I noticed it's very difficult to find authentic Jamaican food in the DMV /Maryland. I've heard so many transplants with the same feedback. I decided to try this restaurant and honestly What a disappointment. I ordered 2 entrees, extra sides and an appetizer. Our waitress, Ivie F brought 12 pieces of wings when we ordered when we only ordered 6 as per the menu. Once we brought it to her attention she said sternly "well I heard 12" and walked away. What kind of service is this? I ordered the following menu items: Oxtails- 1out of 5 very watered down, sauce extremely dark and flavorless Jerk wings- 2 out of 5 Callaloo- 4 out of 5 very hard to find vegetable here in the US. This was very well prepared String beans -3 out of 5 Fish- 3 out of 5 nice presentation but overcooked/ dry Festival- 2 out of 5 Lemon drop- 3 out of 5 The food didn't taste authentic nor traditional. The flavors felt watered down, too much sauce or just plain salty. My husband (originally from Jamaica) who owns a Jamaican restaurant in another state figured he would help a fellow Jamaican out by giving some tips. The manager explained that the people in Maryland like it this way but he wouldn't cook it like this at home! Lol I've never heard such a response as a Caribbean restaurant you should take pride in authenticity always. I highly doubt with this experience I will be back.

Went back for a second visit. This time, I tried the rum punch. It has the hard to find Wray and nephew over proof rum. OMG, the best rum punch I ever had. The owner "Shawn" stopped by to chat. The waitress "Britney" was also lovely. This is our new spot . My friend loved it too! The restaurant is great! I hope they stay in Bowie. Ambiance is friendly and welcoming:

This being in the old Pizza Hut always intrigued me. I finally got the chance recently to try their food. The inside was very dark and to me still gave the feel of an old Pizza Hut maybe that's just 90's kids nostalgia in me. The food was okay. I ordered the oxtail combos with curry chicken. I ordered my oxtail spicy and all they did was add scotch bonnet peppers so the flavor ain't really changed or was hot unless you had a pepper in a bite. For a Jamaican spot the portion size was kind of small. All in all to me this place was just solid, it's something about a Caribbean sit down restaurant that kind of just lack soul for me.

I have been wanting to try Shantoo for months. I was on the fence between giving them a 4 or a 3. I chose a 4 for the service. Our waitress was new but was very friendly and attentive and funny. I would also give a 4 for cleanliness, ambience, and timeliness. We came for lunch and were the first ones there. Everything came out quickly and hot. They deserve a 3 for price! The $10 lunch special was actually $16. Please fix your menu OR honor the price you state on your menu. I got oxtails to go and they charged $36 for 3 small plantains, some rice and peas, and 5 oxtails. Are you serious!!! Either give me more food or drop your price accordingly. In terms of taste, I give the stew chicken, the beef patty, sorell, and coco bread a 3, the jerk chicken a 3.5, the oxtails are a 4, the rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains are all a 4. They were good just not enough of them. Overall this place has great potential but needs to improve the flavor of some dishes and match their prices to the quality and portions of their food to be a 5 in my book.

Had dinner on a Friday evening. Arrived about 7 PM. There was plenty of parking. I was surprised to see that for Friday evening. The restaurant was only about 30% full. That is a telltale sign in itself. The bar got progressively more busy as the night went on. The best part was our waitress. I wish I had gotten her name. It looked like she was also the bartender. She was attentive. She checked in on us. She got us everything in a timely manner. Outside of that, everything was just kind of average. Maybe I don't go out enough but &14 for a cocktail for me felt like a lot. Our food was good. Just good. Nothing was awful. Although, the mild escovitch sauce was VERY vinegar forward. They give you cocoa bread as a starter. It was good, but it would've been better if it was fresher or made in house. Overall, it was a decent meal. There was nothing that was so amazing that I plan to go back again.

