This place has the perfect trifecta of great taste, great service, and great location. My partner and I arrived at the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon around 3:30 without a reservation and was seatedly immediately at a spacious table. The ambiance was clean and moderately upscale. The restaurant was full, but because the seats were spaced out, the noise wasn't level wasn't too bad. Once we sat down, we were offered cold water or hot tea for the table. We asked for both and received them in a timely manner. We were handed a paper menu that we could place our order on, as well as an ipad menu. We ended up just using the paper as all the dim sum items we wanted were on there, but the ipad was a great option. The service was quick and courteous the entire time, and the most calm experience we have ever had at a delicious and popular dimsum restaurant. The best part of the meal though, was that all the food we ordered tasted freaking fantastic AND came out in a timely manner. (We were starving!) Detailed review of food follows: MingHin shrimp dumpling: 4 pieces. Large shrimp pieces inside. Soft and delicious. Siu Mai: 5 pieces. The sizes were quite large. Juicy and flavorful with every bite. Country style dumpling: 3 pieces. Had some bits of herbs (chives? or chinese cilantro?) inside that balanced out the flavors really well. Deep fried sesame ball: 3 pieces. Crispy and chewy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside. The bean paste wasn't overly sweet, which we appreciated. The balls felt a but greasy, but the house hot tea complemented it well. Shrimp crepe: 3 pieces. Each piece had whole pieces of large shrimp inside. The skin had a mochi-like texture and it was super soft and delicious. One of my favorites, but the only complaint is that pieces were stacked pyramid style but the sauce was all in the bottom, which meant that the top piece did not get any of the sauce. Steamed BBQ pork bun: 3 pieces. the buns were fluffy on the outside and jam packed with saucy pork on the inside. The inside had a bit of the pork meat smell though. Baked creamy egg yolk bun: 3 pieces. Seriously the most perfect buns ever. Please try this you will not be disappointed. We took one bite into this bun and both of our eyes widened in shock. Super creamy inside and perfectly crumbly on the outside. We will definitely be getting these buns every time we go. This place definitely exceeded my expectations. I expected a traditional Chinese restaurant with dim sum carts rolling around. I was shocked by two things: FANTASTIC customer service and the beautiful modernized decor. The interior was very clean and spacious filled with comfortable chairs/couches. It was definitely a new experience for me. Some highlights for us: Shu mai - comes with 5 pieces! Super juicy and delicious. Pan fried taro - They use REAL taro pieces and not the powdered kind. Legit stuff. Duck over rice plate- The rice was on the dry side but the duck was tasty. I really enjoyed the sauce. Chives pancake- The pork went really well with the chives. I did wish the dough was a bit more chewy. Baked BBQ buns- perfect balance of sweet and savory. There's an abundant amount of meat in there too. At the end of the meal, they give you some cookies and fortune cookies! Woop woop. In addition, A+ service! We were greeted immediately upon arrival three times. The cuttlefish were tasty but super chewy, same for the spare ribs. Loved the pork belly flavor but I could not get over it being served cold. We went to the one by downtown and I like how modern and pretty the interior is. It is not a traditional dim sum place that is loud with carts weaving in and out. It has table service with large placards where you check what you want. At first I was hesitant because I've been to cartless places and everything comes out over cooked. But this place is an exception! All the dim sum items tasted how they should and were perfectly cooked. The only dish I didn't particularly like was the beef chow fun. Anytime I want dim sum, MingHin is my go-to. Most of the time dim sum is only served at certain times, but MingHin offers it during regular hours which is amazing. I would say I typically order take-out or go to the location in Rolling Meadows, but this was my first time at this location. Board dinner held here annually. We get snazzy and come out to dine together to raise some funds for youth. I had never been to Minghin before and I was very surprised. The food was delicious!! We had a private room upstairs. This place is huge and super busy! We had several dishes served family style. I mean an over the top amount of proteins: shrimp with veggies, chicken, beef and broccoli, duck, short ribs, sesame chicken, pork and I swear more. There was this pork dish cut in squares topped with brown sugar so damn good. In addition to all the proteins, there were several side dishes too! A dim sum restaurant serving Hong Kong style dishes? These are rare to find and without question, I had it bookmarked for our trip to Chicago. This place has been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for four years in a row, including 2019. The restaurant is spacious and beautifully decorated. There is a picture paper menu for you to mark off which items you want. We chose a bunch of dim sum dishes and a salt and pepper fish fillet with rice. Here are some of the dim sum dishes that we enjoyed: - Baby Cuttlefish Curry - BBQ Rice Crepe - Pan Fried Turnip Cakes - Pork Belly Macau Style - Rice Roll in XO Sauce (tastes just like beef chow fun but w/o the beef) Here are a couple that were only okay: - Pan Fried Vegetable Rolls (I've had better) - Pan Fried Green Chive Cakes (the pork