Just call me Mrs. Claus, because this Christmas I have a couple of five-star reviews to hand out...something I don't do often. I had a fabulous Christmas Eve off of work yesterday and after enjoying a five-star lunch at Mendocino Farms next door, I asked Yelp about nail salons nearby. Beauty Quest popped up just down the block and with 4.5 stars I was hooked. After trying four other nail salons since moving to Costa Mesa I think I've found the best one -- something I actually hesitated to write a review about because this place is small and seems to have high demand. Appointment only. Oops, yep, I walked in without one. Mai was really gracious and after checking their appointment book she told me if I could wait about 30 minutes they would be able to take care of me. Little did I know she was accommodating me past their intended Christmas Eve hours. Such great customer service, seriously. She said she noticed my broken nail and "had to help me" ha ha. There are only four people who work at this salon, which Mai told me she and her husband opened seven years ago. It sounds as though they have a loyal following of good clientele and after the acrylic fill, repair and pedicure (OMG, Annie and the leg massage -- amazing!) I could really see that they take a ton of pride in their craft. They are incredibly attentive and ask you exactly what you want -- shape, length. I even muttered I probably needed a new set of acrylics soon, Mai shook her head and told me I didn't (no up-sell? WHAAAAA?) It looks like they only use OPI polish -- they had the newest winter 2014 collection, yay! -- AND something I've yet to see elsewhere, they use the best top coat in the business (Seche Vite). Usually, I wait to write nail reviews to see if they hold up, but I already see the quality difference here... THAT being said, you get what you pay for. (Or in this case, you pay for what you get, ha ha) $25 fill, $33 pedicure, $3 repair = $61. $73 with tip. Ouch. As much as I love this place, I'm not sure I can swallow that bill every two weeks. Hopefully my nails hold up for three so I can justify the expense because this place is the best in Costa Mesa, no question. read more

I love pedicures. LOVE them. I rarely pamper myself in any way, and wait way too long in between pedis, so when I go, I really want to relax. I usually find myself walking out to the car criticizing the work that was done, bummed that I spent the money. NOT SO here!! I walked out the the car feeling like I had happy, gorgeous feet! My husband was shocked that I didn't get into the car full of complaints. I couldn't say enough good things! (he said that I need to go there every month because it would be worth it if I was that happy and relaxed...we are talking about adding Beauty Quest into the budget!). Christine Su is awesome. Awesome, I tell you. She is so sweet. She asked several times if the water temp was ok, the pressure on the massage was good, etc. And when she asked it seemed like she genuinely wanted to know. She made me feel as though making me feel relaxed was the most important thing that she needed to do all day. Yes, it is more expensive than many other places. But I am an EXTREMELY frugal gal (ok, ok, I guess you could call me cheap) and I would pay it and will definitely pay it again, and again, and again! I can't wait to bring my friends! This is also random, but a little old strawberry farmer came walking into the shop around closing time (random!), and the man that was working made that man feel like he was a welcome friend. *** ZERO STARS *** Have you ever wondered whether or not nail techs were talking smack about you while you were sitting right there? Well, I'm here to tell you that 99% of the time, they are, but how would you know? Unfortunately for Beauty Quest, I am Vietnamese, and I understood everything they said about me. I won't spell out the entire conversation between the manicurist and pedicurist. All I have to say, is that it was derogatory. After taking it in, I repeated what they had said in Vietnamese to each other in English. ***Long awkward pause*** The manicurist immediately tried to backtrack and pass it off as a misunderstanding. Bull$hiz. I heard it, and the fact that neither one of them looked me in the eye for the rest of my appointment confirmed it. No acknowledgement, no apologies, no class. In fact, the pedicurist immediately became ice cold and short with me. Guilty much? Now I thought long and hard before writing this review because after having just moved here, I haven't found a decent nail salon yet, and this place gets good reviews. I didn't want to base this review solely on how I was treated (although I think it's justifiable). What finally drove me to this was upon closer inspection of my nails. First of all, the manicurist cut my finger. That's not supposed to happen, is it? Second, my pedicure is sloppy. This might be due to the fact that they were trying to get me the hell out of there, but still, do your damn job and paint my ENTIRE nail, not just the middle. There are nail salons out there where the employees have some sense and decency and don't talk shiz about their customers. I've been to them in other cities. FINALLY I had the opportunity to try Beauty Quest (the nail salon, the myth, the legend!) for myself! I've had one hell of a week. The kind of week where you just want to cry at everything, or run away, or watch Sesame Street in the fetal position while sucking your thumb. Dejected and heartbroken seemingly beyond repair, I was rescued by my friend Ashley W. who offered to take me out for some mani-pedi therapy. (Thank you, Ashley!) Man oh man, did Beauty Quest save the day. For the 90 minutes I sat in their massage chair, incredible duo/owners Simon and Mai buffed, filed, and massaged all my troubles away. Not only did I receive the best mani-pedi known to man ($28/pedi, $16/mani), but I was treated like a queen. The steaming towels they used to relax my aching muscles were the icing on the cake. I left Beauty Quest with a little bit more of a skip in my step, a little less strain in my brow. Not once did I wince from a misplaced nail clipper or overzealous callous exfoliation. The massage lasted for much, much longer than any other salon I've been to, and it was a GREAT massage at that. From the health questionnaire you are asked to fill out as a new customer, to the selection of ONLY OPI polishes, to yes, the ridiculously clean facilities and tools, Beauty Quest is better than ALL the rest. The owners take great care to go above and beyond every step of the way, even down to the manner in which they sterilize their tools. They are certainly worth the extra money for the pampering that you get. (I'd say the cost is about $10 more for a mani-pedi than the dirty salons out there, well worth it for my piece of mind). Just a heads up, the first timer discount is $5 off now, not $10... but still appreciated! Also I do recommend making an appointment because it's much easier. Promoting businesses like these are what yelp is all about. Had it not been for yelp, I would have passed by this place a million times and never known it was there. I didn't think a place like this existed, something between the frou-frou priciness of an $80 day spa pedi and a sketchy $20 when-did-they-last-wash-these-foot-tubs hole-in-the-wall where the techs alternate between yapping on their cell phones and yapping to each other -- and you're pretty sure it's about your hairy knees. I went based on Kat's recommendation during my lunch, and they were super polite and nice even though I didn't have an appointment. They offered me the $23 express pedi and seemed very apologetic it wouldn't be the full-on one. Much to my surprise, Christine was so meticulous about buffing my callouses and making my polish perfect that I was there for well over an hour. If that's express, I'm down! My toes look absolutely perfect, the place is super clean, and the massage made my eyes roll back in my tired head. Love! read more

