First time there, last time there. Shortsighted business model. Walked in solo at 2:35, sat at the bar to order quickly, was informed by the front desk that they were closed for lunch. I asked what time they closed as one of the three pairs of diners in the restaurant were just being served their food. The response was that the dining room was closed for dining but I did have the option of ordering expensive sushi as take out until 2:45 on this 94 degree day. I was so hungry by the time my parents and I finally stopped at Misono for lunch that I was uber cranky and so lightheaded I nearly passed out walking from the shopping center parking lot. Upon entrance I immediately let out a sigh of relief. It was a sunny, clean space, with a koi pond in the front (I love pond gardens). Most importantly, there were only two other diners (2 pm during the week) so I knew I'd get my food fast. They had a very extensive menu; I was impressed with how many vegetarian options they had and how clearly they were all marked. I was especially excited to see well-priced vegan lunch specials (I've found ordering vegan sushi a la carte to be cheaper than getting it in lunch/dinner specials). I chose the tofu teriyaki bento box (my first bento box ever!), my mom ordered their special-of-the-day roll (some tuna & salmon combination), and my dad ordered some meat bento box thing (I didn't pay attention). As expected, service was super speedy. There was a ton of food in my all vegetarian bento box - 3 pieces of tofu, 2 pieces of cucumber/avocado maki, a fried dumpling, a green salad, a cold bean sprout salad, a scoop of white rice, and an orange slice. Sadly the food was 'blah' (indifference), bordering 'bah' (inedibility). The silken tofu may have been fried, but was so engulfed by the gross goopy sauce that I couldn't be sure. The rice in the sushi was way too sticky, overpowering all the other flavors in the sushi (my mom agreed); I was glad I didn't order sushi. The dumpling was good, but greasy. The green salad was not memorable and I dislike bean sprouts in general. I couldn't finish my meal, leaving the restaurant very full but very unsatisfied. They do have these cool seat-helper things on the benches (see photo) so you can sit close to the table and still have a backrest (if you just sat on the bench without, the table would be way too far away). I haven't seen those little gadgets before, finding them new and somewhat entertaining (even though they make it harder to slide in to the corner seat). I was in for lunch the other day and the chefs were talking and yelling obnoxiously loud. My Bento box took over 1/2 hour to arrive and the waitress went MIA. We picked up a friend while in Boston to grab dinner and we headed to Misono. It was great. It's a very updated restaurant and very comfortable. We tried a few different appetizers, one was a huge ball of spicy tuna with avocado (yum) and another was the fried dumplings. Those were delicious and served hot. The tempura was delish too. I had the chicken fried rice for my dinner and I really liked it. It was a smidge bland so I added some soy sauce and that made it even better. My boyfriend got sushi and it was delicious. Extremely fresh and really tender. Highly recommend! One interesting thing is that on the seats of the tables along the bench they have like, a little chair without legs that sits there to help provide back support. Most of the tables were occupied, so that's a good sign..I got avocado and eel roll almost 6$ and the spicy sushi which had..salmon and spicy mayo, also almost 6 so each piece was about a dollar each. And they are not BIG pieces though..just regular size..which i think is small. so 12 pieces didnt fill me all the way... The spicy mayo was..actually spicy..compared to what i had when i was in Asia. It was pretty good. The eel and avocado..was a bit mushy. The ladies at the counter were nice. Editing my review to add: the owner reached out to me shortly after my review and was horrified about our experience. I felt that he was extremely sincere in his apology and believe that this is not standard practice for the restaurant. We've eaten here regularly for over 7 years - so far as to say up until last week it was our favorite local restaurant. We ordered take out on a Saturday night and when we arrived to pick it up they were on the phone extremely distracted. It was obvious they had given someone the wrong take out and were trying to get them to come back. When they finally noticed us standing there they let us know our food wasn't ready. We sat and waited. Around 20 minutes later someone came through the door with a bag of take out and handed it back to the wait staff. They put that bag of food with ours and let us know our food was ready. THEY GAVE US TAKE OUT THAT WENT HOME WITH SOMEONE ELSE. That is disgusting, unsanitary and frankly illegal. We asked for our money back and will not he returning. It's a crying shame because we will miss this place a lot. read more

