i'm taking 6+ units in person so i receive $30/week free dining cash. complimentary tea/coffee with creamer/sweetners throughout the day. the cafeteria cafe sells $6-$7 lattes/matcha that taste very similar to starbucks so i believe its from there. my go to is the chicken ranch wrap ($7.50) and it can have either tofu or grilled chicken. the layer of ranch is very light, the chicken is juicy, and u get some bacon bits. the gochujang burger is also fantastic! the bun is wheat with gochu chili sauce spread on. there's a decent serving of protein! ive yet to try more of their food but overall not funky and filling. i always have a meal here anytime im on campus. the first thursday of the fall semester is welcoming week bbq. faculty were uplifting and kind. 11am to 1:30pm. my plate included salad (ranch provided), baked beans, some mystery sausage meat, and THE BEST EVER MAC AND CHEESE. i tasted truffly almost. i'm guessing it's a macaroni salad hybrid? read more

Cool thing that entire place is a learning experience for the students learning hospitality and dining, which makes all the staff super friendly. Food is super fresh and is a lot cheaper than most choices you can get around the area. Just be wary that it's open only in the Spring for lunch hours. read more

Totally cafeteria style. The price is very fair, your meal includes, soup, salad, bread, entree, side, dessert, and drinks. I wish the food was warmer, it was kind of just room temp. My crab crostini didn't have any green onions on them but everyone else who ordered them had some, they kind of just gave me my dish right away since they were behind a bit. Great food, super affordable, great service.. did I mention the great food? I tried it out last Tuesday after class and let me tell you, I was blown away by the menu, the service, the professionalism, the enthusiasm of the students (kitchen crew), and the yummy-ness of the food. I got the manager's special.. a side of Spanish rice, 2 chicken tamales, black beans, a side salad w/ chipotle dressing (super good!!!!), and corn soup.. forgot the actual name of the soup for just $6!!! I will definitely come back here once a week to support the program that I'm in but it's not just that, the food is awesome and restaurant-quality like even though we are students on the learning journey of Hospitality! I absolutely love this place and have been coming here, on and off, for over 10 years. The food is freshly prepared and is usually quite good. The dining room is clean and spacious, and the staff is polite and helpful. It's a student run cafe, so don't expect everything to be perfect. But for $8-12 (which includes the main dish, soup, salad, bread, dessert and drinks) it's a great deal. There is always a vegetarian option, and the sides (soup, salad) are also often vegetarian. Plus the students (as well as their instructors) take great pride in their craft. Plan on going early, since the popular items sell out fast. One of the things I wanted to make sure I did here before graduating was to have a lunch in the Mission Bistro. This past Thursday, my boyfriend and I did just that. The food was very good and the servers were attentive and friendly. The salmon was a generous portion, served on a very tasty toss of pea shoots and radishes. The tacos made boyfriend happy. There were only two things that did not quite let me give five stars. The dessert we chose was a deconstructed cheesecake with a basil chiffonade, it just did not work. The basil was not noticeable, it did not seem to have any flavor and basil has a very distinctive flavor, normally. So it did not really add to the dish. The "filling" seemed to taste like cream cheese and sour cream with no sweetness added, the berries seems to be a combination of fresh cut (that were also on the tart side) and macerated, with no sugar. The graham crumbles were flat and did not add enough sweetness to the dish. Basically, it was a plate of pretty, yet, unrelentingly sour food. It was an interesting concept, but not well executed. The other thing was the lighting. I know, because I have been in this room before for other school functions, that it is a space used for other, more classroom-like purposes, but I think the lighting was a little harsh for the ambiance. They go all out for linens and uniforms and such well presented, well-made food, and then you eat it under classroom lighting. Overall, it was a good meal, and we will probably go back at least once more before commencement. The survey below asks me if there are Gender Neutral restrooms, and I do not know if the restrooms in this building are gender neutral, some of the restrooms on campus are, for instance, in the new sports complex, so even though they are not marked as such, because it is an older building, I do not believe anyone will have an issue with people using the room they feel most comfortable with for their gender. read more

