Have lived in North Carolina for fifty-five years and when coming to Alabama I always stop first for two Milo's cheeseburgers before going to my families for a visit. I'm a big fan of Milo's sweet tea but the fast food chain leaves a little bit to be desired when it comes to food. Wife had the regular cheeseburger combo which came smashed to pieces from the drive through & would have been decent enough but the "sauce" on it is not something we were a fan of. Like barbecue but not, had an odd meaty flavor to it. However, the grilled chicken tender sandwich I had was very good. Super simple with seasoned juicy chicken. I'd get this again. I placed a order through the online order app and arrived about 10 to 15 minutes later. A lot of the employees were busy standing around instead of actually working. I think they had two people with special needs working the grill area because they were arguing over what burgers were made and what we're not made. I literally had to stand there for an additional 10 minutes before I realize that I was probably not gonna get my food. The manager seemed like she was 12 years old and incapable of Managing the employees that were there so I would definitely recommend whoever was working at this date and time be replaced by actual adult. There is not a week that goes by that I do not stop into the Gardendale location for a No. 2 w/ no onions. When it comes to fast food neither the service nor the meal can be matched. Every time I go by, whether through the drive-through or dining-in, all the employees are friendly, and efficient and are able to get me through the line and with my food in hand in a relatively short amount of time regardless of the line length. Ok. I struggle a bit with good ole Milo's. I've been eating at Milo's pretty much all my life. Oh how good those burgers and sweet tea used to be. For so many years. And yet today's Milo's is just a shadow of its former self, a victim of modernization. Today, the tea is no longer served fresh in the restaurants. You could always taste the difference between what was served in the restaurants and what was sold in the grocery. Now it all tastes like the grocery stuff. Like old tea. And today burgers are just wrong. No more is there that extra little piece of a patty on every burger. And the sauce which used to be made fresh in each store giving a bit of inconsistency that varied from location to location is now a gelatinous, bland goo with none of the richness of the original. It's consistent now but consistently bad. The fries have changed little if at all. The pies are good. My kids like the chicken and my mother will drive across town to find a location that is still serving the peach milkshake. But how I long for the Milo's of old. Simple. Fresh. Yummy. read more

The Krinkle fries have some strange orange "fry salt" on them that makes them 250% more salty than any fry ever made. Ok, there's also paprika but you'll never taste it and.....Why?!?!? It's been about 7 years since I've had a Milo's burger! So I was pumped about getting one today. Unfortunately, my experience was less than good. Burger was kinda warm and seemed to have been sitting out a while... definitely not fresh or cooked to order. Fries were cold too... ugh. After complaining about the fries they did bring out a fresh batch right after we got done eating. Which was nice but a little too late as they did not let us know that they were dropping fries when I complained. Staff had a don't care attitude. I've loved Milo's since I was little. We ordered online through their app ("skip the line ... no waiting", they crow), got to the restaurant (which looks like it may have been cleaned 6-8 weeks ago) and were forced to wait in the same line as all others. The counter person was surly and uncertain about what an online order was and how to find/package/present it. I think this is definitely one of those things people remember from their childhood... the nostalgia compensates a bit for some of the short falls. For those of us that didn't grow up with Milos the absence of nostalgia allows us to see this place for what it really is... a burger joint that didn't keep up. They have sacrificed any quality that was present undoubtably to manage costs and survive. You can see it in their menu. They have tried to add choices instead of focusing on being good at one or two things. The best of the best do that very thing... simple, high quality, made to order freshness. Their ice tea business has to be carrying the restaurants. Is that really meat? I have to say... the sauce on the burgers is unbelievably bad. The only way I can image replicating this sauce would be to dice onions, burn them, then reduce heat and cook for 12 hours until they become a brown liquid that causes explosive diarrhea when ingested. Fries are ok... pro tip: fries well done, NO ORANGE SALT! Place was dirty... many table tops still had sauce from previous customers as the indifferent staff doesn't seem to care enough even to wipe down tables. Another example of sacrifice for the sake of costs savings... hire at near minimum wage and you get near minimum customer service (at best). If you have poor quality and poor service why would you expect anyone to come back? Milos Mgr who responds to reviews... have you tried your food lately? Here's an idea, go out west some time and have a burger at In-N-Out... ask any employee if they like working there. They love it, they care, they want customers to have a great experience. Believe me... you can taste it in their food. Do the same to Milos and I think the difference will be obvious. The really sad part... they could easily turn things around. This is the best fast Food Hamburger Place in the World. I stop at Milo's every time I get back into town. In fact this is one of the first places I stop when I get into Birmingham. Come on we all know that "Everyone Goes to Milo's. " I have eaten at several Milo's Locations in my time... The Gardendale location is the best. They have the greatest staff. The best hamburgers and the place is always spotless clean. I even complained about one of the cooks drinking a drink in the back. The manager turned around and said that is the store manager. She went write up to him and handle the situation. I got a free coupon out of it and an apology. But the most significant part to me was the way the employee confronted the boss and was not scared to do so. I think that shows a caliber of employee they hire and the company culture. Every time I go to Milo's I see the same people behind the counter. That is reassuring to me that they take care of their employees. So that makes me believe that is why you don't see toothless drug dealers who just work their because the state forces them too. So take it from a veteran of lots of burgers. Dear God, what I would give to go back in time and avoid ever eating at this place. We were driving up through Alabama and needed a quick place to eat so we figured we'd try it out. The sauce was far from special. The fries were not "seasoned" so much as just covered in an unholy amount of salt that was for some unknown reason a bright orange. The burgers tasted more like an unsavory salsbury steak than a hamburger patty and there are very few toppings offered. Pickles, grilled onions, and Milo's "special" sauce come standard with the optional addtion of cheese. The strawberry shake was also less than satisfactory. The artificial strawberry flavoring was overpowering and left an unpleasant aftertaste. 3 hours later and I am still tasting that Milo's burger and I didn't even like it the first time around. Oy. First and last visit...Went in with my mom and we both were repulsed at what they call a cheeseburger. The meat(if you can call that meat) was the cheapest meat they could get...rubbery and jumpy with almost the same taste and texture of a Salsberry steak banquet meal.