So, maybe this should be a 2-star review, but they are just so rude there I can't give it to them. I've been going there from time to time for years. The sushi is decent. It really is. But they are so consistently unfriendly and disrespectful, it's borderline ridiculous. They NEVER say thank you. They ALWAYS seem annoyed. They began charging for extra wasabi and ginger (even though they raise prices frequently and have decreased the amount they give you to go). This restaurant has changed management over the last five years. It used to be mediocre and now it is great. They now have a real sushi chef and not just someone who wears a baseball hat. I've eaten the best and this is close. They also serve Korean food but I'm not the best on that. The wait staff is friendly and efficient. The greeter needs to learn to be more sociable. The restroom should have paper towels. But the place is clean. Never eat sushi anywhere on a Tuesday and never eat discounted sushi. I keep returning to this restaurant. A friend and I stopped in here for lunch on a Friday. The decor was cute and I couldn't believe this gem was hiding in the plaza! Their lunch menu is overwhelming, and the fact that they have pictures on their menu makes your mouth water for everything! It took me forever to decide. I settled on the steamed shumai and the chestnut hill lunch sushi combo. My friend ordered the tofu bibimbap. Both were served with a bowl of miso soup. The miso soup was pretty tasty, although I thought the greens were a bit undercooked. There wasn't as much tofu as I would have liked in the soup either... my sushi was average, but for a $8.95 lunch special for 12 pieces, I am not going to complain. My friend's bibimbap looked really good as well! The shumai was unforgettable, regretably. Overall, I would say the Sushi Rolls are average. This was my second visit to Misono. First visit I had the Lobster Explosion I was not really impressed or simply not what I expected. I would have to say the Shumai for an appt. was great. Fried and Steamed. Tasty! Second visit-Hurricane Roll it was pretty good. Normally I enjoy spicy mayo in my rolls but this roll was pretty good with the onions straws with honey drizzle. The service was pretty average both visits. Prices are affordable Specialties rolls average from 12.00 to 17.00. Will visit again but going to check out some other Sushi places since I am new to the area. read more

Let me begin by saying I have been supporting this business since 2006...on a regular basis. The food is always excellent. I am also giving only 1 star for the sake of the waitress, not for the rest of the experience. Otherwise, I would give zero stars...she saved them from that. Pre-pandemic, my best friend and I have had a tradition of going to their restaurant once a month, if possible, since we both lived an hour away from the restaurant (we both used to work up the street). The restaurant only did takeout orders during the pandemic, and just opened about a month and a half ago to dine-in. So tonight was our first time going back in 18 months. We walked in at 6pm, and things were initially great. We got into our regular rhythm of ordering apps and sake. Our waitress was extremely sweet and social, especially once we were the only ones in the restaurant. Dinner was fantastic. Then, 8pm hit. At that point, four other parties converged on the restaurant, and the experience fell apart for us. Our waitress was the only one there working all the tables. Eventually, the owner and a manager jumped in. At the same time, they were fulfilling takeout orders. We understood service would slow down and we were very patient, feeling pretty sympathetic for our waitress. However, we heard the owner at some point shouting at one of his managers about an order. All of us in the restaurant turned to look in their direction at the back, and then looked at each other. It was incredibly uncomfortable. I then watched him as he was chugging a glass of red wine in the wait staff area. He clearly was stressed and couldn't handle the action. There was no hiding the fact that he was done. Our waitress eventually came back to us and we asked if we could order a glass of wine around 8:30, which she got us after about 15 minutes. No big deal. Around 8:45, we noticed that the sushi staff removed all their fish and started cleaning. About 5 minutes later, they shut off the lights behind the counter and left. We became anxious and asked her if we were okay to sip our wine, and she said she had to check with her boss. Five minutes later, she returns and tells us "go ahead and take your time!" We asked her what time they close, and she said 9pm, but not to worry and we can hang out (as you can see on Yelp, it says 10pm). We relaxed a little bit. It's now 8:58. The owner also leaves at this time. The manager tells the waitress she will show her how to close up. We assumed we were good. And to help, we made sure we signed the check and gave a tip over 20% since the waitress was a gem. At 9:10, the manager comes up to us and says "sorry, but you need to leave now." We were incredulous. Why serve us wine if you were shutting down at 9? Of course, at this point, they got our money and did not care that we tipped extra for the service. She stared