Best pedicure ever! A friend of mine needed a mani and pedi for a wedding she was going to be in, and she asked me to tag along. We searched yelp and found these awesome reviews for Beauty Quest, so we made appointments and came by one afternoon. I have pretty much stopped going to get pedicures at nail salons. For me, it is supposed to be a relaxing and pleasant experience, but it has become more like harassment. From the second I sit down in the chair I am bombarded with, "Do you want a flower?" "Do you want an extended leg massage?" "Do you want parafin wax?" "Do you want lip wax?" No, no, NO! I don't want those things! I told you I wanted a basic pedicure! If I wanted you to paint a flower on my toe, I WOULD ASK YOU TO PAINT A GODDAMN FLOWER ON MY TOE! So, my toes and feet have suffered as a result of my general disdain for the up-sell techniques of most nail salons. My poor feet. :-( Beauty Quest is not like this...thank GOD. Another review mentioned that it was somewhere between the cheap salons and the fancy and expensive spa salons, and that is right on. This was a high-quality pedicure, with an excellent massage and great attention paid to everything. It was a little more than a pedicure at a run-of-the-mill salon, but it was worth it for the time to relax and blab to my friend about my drama without being interrupted with a hundred "Do you want callous removal?"s. A few other awesome things to note about Beauty Quest: their tools are sealed, the place just smells clean, you can see that the place is disinfected and kept up, they gave a $5 discount if it is your first time there, and they speak English, so no wondering if they are talking about you and/our your gross feet right in front of you. They are also all VERY nice and helpful. Finally...getting a pedicure is a pleasant experience again! Just in time for summer! read more

Such a little shop located in such a shoddy area. Hahha. I came in wanting to get a pedi and gel nails. Well, the pedi was nice since they massage for a good while (But, Traci's nail salon still gives the best pedis) however when it came to my gel nails....uhh...wtheck? By the next day the gel was already lifting off my nail bed. Wow, I didn't put down 50 something dollars for a crappy job. I had to go to another nail salon (a japanese place also in costa mesa) and have them fix it for me. They looked at my nails with scorn and also commented that gel isn't supposed to be placed on top of fake tips which Beauty Quest did put on me. Wasted a lot of my money. read more

