I'm writing this review only having tried the soft serve, but an amazing soft serve it was. I got the egg tart soft serve ($5) and it was delicious. Super creamy and the perfect amount of sweetness. It somehow emulated the creamy eggy-ness of an egg tart and the little pieces of pie crust or whatever it was on top made it even more enjoyable. They rotate a seasonal flavor monthly so I would highly recommend checking out their other flavors as well, but this one was amazing. read more

I stumbled into this restaurant in the early afternoon spontaneously. I saw people eating outside and read the menu for a bit before deciding to pop inside. I was between the duck and the chili crisp chicken and the cashier said the duck was his preference, so I went with the house recommendation. The food was out quickly and tasted fantastic! I don't eat duck often, but it was so tender and the flavors of the duck fat rice, spicy pickles, and salad combined so perfectly. The restaurant was cute, classy, and very clean. My friend and I tried the holiday sandwich, which had turkey and seasonings on scallion pancake - the pancake was a tad oily and hard (cs crispy), turkey was dry, sauce was too salty. The egg yolk fries didn't have distinct egg yolk flavor. The pumpkin pie bun was cold and the bread wasn't very flavorful. I've passed this place multiple times and had no idea it existed or that it was even a modern Chinese restaurant. Unassuming from the outside, can barely see inside and it has a unique yet traditional door. Once you step inside, you enter another world. Cozy charm, quaint, hints of modern with tradition sprinkled through details with the flooring, seating, tables and general decor. Line gets long after 12PM for prime lunch rush but it moves fairly quick. If you place an order to stay, they give you a stand and number and you pick your seat. There are plastic cups on the side for water. Chopsticks and napkins are available at each table. Food came out really fast and fresh. Soy chicken bowl was good with a bed of rice (cooked okay), broccoli, side of greens and generous ratio of chicken to rice. I love that it came with a large portion of ginger scallion sauce - one of my favorite sauces to go with soy sauce chicken at Chinese restaurants. There is a staff member that goes around to collect plates if you've finished your meal and cleans up the tables. Very clean and organized. Tried the egg tart soft serve. Not bad. This is a nomad gem. My friend and I went for the weekend dim sum special. The interior is clean and well decorated. There weren't many people there which meant the ambiance was peaceful and quaint. Our server was attentive. We ordered shrimp toast, chili crisp chicken, waffle scallion pancakes and the chili cucumbers. My favorite was the waffle scallion pancake, which was flakey and crispy and paired well with chili oil. The crispy chicken was a bit too dry for my taste. This place serves a satisfying, flavorful meal, all at incredibly competitive pricing. This is fast-casual Asian food at its best. To me, this represents what Chinese-American cuisine would be like if the flavors were catered more toward an Asian American crowd vs a solely American palate. Came with a friend and ordered the Mandarin Duck for 2, which came with a variety of delicious sides. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the rice was cooked - perfectly fluffy texture. The spiced cauliflower was excellent, and loved the contrast between the tofu-seaweed salad and the duck was perfect. There was a ton of food, and we both left completely stuffed. Love that they feature some local beers in cans as well. For the price of DigInn or Sweetgreen, you can get a far superior (and unique) meal in my opinion. I saw a video review on this restaurant and I automatically bookmarked it. I ordered takeout during lunch and it took about 25 mins for it for me to receive my food. I only ordered the Yunnan Brisket bowl ($17) since it was lunch but they have quite a few protein options. Pros: The flavors on the brisket and marinated cucumber were beyond delicious. It had a bit of spice to them but not overly hot from the chili sauce on cucumber. Cons: so I'll blame this on it being a to go order but the brisket was on the dry side and I could tell I got the bottom of the pot of rice. I know some people enjoy the crispiness of burnt rice but combining that with the dry brisket didn't help. Overall, I will be going back to try other things on the items just from the flavors alone. The Egg Tart Soft Serve was very creamy, had a smooth texture and craved my sweet tooth, but I expected it to taste more custardy and eggy. It was topped with a few pieces of pastry for what I would guess is a nod towards the crispy shell of an egg tart. However, it is actually Palmier/butterfly cookies. Came by for lunch and