at us as we chugged our wine. We walked outside in shock at 9:12 and stood in front of my car wondering what exactly just happened. At 9:15, our waitress comes out, gets into her car parked next to mine, and tells us to have a good night. The manager locks up the door, and jumps into the waitress's car saying loudly "I'm so late, I'm so late" as she sees us staring at her. Clearly, they didn't clean our table in a post-pandemic world (we heard the owner tell the waitress not to bother until tomorrow morning). And we were obviously holding her up after we gave her our check. THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE BY UPPER MANAGEMENT WE HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. I need to mention that during the pandemic, I regularly supported their business. I ordered on a monthly/bi-monthly basis, would chat with the owners to keep faith that they would open up again, and would make it a point to tip over 20% for takeout orders to help support the staff. As a healthcare worker myself, I have been very sympathetic to frontline staff and what they are going through every day. But to kick paying customers out of a restaurant after everything we did to ensure we were doing things the right way was not forgivable. The pandemic hasn't been easy on anyone. For us personally, we were looking forward to finally having our tradition back and escaping our daily stress for a couple of hours. This wasn't the way we expected it to go, and we cannot continue to support a business that only cares about hitting their bottom line and not caring about their customers. If you cannot handle the dine-in situation, either go back to takeout, or shut down your business. Either way, your staff are the ones who suffer while you continue to line your pockets. They (the cooks/sushi staff/waitresses) are the sole reason you have a business to keep open at this point. Plenty of feedback on this feed about how much management sucks here. And your customers have an option to choose at this point. Do better. read more

Although there are plenty of vegetarian items on the menu, the people who work here at Misono don't seem to understand what vegetarian is or why you wouldn't want random meat in your dish. I ordered a vegetarian soup that I have ordered at other asian restaurants many times and I noticed it tasted off. It was later that I realized it had all sorts of shrimp in it. When I called the waitress over she couldn't understand why a vegetarian wouldn't want shrimp in a vegetarian soup. She acted like she was doing me a favor by putting shrimp in it. No apology, nothing. After this, I waited almost a year before I was willing to go back. I ordered Japche with Tofu. As I'm eating it I realized that there is chicken in it. Not just one piece of chicken that could have gotten in there by accident, but several. This was takeout, so I called them. Again they acted totally confused why I wouldn't want chicken in a vegetarian dish. Never again. If you're vegetarian or vegan, avoid this place. They don't get it read more

The quality of the yaki udon here surprisingly outdoes their sushi. I was underwhelmed by the quality of my unagi roll, as well as my spicy tuna and avocado roll (sorry I didn't take pictures), but the yaki udon is a MUST-HAVE from this place. It could use more udon (noodles) but the broth is well made. The parking lot Misono is located in is shared by a series of other businesses (e.g. Gary's Liquor, a dry cleaning shop, CVS, etc.). Nevertheless, you will most likely always find parking because this area is more of a "stop by for a sec" place than "let's hang out for hours" type one). It is located diagonally from a busy intersection, so whether you are walking or driving, stay alert. The staff at Misono was just OK. That said, here's a friendly reminder that a little personable chat (no matter how busy it gets) with your to-go or dine-in customers goes a long way. Speaking of dining in, I still don't recommend you do so anywhere so we can finally graduate from this pandemic, but if you must, they require proof of vaccination. Not a very well-run restaurant. I called at 530 to ask if they took reservations and they said: not until 800. I said we would be five people and asked if it was crowded now. He said he didn't know. We ended up being a party of three, so we decided to just go. When we got there and I said we were a party of three, they asked if I had a reservation. I explained I was told they do not take reservations until 8. She explained that's because they are so busy. There was nobody waiting for a table. She repeated: three? I said yes. "Sushi bar?" she asked. I said no, a table. She told us to wait and she vanished into the dining room. She returned less than 60 seconds later, looked blankly in our general direction (not at me) and announced: "party of three?" I raised my hand (we were the only people standing there). She walked us back to the dining room and at least HALF the tables were empty. Before I get to the food, please note that there were still empty tables when we left. I do not understand the confusing game of reservations/no