I've had barbecue from all over. No, seriously. Almost everywhere good BBQ is found. The Carolinas, Texas, Kentucky, St. Louis, Kansas City, Baltimore, Georgia, Virginia... pretty much everywhere except Tennessee, and I honestly don't know if they're known for BBQ anyway. So, let me say that when I think that Mission BBQ is the best in Maryland and maybe the country, I'm not just whistling Dixie! Here's what I like: before they opened, they traveled across the country trying BBQ from everywhere, comparing and contrasting, all the while perfecting their own recipes. What they have ended up with is an experience, not a simple restaurant. My favorite is usually the turkey. Everything is slow-smoked for a goodly amount of time, preserving the flavors and moisture, and enhancing the sensory experience. The turkey is no exception. Salty, spicy (not very), smoky, juicy... perfect. Not that pressed meat crap either, but full turkey breasts without filler, processing, and all that nasty nonsense. Just pure, unadulterated BBQ turkey love. I'm also a nut for a good pulled pork, and they do not disappoint. Their rub is very delicious and it works its way into every offering they put it on. The pork gets these little pieces of bark (charred outside bits of the meat) that are succulent, crispy, juicy, full of flavor, and mouth-wateringly explosive. I like the décor inside, too; nothing pretentious or assuming, yet not kitschy or trite. Lots of badges and pictures, a virtual museum to our armed forces and first responders. They are always doing benefits for the Wounded Warrior project, as well, so not only is it probably the best BBQ around, it's often for a good cause! How can you beat that? I walked in & was greeted while waiting in line by one of the managers (who complimented my "I love NY" sweater) & once I received my meal, a partner of the restaurant handed my meal, asked if it was my first time & then explained how everything was made from scratch, nothing's frozen & showed me the 6 homemade BBQ sauces. Even while walking out, the manager who greeted me, made sure I was good to go. FOOD was DELICIOUS! Hand carved turkey, homemade BBQ sauce, & sticky, goey, Mac & Cheese that comes sprinkled in breadcrumbs! I'm a Mac & Cheese critic, since its my favorite meal, and Mission BBQ aced their recipe. A real live military tank sits out front with the logo, and inside is neatly organized, set up to hold inside dining & fast to-go line ordering (without making the two collide & cause chaos). Best BBQ outside of Texas, North Carolina, and Memphis. Small portion sizes and rich prices makes this place a special occasions only. My biggest complaint is the fact that Mission BBQ is a "supposed" military friendly restaurant, but DOES NOT give a military discount to our troops. This is a big fail on their part. They have a Wounded Warrior parking spot, and military memorabilia all over the store. Come on guys, if you want to support our troops give them a 10-15% discount for them. read more

I don't know why I havent reviewed this place yet. Probably because I eat here so damn much that my hands are covered in too much brisket juice to use a computer. If you like BBQ, and what kind of American are you if you don't, then do yourself a favor and stop in. Their brisket is some of the best I've ever had, and you get the choice of either lean or moist (ALWAYS GO MOIST). Pulled pork is awesome, ribs are great and flavorful, chicken is great. I almost always get an order of the jalapeño cheddar sausage. Now the sides, mac and cheese, baked beans, cole slaw, creamed corn, all awesome, all made from scratch. Every now and then they add some seasonal sides like mashed sweet potatoes and broccoli cheese casserole (one of the best things I've ever had) for some great variety. They've been mixing it with desserts recently like bread pudding and cherry crumble. Their sauces are pretty damn good, and I usually go with the Baja Bold, which is made with habaneros and has a good kick. The Alabama White sauce is perfect with the brisket. Can't forget the drinks too, they have one of the best selections of bottled sodas that you'll find. Stuff like Big Red and Frostie Cherry Limeade. Also a decent beer selection and 2 Buck Boh's. Throw all this amazingness together, and then you factor in all the great stuff they do for the Wounded Warrior Project and local police and firefighters and you get one hell of an awesome local BBQ restaurant. I probably eat here twice a week, and it will NEVER get old. So do yourself a favor, if you think you know good BBQ, eat here and you'll know for sure that you do. read more

