Came to Minato Sushi & Bar for lunch after walking around Hot August Nights looking at classic cars. So glad we went because the SO and I had a wonderful meal. Located on Virginia Street (about 1-1.5 miles from Atlantis and Peppermill hotels), Minato offers AYCE sushi as well as a la carte items if you're not feeling that hungry. We decided on this particular ayce because they had black garlic ramen, which the SO was craving. The inside is dim with natural light busting through the blinds, warped from the Reno summer sun. We were seated in a half booth against the drink fridge, which felt a little cramped. The AYCE is pretty good value at $25 for lunch on a weekend. This includes appetizers, nigiri, hand rolls, and regular rolls. I enjoyed the hamachi the most as it was super tender/buttery. Some of the fish did end up with a metallic aftertaste, but it was minimal. I should have opted for hand roll version of the rolls I was interested in. The long rolls were more for sharing with a group. The SO's meal of black garlic ramen with a bulgogi beef side add-on (+$5) was delicious and hit the spot for him. Service was great. We frequent Minato because of the broth for the soups is flavorful and delicious. We have tried many different soups in the area and even on travel and Minato still wins. The prices are very reasonable for the soup ranging from probably around $11 to $18 if you get the very large seafood udon. I specifically like the shrimp and vegetable tempura udon as the tempura is yummy and on the side so it doesn't get soggy. My husband Iikes the curry ramen that comes with a pork katsu on the side. My daughter always gets the all you can eat sushi. Nigiri has good fish to ride ratios and the quality has been good. Prices for this are similar to other places in town. The restaurant can get really busy some days as they are not super large. The service has more recently been consistently good as the servers have now been there for a while. There is not sushi bar setting as that other section of the restaurant near the bathrooms is really utilized except maybe the large table for a larger group. read more

Went here the other night and we loved every bite. The Ariel is a must try. They had a basil aïoli that was amazing. I was dipping my rainbow roll in it. every piece of sushi we tried was fantastic and fresh tasting. The space is beautiful and very well set up. Some tables were set up with half booths and they had a bar/party area that was in use. Definitely feels more of a date night/adult atmosphere than a place I will bring my children, which is completely fine!! Sometimes we need more of an adult space for those night. This is a new Japanese restaurant to me, I usually go ti a different restaurant in this same strip mall. You literally have to know how to arrive at this restaurant because it's location is tucked around a side one wouldn't think to go. Being I next to never go out of my way for ramen, this is a new experience for me. I wanted a simple tonkatsu ramen but the curry katsu ramen caught my eye instead. It was truly glorious, the taste was very appealing to me, it was not at all spicy but very good Japanese curry flavoring. The ramen noodles itself was abundant but a little disappointing for me, kinda of a eh feeling, I guess I've had so much ramin my earlier days that it really didn't do anything for me. We found ourselves having lunch at Minato Sushi again; when our 4-person party approached the host's podium and were shown our table, I noted the restaurant wasn't too busy yet, so the host was able to comfortably seat us at a corner table. Once we received our round of drinks, we ordered a round of appetizers like the C.C., fried gyoza and baked mussels. Afterwards, we ordered some sushi like the mountain, King Kong, the Crunch Roll, a few habdrolls like the salmon skin and spicy tuna, and a few nigiris like the Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. My brother and I was really craving noodles and saw this place has ramen. I wanted to try it since we were in the area and it sounds so good on a cold, chilly day. When we went inside, there was another group that was waiting for a table. Shortly after they were seated, someone finally greeted us and got us a table. They got our drink orders and gave us the menu. It took them a bit to come back to us and take our food orders. We ordered: - Spicy Sesame Ramen: This was not spicy even though it was very red in color. The ramen was a bit too soft for my liking. The pieces of meat were good though. - Curry Katsu Ramen: Tasted like exactly like curry. The Katsu came on a separate