reservations. The menu is impressive: varied, creative, reasonably priced. I looked forward to our meal. I had the crispy tofu and the shrimp/vegetable tempura. Another person ate sushi and ordered the dynamite roll and sushi regular entree. The third person had a house salad and the orange chicken. The crispy tofu was not crispy, but it was tasty; and although I thought it was listed as spicy, it was sweet. My tempura looked, felt, and tasted like it had been frozen and reheated. It was not "fresh" by any stretch of the imagination, but it was edible. The house salad was massive, and the orange chicken was a bowl of tiny nugget size breaded "chicken" pieces in a syrup. Flavorless and clearly frozen and either deep-fried or microwaved. The dynamite roll was ugly to look at and as soon as you scraped the "stuff" off the top, it sort of had some flavor. The sushi regular entree looked gruesome. The person ate a couple pieces but left the greyish color fish (the vast majority of the platter) untouched. The service was fine, our server was friendly and efficient. With a 20% tip we spent $112 for junk food. I mean food that was pure junk. Perhaps I am too picky and spoiled by living in New York City where Asian food is plentiful; but, no matter, this was flavorless, unappealing, factory-processed food sold at a high price. If you want Asian food, or any ACTUAL food, go anywhere else in the West Roxbury/Brookline area. There are plenty to choose from and you should remove this place from your list of options IMMEDIATELY. read more

We are long time customers and fans of Misono. This is our most favorite place for Korean/Assorted Asian cuisine. There are some items on the menu that are always exquisite -- and others that just never quite win favor. We've learned what to order and what to steer clear of. The help is always pleasant, gracious, polite. Sometimes the women are hurried and not as attentive, but we are glad they are busy and that this keeps the food fresh. The Sushi bar and chefs are authentic for the most part. Sushi is fresh and we love the tuna tartar. The scallion pancake appetizer is the best ever, anywhere. Takes awhile to make (could it be homemade?), but we love it and the soy/fresh garlic dipping sauce. We also always order the okdahl bibimbab. Hot, wonderful sizzling rice that gets crispy as the entire stone bowl keeps the veggies and chicken or beef hot inside. This is their signature dish and is the best we have had anywhere. Anytime we have strayed it has been with regret. We stay away from most of their pork and eel dishes, along with several chinese food options, which don't stand up to the others. I stopped in today for lunch to satisfy my kimchi jigae cravings, and I'm really glad I did! The stew was served scalding hot, as it should be, and there was every ingredient you could ask for: tender pork, chewy rice cakes, soft tofu soaking up the spicy broth, glass noodles, scallions... perfect. The serving wasn't too large, either, which was a relief. They could be a little more generous with the number of banchan, but the three that they brought to me (kimchi, bean sprouts, and spinach with sesame oil) were tasty. Service was prompt and friendly-- even a server heading to another table offered me a "how are you?" as I was settling in with my tea. It's not bad, but it's not memorable not like Genki Ya in Brookline or Fugakyu back when it used to be good 4-5 years ago. Standard salmon rolls and Philly rolls but the lunch special rocks! For under $12 you can get 2 rolls and a miso soup. They do take-out and the wait isn't very long - a plus. Service is nice and the atmosphere is like any typical Japanese restaurant complete with koi pond and bamboo walls. The spicy pork bibimbap is friggin awesome. Get it with brown rice. Saucy, hot, and full of delicious flavah. Easily accessible by car since there's a huge parking lot! If you're for some reason conducting business here for more than 2 hours (getting a mani/pedi at Miniluxe and then dining here for lunch/dinner for instance), be careful because they tow! Sometimes I am crazy and hike all the way from Quincy to visit this place. The atmosphere is usually very calm and quiet until nighttime where it gets very busy. Most of the customers here aren't asian so don't be surprised if you walk in and people look at you weird if you are asian. This place serves both japanese and korean dishes. I have gone here a couple of times to get korean food but on my last few visits the quality is lacking and the flavor isnt there. a lot of the korean items on the menu seem subpar as most people come for the japanese side of the menu. I reccently visited this place on wednesday and they aren't as clean as they used to be, the flavor profile isnt there, the quality isn't good as it once was and the service isnt as nice and friendly as they once were either. read more