This place is located in a old Pizza Hut. Stopped by after leaving a winery and wanted to grab some food to go. The jerk wings and beef patty were really good. I was surprised that this place has a full bar. I definitely plan to come back and sit down and enjoy those vibes. Service was actually very good. I know there's this ongoing joke that if you go to a Jamaican or Caribbean spot and the service is good, then the food probably isn't, or vice versa. The service here was good here and the food was good.

This space is what used to be a Pizza Hut. The vibe is easy and the music is relaxing and not too loud. There's a nice sized bar in the middle of the restaurant space and patrons are having lively conversations. I ordered an oxtail plate for my wife to enjoy and she was very pleased with the oxtail, plantains and steamed cabbage. I must confess that I forgot to order peas and rice with this dish. So to compensate, I made rice at home to supplement this arrangement. The chef came from the kitchen to make sure it was my order that he was preparing and it was nice gesture for a staff member to check the order and meet the patron that ordered it. I'll be sure to sit in next time to take in the vibes and their other menu items as well.

    $38.60 for Oxtail & Bean

While I think the food is tastes okay, the portions are disproportionately smaller and not worth the overall cost of the food. I was craving Caribbean food and thought to give this place a try but I doubt I'll do that again. I spent over $170 on a few items and when I received it, the food was leaking from containers into the bag, I looked at the portions and thought where's the rest. The most disappointing was ordering 2 entrees of oxtail and beans and paying $39.60 for each one and receiving a container that looked like this. Maybe there were 3-4 pieces of oxtail, I don't even see many beans, I felt like I was swindled out of my money. I love eating from community places but these costs don't represent true value of the food.

    Coco Bread (Complimentary) with meal
    Darlene P.

I tried to give this establishment another try, however it was not good at all. First let's say the wait time for food is horrible, and especially for what we ordered. The coco bread was brought out for starters, it had a weird taste, almost as if refrigerated and warmed up, and very crumbly. The whiting was ok, but better the first time I had it, this time it was just ok. Those French fries.. they don't need to serve no more fries.. looked and tastes old. The cabbage was overly saturated with parsley... and the rice and peas were dry. The highlight of the night was the jerk chicken. Asked For bone in white meat... was served chicken tenders with jerk sauce.. and told they don't have bone in white meat!!!??? Why ask if you want bone in or bone out white meat? And it was dryyyyyyy, had to get extra sauce just to eat it. Overall, I don't know, it's just not for me..

    Snapper Whole

Food is delicious! The snapper chef kiss! I had some hickory BBQ smoke wings. They are so good! Must try. 4 stars only because the service is a hit or miss. I've been to this restaurant about 5 times and each time is a different experience. The first time I came the owner came out and was greeting everyone ( which set the tone for my expectations) the last time I came. We sat there for almost an hr in a half with not even appetizer had arrived. But all in all the food has never disappointed. It's been times I come just for the wings and the owner was the only one in the back cooking. I commend the owner. He's a hard working man with a beautiful spirit. Please check this place out. Your stomach will be very happy with you.

    Curried Goat Meal

Let's talk about the place where you can go for a meal that taste like grandma is in the kitchen! Delicioso!! That's the word for every bite of food I ate. The thick richness of the curry goat to the home made callaloo!!! I raised my hands in praise for every bite that made me feel like I was back in the islands. Sitting in our booth with a smooth Caribbean sound in the background....Thanks so much Shantoo! What a pleasure to share your food with me & my friends!!

    Rum punch

I took a friend there today. Her first time, my 4th. The food was amazing. The rum punch......no joke. You are easily transported to Jamaica. I had the brown stew beef, rice and peas, and cabbage. Shawn, the owner was welcoming, sat and talked with us. It feels like family here.

Their jerk chicken, oxtails, curry and oxtail pasta are ON POINT! I've been a weekly regular at this restaurant for about 3 months now and to date, I haven't had a disappointing meal. Plantains are always sweet, the rice & peas perfectly cooked, and the dumplings & fried dough amazing. Guess you can see I like this place. The customer service is good and trust I always have questions and they keep the interior clean. The house made juices/drinks are a bit too sweet for my taste but the food is worth every penny, and the portions are hardy enough for 2 people.