plate and it was very dry. I think it should have came with a sauce. Wow! I'm impressed by the quality of the fish they had with the salmon sashimi that I received. Full disclosure, I did not try the sushi aspect, I went on a cold night and got the spicy ramen. It was really good and the pork slices were delicious, it really hit the spot! I made the mistake, however, of adding shrimp which turned out to be a mess since they come in whole form (head, shell, legs) and so the ramen broth went everywhere trying to break it down. When going for sushi, one must decide on quality or quantity. Rarely if ever would they ever be the same. This is an "ALL YOU CAN EAT restaurant (AYCE sushi). I normally avoid AYAC sushi. I try to keep an open mind and came here based on a friend's suggestion just to keep him happy. He is more of a quantity over quality kind of guy. They do not offer sushi bar seating. Interesting beer selection that included Modelo, Guinness and other non-Japanese beers. Strange on the menu, they are offering raw Tilapia (a fresh water fish) and selling it as Red Snapper (a salt water fish) One of the items I ordered was scallop nigiri sushi (Hotate). I'm not sure what I received instead and confirmed with the server that is what I received. It was not consistent with any Hotate I have ever been served. *(see photo). No fresh or real crab, only imitation crab they call "Krab". The gyoza was okay. Prices on beer were good. Parking was good. Restrooms were clean. Server was nice. I wasn't offered hot tea at the end of the meal. If your thing is "All you can eat", i suppose this could be your place. This is a one and done for me for AYCE. Edit- one roll tastes like another is accurate. We probably should have read the reviews before we went. I'm glad I tried it to knock it off my list but I don't have a reason to go back. If you try it, keep your expectations low. You might be good getting a single roll to go. Maybe it was an off night. Atmosphere is kinda warm and cozy for the location but it was freezing inside. I had to bring in an extra jacket for my friend who got a table for us. It was a beautiful spring day today. One of our servers was Joseph and we didn't really see him too much. He didn't appear to have much interest and we waited a bit longer than we do at other places for our order sheet to get picked up. The rolls *were* made rather quickly and he did name each roll when they were delivered. That's helpful. They looked good but we didn't get much follow up on if everything *was good*, offers to take empty plates etc and no drink refill for my friend. All the plates we got were taken right before we left when we got the check. We thought we ordered 6 long rolls (we forgot to take one off and ordered 7). The guys making the rolls read the sheet pretty well as we didn't have any mistakes but the various fish, crab mix, even crystal shrimp were flavorless. The strongest flavor was the garlic mayo which we subbed for spicy mayo on a few rolls. The fried scallops on the Rainbow Blossom were very tasty though. We did our best to get through them (The Spider came when we were ready to leave) but we weren't going as fast as we hoped. Sometimes when we think we will have a few pieces left, both being from that "don't waste food generation" we'll ask about taking them and every place has been good about it even if the answer is a "sorry, no". We expect a no and if we get one, they're nice about it. This was honestly the first time we got a snarky "no" and nothing else from Joseph. It took us both aback but fit the disinterested vibe we had already been experiencing. It was almost joyful for him? The girl who was helping him was very nice though. The Spider came as we were getting ready to leave. Since we didn't cross it out, we tried to eat it because we felt bad but the soft shell crab they used was joint meat. It would have been better if we had crossed it off as we had intended. Overall, I think there are enough options for sushi in town that you won't miss skipping it. If you want to pick up a roll for a TOGO lunch, the Rainbow Blossom and the Crunch are tasty enough. The Spider is a "must miss" as the quality is meh. Had lunch here. Good size restaurant with not many people. You can sit at the sushi bar or at a table. You must wait to be seated. Very quick professional service. I ordered the all you can eat sushi. Which was reasonably priced for lunch. I first ordered the miso soup, cucumber salad and edamame. Each was a good size and quite flavorful. I then orded 10 nigiri sushi pieces. They were half the size of most places two pieces for each order