I've tried a few manicure places but the last one put me over the edge. They buffed my nails so much that it looked like I had nail polish on... permanently. And they nicked my cuticles and made me bleed in a few places. No longer will I be going to super cheap places. It was also annoying that I couldn't understand what they were saying to me. After a while, you just nod and smile to anything they say and hope you didn't just agree to some extra service. In comes Beauty Quest. Found them on Yelp and with all the excellent reviews, I had to try it. Their prices were reasonable. Not super cheap but not expensive like some of the high end nail salons. I went for the gel nails. For someone who bites their nails, it's a miracle worker. My nails have never looked better. What's even better? I can actually understand them! Mai always takes her time to make everything right and she knows what she's talking about. She really seems to care about the welfare of your nails and takes time to explain how I should care for my nails. I haven't tried their pedicures yet but I believe what everyone's talking about. Every time I visit, there are people in those chairs and they're usually still there by the time I leave, an hour later. I can't wait to give it a try. Let me reiterate: Still the absolute BEST mani/pedi a gal can treat herself to. A few things: DO make an appointment. I know, I know, what busy gal has the time to schedule a mani/pedi, we go when we can, yadda yadda -- but Beauty Quest is worth it. There's only a staff of three and they really focus on each client 100%, hence the need to make an appointment. This is not your chop-shop/drive-thru of a nail salon like every other joint out there. Do expect to be in the spa chair for a good hour or more for a thorough pampering session. (Christine gives the best leg and hand massages.) If you're really pressed for time, let them know in advance and they can condense the services to say, just a quick polish change and cuticle/nail shaping for a lesser price. And on top of likely being one of the cleanest, most immaculate nail salons around (you'll always see them use sealed instruments out of an autoclave AND no acetone or chemical smell permeating the salon at all, yay) -- the nail technicians at Beauty Quest are very gentle, something I really appreciate. Price for a mani/pedi is about $10 more than other joints, but I can honestly say that I'm happy to support such a top-notch salon and for the quality of the services. If you're searching for an easy birthday/Christmas gift -- they have gift cards available too, something I've given to several girlfriends of mine already. read more

By far the best pedicure I have ever had!!!!!! I just got home from my pedicure with Christine Su and it was nothing short of amazing! I came straight to my computer to yelp it was that good. She took her time and made sure everything was perfect. The salon itself is super clean and I like that they play classical music and don't have soaps on. Another plus not a lot of yapping. Beauty Quest is truly the diamond in the rough of Orange County nail salons. At first glance it may not stand out, but the level of service, skill & cleanliness is by far superior to any other nail salon I've been to. I've had hard gel nails on for over 5 years meaning I go in every other week for a re-base. I am always messing with my nails & have perfected the art of popping off my fake nails, which drives my poor nail technicians crazy. Since I have been going to Mai at Beauty Quest, I have nearly ditched this bad habit because there is no sense in trying. I don't know how she does it, but I've never had gels that look this natural & stand up to my constant fidgeting. It's a Miracle. At Beauty Quest, they say "cleanliness is our top priority," and they mean it! A lot of time & effort is put into maintaining a 'medical facility' like clean. You can trust that everything has been sterilized & you don't have to wonder about how many germs are floating around in your foot jacuzzi, because there are none! I believe the owner even went through the trouble of customizing her spa chairs so that there is absolutely no chance of having any used water or residue from spa water transfer to the following pedicure. She's thought of everything! The whole staff is sweet & friendly. And they are all very skilled. You can get a service done by anyone of them & you'll be happy with the results. They all take so much pride in their work. They are very reasonably priced! It seems to me that when I go to other places, say to get a pedicure, I end up spending way more than I originally planed for a basic pedicure because of all the little add on costs. That is not the case here, they don't try to up-sell you into more expensive services. The attention to detail and quality of service you get at Beauty Quest, even the most basic service, will come out better then any of the other places including all their add-on perks. Beauty Quest is a small operation with a small staff, so my advice is to make your appointments ahead of time because they are booked from opening to closing. Thank you fellow yelpers for recommending this place! It was a bit hard to find because it's one of the middle stores in a small shopping strip, but look closely for it - you'll be glad you did. I've lived in five states and frequented many nail salons, and this one is by far the best one ever! Here's why: 1) They are meticulously CLEAN! The tools are sanitized and opened in front of you, the mani/pedicurist wear gloves, and you can see them sanitizing the pedi pool with bleach between clients. Also, when you walk in, the place doesn't even smell like a nail salon, it must be well ventilated. 2) They are detail-oriented. Instead of just scraping away the excess polish with their fingers, they use a paintbrush dipped in polish remover. Their work is PERFECT and last for weeks. 3) No up selling. Everything is included in the price. They don't harass you to get extra services. 4) The staff is very friendly and attentive. They all speak English and listen to what you ask. My only warning - make sure you have at least 1.5 hours to spare because that's how long they'll be working on you. The only time I go to nail salons is when I want to spoil myself, so I don't mind the time. If you're on a time crunch, you should tell them up front. read more

