When we sat down the waitress told us since we weren't at the bar we couldn't do happy hour. I recommend dining here. The restaurant is really about as good as it gets, from the service, to the ambiance, to the quality of the ingredients, and ultimately the food itself. It's a comfortable restaurant in the sense that while everything is of the highest quality, there's not an air of pretentiousness here. Some places make you feel like they're doing you a favor by deigning to serve you. Not Mill's Tavern. From a welcoming greeting, to friendly waitstaff that offer knowledgeable suggestions about the menu, everyone we interacted with was professional and genuinely nice. The menu ranges from seafood to steak, with a fairly traditional approach to the offerings. You won't find experimental cuisine here, just solid, high quality dishes. They have a Tavern Board, which is an appetizer of several house made pates, meats, and accompaniments that is a must have if you like this kind of starter. Generous portions too, which is always a pleasant surprise. I think they offer one of the best steaks in the city. Steaks here are wood-grilled, cooked perfectly, and as with everything else just the highest quality. Sides are a la carte, and again very generous. Do not forgo the mashed potatoes! The have a substantial wine list, with plenty of reasonably priced options to suit anyone's taste. I suggest leaving room somehow for dessert, as I haven't had a single choice that wasn't superb. For some reason I have been avoiding Mill's Tavern... I think that I was under the misimpression that it was a swanky "steak joint". I am glad to admit I was dead WRONG and now I am kicking myself for not coming here sooner! I guess I should start with the food... or perhaps the drinks? Either way, both are seasonally created with uniquely local ingredients. I had a "Beet infused Gin" cocktail... WOW! (Not something I see on most drink menus.) The same can be said about the food. Yes they had plenty of beef dishes, but also duck, pheasant, lamb, fish, pork and even homemade pasta. Who can say no to homemade gorgonzola and sweet potato gnocchi? Everything ordered was impeccable, well thought out, creative and absolutely delicious. If I have not sold you yet... the wait staff also deserved 5 stars. Pleasant and not pretentious at all. I have heard so much about Mill's Tavern over the months I had been here. "You have to try it if you're a foodie!" "You'll love it!" With so many exclamation points in those sentences, who am I to say no?? Well, when you get there you are offered valet parking and are greeted by people who open the door for you. I guess I started off a little irked seeing that we were brushed aside and the business professionals standing behind us were helped first. We did get our seat (I did make a reservation) and were offered a seat. Our waiter was fantastic. Quick to serve, courteous and polite. The food offered here is exactly what you would expect. Fresh seafood, steak, drink list. Everything was as it should but in the end nothing surprised me. Nothing wowed me.... except for the bill. There are so many other restaurants with a similar atmosphere serving similar foods that excite me and wow me every time I go. Providence has a huge countless list of such restaurants so why do you go here?I mean if you want something that is predictable, you don't mind the price and it's easily accessible for the old folks, then this is your place. I checked out Mills Tavern during restaurant week, and despite being a party of one and ordering off the restaurant week/ prix fixe menu, enjoyed excellent service. The dining room is more old school clubby with amusingly old fashioned wallpaper, but the friendly, accommodating (I won't specify how, but I was being a bit difficult) service creates an atmosphere of warmth rather than stuffiness. An eclectic mix of romantic dates, university groups, and families with older children filled the restaurant on a weeknight. I don't think the menu is particularly creative, but it is certainly finely executed. I had the calamari for a starter, a creamy mushroom ragu fettuccine for the main, and cheesecake for dessert. The calamari was good, well seasoned, nothing special. The pasta was a delight, not too heavy and the cheesecake was a wonderful combination of little other flavors. Mills Tavern remains one of my Providence go-to restaurants. I consistently visit for the Happy Hour raw bar specials (every day (Monday to Saturday 5pm to 8pm; Sunday 4m to 7pm.) Oysters, clams, and shrimp are just $1 each. Sit at the classic wood bar with white-napkin service and have a unique cocktail or some really great white wine. Today, the enthusiastic and knowledgeable young Beverage Manager Tom Hughes suggested a perfect dry white wine to pair with my seafood: Chateau de la Ragotiere, Selection Vieilles Vignes, Muscadet, Sevre et Maine, France. 