If you live in Amherst, or even Northampton, and you want pho, you come to Miss Saigon. That's just the way it is. I believe that pho should be served quickly, it should be served hot, and it should be affordable. Miss Saigon hits these three points well. You can tell how much they prioritize efficiency by ordering in numbers as opposed to the traditional names, and the way they stack the bowls when serving four different bowls to each table. It's very hard to get pho wrong, but even harder to make it exceptionally good. Miss Saigon is not one of those cases where the Pho is exceptional. However I will say that for the speed and price for which I get a decent bowl, it is definitely worth a positive rating. The atmosphere is busy. Always. Expect to be standing outside or their tiny foyer for a few minutes until they turnover a table. It tends to be quick, but in the cold winter it could be difficult. Despite their throughput of clientele, they are still able to keep it decently clean. If you're looking for the Amherst experience, you have to come here. Miss Saigon hit the spot this rainy Saturday when the bf and I were looking for a place to eat. Huge servings of pho with tons of fresh, crunchy beansprouts, a huge stalk of basil, and lime? Yes, please. I actually ordered the bun thit ($8.95) which was packed full of noodles, veggies and delicious bbq pork. Granted, I don't know all that much about Vietnamese food and yeah, prices could be cheaper but this place left the bf and me full and happy. The food was flavorful, fresh and there was plenty of it. So me and my boyfriend came into this restaurant, thinking that we would have some good pho and tea to help with a sore throats. We started off with the spring rolls and the ginger tea, which was a good seven out of 10. The moment we got our bowls of my boyfriend immediately noticed a pungent odor. I was trying to be as nice as possible during all of this, but this food actually smelled like a wet dog and I totally understand if that is the cultural smell, but me and my boyfriend could not even eat the food. As I started to mess around with it to see what the meat look like it looked like it was either old or the veins were still in it and as I continue to look, I found a huge piece of fat, probably the size of a rock. After that I we I mediately knew that something was wrong and we pretty much let the server know that we didn't wanna eat this and they said that pretty much because one of us touched it that we had to pay for the one that was touched, even though we didn't even eat both of them. They said it was a cultural reasoning I guess which I didn't really understand but we were nice enough to just not care and pay for the bill but personally, I think anyone who would've smelled it would think it also smells like dog. I really enjoyed my experience at Miss Saigon but would order takeout next time instead of dining in. Food & Beverage: I ordered the Spicy Basil Fried Rice - the portion was huge for the price so I had leftovers (that were just as good reheated) and were given to me in a "Chinese Takeout box and small paper bag. It was filling and flavorful with the perfect amount of spice! Delicious! Service: My server was attentive and highly capable but not exceptionally friendly. She consistently refilled beverages and kept a watchful eye on our table. I would have liked if she verbally checked in more. The food came out quickly and correctly and she was very accommodating in splitting our check many ways. Servicescape: This is the only reason Miss Saigon lost one star in my rating. The place was very small and I felt like I was in the way a lot of the time. The entryway is narrow and when you walk in you are not sure where to go. There are lots of booths which is great and the décor was okay but there were too many things out of place (cleaning supplies and receipts on countertops) so the small space felt even smaller with the clutter. For parking, I had to pay in the back entrance of Miss Saigon restaurant with coins, cost per hour changes so need to look at the sign. Most people get pho here--if you're into pho, this should be your go-to place. I'm more of a rice person myself, and I usually get the Miss Saigon fried rice, which is like a more delicious version of regular fried rice with beef, chicken, shrimp, egg, scallops, squid, and a bunch of veggies. It's like if you can't decide what you're in the mood for, they just put a little of everything in some delicious rice and serve you an enormous portion of it and it's the best thing you've ever eaten, and there's so much of it that you'll eat leftovers for two more days and when those two days are up you'll go back and order more. Vietnamese Pad Thai with Thai basil is excellent. Spring rolls are great. I've loved everything I've ever eaten here, though to be fair I usually stick with my tried-and-true rice. I brought my mom here once and she couldn't find what she wanted on the menu, and the server and kitchen were extremely accommodating in making substitutions and finding something that would work for her. Considering my Vietnamese background, and the lack of local Vietnamese cuisine other than Miss Saigon, I find myself frequenting this place three, or even four times a week. No lie. Even if there were other Vietnamese options, Miss Saigon is wonderful, and I'm sure I'd be here just as often. Here's the things I've tried from their extensive menu: Spicy crab rangoons - These are really delicious (and can also be ordered in the non-spicy variety) and come out piping hot. The best part is the sweet dipping sauce that comes with it. Shrimp bread (?) - I forget what this is listed as on the menu, but basically it's about four chunks of french bread topped with deep fried shrimp paste. Pretty tasty, but I was expecting a couple more pieces considering the price. Pho (#30) - Growing up, I'd always been a little squeamish over the tripe and flank and whatnot that traditionally gets thrown into pho. Luckily, this pho option has only rare beef, which is delicious, but if you're into all the other beef parts, they have plenty of options (they also have chicken and seafood). The pho comes with lots of the regular pho vegetables, and is a sizeable portion. Hot, tasty, always satisfying. Bun bo (Middle Vietnam) - Pretty good, although I remember this dish being a lot richer when prepared by my mum...That's to be expected, I guess. Still satisfying - the broth is nice and spicy. Banh mi - A MUST. Less than 4 bucks for a sandwich stuffed generously with assorted meats and vegetables, and all bundled up in a crispy baguette! Seriously, to die for. Unfortunately, they don't serve these when on weekend dinners when they're particularly busy. Vietnamese pad thai - The best in Amherst, hands down. Mixed in with the noodles are assorted vegetables, chicken, and a few pieces of grilled shrimp. Seasoned to perfection, a pretty huge portion, what more could you ask? Tom yum soup - You must try this with coconut milk. It will change your life. The perfect lunch is a bowl of this with a banh mi...bliss! Fried plantains - Meh, I've had better, but fried plaintains are always good regardless. Bottom line: If you're anywhere in the Amherst area and in need of a delicious and satisfying meal, Miss Saigon is your place. read more

