The staff was incredibly nice and welcoming when I arrived at the register to order. Although I ordered to-go, I was still impressed by receiving my food within 5 minutes. I ordered a salad while my friend ordered about 3 separate orders of pulled pork and chicken. I especially liked how they show you the food before you take it home. This helps avoid any mistakes they may have made. Great pulled pork sandwich (NC style) and baked beans! At the table, you have your choice of six different bar-b-que sauces from Texas Twang to Tupelo Honey Heat. My boys particularly loved their selection of cane sugar sodas: Boylans, Big Red, Frosty Blue Cream and more. It was pretty full at lunch time on a Friday, but we still got a nice big booth. Wood walls, tables, chairs and benches with an entirely not-fancy concrete floor; just what a BBQ place should be. The cop, firefighter, and military pictures and patches were a welcome bonus. It smelled great walking in, and the food was as good as the smell. Everyone was friendly, they made you feel welcome; and to me that is rarer than good food, and one of the things that makes a restaurant a standout. Service: 4 stars. Food: 2 stars. I went to the Mission BBQ in Glen Burnie and always had decent food. First time going here last night and it was mediocre at best. I really liked the ambiance of the place, full of pictures of firefighters, military, policemen and other respectable figures. The environment was great. So after church, about 18 of us decided to come here. As we came here, there were about 2 picnic tables and 1 booth for us, however, we still needed another table. About 6 of us were still standing till some lovely people decided to let us have their table. Just enough space for all of us 18 Asian filled hungry mob. How nice of them! Luckily, they were leaving so we didn't feel too bad for taking their space. The majority of our group went up to order while the rest of us stayed to keep the tables occupied. When the majority sat down with their food, the rest of us went up to order. I ordered the 3 meat sampler which consists of Moist Brisket, Pulled Pork and Jalapeño Sausage with a side of Mac N Cheese and Fries and a Blue colored soda which turned out to be Cream Soda.... I looked at the color of the soda and assumed it was Blueberry or Tropical Fruit Punch or something. After having a sip, I was not happy. LOL. I like Cream Soda, just didn't feel like having any last night. I got my order and sat down and my favorite sauce there was the Smokey Mountain. They had like 6 different sauces plus this white Alabama sauce and vinegar. The Moist Brisket (Fatty Brisket) was good. The fat on it really helped with the tenderness and flavor of the brisket. Add some sauce and it's on point. However just about everything else was mediocre or worse. The Pulled Pork's texture felt like tree bark, was very dry and stringy. Even with the copious amounts of sauce, I still had to chase it down with the Cream Soda. The Sausage casing was so hard to penetrate that I had to use my hands to rip it off from my teeth. The taste was pretty good but I wasn't planning to use my bare hands in taking it off. They don't have the little hand cleaning wipes like Famous Daves does. Or at least, I didn't see any on any of our 4 tables. The cornbread was tasty but dry. Their fries were pretty good but it's hard to mess up fries. Some of our group was "raving" about the Mac N Cheese and when I tried it, I was thinking to myself if those people should have any credibility when it comes to food because the Mac N Cheese tasted like Mac N Cheese. What I DID like about it was the crust of the Mac N Cheese but flavor wise, it wasn't BAM to me ya know? What I really didn't like was, with all the sauce I put on to balance out the dryness of the food, started to mesh together and have the same taste after taking each bite. No matter what food I had, it tasted the same. The consistency of the sauce wasn't a solution to the dryness of the food. There was nothing to save the food. Like I said before, their brisket is worth getting and the fries were pretty good. If you like Cream Soda with your BBQ then get the blue colored glass bottle. Their service was great. When I was waiting in line, a lovely woman approached me and asked what I wanted. I asked her what she would recommend to a person that's hungry. She recommended the meat sampler then she took my order and I got my food in like 1-2 minutes. As time went by and people started to empty out their plates, some guys would come up and take our plates away. I love what they do for those who serve in the military and those who are fire fighters, policemen and other commendable persons. They also don't have any freezers and a lot of their food is fresh. I think this place is better than famous daves. There might not be as much variety and thats good they stick to what they know. Famous Dave's gets away from bar b que sometimes to disastrous results. While it was crowded when I went in the line moved quickly and my food was hot. I was surprised that the person who handed me my food was the owner of this location. He was so helpful and walked me through the many sauces they offered. I