Ever feel like you want to go back to your college days... but with better food? About a month ago the San Jose Mercury News reported that Mission College had opened the Owl Cove Cafe on their campus. I decided to go undercover and check it out. Or maybe I just checked it out. Either way we were the only non-college students there. The hospitality school runs the cafe, and it's only open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's student run and they each take a turn as manager for the day, and run the kitchen and select what will be prepared. The menu changes each day and you can subscribe to the mailing list to get the menu for the week. The joy of being on the mailing list is that you sometimes also will get alerts around 12:30 that they're all out of food for the day. So go early. The day we visited, the boyfriend chose the beef fajitas with white rice ($8), and I got the cheese and vegetable enchiladas ($7). Entrees always include rolls, an all-you-can-eat salad bar, a soft drink, and a choice of desserts. They also make a "pantry item" each day (our day was $7 taco salad), as well as a dish served "demonstration style" (our day was a $6 grilled turkey and cheese sandwich). Other days include the, no doubt more exciting, Bananas Foster. You get quite a lot of bang for the buck. However, it definitely feels more like a cafeteria than a cafe. My boyfriend declared that the food tasted like his college dorm food on a normal day, which is a compliment from him since he loved his food at Cornell. (I, however, had a perfectly acceptable public school education at Berkeley and had the worst food of anyone I know.) However, his fajitas had been sitting in a covered steam tray and looked a bit dried out. My enchiladas tasted okay, but suffered from hard, dry edges from the baking (and then sitting around) process. Our cranberry and sunflower seed rolls were the best part of our meal. From the outside they looked like ordinary dinner rolls, but inside each one there was a cluster of cranberries and sunflower seeds. The students were obviously really proud of these, and a few asked, "Did you like the surprise inside?" We ate at 12:30 which probably didn't help us in terms of the freshness of our entrees, but since we were possibly the last ones through the line, we were offered as many rolls as we wanted (we probably could have had a couple extra desserts, too). The salad bar was exceptional and had a lot of good, fresh ingredients, although it would have been nice to see them labeled. The dressings were Dijon mustard (which I didn't see but might have missed) and lime vinaigrette (I liked this one). Our dessert was a choice between a poached pear in chocolate and churros in Bavarian cream sauce. We chose the pear, but to be honest I'd never had a poached pear before so although I thought it was just okay, I don't feel I can properly judge it. The student manager was really nice, and stopped at each table to chat and find out how we liked our food. She was apologetic about dishes we hadn't even tried ("Let me know what you think of the pear. A lot of people returned them because they were too hard."), which was sweet. Was the cafe amateurish? Of course. Is it the California Culinary Academy? Of course not. Is eating here helping nice kids who want a career in the hospitality industry? Yes. (Crap. I sound like Donald Rumsfeld.) I will definitely be back. I check the weekly menus and am waiting until there's another entree that appeals to me. It's a nice change of pace from the tired Silicon Valley lunch spots. I just spoke with the instructor, Mr. Hayes, regarding the cafe this semester, and he informed me that there have been some changes. It is now called Mission Cafe, rather than Owl Cove Cafe, and they have had problems with their email system, so many of us who are on the email lists have not received anything from them. They have been open since February, and will be serving until May 17th. They only serve Tuesdays and Thursdays, but have extended their hours this semester. It is the restaurant-style of serving food this time, rather than last Fall's method of cafeteria-style. Prices and choices are more a la carte, rather than the fixed pricing of last Fall. Super, super happy I ate here. Service was excellent, both in terms of timing and attentiveness. The flauta special was perfect - not greasy, with a great crunch on the tortillas. The green sauce on the side was creamy, flavorful, and had the right amount of heat. The orange sorbet was very good. The best was the passion fruit cooler. Both breads were excellent. I'm a student here and had high hopes for an alternative for our school's unappealing cafeteria. So far, I've eaten at the Bistro three times. The staff is very friendly. The first time I visited, the manager's special was a pork chop, and that was quite yummy. Unfortunately the next day I went, after my class got out at 12:20 pm, the manager's special was already sold out so I got the only other non-vegetarian item on the menu, which was smoked ribs with sauerkraut. Not a great combo IMO, but I filled up on soup and rolls. The rolls are really good. There's two soups and usually at least one of them is good. Desserts are hit-or-miss. Today the manager's special was supposed to be Cornish hen, but again, it was sold out by the time I got there, and the only other things they had were the ribs n' sauerkraut or coconut tofu (WTF?). I politely declined. The manager's special is the only good option and it seems to be always sold out. I guess they are expecting us to skip our morning classes in order to be able to eat it. If this were an actual independent enterprise and not a college-funded thing, I doubt they could stay in business running out of food all the time and promising options they don't deliver. I wish the hospitality students all the best, but I am tired of getting my hopes up and being disappointed and I probably will not return. read more