I joined a group of about 8 friends for D&G's karaoke night on a Friday from 6-9pm…read more The karaoke itself was fun, even if there were just a few groups of tables participating. There is a small tv on one half of the restaurant that displayed lyrics while performers and the karaoke set up stood close to the entrance. The space felt a little small for a large karaoke and speaker set up but we made it work. The energy amongst the crowd (4-5 tables worth of people) was fun, and that's what matters most. After the karaoke, the hostess played about 30 mins of Caribbean jams which was fun too. During the event we had plenty to eat and drink. I had 3 rum punches (2 of which were during the happy hour window for $7) - they were not made to order, but rather came from a batch container. They were still pretty good and pretty strong but I would've preferred a freshly made drink. My girlfriend got a margarita to start (which wasn't that good) then switched to the rum punches. The bar was also low on glassware - so we often got drinks repoured into glasses we had just finished. Don't think the bar was prepared for a larger group that night. The food was solid, but not great. I had the regular fried wings and the jerk wings, for $9 during happy hour. Both wings were good, and I appreciate that the jerk wasn't too spicy. Strangely, I received 7 fried wings in one order and 5 jerk wings in the other order. My friend, who also ordered jerk wings, only got 4 wings in his order. Some consistency in order size would be better. On our way out, we ordered a couple patties (beef and curry chicken) and a curry chicken dinner with rice n peas and plantains. Theses choices were great! Wish I had ordered one more patty. The staff's friendliness and liveliness was the best part. The bartender was very friendly and did her best to manage the whole restaurant's drinks solo. The karaoke hostess had great energy. Even the kitchen staff and folks managing food orders were kind and pleasant. I could tell many of the guests were regulars; everyone seems very comfortable interacting with staff. If I'm in the area again, I'd totally be okay with stopping by for another rum punch and beef patty.

If Chipotle had a soulful, culturally rich cousin... it would be Spice Black. Period…read more I've been seeing this place all over social media, so when I found myself in the area, I had to see what the hype was about. First off, parking is easy. It's in a shopping center, so nothing stressful there, and the restaurant itself is easy to spot. Walking in, the first thing I noticed was how clean, polished, and classy everything looked. Even though it was busy, it didn't feel chaotic. The staff immediately greeted me and asked if it was my first time which I appreciated. They didn't just rush me through the line; they actually took time to explain the menu, how the bowls are built, and offered samples. That alone made the experience feel welcoming and intentional. Now let's get into the FOOD. Everything looked fresh. They have about four rice options (which is already a win), and I went with the pineapple coconut rice. For my protein, I chose grilled chicken, but they also offer shrimp, salmon, and even a mushroom option for vegetarians and honestly, the mushrooms looked so good I almost switched. For my added sides, I kept it simple because I really wanted to taste everything. Collard greens and sweet potatoes. But they also had plantains, and okra....real deal soul food options. Then you get into the fresh toppings. Slaws, carrots, pickled veggies. I kept it light. I finished my bowl with collard green pesto (which intrigued me, and I'm glad I tried it) and added an étouffée sauce over my rice... and listen!!!!! That combo? Chef's kiss. I grabbed a tropical punch juice, and just like everything else, it tasted fresh and well-made. Let me say this clearly: the food is a 10/10. If you're someone who will give Chipotle chance after chance, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to try Spice Black. 10/10. Worth your money. Worth the hype. Worth the experience.

The restaurant is nicely decorated with vibrant colors and very clean. The service is friendly and welcoming. The food was okay. Not bad and just good in my opinion. Its not rave worthy but its still good. I would come back and try other options. This is still a good healthier option oppose to the many of terrible choices we have to choose from, this beats most unhealthy fast foods restaurants. For that reason I would return to try other food options. If you like chickpeas then this is your meal, Im not so it threw off the salad to me. I would have preferred chicken. Honestly, everything came together nicely as one salad, nothing was over powering. I'm just not a fan of chickpeas. They do have an option for shrimp but dont eat bottom feeders so that wasn't an option for me. My tastebuds are much different from yours so I would still give it a try. You might like it a little more than me. Its still a fairly good meal.