ordered the Sichuan spiced cauliflower bowl. Milu is pretty casual: order at the register, then find a seat and the staff will bring your food out to you. You clean up after yourself when you're done. I came when it was still early in the day, so there was only 1 other customer dining in. The booth seats are very comfy and a very peaceful environment to sit in. The food came out really quickly and was really tasty. There was plenty of seasoning on the cauliflower, though not as spicy as I thought. The salad made the meal feel more balanced in flavors. It was surprisingly filling and I ended up with a bit of rice leftover. As someone who has traveled to hong kong and visited at many cha chan tangs (hk diners), the food and decor was excellent! Loved all the hk type foods and decor. Would have preferred it to have less fat and more meat, but it would likely be less tender. The cucumber was so delicious and the rice was of good quality. I loved the watercress cilantro vegetable concoction. All thr flavors meshed so well together! The crispy chicken was one of our favorites. Superrrr crunchy and the chili was delicious (not spicy). I got the wrong type of food the last time I came here -- my thoughts on Milu have totally changed for the better!! Came here again to try the food after just trying the egg tart ice cream which was just meh. The entrees are delicious! I had the crunchy chicken bowl - the chicken was fried to perfection and paired with an excellent pairing of flavors and textures. My friend got the duck which was deliciously fatty and melt-in-your-mouth. We split some dumplings which I thought were above average but nothing out of this world. We tried the milk tea ice cream which was much tastier than the egg tart because it actually had a distinct tea flavor as opposed to the egg tart which just tasted like vanilla. The boba was a bit hard in the middle but otherwise pretty good. Overall, definitely come for the main menu/entrees! They are the standouts at this restaurant. Hidden gem alert!!! A friend tipped me off to this place and we ended up coming here on a Saturday for lunch. I love that you can just order at the counter and then they will bring your food out. It's super cozy indoors (there's seating outdoors as well). There's water available for you to serve yourself as well. I went with the Ginger Scallion Salmon bowl and it was DEEEELOCIOUS. The sauce was so tasty and reminiscent of my grandma's own cooking. Really loved the balance of ingredients in this bowl. For dessert, we went with the pineapple bun (tbh this was okay -- not my fave since it was a little tart), the egg tart soft serve (interesting, kind of mild and didn't really taste like an actual egg tart flavor), and the boba tea soft serve (tasted super true to how an actual black milk tea tastes, and those are not tapioca balls but I think they're chocolate?). Awesome place for take out! I definitely recommend the Yunnan Brisket Bowl (braised and seared, chili garlic mint sauce, marinated cucumbers) $14. I subbed the white rice with duck fat rice for an extra $1 - Super Good. The Yunnan brisket had the perfect amount of meat and fat ratio and the flavors definitely pack a punch. It was not super spicy if anyone was wondering. The only thing with the brisket was that it was very salty and you definitely need to eat it with ALL the rice. The marinated cucumbers were crunchy and flavorful. I believe it is marinated with some vinegar and sugar and a little bit of pepper. Definitely on point. I love this side dish at Asian restaurants. Pineapple Bun was filled with vanilla custard and pineapple curd. I liked fillings, especially the pineapple curd. Perhaps it was because I did take out, the bun was no longer warm and therefore the bread was not as soft as it should be? But I was only 2 blocks away from Milu. I feel like the bun could have been a little bit softer on the inside and filling a little bit more liquid (like the steamed custard salted egg yolk bun). Yes, I know the pineapple buns are not steamed and different. Just a suggestion on how to make it better. ($4) Prices are decent for Manhattan, I mean like the donuts at Wildair are $8. I really wanted to like Milu, this new fast casual Chinese Eatery from a former Eleven Madison Park chef and the Make it Nice team, but the flavors and textures really came up short. For weeks I pored over all of their marketing, excited for their wontons, carefully prepared rice bowls, and sweets, and though I quite liked their pineapple bun, the main event-- the dumplings and rice bowls-- were muted and mushy. Those are two adjectives you don't want being used to describe your food. There are things to like about Milu. They picked a phenomenal interior designer for starters, with an eye for incorporating fun patterns, plants, and even a tasteful neon sign. There