Just like the way I feel on opening day of an anticipated movie, I too was eager to experience all that Mint Leaf could potentially offer me in delighting my senses. Upon walking into the front door, my vision was bathed in swaths of dark red as in the carpet, on the ceiling, and the pillows on every chair. So my anticipation of a blockbuster had leaped to new heights. We were greeted politely but without any warmth or enthusiasm. After we were seated near the the front window on the far right side table, I immediately noticed the crafted almost decorative front cover of the menu as well as the intricate napkin rings. Again my anticipation crept a bit higher as I began to turn the pages of the menu. As I began to scan the pages, I noticed the heading, "Main 1" on page 1, "Main 2" on page 2. And just like a summer blockbuster that begins to take a wrong turn, I became a bit bewildered by the organization of the menu and quickly reverted to finding the dishes I had pre-chosen. While we were waiting for our dishes to arrive, a large party of 10 arrived and were slowly settling into their seats, I began to notice waves of voices swell and break over me until I heard a constant cacophony of sound. In short, the acoustics of this restaurant(on the small side) pushed the sound from the back of the restaurant to the front and if you are sitting facing the back wall it became loud enough on this particular evening that it was difficult to maintain a normal tone conversation. Our food was delivered relatively quickly and in one fell swoop in a quiet unassuming manner. The first dish we dug into was the garlic pepper prawns and it was delightful(prawns sauteed with garlic, black pepper, enoki mushrooms), bold and flavorful without being overpowering. Our second dish was the spicy garlic noodles(with chicken) and it was even more delightful with a rich and aromatic sauce which was almost gravy like. The large steamed vegetables were served in two long slender trays perfect as two individual servings. Unfortunately like many of the summer blockbusters you eagerly build up in your mind, which end with a thud, I too experienced this with the last dish. My hopes for a wham bam of an ending took an abrupt turn when I had my first bite of the Kuala Lumper Ahi Tuna(seared ahi tuna served in a Malaysian red chili-mango sauce) which was not as flavorful as what you expect based on the description and vivid color of the sauce surrounding the stack of ahi tuna which was also slightly dry. We decided to pass on dessert partially driven by the noise level seemingly aimed at my eardrums. Our waitress quickly and politely dropped of the check and quickly shuffled away with nary a word. Looking for food on a Sunday night in a suburb is usually not the easiest thing. We stumbled into this place, after consulting Yelp reviews. Except the Yelp reviews are not the most accurate at times... Looking at the menu, it's trying to sell itself as fancy Thai cuisine. The menu mentions "N.Y steak" and "lobster" a lot, which isn't a problem usually, as long as they deliver -- which sadly, they didn't. We got a mango curry dish, and the crispy trout with fruit salad. We also started with an appetizer but I couldn't remember what it was for the love of God. All I remembered was that it was really sweet. The mango curry arrived and it was really... tiny. A very watery, non-spicy curry with a couple chunks of meat and veggies, not even enough to feed one. The crispy trout looked better, surrounded by shredded fruit, but the seasoning tastes like only fish sauce and sugar. Needless to say, both dishes were underwhelming, not worth the $15+ price tag for each dish. I felt bad stumbling into this place. I felt even worse that I had to pay so much for so little food -- we tried to get full eating the rice. I'm not sure how this place got so many good reviews, as it's not that hard to find a decent [americanized] Thai place in the bay area, but maybe if you have to pay $20 per person for a tiny dish, you need to rationalize it by pretending it's a better experience. I almost totally forgot about this place. Went about a week or so after they had just opened. Definitely a huge change from the deli that used to be in the space. Now I've been to tons of different places in the bay area with the name Mint Leaf but this one is definitely the best of the pack. The owners are Thai but they put a lot of other Asian influences into the cooking. Things had: -Saratoga Curry Puff -fried wonton wrapper stuffed with curry powder seasoned potatoes and chicken,served with cucumber salad and peanut sauce -Toasted Coconut & Grilled Shrimp - toasted coconut tossed in baby spinach with ginger, onion, lime cubes and grilled shrimps -Udon-Laksa Noodle Soup - Japanese udon noodles in Malaysian laksa soup with prawns and mushrooms topped with crispy noodles -Tropical Lemongrass Lobster Tail - lemongrass flavored lobster tail & egg noodles -Blacken Pork Chop - centered cut pork chop with sesame sweet tomato sauce & blacken vinaigrette sauce Everything was delicious. Most Asian fusion places are hit or miss but Mint Leaf does it well. I'm surprised more people dont know about this yet but then it's on the end of Big Basin that doesn't get a lot of play. Mint Leaf you've won me over with your spicy garlic noodles! Came there with a friend for lunch and I wasn't sure what to expect