2016. Superb! Feeling a tad like Boss Tweed (for you older folks who may know the reference), I consumed six oysters on the half-shell, six clams and six peeled 16/20 shrimp. I finished with a Caesar salad. A perfect low-carb light meal. Tom also told me that he creates all of the bar's unique cocktails. As a proud Bostonian, I know there are plenty of great places to eat and amazing meals to be had right in my own backyard. However, there is something unique about dining at a good restaurant in Providence. They try really hard and the food tends, on average, just to be more on the ball. My experience at Mill's Tavern really is quintessential of this. I came here with my family for dinner. First off, I expected by the name of the restaurant, to walk into a semi-rundown pub style restaurant. SO not the case. This place is classy and cozy. They have a beautiful brick over displayed in the back of the restaurant. I give this place an A plus for ambience off the bat. We were greeted warmly by the hostess, who seated us at a table immediately. Our server continued to provide amazing service. He was extremely professional and courteous, and showed us a lot of respect. For me, that goes a long way. We probably ordered more because of it. I started with a glass of cab (can't remember what it was) and a half dozen oysters on the half shell. They were amazing, which is what I have come to expect in Rhode Island. For dinner, I ordered the vegetarian curry. For not having any meat, it was amazing! The flavor was incredible and still not too overwhelming (just enough spice!). I struggled to scoop up every last bit of sauce. Yes, it was that good. Bravo, Mill's Tavern! I will definitely return, and have already shared my amazing experience with all my friends! Mill's is amazing. The only reason they lose a star is it's hit or miss whether I, as a vegetarian, can eat anything on their menu that isn't a side. People may grumble about Mill's calling themselves a "tavern" when they're obviously a very nice restaurant, but seriously: their bar is fantastic. If you appreciate a really well-made cocktail, or if you need to see spirits that can't be found in your average TGIFriday's, or even your average nice restaurant, absolutely go to Mill's. I love it when bartenders nerd out and relish giving a customer a ten-point landing on a cocktail they thought they knew. They've even got great happy-hour food specials. My omnivorous friends have fallen all over themselves evangelizing the meat entrees at Mill's, and I'm inclined to believe them. There's certainly a lot of meat. At Mill's, that probably means it's done well, because the joie de vivre of the chef seems to be the magic, and that joie is clearly focused on meat. I get the sense that vegetarian entrees aren't consciously omitted so much as only served when the inspiration strikes to serve a particular entree that happens, unintentionally, to be vegetarian. But when they hit, they hit. There was a goat-cheese-stuffed sage gnocchi they served me once years ago that I still pine for. The atmosphere of Mill's is the sometimes-metaphorical equivalent of sinking into a giant, very comfortable leather chair. This is the sort of place you bring the in-laws from Indianapolis who want to eat a very nice, upscale dinner and really feel like they're buried in the arms of Providence, past and present. It's the sort of place that's casual to people who dress well to begin with. It's the sort of place where you'll blow a lot of money on a really, really, really pleasant evening. It's a good place. I think their best menu are their duck entrees. Not many restaurants have good duck dishes but I think Mills Tavern is one of those few restaurants that does it right! First off I'd like to say I came ere with high expectations, but they were far away from being met. The appetizers, broiled littlenecks and beef tartare were pretty good. Littlenecks broth was a little on the salty side. The entrees were extremely disappointing. The beef short rib was apparently braised for eight hours but turned out to be almost tasteless and bland. My girlfriend ordered the rabbit ravioli where the rabbit was so overlooked that it seemed like it was a dried meat. (later learned that they had someone training on that station for two weeks and seemed confident - they took it off the bill) The bread pudding though was fantastic, which a few Yelpers have mentioned. My family sat our table for over 20 minutes before a waiter (not ours) came over to speak with us about specials and take our drink orders. Another 10 mins later our waitress finally came to our table with our drinks (missing one btw) she did not introduce herself, did not apologize for making us wait (she knew we were waiting, we had complained to the hostess) and rarely paid attention to us throughout the meal, nothing on our billed was comped even though our waitress ignored us for the better part of half an hour. I'm sorry to say but my steak SUCKED. With a dining room with no more than 20 diners during this covid season there is ZERO excuse for the tempature of a steak to be wrong. Despite the extreme overcooking ( mid rare ordered and well presented) the horseradish sauce drizzled on the plate felt like a cheap 80's restaurant and tasted more like mayo then horseradish. Served stale rolls from the day before to start then nice fresh hot ones next, confirming our theory. Also strange , a lemon was garnished on the steak plate. Any modern chef will tell You a lemon should only make an appearance to tendorize a cheap piece of steam. Is continental cusine back in fad? Old and outdated plating. The steak was also