Lunch time is great but I'm writing this review for their evening service! Yesterday was the first day they were serving dinner. From the email it says it is from 5:15-7:15pm. My family and I got there around 6:20pm went inside and it looked like it was close. We wanted to make sure so we waited for someone to acknowledge us, but no one did! Some of them saw us but ignored us! What kind of service is that?! We finally just went up to a girl and asked if you guys ran out of food and she simply just said yes. That's it? Did you not learn to treat customers in a friendly manner?! In conclusion, the email was misleading. Don't say that service is from 5:15-7:15 when it isn't true at all. The students weren't friendly. Don't waste your time to go during the evening. They won't have any food. If I knew this was the case, I wouldn't bother going. What a great little gem! No, it's not a five star establishment. It's not even a four-star. But then, it doesn't charge four and five star prices! My friend and I headed out here today after receiving their email menu. Today's featured meal was sliced boneless pork shoulder with garlic mashed potatoes and bacon green beans. The pork was very well cooked. The sauce was somewhat sweet, almost like a cross between ketchup and BBQ sauce, but not quite. Personally, I think the pork would have been great served with grilled onions and apples with a cider apple sauce - but that may be too ambitious for this program. The mashed potatoes were good. No complaints. The green beans were out of this world good. I would gladly have forgone the pork and potatoes and just eaten a ginormous plate of green beans. The sourdough roll was very good. Dense, with a chewy crust. Yummy. Included in the meal is the salad bar and soup bar. The salad bar had a nice selection of fresh cut lettuce and a variety of things to add. The dressings today were Italian and Creamy Buttermilk. Both were a tad too sweet. The soups were creamy butternut squash and tomato. My friend had the butternut squash soup and suggested some flavorings and spices to perk it up. I tried the tomato and would pass on it the next time. It was very acidic, a bit of a metallic aftertaste, and could have used some herbs, such as Thyme. A little sugar would have balanced the acidity. The dessert was something akin to a pumpkin ginger chocolate brownie. I actually liked it, but my friend felt a burn in the back of her throat. After tasting it, we both suspected there was cayenne in the dessert. A quick inquiry with the table staff confirmed that yes, there was cayenne in the batter. Okay, I liked the addition of the cayenne. They may just have had a tad too much of it. And how much did all this cost us? Hold on to your knickers folks - it cost us a whole $8 each. Out the door. They are open for lunch Tuesday's and Thursday's and the menu changes each day. My wife and I went there today to celebrate our 19th anniversary and the food was excellent. We shared the big ass Bistro Burger with bacon and cheese and the Whiskey Chicken Pasta with mushrooms and penne. Both were excellent. Our waitress kept the beverages coming and she was quite attentive in spite of being very busy. I must say, the atmosphere was lively without being loud. The place was packed and all seemed to be enjoying their meals. As I mentioned, the place was jumping, so the word must be getting out about one of the best kept dining secrets around. Excellent food, great service, and a fabulous experience. Free parking too! BTW, the Demonstration Kitchen is a very pleasant plus. Get there early if you prefer to sit in a regular chair as opposed to a tall bar-stool type chair. Another plus my wife pointed out is that they are very respectful and accommodating to people in wheelchairs. This place is so good, it's a school for people that are in culinary school, they prepare the food, like it's a real restraint. There's a cashier, (yes, you have to pay) but you get a main course, they usually have several. The first day, they had braised beef ribs, with some corn something on the bottom. This place is pretty much hit or miss. It's run by the HM program at Mission College, and well... Hello... These are college students LEARNING to run and manage a restaurant. Sometimes the food is near culinary excellence, and sometimes it's just ho-hum... I encourage anyone to come and try it out. If there is something that appeals to you on the menu. (It is always changing.)you should go! You don't have to be staff or a student at Mission College. You can park in parking lot c on the days they are serving, Tuesdays & Thursdays. You are given a card where you can rank and comment on everything from food to service. Remember to be completely honest. This is how they can improve, and perhaps make it better the next time around. I recently visited the owl cafe. My overall experience was great. For those of you that don't know, the Owl Cove Cafe is on the Mission College Campus, and open for Lunch Tue and Thur. Whats unique about the Owl Cove Cafe, is the the meals are served, planned and prepared by Mission College students in the Hospitality Management Program. The price was great, nothing more then about $10, and the meal included your meal, your drink and bread for your table. The service I received was great. Every person was very friendly and helpful. The food was very delicious, it's hard to believe that it came from a student. It was very flavorful and well cooked. The french onion soup was wonderful, I've had french onion soup at many places, including some very pricey restaurants, and I have to say that The Owl Cafe is one of the best I've ever tried. Great little restaurant! Low prices and great food! This was my first time to the Owl Cove cafe, and I would highly recommend this restaurant. One great part, is that the meal price includes soup/salad, main course, drinks, and dessert! There was also complimentary bread, was nice and flakey, tasted great! The soup I chose was a creamy cauliflower soup. I don't really like cauliflower, but this was delicious! Had cheddar cheese, and was nice and creamy! My main course was the Mission Burger, with a side of fries. The burger was delicious as well! Very juicy, and filling! The only bad part was the fries were a little overcooked. The food was excellent for being prepared by