from the mixed reviews. I was a little skeptical at first coming in and seeing so few people, but I was pleasantly surprised after eating my dish. Ordered the Spicy Garlic Noodles with shrimp. OMG so good! I ordered the dish medium spicy which I'm glad had a kick. I was worried the heat level would be toned down, but it wasn't. If you're thinking of the garlic noodles that are served in Vietnamese restaurants this dish is different in a good way. The amazing sauce had the perfect amount of garlic and spices. Noodles were perfectly cooked. The lunch special also came with a pot sticker. Friend ordered the Pad Thai which she said was good. Thai iced tea was good as well. They put whip cream on top. Yum. It was "okay" Thai food, at best. Appetizers are crazy expensive, and weren't great, some of which were burnt and hard. Curries were average, but not particularly complex. Overall the place is way too expensive, doesn't serve alcohol, and has an old fashioned retro Thai vibe -- with really bad Muzak playing. The menu is kind of an mess. One of those places where you feel irritated paying the bill at the end. It's odd, because I'm sure I went here a few years ago and had been modernized, not sure if it changed hands. We originally were going to baitong but there was a one hour wait. So we came here. The reviews were extreme either one star of five so I was wary. The decor is very old and vintage looking. Not a lot of people. We ordered Mango red curry with NY steak beef cubes $16 It was okay... Soft mangoes Chewy steak It's pretty good Bloody salmon $18 Too sweet Just a small piece of salmon in sweet sauce They suddenly changed our plates and serve the food. The portions are ridiculously small. We spent $37 without tips and we expected better. It would be a better review if it was cheaper. Say $20... Pretty impressed with this place. Great decor and lovely dish presentation. Came here last night w/a group of 3 and had the Crab & Cream Cheese Wontons, Steak Salad, Garlic Pepper Prawns, and Pad Thai and a couple glasses of wine. Each of the dishes were presented beautifully and they changed our plates and utensils after each dish, which i thought was great. The Wontons were deliciously fried with a good amount of crab/cream cheese in each bite. The steak salad was fresh & tasty-- dressing was great but they put too much in my opinion. Garlic Pepper Prawns were good a little too peppery and the pad thai was good- interesting because it came out wrapped in egg kind of like an omlette (hard to explain). Definitely a fusion restaurant, don't go there expecting thai food or anything traditional. They have a great selection of interesting dishes, can't wait to go back and try more. Really easy parking, the place was busy enough for a Thursday around 7:30p. From the outside, this restaurant looks very inconspicuous. You wouldnt think it'd be a restaurant at all. We stumbled upon this joint just in time for their lunch special. Apparently the lunch specials are dinner items but smaller portioned. I can't imagine what dinner portions are like because lunch portions were huge! Their food is amazing, stands very true to their menu descriptions. Service was fast and friendly. Every dish ordered came out tasting and looking fantastic. This place gets and extra star for presentation -I've attached photos for your viewing pleasure. I don't usually like asian fusion spots, but this place is a win for sure! I like this place. The decor is very rich and royal, though the pretty bar is only for looks (they should change that), and the menu and billfold have huge wooden 3D elephants. The menu is very big, with some cool lunch specials, and is not as expensive as the other restaurants. My Diet Coke was $4 but at least it was huge and they give refills. Good service from a girl in braces. The pad thai tasted good and the "medium spicy" made my nose run, but the noodles were too chewy. I liked the fried tofu. We came here last year but can't remember what we thought so... we're back! For appetizers we got the dumplings and a side Tom Yum soup. The dumplings are crisp, tasty, with just a hint of spice, and have a light mayo-mustard flavored drizzle. Quite good (4). The soup was excellent, lots of flavor and fresh ingredients (4). Our main dishes were lemongrass lobster with vermicelli and pineapple fried rice with chicken. The lobster was good, slightly overcooked and mild, but with good portions (3). The fried rice was wonderful. Nice juicy pineapple, full cashews, moist raisins... we polished off every bit of it (4). The service and staff are absolutely fantastic. Everything clearly communicated, timely, and with a big smile. That matters! (5) No alcohol is served but you're encouraged to bring your own. Not an issue for me (I love water!) but a little disappointing for my significant other. She actually prefers BYOB but didn't know ahead of time. All in all a great meal! read more

