    Roast duck with rice plate
    William O.

I had a great lunch today at Ming Hing. I was getting acupuncture up the street and my acupuncturist recommended I check this place out. This place is so affordable and the food is so tasty! They operate both a sit down area and their counter service, so this place can feel a bit chaotic and loud. It doesn't really bother me, but don't expect it to be a quiet experience eating here. I ordered a Roast Duck with rice plate. I am always so intrigued by the way they make Cantonese style roast duck. It has such a delicious, savory flair to it and the meat is so moist and tender. I always ask for vinegar when ordering such fatty foods as this, and I actually love the sour taste with the meat. They serve the duck meat with a hefty amount of rice and cabbage. The cabbage is actually cooked really well too. For $11 I am quite full and happy! I will be definitely be back whenever I have an acupuncture appointment in this neighborhood!

You can get large party platter size foods like I've ordered Chinese style chicken wings for a gathering before. Order ahead of time in person day before and I would think you can call it in too. Roast pork and cha siu bbq pork are solid choices Pickup orders, go all the way to the back table (not the front deli where people are waiting for meats to be cut). Casual Rice noodle rolls are popular with a few meat choices Parking is hard!

What is this? An okay restroom in a hole in the wall restaurant?! Their restroom was clean, has a clean scent, has an open window for fresh air and plants! The waiters were nice and caring. One guy helped pick up my baby's fork from the floor to wash in boiling water. The food was good and wholesome. A bit on the salty side but some people like extra salty and concentrated flavors. They offered pork offal porridge which isn't common. It was wholesome food!

It's one of those places that if you didn't know about the place, you'd easily miss it. It kinda blends in so well in the ethnic Chinese neighborhood, so nondescript, that they're nothing that sets it apart from the rest of the shops around there. The food is good, cheap and fast. Those are good criteria to have for a food joint. Enjoy the pictures with this review as they's say more than I can ever type.

The food I ordered from this and delivered to my residence was amazing! The roast duck was very tender and very well cooked. The beef chowing fun was amazing too. I will definitely order delivery from them in the future. I highly recommend people try this place out. The service was great too from what other people have said and the ambiance was amazing from what I've seen in pictures. I give them 5 stars ! What are you waiting for? Come try them out!!!

Last review of this place was 5 stars they have fallen down to 1 star because I can't give 0 stars. This place advertised they accept credit cards not only online like google and yahoo, but they even have the stickers in the window when you walk up telling you what form of payment they accept. Sticker shows all major credit cards accepted here!!! But the last two times we have tried to buy a whole duck from them they say cash only!! It has happened twice in two different months. They try but they can't keep saying "the machine is down" it's been two months get it fixed or tell stop false advertising. You need to do better.

Yang chow fried rice and delicious crisp roast pork

So pleasantly surprised! Detailed breakdown below: **Service, 5/5** Super efficient and friendly staff got my party of 6 seated immediately, quickly took our orders, and had our food starting to come out in just a few minutes. **Price & portion, 5/5** The prices were so reasonable and the portions are intended to be shared, so make sure to bring lots of family or friends so you can try more items. Leftovers are fantastic reheated so the portions can stretch for multiple meals. **Taste, 4.75/5** Everything we got was fantastic: signature rice noodle rolls with egg and duck, a pound of crispy roast pork, yang chow fried rice, scallop rice noodle rolls, and crispy salt and pepper chicken wings. Everything was hot, super fresh, and well seasoned -- totally hit the spot for Cantonese-style comfort food. The only item I didn't absolutely love was the shrimp and egg chow fun with gravy as the shrimp and egg topping didn't have a great ratio with the noodles, but it still had great wok hei flavor. Definitely coming back with my family!

2 item bbq rice plate with duck and crispy pork $13

Came again for lunch. We got the 2 item bbq rice plate, shrimp rice rolls, pork cheek meat, and stir fry ho fun with seafood. Ming Hing is amazing value for money. The bbq rice plate was only $13 and came with so much rice and meat. Everything was really tasty. They even give you complimentary soup to start your meal. Ming Hing was bustling on a Tuesday for lunch with lots of locals. Service is kind and attentive.

    Wonton Soup with rice noodles

Not at all bad Cantonese-style restaurant. I tried the wonton soup with rice noodles, which was pretty good. Both the wontons, noodles and veggies tasted fresh. I'd get this again. I wanted to try their rice noodle rolls, but from what I noticed it looked like the ingredients were just placed on top of the rice rolls, rather than actually being rolled within the rice rolls. I guess it's an easier shortcut for them. Portion leans a bit on the smaller side, but not inadequate. Reasonably priced. Restaurant was clean. Workers were pretty friendly, especially compared to other restaurants of similar ilk. Apparently, they're known for their Chinese BBQ. I didn't get to try, but they did look good and legit. Parking can be challenging with metered-only parking.

Its a little hole in the wall, but pretty decent food. I would just say that the BBQ PORK(1LB) was a little dry and the BEEF in both the CHOW FUN and CHOW MEIN were dry as well. All 3 there about $40. Workers are nice and bilingual, which i appreciate because i know English only.