students, it tasted as good as any other restaurant's food. If I didn't know that it was prepared by students, I would have never known by the taste. But what is really awesome about that Owl Cove Café was that you get the entire meal (salad, drink, dessert, and main dish) all for one price! I highly recommend that you try the Owl Cove Café for lunch. I was tired of eating the same standard lunch fare, sandwiches, burgers, pastas, and salads...so on my friend suggested that I try Owl Café at Mission College. What makes this place special is that the food is prepared and served by Mission College culinary students. Don't look for the Owl Café menu on-line as I could not find it. But that didn't stop me from calling in a takeout order! The person answering the phone was very helpful and gracious. She read every menu item with delectable descriptions. I chose the Special of the Day, grilled pork chops, asparagus spears, mashed potatoes, and a green salad with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I was looking forward to the pork chops as so many restaurants over cook them, drying them out or leaving them scary pink. Owl Café got it right! The pork chops were grilled to perfection - tender and moist, and no scary pink. The portion was 2 nice size chops. The pork chops had a hint of sweet peppery flavor that complimented the taste of the meat. I wish I had the menu because I can only guess that the sweetness came from maple syrup. The asparagus spears were cut length-wise which I thought was unusually but aesthetically pleasing. The spears were gently stir fried and seasoned to enhance its flavor and leaving them a bright green color with a little fresh crispness still in them. The asparagus was definitely a yummy side dish. I only wish I had more. The mashed potatoes where made from red potatoes with a few red skins left on to give the dish a nice color. I thought the potatoes were good and did not compete with the other flavors or textures of the other dishes. The green salad was a standard salad with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, grated carrots, and radishes but the highlight was the balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Not to be missed if you like balsamic vinegar. It was delightfully refreshing and perky with a hint of tartness that made your tongue take notice. The entire lunch cost me $8 which I thought was reasonable considering I ate 2 pork chops and 3 side dishes and had food left over. My lunch was delicious, even eaten out of the carry out box. I still haven't solved the mysterious container of brown sauce made with horseradish. I assume it was for the pork chops or maybe not. Whatever it was, the food didn't need it! I suggest that if you get carry out, use your own utensils. Those white, bendy plastic fork and knife designed for toddlers or accident prone people were not substantial enough to eat my pork chops. The highlight of the meal was the perfectly grilled, savory pork chops. I highly recommend you try Owl Cove Café the next time you are near Mission College in Santa Clara. When I first learn about the Owl Cove Cafe, I thought it might not be that good at all. But what a surprise. I had the prosciutto wrap chicken breast with vegetables and it was delicious. The prosciutto added a bit to salty a taste to the breast, but it was cooked just right and was juicy and tender. I ordered the salad with my meal and the vinaigrette dressing in it was nicely balance with taste and lightness. For me the best part of the meal was the chocolate shortcake, out of this world good. The Owl Cove Cafe is amazing. For a school restaurant, you would not think it would be that professional. I have a vary delectable meal, chicken wrapped in prosciutto with a side of Alfredo and broccoli. This dish would make you came back for more. Drew Harris We got to the cafe at the peak of lunch time and the resturant was packed. They needed to clear a table for us and the hostess did it quickly. We were seated and it took about 15 mins for our order to be taken. Again it was really busy so I understand. Our waitress was very nice. We placed our order. Our soup arrived and it was French onion. It was a little under salted and I was shorted on the cheese and the small piece of bread that's usually there.Our main course arrived to the table and they brought me the wrong food. I ordered chicken Marsala and they gave me a sandwhich lol. But the waitress was nice and the kitchen was quick to fix the mistake. The chicken Marsala was Amazing. Highly recommend. read more

Awesome food and great service!!! I went there last thursday. The place was packed and I had to wait for about 10 minutes. I ordered Ox tales stew and they served it with salad and french bread. yesterday I had the opportunity to taste food from the owl cave cafe. I ordered a shrimp dish, salad with apple cider vinaigrette, celery soup, and some dessert for only $6. The food and the service were outstanding and the price too. the school offers free parking space in lot C during the lunch hours. i would highly recommend this place because they are cheap but with good quality food and the variety of the menu. i would definitely come back again. read more

The students at the college put a lot of effort and passion into the food served at the Bistro. The menu cycles frequently so you'll never be bored returning to this place. They have a wide variety of dishes and even a vegetarian option. Unlimited salad, soup, drinks, and dessert only add to the experience. Service is polite and fast. I would recommend coming here for good food and service as well as providing these students with hands on experience. Also helps that the prices are very reasonable. read more
