Reading some of the negative reviews of this joint, one thing becomes obvious--I must have dined at a different restaurant. Some reviewers have said that it is an Americanized Chinese restaurant and not authentic. My first reaction as my son and I were sucking the soup out of our soup dumplings was the exact opposite. I repeatedly told him "these are just like the dumplings you get in Shanghai." We buried our faces on the dumplings and would just bring our faces out to utter 'uhmmmmm.' The salt and pepper calamari was spectacular (albeit a little oily). This was yet another authentic dish leaving nothing to be desired when compared to the salt and pepper squid or prawns you get in the street markets in Hong Kong. The Szechuan Chili & Spiced Onions With Flounder was a bit of an disappointment as I was expecting it to be submerged in broth and oil. This was a dry version of the Szechuan boiled fish with chili oil. However, the taste was equally good. I wanted to introduce this dish to my kids but it was quite spicy for them and they were unable to handle it. Overall, it was a great experience. And here is my framework for reviewing restaurants: - Does the food tickle the brain? Absolutely. Soup dumplings always offer that whimsical experience and the ma-la effect of the Szechuan pepper on both the calamari and the Schezuan chili fish always sparkles the brain. - Did I learn something new (I love to cook, did I learn something I would want to replicate at home?) the coating on the squid, probably made with a carbonated drink and corn starch was very good and something I want to try. - Is the food beyond my skill level? I don't think I can replicate the dumplings at home and that is one reason for me to go back to this restaurant. The fish is also quite complex and requires mixtures of spices that I would not easily be able to replicate at home. - Did the food make me happy? It was a very happy meal!!! read more

The only good item we had last night were the soup dumplings. It was all downhill after that. Ribs, mediocre, lo mien with roast pork, ok. General Chows chicken was soggy with a gloppy sauce. Worst of the night were the salt and pepper shrimp. The shrimp were overcooked with the shells still on, all on top of soggy iceberg lettuce and a scattering of diced who knows what. They were also rushing to get us out so they could close up at 8:30. Won't be back and don't recommend you go there either. read more

At 8:45 for some weird reason they started bum rushing us and the two other tables that were there out of the restaurant so they could close. A quick review after trying Mr. Chen two weeks in a row. I will be brief. Wanton Soup and Egg Drop Soup: Acceptable. Shredded Beef with Chili Pepper: Beef was good. Hardly any chili peppers. Mostly scallions and celery. Dan Dan Noodles: Not recommended. There are dozens of Chinese noodles - maybe hundreds, so why did Mr. Chen use Italian Linguini as the noodle for this dish? If I want Linguini, I will go to an Italian restaurant. But in a Chinese restaurant, I do not want to see Italian pasta on my plate. It was far too over-cooked. Dan Dan sauce was fair to poor in substance and in flavor. For me, the jury is still out. So far, it has been hit or miss. I'm willing to try a few more dishes before giving up. The trouble is that there aren't many good Chinese restaurants in Westchester or lower Connecticut. read more

I have been meaning to try this spot as I am a huge fan of anything Szechuan. I was a little skeptical because I have tried many restaurants that were either inconsistent with the Szechuan flavor or just did not taste good. I was pleasantly surprised with the food. The interior decor was very modern and everything was clean. We ordered a plethora of dishes, one my favorites was the Szechuan Chili & Spiced Beef, Eggplant with chicken in garlic sauce, Peking style pork ribs, Steam pork soup dumplings, Braised beef noodle soup and Beef chow fun. The dishes were all quite flavorful. My favorite was the Szechuan Chili & Spiced Beef. The flavor was so great, and they put so many vegetables in there as well. The soup dumplings were very delicious, better than some of other places in Westchester. The ambience and waitress were all very nice. We visited on a week night and it was really quiet until much later when more guests showed up. I highly recommend this place for anyone seeking some authentic Szechuan dishes. read more