Small bbq shop with seat in available. It is a small restaurant, and I consider clean and not oily like other bbq places. We had lunch and ordered 2 item bbq combinations with soy sauce chicken and roast duck with veggie and rice. We also ordered bbq pork rice roll and a thousand egg and pork porridge. Side order of chinese donut. The food was ready in no time. All are yummy. A minimum of $30 if you want to pay with a credit card. Price is considered very reasonable. Parking could be a challenge in this area.

I love coming here for Chinese bbq. They have some of the best roast duck in the city! I usually order DoorDash to go and pick it up on my way home. It's usually ready quickly and I haven't had any issues. Just make sure you leave time to try to find a parking spot. The roast pork was also tasty and the skin was perfectly crispy and crunchy. The char siu was decent but what I really liked was the honey bbq spareribs. They were tasty, juicy, and fun to munch on. Highly recommend also getting their rice noodles which are the perfect thickness and flavors are dependent on what kind you order!

Finally got to try out this chang fun / rice noodle roll place in Portola! I stopped by Sunday evening around 6 pm to grab some chang fun to go. I called while I was on the way and my order was ready when I arrived. I got the fish chang fun with egg added for a little over $6. Such good value! By the time I got home, it had already cooled down, but it was still good. I did think the rice noodle layer was a bit on the thick side, so I'm only giving 4 stars instead of 5. I need to come back again and eat it fresh out of the kitchen! Usually parking is hard to find in this area, but I was lucky and snagged a metered spot right in front of the restaurant. Maybe it's not that busy Sunday evening.

Ask the Community - Ming Hing Restaurant

Is it under a new owner and changed the name?

We went on Monday and the store is closed, does the business hours correct on yelp or it needs an update?

There is a sign that said remodeling from 3/6/23 when I walked by the place. One of the contractors told me that they probably will open around May.

One note is that parking can be a bit challenging so get there a bit early. The inside is lively and filled me with so much nostalgia with the decor. The staff is really attentive and friendly. I also appreciate the free peanuts and cucumber salad that you get when you're seated. My boyfriend and I ordered a lot of food because we wanted to try so many things! The lamb skewer was super moist and had a nice flavor. The XO escargot with milkbread had a nice buttery, garlic taste. The milk bread was fluffy and when dipped in the sauce it tasted very rich. We also got the clay pot rice and it reminded me of when I had it in China. The rice was crispy at the bottom and well seasoned. My favorite dish of the night was the squab. It was cooked excellently and the skin was really crispy. The five spice powder on the side really brought out the flavor of the meat. The eggplant was cooked well and portion was good but it didn't stand out as much as the other dishes. Overall, I would visit this place again. It definitely lives up to the hype. The squab and and clay pot rice were the stand outs to me but all the other food was really tasty as well.

Honestly, I think I have to readjust my expectations for the SF food scene. If there were no wait/reservation, I would think of this as a very solid restaurant (hence the 4 stars). The beef chow fun is on par with ones I'd get in NYC Chinatown, and was actually not very overpriced. Our server was very sweet but only recommended things that my friend did not love (seafood/spicy food). I was excited for the spicy cabbage, hoping it'd be comparable to the addictive spicy cabbage at Uluh (NYC). I was disappointed. The popcorn chicken was a bit dry; I would not get it again. The mapo spaghetti had heat, but not much flavor, and it was okay for me - worth getting because it sounded intriguing, but fell short of my expectations, especially since I've made mapo udon, mapo ramen, and mapo pie at home that were better. The escargots with milk bread was definitely my favorite; sourcing escargot alone is a plus and it was very well-executed. The milk bread was fantastic, pillowy and soft. Our server was very nice and offered to move us to the cute window seats after we were already seated at the counter, which I really appreciated. However, would I spend energy trying to get a reservation here or waiting in line? Absolutely not. It makes me sad to think that this is the pinnacle of Cantonese food in this city full of Cantonese people, but I guess it makes me extra appreciate food in NYC.

We also got the cucumber salad, Peking duck set, and lava buns. The cucumber salad was med, marinate tasted like balsamic and not too much flavor like the usual kind you get in other Chinese restaurants. The Peking duck was the most disappointing, we had such high hope for how it looked and how nicely it was setup. However the duck was cold and the skin had zero crisp. Some pieces of skin was basically inedible, very tough and impossible to chew through almost like leather or plastic. Don't know how they managed that. One thing that stood out was the restaurant's mandatory 18% gratuity, which is automatically added to every bill. While I understand and respect service charges, I also believe they should come with a reasonable standard of service. During our meal, we politely asked our waitress, Lily, if she could please bring us some soy sauce whenever she had a moment. In response, she audibly sighed, turned her head, and rolled her eyes, which felt unnecessarily rude and unprofessional. Throughout the rest of the meal, whenever we thanked her for bringing our dim sum, she didn't acknowledge us, and simple requests like refilling our water were ignored while she happily chatted with other coworkers and the table immediately next to us (which appeared to be people she knew outside of work). The rest of the staff seemed normal-friendly, which made this interaction stand out even more. Had the gratuity been optional, I would have tipped based on the service we received. Because it was mandatory, paying an 18% service charge for an experience that lacked basic courtesy and attentiveness felt particularly unfair and disappointing. This was my second visit here, but it seems bad service is not uncommon based on other yelp reviews.