over seasoned. I hate to see what my sodium levels will be in the morning. This poor steak was used and abused before reaching the table . Asparagus, mushy and overcooked. I was so tempted to order the tomkhawk and so glad I didn't. I think this place has it's taste in its own mouth . Take your cheap placards annotating someone's special occasion and throw them in the trash . Save the money on them to invest in a better chef. Christ, the outback cooks steak to tempature. AVOID. I visited for restaurant week and was not impressed. For starters, the restaurant week menu is offered throughout the year, so it would have been nice to have a little something extra. Although I suppose it is awesome that they offer a prix fixe year round! Providence is packed with other fine dining establishments that in my opinion serve more innovative/higher quality food, so Mill's the wouldn't be my first choice. Every time I've left this place we've said "wow that was really good!", and my family are all foodies so we're a tough crowd to please. Everything is well put together, the staff is attentive, and the menu is interesting but not overly so. It's a seasonal menu by the way so it changes frequently. My dad got a Wagyu streak here once and oh sweet Jesus that was excellent. It's a consistently well put together experience. I was excited to try Mill's Tavern until I went to their website and found out they're part of the same group that owns Seven Moons "Asian" restaurant in North Kingstown (which is a mess). Service was good, albeit kind of old-fashioned (waiter was a middle-aged guy which is exceedingly rare where I live). The restaurant has a sort of steakhouse vibe, meaning it doesn't feel the least bit modern or innovative (which in itself is fine as well), though it lacked the clubby 'sophistication' of somewhere like Capital Grill. I ordered: Starter: Veal Sweetbreads - These were the strangest preparation of sweetbreads I'd ever encountered. Rather than separate into smaller pieces they served the entire gland (?) as a single unit. It was breaded and fried, and though not bad, having a pile of sweetbreads served like that was not appetizing. It was served on a bed of dressed spinach with candied kumquats and toasted pecans (which were a tad burnt), as well as mounds of duck liver parfait (which was really disgusting and did not complement the other food -- they literally made 5 puffs on the perimeter of the place using a icing bad YUCK). Main: Filet Steak with Bone Marrow - This steak was fine. It was cooked well, and basically faultless, but decidedly average in every way. Filet isn't my first choice, but was swayed by waiter's promise of "loads of bone marrow." What arrived was a half of a 2 inch bone with 2 tiny scoops of marrow, served without a spoon or a piece of toasted baguette (I had to ask for both). The demi-glace was good, but unfortunately, there was nowhere near enough of it (probably could've asked for more on the side, but didn't). Mash side was very average -- could've used more cream and butter. My wife had an OK french onion soup to start, and perfectly good chicken breast (which was, again, kind of uninspired). The recommended beer was excellent (it may have been a Smuttynose from NH), and I believe they had a pretty extensive selection of draft and bottles as well. Reading the menu you'd expect an overly-ambitious chef to serve food which is over-seasoned and affected. There are too many cherry demi-glaces and pickled veggies for a great chef -- this seems like the work of a Top Chef dropout. What arrives, rather, is bog standard food which isn't at all bad, but doesn't excite. It isn't a cheap restaurant, and while it isn't intrinsically awful, I certainly wouldn't go back, nor would I recommend it (esp. when Providence has places like Al Forno, Le Lautterie, Farmstead, etc). read more

The three of us were very excited to attend Mills Tavern together. We were very interested to see the menu because we had heard that it changes seasonally and uses local Rhode Island produce. As culinary students , we can always appreciate restaurants that take advantage of using local and seasonal ingredients. As we pulled up, the valet opened the door and helped me out of my car. Valet is complimentary, which was helpful since the restaurant is on a busy road in Providence. As soon as we walked in we were amazed at all the various awards they have accomplished and we hoping for a great dining experience. The ambiance was set to be romantic and classy, making it perfect for a business meeting or a date night. The beautiful scenery is what first caught our eyes (lit candles, chandeliers, full wine bar stocked,bold wood work and stone walls created a very rustic tavern feel). Mill's also has an open view kitchen and wood burning oven to create fresh authentic meals. We sat down at a table relatively close to the kitchen and were immediately handed menus and served water. Because of our age, we though that our server, Jason, didn't take us as seriously as we would of hoped for. He seemed too laid back, joking about how it had been a long night of work and he was ready to go home. In addition, he didn't seem too enthusiastic or informed of what the menu had to offer. He was unable to properly answer many of