Everything on that plate hit. No complaints about the food whatsoever. The space itself is small, clean, and minimally decorated. Nothing fancy, but very well-kept, and I appreciate that. Service was good. The owner personally took care of me and accommodated my request to swap out the rice for extra cabbage with no issue. I always appreciate when owners are hands-on and attentive. At heart, I'm a man that truly enjoy most Caribbean dishes ( oxtails, goat, curry/jerk chicken,…read moreroti, etc ) So, I set out on a quest to give a new Caribbean cuisine restaurant a shot at winning me over. That's when I bumped into Caribbean Dish... The name got me, yes it's basic, but the title was exactly what I was looking for. The restaurant is in a small unassuming parking lot... if you don't know it's there, you probably will miss it ( so glad I didn't !! ) The minute I walked in, I felt authentic family vibes ( something I look for when choosing my Caribbean locations ) The service was very friendly, and they cleared everything up when I wasn't sure if my particular craving could be fulfilled ( the combo I desired wasn't on their daily menu ) My sights were set on the oxtail and curry goat combo ( of course with rice & peas and veggies ! ) And when I say the goat was tender, and seasoned to perfection... while the oxtails had that juicy meatiness that will for sure keep me coming back. The rice & peas were cooked just right ( texture was on point ) and the veggies still had that freshness that brought everything else together. I love my Caribbean dishes saucy and not dry ( they get two thumbs up in that department ! ) Family vibes, cheerful greeting, and amazing food.... Caribbean Dish you just locked yourself in a loyal customer !!!!! Give them a shot and I can almost guarantee you won't be disappointed !!!

I did the smothered porkchops - WOW, best that I have had - really enjoyed the main entrée and my sides (greens, black-eye peas). Both meals came with cornbread (another option was a biscuit). I have to say the food, the Staff and the establishment has been my best taste of southern cooking in the DMV area. I ordered chicken wings (6) to go for wife & I to enjoy later. Definitely worth a visit, we will be back - The smothered chops are calling me already. Lunch for two with a take home order of wings & 2 deserts plus tip was around $100.

The fish (catfish and croaker) always tastes like it's been fried in grease that needs changing. There's no flavor profile in the food which is weird for a soul-food restaurant. The mixed veggies were absolutely disgusting-- gave them back. I paid $65 for fried catfish with two sides, fried croaker with two sides, a cookie and two drinks---and sadly, the only thing that was sort of worth it was the cornbread, but it tastes like it has coconut in it. I hate coconut. The item that was the most flavorful for me was the black eyed peas/hoppin John (minus the big pieces of fatty meat in them).

A stand located in the lot of Chesapeake Seafood, MadFlava serves up jerk chicken, jerk pork chops,…read moreribs, and various house made slaws. You can usually find them grilling up on Saturdays! We ordered the 1/4 jerk (dark) chicken (juicy and the skin came off easily), jerk pork chop (slightly tough and better with the jerk sauce), 1/2 a slab of ribs (tender and smoky), a side of the jalapeño cole slaw (it was crunchy and refreshing, and I liked the sliced jalapenos), and the Jamaican rice and peas (this was comforting). There were also some samplings of jerk fish that was being passed out, and I just wished we got this instead! The fish was super flaky and yummy! The jerk seasoning is all homemade, and it's definitely flavorful, with a great spicy kick! Apparently, their seasonings/marinades are also sold, so if you want to kick up your meats and such, they're available! The husband-and-wife team are super friendly and welcoming. They are currently located in the Chesapeake Seafood parking lot on Fridays and Saturdays. +jerk fish! +Jamaican rice and peas +housemade/homemade jerk seasoning blend +friendly owners +located in the Chesapeake Seafood parking lot on Fri & Sat