are shelves filled with various condiments like chili crisp, oyster sauce, rice and cassava chips, and their fridge is stocked with sake from Brooklyn Kura, their house made hoisin sauce, and cute little jars of duck fat. My inner child loved the Lucky Dog Sake, which is sake served in an adorable little juice box. The novelty of it was enough for me to brush off the cost. This is where the good ends. There are two kinds of wontons on the menu. My meat loving companion ordered the pork & fennel and I tried the broccoli & mushroom. The inside of my dumplings were just mush, and not even flavorful mush at that. No broccoli nor mushroom could be discerned, and to hear my companion tell it, he could've been eating the exact same dumpling, because his was nothing but flavorless mush as well. We both crave a different kind of texture when it comes to dumplings, and I'd imagine most others would too. Our rice bowls held a lot of promise, each with four main components, a protein, rice, a bit of salad, and a veggie. The proteins of each bowl--the salmon in mine, the duck in my partner's-- were the highlight of each dish. The rice, which is described as being covered in duck fat, was indeed oily, but was devoid of any umami. There's not much to say about the salad, but the broccoli in my salmon bowl was charred which is great but it lacked any seasoning. I did enjoy the marinated cucumber in the duck rice bowl, but it's too bad about the rest of it. Aside from the proteins and the cute sake juice box, the pineapple bun might've saved the meal. It was nice and buttery and filled with the classic custard you get inside the sort of pineapple buns you'd find in Chinese bakeries. If the sweets are good, I imagine their milk tea or egg tart soft serve would hit the spot too. I'm definitely interested in returning to try them. There are always growing pains with opening any new business-- I just...didn't expect the dumplings to be so mushy. And for Chinese food, one of the my favorite cuisines because its so rich in flavor, to be rendered so flavorless and boring. It's a self service type of restaurant where you order up front and you get to sit anywhere you want. The place is so cute and the tables and seating actually look so comfortable. Milu is right by my office, so I decided to grab lunch to go. I ordered ahead on their website and the staff was actually very punctual with the pickup time, which is a huge plus during the lunch rush hour. I went with the Chili Crisp Chicken bowl for the day. The portion doesn't look huge for the price, but it was actually quite filling. The chicken was fried nice, crispy, and wasn't really that spicy. The chicken with the scallion mayo on the side is such a great pairing. There were tons of fresh veggies and the tofu seaweed salad was so refreshing to mix with everything. I ordered the chili crispy chicken bowl, Hong Kong half milk tea half coffee drink and a pineapple bun. The rice bowl was delicious! The fried chicken is perfectly crispy and not too spicy. The scallion sauce is perfect. The drink is yummy but way overpriced. The pineapple bun is made in house, small and also overpriced. I will definitely come back for the rice bowls but the drinks and bun are way overpriced. read more

Only came here for the soft serve. The egg custard one was extremely creamy, with really tasty palmier topping, whereas the milk tea one was icier but less sweet and more refreshing. I liked both but preferred the egg custard in terms of texture - if only it were a tad less sweet! Their savory dishes looked good too. Pretty spacious inside with a couple of tables and booths. Cute yet classy, Milu takes fast casual Chinese fare to a whole new level! I came here with my sister the other day and we ordered their chili crisp chicken bowl, soy roasted chicken bowl, and smoked pork and cabbage wontons to share, and were very impressed with the flavors. The chili crisp chicken was crunchy and flavorful, with the perfect blend of oil and spices; the soy roasted chicken was tender and lightly marinated, pairing nicely with the ginger scallion sauce that it was served with; and the smoked pork and cabbage wontons were absolutely perfect. The chili crisp chicken was also served with tofu seaweed salad and watercress cilantro salad, while the soy roasted chicken was served with watercress cilantro salad and charred broccoli, all of which were tasty, especially the charred broccoli. There was a ton of food to go around and honestly, we could've just left it at that. But of course, we didn't. We also ordered a black sesame soft serve to share (because we were feeling really really stuffed by that point) and it was so so worth it! Slightly sweet, rich, creamy, and insanely nutty, the black sesame soft serve was the perfect way to end the meal! Cannot recommend Milu enough! read more