the questions we had about the menu. Our experience was enriched with table side service and a presetting to each course. We were amazed at the amount of attention given to our table by the entire waitstaff. The three of us each started with appetizers, braised littlenecks, butternut squash bisque and risotto. Littenecks- smoked tomato and Narragnasett lager broth with grilled chorizo, sweet onions and grilled garlic bread. --- Clams came out in a huge pot, the presentation was memorable. They also gave me a bowl for the clam shells and removed it immediately once it was full and replaced it with another. I was also given a steam towel and lemons for my hands once I was done. The dish was very salty and the bread was served burnt. Not what we were hoping for. Butternut squash bisque- with porcini dusted sweetbreads and sweet potato crisp. --- Well seasoned and the sweetbreads were delicious and added great flavor. The soup was served table side. It was very good, would definitely order again. Apple sage risotto- and braised beef cheeks with foie gras butter. --- Risotto was cooked well, and the foie gras butter made a nice accompaniment. The risotto was plated very beautifully. We then followed with braised short ribs, gnocchi and a Filet Mignon with a side of Mill's mac n' cheese. Braised short ribs- in birch beer with roasted sunchoke puree and pickled celeriac. --- Short ribs were under-seasoned, and didn't have much flavor. Sunchoke puree was smooth and the celeriac was pickled to perfection. Spinach ricotta gnocchi- with panchetta lardons, caramelized pumpkin, red spinach and brown butter. --- The gnocchi its self was very salty, however the caramelization of the pumpkin helped degrade the saltiness. Panchettta lardons were cooked very well. 10oz Angus Filet Mignon- with Roquefort duxelles tart and quince demi glace. --- Was requested medium rare, and was served medium rare and seasoned perfectly. Quince demi glace was a great accompaniment to the filet and would definitely recommend to anyone. Mill's mac n' cheese was baked to perfection and full of many types of cheeses and a crisp panco topping. It was very creamy and rich. Would definitely recommend this as a side dish. For desert we decided to share an ordered of the chocolate cake molten lava cake which was very good. It was served with vanilla ice cream and candied vanilla sticks. We were very pleased with the desert portion. It was defiantly the "cherry on top" to our dining experience. It wasn't cheap to eat there, but the fine dinning experience makes it well worth it. I really, really, really wanted to like this place, as I was attempting to get here to dine for a couple of years. The service was good. However, it was presented as a steak house by our waiter, but there was very little steak options on the menu. As I do not like steak, this did not faze me, but it did seem odd. I ordered scallops which were very bland and our a-la-carte add on side dish consisted of a carrot and turnip blend which was also very boring. They literally did nothing to add flavor to this. Not even salt and pepper. It was like eating baby food, but without the benefit of the convenient pouch. Went here for restaurant week-ended up ordering off the regular menu. Absolutely fantastic. Crab cocktail for an app, my fiancé had a salad. Both delicious and perfect portions. My fiancé had the steak special cooked medium rare- and yes it actually came out medium rare. For my entree I had the roasted chicken. Perfectly seasoned- when I say seasoned I don't mean doused in salt- I mean the chef actually used herbs. So delicious. The decor and ambiance are elegant without feeling pretentious. Icing on the cake? One word: Phil. Our waiter. He was magnificent. Attentive without being annoying. Knowledgeable without being a know-it-all pretentious person. Went here for restaurant week, and left pleased and full, but not blown away. I was with a larger party (7 ppl), but 3 hours is still a bit long for a 3 course meal! They did bring a complimentary app for the table (they said it was an extra, but I think it was to distract from the timing!), which was a nice gesture. My shrimp appetizer was just okay, and my entree (scallops) was nicely done, but not life-changing. The best part was dessert - carrot cake and vanilla ice cream - totally delish!! Some of my friends got sick afterward - we think from a bad batch of calamari. It was super salty. So that also didn't help with my overall impression, and is why the 2 stars. That being said, the setting is beautiful, the service is lovely, and thumbs up for free valet. But overall, didn't live up to my expectations. If I go back, it will be for dessert! read more

Providence still is one of my favorite places outside of New York and New Orleans. Mills Tavern in most ways does not disappoint. It is an elegant in a steakhouse type of way with a bar on the left and an expansive main dining and a couple of private dining rooms towards the back left Started with the pizza with duck sausage and a squash type of sauce, which was delicious and pretty inventive...Never had a dish quite like it. Also had a salad..kind of a letdown, but then again a salad is after all salad For the main, I had the swordfish with a really nice puttanseca type sauce and split the scallops. Scallops were perfectly cooked and on a bed of orzo-cous cous type of grains..very nice Desserts were decent with the bread pudding and a like-able yogurt Penna co-ta with fruit...Food was remarkable. Service was good, but needs a bit of help. We has three people wait on us yet waited for stretches of time..They were all accommodating when they were actually there If they figure out the service component, Mills' will definitely deserve the fifth star, because the food is that good read more