had the sampler with meatloaf jalapeño cheddar sausage and the brisket. Excellent BBQ! I've eaten great BBQ in Georgia, North Carolina, Nebraska and in other states. Mission BBQ makes me forget all about the others. (Note: one of the BBQ places in Georgia has even won on Pitmasters so I've eaten really good BBQ). The brisket is definitely my favorite. I've had all the other meat offerings except the chicken. The flavor of the perfectly smoked brisket is unparalleled at any smoke house I've been too. I have tried it with no sauce or with a dash of each of the offerings. I like it standing on its own, but the Smoky sauce is da** good when lightly added. Second place goes to the jalapeño and cheese sausage. Juicy and delicious. I recommend trying the smoked turkey. It really is great, but I've got to stick with the brisket. I've tried the sides and have not been disappointed at all. The cole slaw added to the brisket in small portions really adds to the experience. For dessert I have to say the banana pudding will make you slap your mama for not making it this good. Not at all dried out like the other BBQ competitor in the area. The mac n cheese and coleslaw sides are good as well. Of all the sauces, I like the Georgia mustard and the Old Bay ones the best. The Georgia mustard is zesty and tangy with a bit of sweetness. The Old Bay has that distinctive salty flavor. The Baja sauce has a lot of smoke and chipotle flavors. The Kansas sauce is nicely tangy with ketchup distinction. The Texas sauce has a slight heat but none had any notable scovilles. The facility is roomy with thematic decor in tribute of US service men and women and first responders. The seating is plentiful and there are outdoor tables as well. They are still working out new opening pains. The intake is slow with only 2 registers. They really need to add two more. I'm drooling as I'm eating this food. It's so good! I got the 2 meat sampler XXL which means it comes with 2 sides and a drink. I got the lean brisket and pulled pork with baked beans and potato salad. It also comes with corn bread. The 2 meat sampler alone is $8.99, the XXL add on is $4 which brought my total to $13 and change. At first I thought that was a little steep for a meal in an order and wait establishment, but when I started eating I quickly realized I had enough food for 2 meals. Everything was good! The potato salad was the best I've had at any restaurant, ever. The baked beans were good and so was the brisket and pulled pork. The corn bread had good flavor but I was not a fan of the stiff kernels of corn inside of it. The BBQ sauce selections left something to be desired for me though. I ended up mixing them to try and create something worthy of the meat. I tried the moist brisket prior to ordering and it was very fatty (maybe it was just the piece I got, idk) so as a result I went with the lean. It has virtually no fat. Had our first experience at Mission BBQ. Definitely one of the better BBQ chains in MD (tons better than Famous - by who's standard - Daves or Red, Hot, and Blue). The customer service here is top notch! Being our first time, a nice gentleman behind the counter gave us some background information on how they operate, the General Manager came by to make sure we were satisfied, and someone came by with samples of pulled pork. Dinner highlights: - Pulled pork is quite good, especially with BBQ sauce (6 bbq and Carolina vinager sauces to choose from, Mephis Belle favorite of the one's I tried) -Chicken (sort of on the bone) - completely just fell off the bone, very moist and tasty - did not have the crunchy skin but still quite good - Cornbread - I thought it was a tad dry but my daughter enjoyed it - Green Beans - love the addition of bacon, not bad - Mac & Cheese - Yum, so bad for you but so good in taste and texture (my family only likes the stuff in the box (not my favorite), so I like to indulge in a GOOD non-chemical version on occassion when we go out) - Caramel Bread Pudding - OMG, so fantastic but really sweet - definitely recommend in small quantities but a must try if you like bread pudding Overall, very good service and food. Wow very good barbeque. it's as good as the Glen Burnie location, and the inside looks almost identical. The meat is truly well cooked and flavored. I love the turkey the most of all. it is tender, spicy and not dry at all. It's delicious by itself and even better with some of the sauces they have at the table. I recently tried the NC pulled pork sandwich, which is a North Carolina style pulled pork (i'm no bbq connoisseur, so i don't know specifically what kind of stuff is in there) with slaw on top. It was moist and flavorful. It did need a little help with some additional sauce, but nonetheless very good. The side of baked beans was delicious, though a little small for the price. I really can't say anything bad about the food I've had here or at the Glen Burnie location. Solid food and friendly staff. I do feel the portions of the sides are a bit small though, and also the corn bread is only average (not bad, but nothing great). This place is the spot for BBQ in Ellicott City. I'm from Memphis, TN and I grew up on BBQ, so I'm usually