This is the only Vietnamese place around amherst and even so, I dread going here. Nothing personal, just doesn't suit my taste buds. Can't really expect a lot from here compared to Boston or Worcester. But a lot of college students go here (because there is no where else). I never get the pho, just because I think it's a little bland and I don't really like beef they put in. When I go, I usually get middle Vietnam or vermicelli. Middle Vietnam is also known as bun bo hue which is a beef soup. I guess it's satisfying for being in Amherst but nothing too special about it. Vermicelli is also average as well. 2/5 stars because the food to me is below average in general but I guess good for Amherst if that makes sense. It's also a hassle to get the staffs attention sometimes. Definitely over priced though. I can def say that I will not be missing this place when I graduate. read more

I'm a resident of Amherst, have been to Miss Saigon probably about eight times in the four years I've lived here. The food is GREAT!! A/A+...rarely a complaint about the quality of food. HOWEVER, their customer service, set up and general on floor management is AWFUL! LITERALLY every time I've gone I've had a horrible frustrating experience. From the outside looking in they seemingly have no seating/serving system whatsoever. They appear to be lacking any on-floor management. Waiters don't seem to have sections, and are forced to take orders on a first come first serve basis. The staff is constantly bouncing all over the place, but rarely tending to the actual needs of the customers. They neglect the customers' needs/their tables because they're too busy zipping all over the place trying to do the job of a manager and/or host, and busing. The waiting staff should be focusing on serving, not managing seats, service cues, and cleaning. As a result of this lack of defined roles of the staff, when the place is packed which it often is, it is CHAOS; the waiting staff cannot keep track of the cue. And it results in customers left and right visibly getting pissed off and frustrated (Excuse me, we were here 1st, why are you taking an order for an 8 ppl party that came in after us, when we only have two ppl?!!) ...it is also nearly impossible to flag yr server down for the check/take the $...I recommend that you ask for the check as soon as you order! As a result of being overwhelmed by an unorganized system and no on site floor manager (it seems), the waiting staff's customer service suffers. I found it hard to get yr server's attention for anything and they seem to avoid eye contact as personal strategies for dealing with a bad situation. Whether it is a result of them being overwhelmed, trying to focus within the chaos or they're just just unable to gauge the solution to a bad management problem. The staff seems a bit embarrassed at times, maybe they know it's a sh*t show? I also once ordered out a Bahn Mi on a weekday around 2 pm, thinking I could avoid the chaos of the bad on-the-floor issues of the restaurant. They told me 20 min, when I arrived, there were 3 ppl in the place, and I had to wait an additional 30 min beyond the 20 min they stated, that's 50 min for a sandwich. One staff member repeatedly kept saying "Sorry, it should be coming out soon" after the 4th apology, I was all "REALLY, tho?" If it the management was better, and it filtered down to the staff and the customers weren't forced to deal with bad customer service I would probably be a regular customer and spend a vast amount of $ @ Miss Saigon, but it is a bad experience each and every time. So I go infrequently, and expect the worst, service and management wise. read more

The reviewers who didn't give Miss Saigon five stars must have gone to a different Miss Saigon. This place is the best! Their food is cheap, but only in the monetary sense. You get way more than you pay for. If you come here, come prepared to EAT. All of the food is delicious and you can get pretty much any variety of meats or vegetables with rice or noodles, or whatever you want. They are always super friendly and the service is super fast. I swear I ordered a bowl of Tom Yum soup and they went into the kitchen and immediately came back out with my soup. And on top of awesome service and awesome food, Miss Saigon is BYOB. There's not a lot going on in Amherst, except the Amherst Cinema (which is great!) and your standard college town bar scene, but it's worth coming just to go to Miss Saigon. They are very accommodating of large groups, which are pretty common there, and it can be pretty loud on an active night. You won't need a reservation, but THEY ARE NOT OPEN ON MONDAYS. read more