I LOVE MILLS TAVERN! The service is phenomenal, like this place has got a tight ship running and I totally appreciate that. Right down from offering a coat check, to waiting for me to settle in my booth before handing me a menu, to crumbing the table after dinner. The food is based off a seasonal menu so it's always changing and fresh. Everything I have tasted there each has its own note of bold flavor that when combined together is composed of a delicious and beautiful melody of a meal. The atmosphere is warm and classic. Everything and everyone looks clean, especially from what I can see of the kitchen. They offer a prefix menu that consists of : -app -entree -dessert $30 It truly is the best deal not only for the price but the portions. I leave feeling full and satisfied not stuffed and disgusting. The space is classically nice, high ceilings, dark wood, white table cloths. Our waiter was very pleasant and clearly knew the menu inside and out. As a woman who is not big on sugary drinks, I took a risk by ordering their Ruby cocktail. I could not resist trying the strawberry and rosemary infused vodka and I was not disappointed. It packed lots of flavor and was the prefect amount of sweet. Also appreciated that the sugar on the rim was finely ground so you didn't end up having little rocks of it in your mouth. The beet ravioli dish was superb! It had these delicious meaty mushrooms, roasted carrots, and pistachios intermingling in some sort of phenomenal oil dressing. I skipped the salad so I would have room for the seasonal sorbet tasting (raspberry, blood orange, blackberry). While the sorbet was delicious, they all kind of had the same flavor note to them. Hm, so I've been to Mills 3 times now and I still can't say that I know exactly how I feel. Episode 1: fancy schmancy anniversary dinner w my hunny where we went all out and tried some of everything. problem being, there wasn't anything particularly memorable. i'm pretty sure i had venison and i believe it was edible? Episode 2: work dinner in one of their private rooms. now, i do have to give points for decor. they've got the gentlemen's club, cigar room feel down to a T w/o being overly ostentatious. the private rooms are cozy and well appointed w an excellent AV system. again, food not memorable. Episode 3: happy hour 1/2 price raw bar! i can and will absolutely rave about their shrimp cocktail. big juicy crispy perfectly chilled shrimp for $1 a piece. delicious on their own, but it's difficult to pass up on their cocktail sauce w zingy horseradish. oh so good. as in orgasmically so. paired w a lovely rose w hints of strawberry on the first truly spring day of the year? definitely memorable =). therefore... i highly recommend happy hour shrimp (oysters and little necks don't hurt but don't shine), but i'll leave you to decide on the rest. read more

This place is gorgeous inside. I got the calamari app, I didn't really like it but it was blue and that was a cool change from the traditional RI style. I got the rabbit gnocchi. I went out a limb (never tried rabbit before) and DAMN that was soo good. The gnocchi was like nothing I've had before. It didn't taste potato-ey at all. They were like pockets of stuffing/heaven and I loved it! Rabbit was tender, well seasoned and it was refreshing to try something totally new and not be disappointed. We only stop in for apps. but as always the food was great. The sea scallop was done perfectly! Caramelized over the grill it had a great smokey flavor. The other dish was the foie gras and it was done well also. My only complaint would be the fact that some of the veins were left in the liver. The drinks were great with the right amount of each component. Service was impeccable and friendly. I would recommend Mills to anyone interested in fine dinning. read more

This restaurant is GREAT! I went there with a group of people from my company and everyone at the table loved their orders. The staff is excellent and on top of everything. Anytime someone was getting low on their drink the waiter was right there to get them another. Whether it be a refill of water or soda or anoher tastey adult beverage. We started off with the Grand Shellfish Platter (everything was so fresh and amazing), a lobster pizza and some mac and cheese (a team tradition). I order the Prime New York Strip which was cooked to perfection and extremely flavorful. We also ordered the mashed potatoes and pan roasted mushrooms (I highly recommend the mushrooms) for some sides which were also excellent. I somehow found room for some of their vanilla bean crème brûlée and very pleased. The whole team was still talking about our dinner the next day in the office. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. read more
