make sure we were doing ok. Finally tried this spot and boy was I glad I did. Me and my fiancee would always go to Il Bambino which is a couple of stores over, always talking about trying this place. We walked into a nice rustic style restaurant and the brick oven being the focal point. The menu had some interesting appetizers which we loved. The caponata was delicious. Caponata is one of my favorite dishes, growing up my mother would make it all the time. We also had the olives which my fiance loved. Now down to the important food PIZZA!!! We loved it!!! The sauce had some tang, fiore di latte was fresh but most important the crust. Doughy on the inside and leapording on the outside. That's how you know they are using 00 flour, which is the same flour used in Naples and all across Italy. Anyways I give this place 4 1/2 stars and we will definitely be back. There's an area for seating at the front of the restaurant, and a second area adjacent to the kitchen. There's also a small patio out back (!!!), which wasn't open for dining yet. This is an undeniably cool place. It knows it, we know it, your grandma could probably recognize it. The best way I can think of to describe its decor is "industrial hipster" (its spirit neighborhood might be Gowanus). The bathroom was unmarked, which was probably intentional. Our waiter wore a tee shirt with a subtle Game of Thrones reference. Bohemian Rhapsody played in the background, and people sang along. Anyway. The food! We tried the following: Wood roasted octopus, potatoes, green olives, dill: This was a small plate shared between three people, so we each only got roughly one tentacle. But it was a delicious, charred tentacle. I also enjoyed the potatoes and the use of dill. One thing not noted in the menu description is that this dish basically comes in a bed of butter. Spicy soppressata (with tomato, mozzarella, basil and honey): Very good pizza; although I couldn't taste much honey, there was a distinct hint of sweetness to each bite. The spiciness was quite evident as well. Chardie Sheen (Swiss chard, hen of the woods, speck, green garlic, and young pecorino): Wins for best name. I'm not a big fan of chard (who is?), but the prosciutto and pecorino combo were awesome. Surprisingly, this ended up being my favorite dish of the night. I can't quite give Milkflower a perfect rating, though it's difficult to say why. Maybe a touch more honey on the soppressata pizza would've done it. And it was a tad pricey. Finally tried this place tonight after months of wanting to. It's difficult to walk right next to Il Bambino while hungry and not go in. It was relatively empty on a Thursday evening and our pizzas came out pretty quickly. I split the Spicy Sopressata (sopressata, red pepper, honey) and the Superfly Snuka (prosciutto, jalapeño, pineapple) with one other person. The pizzas were perfectly cooked - the outside crust and toppings were slightly charred while still having great texture. I loved the sweet/spicy combination of both of the pies - the Superfly was a little skimpy on the prosciutto, and for that reason I preferred the Sopressata. Service was friendly and attentive. I docked it a star because I do feel it's a bit overpriced. Just two pies and water to drink was over $40 after tip, and I wasn't stuffed or anything. The pies were about 10" and fairly thin. Honestly, I could easily eat two of these delicious pizzas myself if I didn't have to deal with the shame of doing so. Still though, if the pies I ordered were $13, or 2" bigger - I'd feel more comfortable with the price point. Still a great dinner and I'll be back to try more pizzas! read more

Not only the best pizza in Astoria, the best Pizza I've ever had. My fiance and I go here at least once very two weeks and like to mix up the orders depending on what we are feeling but safe to say we have never been disappointed (although my go to is S.T. The Ghost). And even though it's known as a pizza spot, the octopus and meatballs are some of the best I've ever had as well. Although the place is typically packed, the wait is never too long and they are very upfront about how long it will be. Not only that, they always recommend a bar next door to have a drink at so the fact that they go out of their way to give business elsewhere just so that your wait doesn't feel like a wait says so much about the customer service. Also, I'm someone who drinks A LOT of water. My glass is never empty for more than a minute when I'm there, and that's saying a lot. The pizzas here are really flavorful and the wood fired oven gives a nice touch to their dishes. The Wood Fired Prawns ($12) was delicious and favors enhanced by the wood oven. However, don't say PrawnS on the menu when you get just one single prawn! (Nice try by cutting it in half. Still misleading.) The pizzas that we decided on this time was the Abe Froman ($15), and the Corn On The Hog ($16). The pizzas had a good bubbly crust and nice chew to it. The Abe Froman was your typical sausage pizza but the standout was the Corn on the Hog. It really had a nice texture and the goat cheese worked really well with the guanciale (pork cheek bacon) with a crisp topping of young pea leaves. A minus here is that they take a very long time to come out with the food. If you get a starter, it's even longer in between to wait. Regretted our two bite starter when we had to wait another 15 minutes after they cleared our plates and seeing people who came in after us, happily eating. They have wine and bottles of beer offered although they are often out of some of the more specialty beers they get. Menu was creativity and delicious! The servers were attentive and proactive. It was obvious that they used quality and fresh ingredients. Our favorites were the arugula salad, beets, charred octopus, grilled eggplant and zucchini, bucatini, Brussels sprouts pizza and meatball pizza. Cannot wait to return. read more

As Queens star rises, Millkflower is a great addition to the Astoria assortment of spots. It could easily be a joint in Brooklyn, but then the uniquely. Queens vibe verberates. I love Queens!. I had wanted to try Milkflower for quite awhile. It's really residential on this stretch of 31st Ave- nice part of the 'hood. I went early, but folks dribbled in- more adults less carriages. Blistered Shisitos with aioli was a tasty start. A spinach salad was a tad underdressed. Oh the pizza- SUPERFLY-SNUKA is what spoke to me. With tomatoes, mozzarella, jalapeños pineapple and speck- spicy & sweet like me- was splendiferous!