Love this place! I walked in at the right time! I didn't know that they usually don't take walk-ins but I came early enough for them to take me in. I forgot who did my nails, but she took her time on my pedicure, which is a plus! This nail salon isn't just your average nail salon where they bug you to pay extra for a flower or if you want this or that. They simply just give you what you want without all the questions! They are very clean and have many color selections of OPI nail polish, and I love that brand cause it lasts for more than 2 weeks! I wish I wasn't writing this cuz I don't want to have the hassle of not getting in, but I have to share when there are so many horrible nail salons out there... Anyhoo, the owners are super nice; friendly, but they don't talk your ear off the whole time if you just want to relax. Also, communicating with them is not an issue, and no pressure for extra anything. You know how it is ladies when you want to relax and every 10 minutes you're being asked, "extra massage?" "flowers for $5 more?" Oh yes and the massage! Super long on the massaging, and the best part of this place: CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN! Seriously, you want to know that tools are sterile and they aren't using the same tools on you that were just used on Franny Fungus Feet. This place is THE best nail shop! They are SUPER clean and friendly. 1st time client's get 10 bucks off. It's been a little over a week and my mani/pedi is STILL going strong! They don't try to up sell you and the best is the convo with the friendly and amazing staff. The massage chairs rock! Lot's of OPI polishes that are brand new. The guy was awesome, used a little buzz saw thing to make sure he killed my callouses (I don't get the places that charge like nearly $40 and don't remove them...wtf). He even paid attention to where my tension was when he massaged my legs/feet to make sure he got the pressure points. Amazing and quite lengthy. Tipping is done at the front to avoid uncomfortable situations. Oh and yes, they do accept appointments and infact recommend them. The only downsides are the location (hard to find, but just look a couple doors down from Ruby's) and there not being a lot of room to put my magazines and cellphone and whatnot while getting my pedicure. read more

I went here on a lark with a friend of mine, and had an amazing experience. I typically don't get pedicures because my feet are so sensitive that trimming my toe nails or filing them leaves me writhing in pain. Every nail place I've been to in the past (15+ different places) has been either unsympathetic to my weirdly sensitive feet, or haven't understood due to language barriers. It's been a weird torture for me throughout my life that I only undertake for my one friend, about twice a year now. Anyway, this same friend talked me into a pedicure, and through the power of Yelp, we ended up at Beauty Quest. I was uncertain about the whole "make an appointment" thing, but I was wrong. So, so wrong. When we walked in, the first thing I noticed is how incredibly clean and peaceful it was. There was one other client there getting her nails done, and then just us. Everyone there was incredibly nice and professional. And when I mentioned my weird foot sensitivity, they were completely understanding. The woman who did my nails (Christine) was incredibly gentle and thorough. The ladies took their time, and not only gave me the best leg massage I've had from not-a-massage-therapist, but I got to hang out in a a massage chair for the duration of my pedicure. Overall, I think that my pedicure took a little over an hour. This isn't a place to go to if you have a tight schedule and don't plan for it taking up an hour an a half of your day, and that's awesome. At no point did I feel rushed to leave, or feel like I was being upsold on an unnecessary treatment. Freaking amazing, let me tell you. As for the quality of the pedicure, I'm seriously impressed. Christine filled a crack in my toenail perfectly (I'm not a graceful person), and the paint job looks very nice. There's no weirdness about my cuticles, and they're all even. I felt no discomfort during the pedicure, which is a first and is very much appreciated. I loved the entire experience so much that I made an appointment on the spot for my next pedicure, and as long as I'm going there I'll be doing it more frequently than every six months. I seriously cannot recommend this place enough, especially to anyone who's had a bad experience in the past with larger commercial places like I have. read more