was a bit dry) - Sweet Custard Roll (not sweet enough) My dining companion's consensus is that we all loved the pork belly and the salt and pepper fish fillet dishes the most. The pork belly was served with a side of sugar for dipping. Never had it like this before. My guess is that it balances the fat when we eat it? Other popular dishes I hear that are worth trying are their noodles, congee, and rice dishes. Whenever we dine at a Cantonese restaurant I love to use my broken Cantonese. Truth be told, you get much better service. Jing Jing our waitress was such a doll. As busy as the place was, she took the time to chat with us from time to time and made sure we enjoyed our meal. Review for delivery only: Their rocket-fast delivery time from River East to Streeterville (only 45 minutes) couldn't make up for the mediocre offerings on our second attempt. The meat in the Pot Sticker appetizer ($4.95) had a strange, burnt taste on the inside. Our Shrimp Egg Foo Young ($13.95 for three large orbs of egg and noodles) was delivered with a strangely watery sauce that tasted like a blend of chicken stock and soy sauce - not the rich, smooth and unctuous brown gravy we received with our last order. The Orange Beef ($13.95) featured long, chewy strips of beef - some pieces were visibly charred, others were still coated in gooey, raw corn starch - but none of it had any actual orange flavor. I came here as a late birthday celebration a few months ago. The place looks polished and chic. We came here on a Tuesday night. There weren't that many people but the service was kind of slow. Large establishment with good and quick service, once you get seated. We ordered via the piece of paper offered as well as on the IPad. Pretty simple and efficient process. I got the typical stuff that any Asian American person would get +- a couple items (oyster in garlic sauce, and no chicken feet because they didn't see my order...). They used good quality ingredients, however the flavor was just mediocre. Their hot mustard came from packets, their chili oil has good flavor with the baby dried shrimp, but lacked heat. The best part of the meal was the cooked oyster in garlic sauce. Great flavor, but at $5 per piece. Came for some evening dim sum. Seemed to have the best reviews in the area. Was a short wait for a table, like 10m. You order on paper for dim sum and there is a tablet for entrees. I got my usual dim sum dishes, shrimp fun, shumai, baked bbq pork bun... and my fave canto dish, clams in black bean sauce. My gf never had dim sum and chose to order potstickers and veggie stuffed tofu. I liked all of my dim sum dishes. Shrimp fun is my fave dim sum and they make them with nice large shrimp. She ate all the dumplings and said they were good. The veggie stuffed tofu was plain horrible though. Left that one on the plate. The clams were sadly... just okay. The food at MingHin is so good. Everything on the dim sum list is delicious. We really liked the shu mai. They also have other main dishes. We enjoyed the chicken fried rice, green beans with minced pork and salt and pepper japanese tofu. The quantity is also really good for the price and the food comes out fast. We went on a Friday night and it was really busy so it was hard to get the wait staffs attention for things like utensils, water and other sauces, but understandable seeing as there are worker shortages. While Downtown Minghin is definitely not the best dim sum of my life (what can I say, I'm a snobby New Yorker who grew up on dim sum), it's definitely still a treat. Given its geography, it definitely caters to a different audience compared to the OG Minghin, and the Chinatown Minghin is definitely much better. That one has hella good Cantonese food in addition to their dim sum, and the crowd by the door seems much better managed there than the one over here. Luckily, we made a reservation, which I'd definitely recommend especially if you're coming in a bigger group, so we didn't have to wait too long. The dim sum was good - we got the beef tripe (my longtime favorite), pan fried potstickers, shrimp noodle rolls, siumai, spare ribs, and some other things I can't remember. The shrimp noodle rolls aren't their best, and their turnip cake isn't automatically served with hoisin sauce like I'm used to, but it was all pretty good. The star of the show though, something you NEED to get, is the salted egg yolk custard buns. I'm not sure if that's their exact name since my friend ordered them in Cantonese, but just look for their photo (see my photo for reference). They're so delicious and just the ultimate treat. The salted egg is the right mixture of warmth and gooeyness while still having the bun/fluffiness. So so good. Can't believe I've never had this at MingHin before. It seems that if you don't ask for options, they just automatically bring you jasmine tea. You are given a "paper" menu that you can mark your options, or a digital tablet. Great value in a great location. Just steps away from Millennium Park and the lake, there is dim sum at Chinatown prices. Getting here is a little tricky, as MingHin is tucked away behind Chase Bank - it's probably easiest to look for Mariano's - they are right next door. The dining room is really quite nice - there are lots of big tables for groups and the decor is clean and modern. We had a group of 6 and tried a bunch of stuff - stand outs for me were their baked pork buns (a little sweet, like a pork filled donut), turnip cakes, shrimp and chive dumplings and shumai. Standards like potstickers and BBQ were above average as well. Service is fast and pretty good with keeping tea and drinks refilled. For 6 people (no alcohol) our bill was $71 - whaaaat??