pretty aggressive with reviews of BBQ places. Mission BBQ is unique in that it does not portray a specific region in regards to its food. It has a variety of BBQ options and their sauces are on par. Only reason for 4/5 stars is that I'm skeptical of their Mississippi BBQ sauce. Again being from Memphis I visited Mississippi quit often and I have never heard of a sauce flavor for the state. I really do not like any of them, but it's not their fault. I was just missing a sweet thick BBQ sauce. I don't like mustard, I don't like vinegary. The Tupelo honey heat was the best of the six, but still had a flavor I didn't relate to. The brisket is fine without sauce. It didn't need it!! Flavorful, moist. Very good. The Mac and cheese was delicious! Creamy cheesy and thick. The beans had brisket in it. Wonderful. Good cornbread. One star is off because there was a lot of fat waste on the brisket. When I was waiting for our food, one of the workers engaged us in a conversation about Mission BBQ. I got to learn about their cooking processes (everything is slow-smoked and made in-house - even the sauces!). It was busy, and hard to find a seat, but after walking around a bit, we were able to snag a table. While waiting in line, we got to sample the jalapeno and cheese sausage. Spicy! I also got to sample the pulled chicken. It was flavorful, but dry. I ordered the two-meat market sampler of pulled pork and moist brisket with a side of mac and cheese and a drink. The mac and cheese was super cheesy. It also came with a piece of cornbread, which was delicious. The corn bread was crisp on the edges, soft on the inside, and moist from the pieces of corn baked into the bread. Both meats on my dish were tender. However, the brisket could have been more moist. The pulled pork was a great vehicle for tasting the house-made sauces (each table has a set of six different flavors that you can try). I also got to taste their famous Bay-B-Back Ribs. To be brutally honest, I didn't like the cornbread. It was oily and old tasting....sorry. BUT! It didn't even matter because I was so stuffed from my other food. I got jalapeño cheese sausage, which I thought would be a single link....there were like 5 or 6 sliced pieces on the plate. Together with some very tasty cheesey potatoes and a lemonade, it was more than I could finish. On top of that, my husband was all "try my ribs." I'm not even the biggest fan of ribs. They usually seem like a lot of gnawing for a little reward. But these were meaty and tender enough that I could use a fork (like a LADY! Lol) to scoop off big bites of meat. The variety of sauces was nice too, although the Carolina and Memphis types were by far the best, IMO. Usually I think of BBQ as coming from little mom & pop shops, but as far as chains go this is really very good, and decent value for the price. WOW. The customer service at this place is absolutely fantastic. I came here on a Monday night around 8pm to redeem my birthday sandwich. I got the brisket sandwich (moist cut). The woman who took my order was extremely nice and polite, and asked if I wanted to add any sides, offering me any sample I wanted to try. I decided on the mac and cheese, and she personally went to grab me a small cup. After ordering, she wished me a happy birthday, and within a few seconds of waiting, my meal was ready. The sandwich was very moist, albeit there were some large chunks of fat, but I gobbled them down. The mac and cheese was pretty good, but the portion was a little small. Smoked meatloaf, dry cornbread, and the green beans were a bit salty. Otherwise, this is pretty good barbecue. I like to try new stuff, and smoked meatloaf is new stuff. I would say it is OK, but I do not think I will try it again. We have had good food here typically. The pulled pork is very inconsistent, though never bad. We think there was some stray chicken in ours this time. These are minor complaints, though. I am curious about the link to military and service personnel, and I do hope that the emphasis is authentic. Everybody working here seems to enjoy their work, and that is refreshing after many experiences with disaffected wait and service staff. Ive been to the mission bbq in glen Burnie and really enjoyed it. When I heard they are opening a new location in Columbia (right in my neck of the woods) I knew I had to try it. The decor was very similar right down to the mission be truck in the parking lot. This was where chicken out use to be (right next to old navy). Food: we ordered 10 baby back ribs and jalapeño and cheddar cheese sausage. The baby back ribs were juicy but a little too heavy on the seasoning- mainly salt (-1). The jalapeño cheese sausage was top notch; nice and spicy but also had chunks of cheddar thought out- looooveeeddd it! Service: A-mazing. For a quick bbq casual restaurant they really beefed up on the customer service. We were greeted several times with free samples (while waiting in line or seated). We were approached several times ( by the head manager?) and was asked how we enjoyed the food, the service and if we needed anything. At the end of the meal, we were asked if we needed to-go boxes or if we needed our trays to be taken away.