but it was perfectly sized to dip, fresh and very tasteful. This is a first for us. Three nights, three different Asian food experiences. At Minato, you don't have to AYCE. A generous amount of options are found on their menu, almost something for everyone. We had one in our party that doesn't eat seafood. That got a bit tricky, but we persevered. We do a style of dining that's a cross between communal, group and shared. It's rare we have less than eight. With an AYCE facing us, dialing back to six didn't hurt. The raw rolls, veggie rolls and nigiri all tasted great and were presented flawlessly. Another chef that understands a proper rice to fish ratio. However, me not being a sushi connoisseur, many of the rolls tasted close to the same. Something I would never order, I tried tonight, a Baked Scallop roll. Maybe I've been short sighted. It was quite tasty. Minato has cooked rolls and a few that are deep fried. I'll leave that for next time. After nearly two years in Alaska, finding fresh, quality salmon and other seafood is a challenge. In an effort to be fair, the seafood here had nice flavour, but wasn't great quality or very fresh. Finally, on a personal note, the atmosphere was a bit dull and lifeless. Holy hell, what happened here? I'm not even being dramatic this is probably the worst dining experience I've ever had. This place used to be one of my favorite sushi spots. Unfortunately, the service here is horrendous now. We walked in, nobody at the host stand, but each server looked at us as they were walking by and did not seat us. 3 different people asked us what we wanted to drink, after we said we already ordered our drinks. Ordered our AYCE appetizers, just for us to hunt down a server to ask for chopsticks. How do you forget chopsticks? Our miso soups were forgotten not once but twice, and it was a struggle to just wave down a server. But magically, the table next to us was getting non-stop service and attentiveness. Just terribly organized and it doesn't seem like any of the servers have sections. Also, there was a girl who was bussing/serving with her HAIR DOWN! I am updating my review as a public service announcement! Our family seriously loves Minato for AYCE sushi and ramen. I had a craving for spicy sesame ramen after skiing, so the hubby and I headed in. He ordered the tonkatsu ramen. I noticed the menu had prices for the toppings, like seaweed, mushrooms, fish cakes, egg, etc... but I figured it comes with all that and I don't need extra. Well, the bowls arrived and looked very plain.... Ramen with half an egg, green onions, and pork belly. I almost cried. I realized that they probably changed how it's ordered and you have to add the stuff separately that they used to include. Both our bowls were very basic. I should have said something but we were in a hurry. I've been ordering the ramen for years and didn't expect a change. Perhaps the server should mention it when people order ramen so they don't cry. The price for ramen is pretty reasonable here, we did not spend much for two bowls of ramen and Donald Duck nigiri for a small appetizer. we spent around $40 for the two of us. I ordered the spicy sesame ramen with extra pork belly, and it really satisfied my ramen craving! The spice level was enjoyable, not super spicy, which is how I prefer. The pork belly was super flavorful, I'm so glad I spent the $4 extra for more! I My fiance ordered the Crazy Man's ramen at level 7, and it was pretty spicy for him, and he can tolerate high levels of heat! This place is just ok. It's not the best place to get sushi, and service can be kind of slow. The sushi just doesn't seem fresh to me. I only went here twice, and it's been a while since I came here so I don't exactly remember what I didn't like about this place, but I probably won't go here again due to personal memories about coming here because of a failed date, unless a friend insists on coming here. I've been dining at Minato on and off for the last ~5.5 years or so and have never had a bad meal. I used to base my sushi experiences on the spicy tuna rolls, which are really yummy here. On one of my most recent ventures to Minato, I got 1 order of salmon nigiri, which was super fresh. The fish to rice portion was great, and it was a delightfully fatty cut of salmon. I also ordered the tonkotsu ramen. Housemade broth is simple and delicious, and they have the absolute perfect noodle texture for my liking. Really flavorful, inexpensive, and nice portion compared to other places I have been. Last time, I got the black garlic tonkotsu, which was good as well. Some of the better ramen in Reno.