A nice option for pan-Asian cuisine in the suburbs Misono is located right on the VFW in the Chestnut Hill area of West Roxbury. In a small strip mall, it is unassuming but beneath that glowing purple sign is one of the area's best-kept secrets. Getting to and parking at Misono is easy, too. The ambiance is simple and relaxed. The service is excellent, quick and attentive. Misono specializes in sushi and Korean cuisine. You will be able to get a good pad thai here but most who really know Misono come here for sushi or Korean. For starters, the steamed shumai, harumaki, and scallion pancake are excellent. Particularly notable is the chicked, mango, avocado lettuce wraps. Refreshing and tangy they are a great set up for the meal to come. Regarding sushi, Misono has the standard rolls but also offer a variety of innovative and delicious creations. The Super Crab Roll is a crab tempura roll with a heap of crab salad on top. The Hurricane Roll is tuna, spicy mayo, rice, a taro wrap, and then fried taro on top. Spicy, sweet and crunchy, it's their very best roll in my opinion and highlights just how great their sushi is. I will temper my raves with one caveat: if you are looking for sashimi, I did not have a good experience when I ordered a sashimi bowl. The hamachi was tough, not as fresh as I would have hoped, and cut into pieced that were too large. For Korean cuisine, Misono shines too. Their bibimbap (hot stone rice bowl with veggies and meat of your choice) is among the best I have had. If you get it, order it with the marinated short rib (kalbi/galbi). It's delicious. Their bulgogi dinner is also delicious. For Korean soups, their duk mandu (dumpling and rice cake soup) and yukaejang (spicy beef stew) are superb. You get excellent value for your money at Misono. I moved in around the corner from Misono and they're one of my new favorite sushi restaurants! I've definitely had better sushi, but this is high quality sushi at a reasonable price, and some of the best variety I've seen. These guys have all the standard maki you'd want plus a large variety of custom creations, which is what keeps me going back (traditional Japanese restaurants, while nice, are a dime a dozen). They also have great fried rice and pad thai. The fried rice isn't really all that fried or greasy... very light and great for a high carb meal. =P read more

I go to Misono fairly regularly since it's literally right down the street from my house. But I would not go out of my way to go here. First of all, aside from Cheyenne, the service is non-existent. They get the job done, sure, but there's just nothing outstanding here. The servers just don't make any connection with their customers. The sushi bar is always "backed up" so you have to wait loger for sushi items than kitchen items. You would think that a place that gets a lot of sushi orders could scale the staff accordingly to prevent the back-ups. The food is pretty good, once you actually receive it from the backed up sushi bar and your un-friendly server. Not a bad place to eat Korean food and Japanese sushi. When I first walked in it was clearly a little on the empty side so I thought it was funny and that the host said do I have reservations when I said I needed a table of 3. Anyway , the place seems pretty clean and modern. I ordered the sushi Dynamite,Korean kalbi pork fried dumplings and spicy squid or calamari. The sushi was fine but I'm such a sushi snob that I could tell they weren't using double a sushi grade. The barbecue beef Kalbi was fine but I could tell that the beef was not fresh they do not have an open grill like they do at most Korean restaurants. It seemed like it was marinated for a while and it might have been cooked earlier in the day but seeing that I was starving I didn't seem to care as much at the moment. The calamari was a stir fried calamari it is not deep fried with calamari sauce on the side the sauce was delicious and it was on Fresh side. If you don't like the chewy texture this is probably not a dish for you but I like it. Surprisingly, the Deep fried pork dumplings was the most delicious. It was amazing because the pork dumplings were freshly made and they came out beautifully. Personally, I wouldn't mind coming here just to eat the appetizers. The dessert menu was typically commercial. Their ice cream selection was from Christina's in Cambridge. I was supposed to give me two scoops but whoever is in the kitchen was clearly lazy or couldn't find the scooper so I had rough shavings of red bean ice cream. read more

I don't think I've ever dined in here but we get take out here every few months. They have excellent, excellent sushi. It's made well with prime ingredients and tastes absolutely delicious. The price is very reasonable- great value. I have to stay, there spider roll is amazing. They are consistently good. As for take out time, when they tell you 30 minutes, they really mean 30 minutes. Some of you people are absolutely crazy. You've been going for 5 years then have one bad experience and give a 1-star review? Outta here with that. This place is a very good local sushi place with solid rolls and good quality food. We usually get takeout and it's always good, better than most "cheap" sushi places nearby. I recommend the lettuce wraps, avocado salad, and really any of the rolls per your choosing - they're all pretty solid. read more