Yes, they take FOREVER (about an hour and a half) for a pedicure, but it is worth it if you have the time and patience. Their attention to detail is fantastic and the polish stays on for a long time. Even my fingernails stayed polished longer than usual. The staff is so nice and focused on you, it is shocking. The staff seems to be very small. I have only seen 4 people working there, but I have only gone on weekday morning/afternoons. But, I would still recommend calling for a reservation. The shop is very clean, and the polishes (all OPI) are well displayed. The prices are a little more ($16 mani, $28 pedi), but you don't have to pay extra for callous treatment, which is something I always have to get. read more

I hate to spoil all the fun by giving this location its first 4-star rating but when I went to this spot (because Yelp told me it would be amazing) I liked the service and the job they did on my toes but I kinda wish they would have been a little quicker. And by that I mean give me the Express pedicure I asked for.. not one that lasts over an hour. Don't get me wrong, I love getting treated and beautified but I had somewhere to be and did not think it would take 1 1/4 hour to give me a pedicure. It just seemed like he was working kinda slow. I get a mani/pedi (with gel nails) every two weeks, and when it's time for my next appointment, my nails still look great. My pet peeve is salons that try to upsell the entire time you're there -- additional services and products. I also hate feeling rushed. I never experience either of those at Beauty Quest. They really do strive for and achieve the level of service that makes you feel totally pampered. read more

I heard about this place from a friend. I needed waxing, remembered about what my friend told me so I called there and they get me in in 10 minutes. I'm so happy I went there! The lady I had (sorry I'm really don't remember her name) was so good! First, she was gentle and tried to do her best not to hurt me. She was very thorough and checked twice that no hair is left. Oh my gosh!! Just got a facial from Mai and can't believe the value. Have always liked it here because of the thoroughness of the staff led by Mai but that facial was incredible! From toes to ears and head I was cleaned, buffed, puffed and cared for! Everything they do here is top notch. Salon is quiet, no crazy chatter or tv. Just lovely music. No turn-over in staff; I always know who'll be there. English spoken so I'm in on whatever is being said although the chill vibe really sets them apart. Absolutely an amazingly happy experience at Beauty Quest. I went there for the first time last Thursday. I just moved to California from Florida. I am VERY picky about my nails. I definitely do not believe all mani's and pedi's are the same with cleanliness being the only difference. ( as someone mentioned in a review when I was searching for the best place to go) Simon was funny and gave me the best pedicure ever . He took great care of me and we had awesome conversation. Mai is a doll and Christine is also super friendly. This nail salon is SUPER SUPER Clean and they take pride in that. Make sure you go in with enough time. When they say Manicure & Pedicure, they mean it! You will be sitting in a CLEAN Massage chair relaxing while getting an amazing massage and service to your hands and feet. Are you tired of going to get a pedicure to relax and then you get badgered to death with them selling you extra services and the extra charges that go with it?? You will NOT get this at Beauty Quest. The nail technicians at Beauty Quest do a FABULOUS JOB on your nails and they last!!! And it is absolutely the BEST PEDICURE I have ever had. What a find. It is a bit more ...not much and about the cost you would pay with the upsells at other salons without being badgered! Tip: make an appt as they do not have that many technicians which is great because you will not be thrown to someone who is inexperienced. Do yourself a favor and try Beauty Quest! read more

Unhappy with the nail place I've been going to for almost 2 years, I decided to come on yelp and figure out where was the best place to go. I went off reviews I read here and gave it a shot. Unfortunately, my experience was probably the worst nail salon encounter I have had. I went in for a completely basic set of pink and whites. No gel, nothing custom, pink and whites acrylics. No exaggeration, I was in there for almost 2 hours. I had a hair appt. about 20 min away at 2 oclock, showed up at Beauty Quest around 11:50AM, and I was late. Not only was I there for 2 hours, but only to get the worst set of pink and whites I've EVER had! Before I could walk out, the white was turning yellow, each nail has a straight across line(very unattractive), and not one of my nails looks anything like the others. I don't know what was going on the day I decided to try this place out, but I was exxxxtremely disappointed. As far as I'm concerned, $43 and 2 hours of my life down the drain. UPDATE!!!! : About a week after writing this scathing review I realized that my nails not only looked bad but the lady had glued the acrylic to my nail bed(skin) and buffed my nail to the point where its red and sensitive everywhere. I REALLY WONDER WHY THEY MAKE YOU SIGN A WAIVER BEFORE GETTING YOUR NAILS DONE.