We had dined here for lunch and got the flamin' tilapia (signature dish), the eggplant dish, and the green curry w/ avocado. The flaming tilapia was amazing, had a great dipping sauce, and had a world of flavors. I have never tried green curry with avocado and it was by far one of the best green curries i've had in the South bay. The avocado taste rubbed off onto the curry paste, the chicken, and vegetables. We were driving through Saratoga, saw the restaurant and thought we would give it a try. We ordered the lemongrass lobster ($27), fresh spring rolls with smoked salmon and Vietnamese vinaigrette and pad Thai noodles with tofu, and a Thai iced tea - all for take-out. The hostess who took our order was very friendly and polite and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. We love Thai food and our mouths were watering as we drove home with it to eat. When we arrived home and opened the bag we saw everything was packaged up nicely to go. We opened the containers and plated the food and sat down to eat. First the spring rolls. This was the best part of the meal. They were fresh, and the pieces of smoked salmon were delicious. The roll pieces weren't very big though and the so called "Vietnamese vinaigrette" was basically honey with a little something else in it - not sure what. But mostly because of the dipping sauce the rolls turned out to be kinda disappointing. Next the lemongrass lobster. It was a medium sized lobster tail and it was slightly overcooked, but not too bad. It had some sort of brown paste on top which though a little tasty, was definitely not lemongrass related. Also in the container were some cooked beans, mushrooms and noodles which looked nothing like any Thai noodles I've ever seen but did look very much like run-of-the-mill Chinese noodles. A small plastic container was our last hope for anything lemongrass. We opened it up and tasted it. It was vinegar with some small pieces of lemon rind in it. You read that right folks. Lemon rind in vinegar. The only place lemongrass was to be found was in the name of the dish. VERY DISAPPOINTING - especially at $27. Next came the Pad Thai. I've had Pad Thai noodles from many different Thai restaurants and I have NEVER had Pad Thai that tasted like this before. If weren't named "Pad Thai" on the menu and hadn't come from a Thai restaurant I NEVER would have guessed they were Pad Thai. They looked, smelled and tasted like cheap Chinese noodles. Horrible! One would think that pretty much ANY restaurant could make a decent Thai iced tea. After all, all you need to do is buy the powder mix, mix it up according to the directions and add half and half before serving it. Unfortunately this restaurant managed to make a Thai iced tea that tasted only faintly of its namesake and amazingly ALSO DISAPPOINTED. My guess is that this restaurant was originally owned by people who knew how to make authentic Thai food but has since been taken over by people who know a LOT more about making kinda average Chinese food. SAVE YOUR MONEY FOLKS and try a different Thai restaurant. read more

Thai heat levels are tricky to figure out, I wish there was a "heat sampler" before ordering so one could figure out what level to order. I went here for an early dinner earlier this week. The decor is very kitchy with huge gold swans, hammocks on the ceiling, warehouse style air vents, wooden benches and seats with silk cushions. I did not know what to make out of it but I kinda liked it. I was annoyed that they did not have the AC on during a heat day but give them a pass since there were very few of us and I have a low tolerance for heat. The menu looked very interesting. The actual menu card was cool too, it had some art work on the cover. The food however was just was OK. I had the puffs as an appetizer which was good. There were 4 of them and they each came in dish that looked like a little boat. However, the margarita chicken entree was a big disappointment. The chicken was chewy and a little dry. Plus the sauce tasted like low end hot and sour sauce that you get in the grocery store. The presentation for both items was really good. I know this is Saratoga and prices are higher but still, for a $15 "Thai" entree, I expected it to be better. Service was mixed. They were very sweet but kept disappearing on me for long periods of time. The restroom was an interesting experience. It is in the back by the kitchen and I could figure out how to turn on the light! It was Sunil proof. They get extra credit because i had forgotten my wallet in my car and they let me go get it. Love the decor & ambience! Perfect for a romantic date or even a get together with the girls. Their presentation is phenomenal. Top dishes I recommend: Garlic Spicy noodles with chicken (these are more like Udon noodles, but better) Chicken Satay Green Curry Chicken (it comes with avocado! so unique) The only thing that I don't care for about this place is the overwhelming menu options. I've always felt when a restaurant has too many options, there is less consistency & may even take away from the experience. But other than that I loved everything else about this place. Must try the Saratoga curry puffs for appetizer! Nicely fried with curry on the inside and a very savory peanut tasting sauce to dip. I had the garlic noodles which was tasty however you can barely taste any garlic. It was more towards the sweet side due to the sauces. Boyfriend had the salmon curry, which he did not care for because nothing about the dish stood out to him. Service was decent, however I was disappointed that we were not notified about the vegetarian menu they offer until well after our order was put in. As a vegetarian, it is often a very nice surprise to discover a restaurant has an entire menu dedicated to vegetarians. Unfortunately, I was unable to even glance at it.