And then just go to work on that luscious pile of fat-rimmed beef nestled in between two halves of soft, buttered white roll. Mission BBQ is about ten minutes away from my house so I've come here several times to get my BBQ fix but I still don't know what all the hype is about. The decor is patriotic and enthusiastic, the staff is super friendly and helpful, but when it comes down to the core of the restaurant, THE FOOD, it's terribly underwhelming. I usually get the pulled pork sandwich with various sides (green beans, creamed corn, french fries, corn bread, baked beans), but I find the roll they use to hold the pork to be too...bready. It soaks up all the juices from the meat so the whole sandwich becomes too dry. And I don't particularly like any of their six barbeque sauces. I tend to prefer a peppery, spicy barbeque sauce so I usually end up having to mix several of their sauces to achieve that flavor. Last night in particular, I ordered just the pulled pork on its own with baked beans and cornbread, which they gave me for free. I found the pork to be tasty but dry. The beans were pretty good but a little soupy. The cornbread was delicious, though! But I think $10 is a little steep for just one serving of meat and a small side. The quick service and helpful staff is their saving grace. A few members of their staff stopped by our table multiple times to make sure everything was okay and even took our trays when we were finished. But as far as eating good barbeque, I'll stick to Andy Nelson's, which I'd confidently rate as the best barbeque in Maryland. read more

We've been going to this Mission BBQ for years and we think this is the original location. We started dining here again two months or so with the COVID 19 pandemic slowing down somewhat in Maryland. The first time back , we felt the portions were a little smaller but the prices were the same. They recently raised there prices about 10-20% but we do not mind. Portions are very good now and the food is always great. We love the brisket. Always tender and well prepared. I we love the 8 varieties of BBQ sauces too. Real, authentic BBQ with some banging sides and sauces. The brisket plate XL with potato salad and Mac n cheese is my personal go-to. It's a really good place for a comfort meal in a pinch. I wish they had more green sides but it's a BBQ place so I get that's not realistic, haha. Solid BBQ joint for brisket or a pulled pork sandwich but I would refrain from ordering the chicken or ribs. So this was my first time ever having bread pudding so I didn't know what I was in for .. I'm a huge sweets person and love donuts. This place is the best barbeque I've had. I spent a few years in North Carolina and that is where I was introduced to real barbeque. I have had some trouble finding a place in Maryland that could match the flavor down south. This place does it and then some. The barbeque sauces are unique and delicious. I recommend buying some to go. They package it up in a ball mason jar which is differnt and cool. Being that I leaned to love bbq in NC I really had a love for pork bbq only and never tasted a beef brisket I liked. But the brisket here as many others have said, is freaking incredible! I can't say enough about how good it was. The brisket dipped in the Smokey Mountain sauce was the best bbq flavor I've ever tasted. Well be returning many many times! Was at the Bel Air store yesterday for the first time, to try also for the first time their products. What a big disappointment ! You call that BBQ ? More like beef jerky. Pulled pork sandwich and chicken sandwich, I could not tell the difference which was which, they both tasted bland, no flavor and way too shredded. Ribs sucked the worst. Spent $40 and I think Arbys would have been better for half price, even though I never went to Arbys. I cannot understand what the big fuss is all about. read more

When you walk into this restaurant you feel like you stepped into a wall of Americana. There are military pictures and other military memorabilia all over their walls. Outside of the building it is clean and it stands out from the bed of other bland establishments. The plating is very rustic and unique. I got the ribs and it was fall off the bones delicious. You can definitely taste the smoke on the ribs. The smoke flavor is not overwhelming. Rather the smoke flavor is the perfect hint of flavor profile. Portions are smaller than typical BBQ spots. There are a wide range of sauces to choose from. I am the queen of sauce so I just basically dump all of the sauces onto my food. I do have to mention this is one of the best BBQ spots in the location. However, if you try BBQ in the south, it's much better. The flavor is better. The portions are ginormous. They have 8 different sauces, and when I say different, I mean they all have there own distinct flavor. I tried many items to get a sense of their strengths and weaknesses, if any. They are set up for assembly line like a chipotles. For a quick Thursday night dinner, my husband and decided to try Mission BBQ. There were about four people ahead of us when we got in line but it only took a minute or so for someone to take our order. I ordered the (lean) brisket sandwich and fries. There were large hunks of brisket on a tasty brioche bun and the fries were good. The amount of meat was good enough for two sandwiches, for me at least.