Considering how many times I've been to this restaurant, I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. My best friend and I frequent Miss Saigon approximately once a week for good reason. As a pescetarian (or whatever you want to call it...), I typically have trouble with pho because it's made with pork or some-other-kind-of-meat broth. Happily, Miss Saigon offers a tasty seafood-exclusive version filled to the brim with shrimp and other goodies. In addition, all soup dishes are served with a generous serving of fresh Thai basil, bean sprouts, green chilies, and another long vegetable that I can't identify. Another one of my recent favorite dishes is the do-it-yourself summer rolls (can't remember the exact name--look for it in Vietnamese specialties section or something like that). This dish comes with freshly steamed, thin rice paper rolls, a couple fish/shrimp cakes, molded rice noodle cakes, a ton of veggies, and sauce. Simply pile the ingredients onto the rice paper, roll up, and stuff into your gullet. In addition, the service is excellent--I'm not sure how people could complain. Every time my friends and I have gone to Miss Saigon, the waitress/waiter there memorizes our orders (even for a huge party of 10 people!) and flies into the kitchen since they're usually quite busy on weekends. The wait can be average to considerable, but never horrendous to the point where your stomach is talking more than you are. And the food is always worth it. Recommended dishes: - pho (might be hit-or-miss according to your tastes, but give it a shot) - summer rolls - any of the "bun" dishes: Vermicelli noodle dishes served with fish or carrot-vinegar sauce - basically anything, actually--I've never been disappointed in a dish here and I've gone at least 20 times! read more

I've been here 6 times. 3 times my Pho has been bland. Don't ask me why I keep coming back I don't even know myself. It's just that I love Pho, and it's the only place around during the semester. Favorite restaurant in Amherst. The owner is so sweet and she always helps out when needed. I love the relaxed , cozy service. The servers are usually really attentive. The food is incredible and the prices are very fair. I haven't been in a while but will always return. My favorite things to eat are the fried rolls and dumplings, chicken soup (I don't eat red meat), and the chicken sandwich. The chicken and broccoli is also delicious. Wow. I just read all of the reviews of Miss Saigon....First, I am not too smart when it comes to food. I am not much of a foodie and not a respectable enough cook for the company here, I can tell. As far as having an American palate, I will confess that I don't like to bite into tendons and/or gristle. I just thought I should be completely honest so you know who you're dealing with. Transparency and all. I didn't even realize I should be offended by the name, I just knew it wasn't getting as many folks in the door as a better name might. In any case, I have only eaten here twice. I ate here once when they first opened and that experience left me thinking I may not return. But I ate here just the other night. I don't know pho. I didn't order pho. I ordered a chicken dish of some kind, pedestrian, I know, but it KICKED ASS! My veggie spring rolls KICKED ASS! My friend's shrimp-on-sugar-cane appetizer, not so impressive to me, but he and his young son loved them. Another of us ordered something with lots of shrimp. They were succulent shrimp indeed, seasoned well, jumping right into my mouth. Our server was kind, helpful, and patient, which may have been somewhat challenging since 4/5 of the table didn't know what the hell we were doing in regards to the menu. Order the eponymous pho and get some offal in your bowl. Or order the pho tai, but unless you like your rare beef well done, be sure to ask for your beef on the side. It's my go-to food when ever I feel like my yin and yang seem out of alignment or I just want a good head clearing meal. This doesn't mean that it's spicy, it's just how I like it. If you've never had pho, you have to try it at least once. There are several types but Pho Bo is the most popular. At this restaurant, order the "Miss Saigon" and you'll experience a bowl of goodness that includes, among other things, Tendon meatballs, beef brisket, top round, tripe, and tendon. If vegan is your thing, they can help you there too. As you might have guessed, it's what I ordered for lunch today and I wasn't disappointed. Service was great and I even asked for a little extra tendon, and was quickly accommodated. And...my diet coke looked about 4oz larger than last time. I'll be back, more often now since the weather is getting cooler. I read recently a reviewer that seemed to criticize the name of the restaurant as being, "Orientalist". Just so we're clear, it's a restaurant owned by Asians, decorated in an Asian motif, and serving Asian food. What am I missing here? Should it be called Barney McFuzznuts? I don't find it offensive. Their Pho is very good - as run of the mill something like Chicken and vegetable Pho is becoming it sometimes seems. Their prices are terrific however, the ingredients unusually fresh for such a style of restaurant, and the menu very diverse. The Bahn Mi is said to be excelent and their Vermicelli dishes are numerous. The lunch Special is a great deal - the tomato Tofu soup a sure winner. I can't wait to try more of their plated dishes.
