We didn't like the food at this location as much as we did at their other locations. The restaurant was 2/3 empty, but could not be seated at a table and had to sit at the bar due to reservations. All through out the meal, the restaurant remained 2/3 empty. The shrimp and grits which I usually get didn't taste like anything and had the consistency of soup. My party of 8 enjoyed the food, ambiance and hospitality at Miss Toya's in Waugh Chapel in Gambrills, MD. They are still in their soft-opening phase. We were greeted when we walked in. We told the staff that we had a reservation, and we were seated within minutes. We ordered drinks and they were very good! One person in our party asked our waitress, Gigi to make her something sweet. Gigi returned with a pretty drink that was also delicious! She also made our lemonades by hand! Gigi was very attentive & kind! The food was visually appealing and savory. This is a much needed restaurant in this area. I would absolutely recommend Miss Toya's in Gambrills! read more

Three friends and I arrived at the restaurant at 11:30am. From the outside, the restaurant looked closed with the shades drawn and two big locks hanging on the handles. Through the doors, we could see lights on inside but no diners or workers were visible. One of us pulled on the door and it opened. We went in and there was no one in the restaurant. Speaking out loud, we asked each other, "are they open; what time do they open". At about that time, a worker came from the closed doors in the back and started walking toward us. I said "Good morning" and got no response. As the worker got closer to me, I said it again; again no response. The worker came to the reception desk and asked if it was 4 of us. I said yes and she gathered the menus and took us to the nearest table and told us that our server would be with us in a moment. The worker seemed irritated that we were there. We were the first guests for the day although the restaurant opened at 11:00am. A server did come to the table and introduced herself, asked what we wanted to drink and left to fill that order. First impression: The restaurant by its appearance is unremarkable although it is clean and new. The colors are black and white and the workers dress in black. The lightning at 11:30 am is low and makes the restaurant look closed. A sign designating the location of the restrooms is missing. (The restrooms were clean and neat) While we were seated, a worker came to place the floor mat beside the door long after the restaurant had been opened for business. I think a sign or some notice out front that the restaurant "is open" would be helpful. Second impression: The workers need further training. No one said, "Welcome to Ms. Toyas's restaurant" or gave recommendations of dishes that might appeal to us. Our server did not tell us anything about the food. I asked for a salad without croutons. The server told me croutons did not come with the salad and I told her they were included with the ingredients listed for the salad on the menu. She then indicated that they once were included but no longer were. When my friend's salad came (the same as I had ordered), hers had croutons sitting on top of the salad. Third impression: We ordered two Crispy Chicken House salads, one Crispy Chicken House Salad with No chicken, 1 Seafood Shrimp basket and one Honey Caribbean Salmon salad. The Chicken salads came with Champagne Vinaigrette salad dressing per the menu . The server brought out some kind of ranch dressing. We had to ask for the Vinaigrette dressing for our salads. The salad greens were fresh and plentiful and the fries were hot. There was no offer of ketchup and none was on the table. The food was brought to the table by hand by the servers. Where are the trays so that food can be placed on them to bring to the table? Two of us were visiting the restaurant for the second time. During that first visit, my friend ordered the stuffed shrimp that had a pinch of crab meat in the stuffing and was encased in a thick breading. My friend described it as, "The worst ever!" The server that day was superb! On this visit we waited quite a while for the server to bring our check. We were not offered dessert or asked if we wanted anything to drink other than the water we initially ordered. Please note that during our time there, five people came into the restaurant, two in one party and three in the second party. The restaurant was not busy! We finally were given the check with the "small party gratuity of 15% "included. Again, no one thanked us for coming when we left. Would I recommend Ms. Toya's restaurant? Based on this experience, I would not recommend it and my friends and I will not be going back. read more

7/27/25 visit: Just ridiculous! I spent $90 and it wasn't money well spent ! Keep in mind our go to place is Eggspectation for brunch when I'm out this way but I was willing to support a Soul Food joint! I decided to make a reservation. I expected it to be packed, but wasn't too full. I noticed most of the things appeared different than some of the other restaurants. The ambiance was a little off but nothing major. The first disappointment was when I went yo the bathroom . It was decent for the most part but the soap dispenser was broke. The filler was sitting beside the dispenser. I found myself trying to struggle to get soap! I wondered if the workers worked as hard as me..ijs...the paper towel dispenser had a wave your hand sign but nothing came out of there either. I finally came out with soaking wet hands and let my waitress know. Second, was the fact that I cannot have sugar and wanted unsweetened tea just to learn they don't sell it! Who doesn't serve unsweet tea as an option especially if there's sweetened ? No refills on lemonade that my son ordered which was served in a typical Mason Glass. A few sips and my son was asking for more! Our waitress seemed a bit young (young lady with mini bun hair style) and unaware of good hospitality. She was often unclear of answers to questions about menu items, and instead gave any answer as she was more worried about holding conversation with other staff than being attentive to our table. She kept forgetting things and brought the wrong salad and somehow turned it around on how it was in the system. At some point I just started to ignore her, and just took it out of her tip! Also, I was excited about the strawberry crunch French toast for my son, which is on the menu, but wasn't being served in the restaurant at all. Our waitress said "you won't crunch on anything but it's good." ...umm What?!?(eye-roll) I can only compare what we received to a fast food restaurant. The bread for the French Toast was so small and they had a nerve to top it with strawberry compote which was runny. l. No crunch topping at all! No fresh fruit! My son also ordered the macaroni and cheese that appeared as if they reheated up leftovers from days ago and tried to cover it up by putting fresh cheese on top. It was stiff and jelled together from the middle down. The home fries were dried up in a small bowl which wasn't filled to the top. They definitely didn't seem fresh cut! Ok, so I ordered a catfish sandwich that was breaded with egg wash or something that took away from the flavor of the catfish itself. Why? Cornmeal is key right? The breading was too hard almost in a shell and I felt like I was eating a pork chop or something. Way over seasoned! I was so irritated because how can you get some of these things wrong in a soul food restaurant? Smh! Now the honey hot wings we ordered as appetizers were good. No complaints there, but for the price of this food I expected fresh everything to include the fruit on the dern French Toast! I also ordered seafood Mac, which actually seemed as though they tried to hide that same cold Mac with seafood. I found myself crunching on shells so I just left it go! I'm sorry but I will be going back to my original spot around the corner at Eggspectation. I really wanted to support this place, but it seems once again someone didn't get it right when it comes to soul food. I will pay the price for fresh authentic food! However there's a level of irritation when you leave hungry and pay a high price for underwhelming food! One suggestion is to stop having so many people there to work at one time. Many workers stood around with nothing to do so they chit chatted. I'm not sure if this is a family business but it definitely gave "too comfortable at work"! Many were gathered eating and talking in front of the bar with who appeared to be the manager. Put that money back into the quality and portions of the food. I could have saved money by just going to someplace like IHOP with what I saw on my son's plate. No Way! No need for pictures because other people have already put them out there. Be consistent! If you serve macaroni in a skillet pan in-one place, don't give me cold macaroni in a small white bowl here. Makes all the difference. Last, have the menu items available, or take them off! Disappointing! Didn't even bother taking leftovers home! Save your coins folks!! Uggggg! read more

We had a reservation of 8 today at Miss Toya's in Waugh Chapel, and it was the best experience ever. GiGi was our Waitress and she was So Knowledgeable and very Informative. She kept us aware of what was happening with the soft opening and the shortage of employees. But with only 3 people the service was tremendous. I would recommend anyone go and please be sure to ask for GiGi. My entire Party took home food because it was so filling!!!!!