Mamaroneck Ave in the village of Mamaroneck is dotted with Asian fusion restaurants serving almost identical fare. The newly opened Mr Chen took advantage of a hitherto uncatered niche, designing a menu with largely Taiwan, Shanghai and Beijing influences. The restaurant's undisputed star offering has got to be their soup dumplings which qualify as the best I have tasted in Westchester. Freshly made and steamed upon order by two Chinese ladies in a corner of the restaurant, they are served piping hot, the delicate dumpling skin just thick enough to hold the extremely tasty broth within. The Crabmeat & Pork Soup Dumpling is a clear favourite although the regular Pork Soup Dumplings are also very good. Apart from soup dumplings, Mr Chen offers a variety of delicious appetisers which could be shared family style, such as: - Beef Scallion Pancake (crispy pancake roll loaded with sliced beef, scallions and hoisin sauce) - Red Bean Paste Cakes (warm buttery flaky pastries filled with sweet red bean paste) - Boneless Spare Ribs (sweet savoury barbecued pork, aka char siew) - Pan Fried Pork Buns It's worth checking out the numerous vegetable stir fry options, whether it may be Sautéed Bok Choy / peppery String Beans/ garlicky Eggplants/ silky Pea Shoot Leaves/ crunchy Chinese Water Spinach. The latter two are seldom offered by Chinese restaurants in Westchester, I would encourage you to try them while here. We love their intensely aromatic Three Cup Chicken - hint of Chinese wine, touch of soy sauce, blend of scallions, ginger, garlic and basil leaves...the sautéed chicken cubes displaying a delightful medley of sweet, savory and aromatic flavors. If you are looking for a rice dish, I would recommend the Taiwanese style rice bowl -white rice topped with an assortment of pickles, pork floss, soy sauce braised pork and egg. A hearty meal on its own but also perfect for sharing. The herbal and mildly spiced Braised Beef Noodle Soup is competent although personally I would have preferred the broth to have more body and a richer flavor. Zha Jiang Mian, an ubiquitous noodle dish in China and Taiwan failed to make it onto Mr Chen's menu but there is always hope... Mr Chen offers a gateway to experience different traditions of Chinese cuisine, it's a great opportunity to explore and venture off the beaten path every now and then. Situated where the old Haiku used to reside, Mr. Chen is a new spot on the ever popular and busy Mamaroneck Ave. I stopped in for lunch recently and was seated very quickly as it was slow around 1pm. Then again, that is pretty common at pretty much any spot on Mamaroneck Ave. during lunchtime. The interior is nice if unremarkable. The staff were quick to come by to take my drink order and drop off a menu. I opted for the sauteed string beans w. chicken & brown rice (from their lunch menu). The flavor was on point and kicked up a notch by the hot oil I asked for. The lunch special gives you a choice of 3 soups and I opted for the hot & sour. The portion sizes were just right and I felt like the price point was pot on at $10. All in all, a nice place that I'd not hesitate to stop in again. read more

I was a bit anxious to try the restaurant because reviews were all over the place. The decor is very nice and we were greeted immediately by a very friendly host. He also served as our waiter. He answered all my questions and was extremely attentive. My hubby and I tried the Plum wine. It was delicious since we like sweet drinks. We ordered the cucumber, it was refreshing but a bit bland. We had the scallion pancakes and they arrived quick and steaming hot and tasted good. The veggie spring rolls were ok. Of course they are known for their dumplings. We had the pork soup dumplings and they are to die for. Delicious!!! We also ordered General TSO chicken and Sesame beef. Beef tasted good and the sauce was nice but the meat was not tenderized and the pieces were too big. Had to use knife to cut them which was disappointing because I like eating with the chop sticks. The chicken pieces were humongous and I believe that affected the taste. Little flavor and the sauce was not great and the chicken was not velvetized either. I heard that the food was good so I put an order with door dash and when the order arrived I was very disappointed . I ordered spare ribs and they were under cooked and very fatty. The sesame noodles were good but it had a human black hair in them so the kitchen crew should be better trained to be more careful. The salt and pepper shrimp had the shells on them and were very bleached only one good one in the whole order. Also ordered general Tso chicken and it was old and very gamey I called the place and did not get a good response from the owner who told me to call door dash if I had a problem. Generally good Chinese American food. Service is excellent. Absolutely the most American of Chinese food you will find. However, if you want real Cantonese, Mandarin, or Vietnamese food, you've got to go to Flushing Queens. The food here is usually very fresh but bland. I made the mistake of ordering a delivery at 4 PM on a Tuesday and the food I received was definitely from the day before. Stuff like this happens so it's no big deal. My mom has been there, and wanted me to try the wonton soup. So we went. I must say it was really good they were so thin and light! The soup didn't have much flavor, but the wontons were awesome. Best Xiao Long Bao place in Westchester. You could find authentic Taiwanese food here. (I've never been to Taiwan anway... We went there for a quick dinner before having to go to work. The decor is nice and still pretty new since they just opened about 6 month ago (according to the waitress I spoke to). As far as the food goes, it was just ok. We got the soup dumplings and out of the 6, 2 was broken. The meat inside the dumplings was dry and tough instead of tender and moist. You might think that's confusing since the dumpling has soup inside so how can it be dry? Well, this happens when the meat is overcooked. Compared to the soup dumplings at Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao in Flushing, this was pretty bad. The Braised Pork Belly was better but didn't really do much for me, especially at $19 for an ok portion. It tasted too much like American pulled pork. The service was prompt and the alcohol menu is relatively good priced. HORROR SHOW! We went here for Chinese New Year but got there early enough that we were seated right away. Four of us: couple, pre schooler and infant. The whole night was a poop show largely due to service. We saw any number of people leave without getting their dinner because service was so bad. I would say don't waste your money and time at their place. My family and I love Chinese food and recently moved to the neighborhood. We were very excited when we saw that this restaurant had soup dumplings. We picked up a take out order the other night and ordered some of our usual favorite dishes. We were all very disappointed once we sat down to eat. The dumplings had a funny taste to them and it looked the like pork was still pink and not cooked enough, the cold sesame noodles had a sour flavor and seemed like something was spoiled in the dish. The chicken with garlic was good, shrimp dish was over cooked and the fried rice had no flavor. Needless to say, we all agreed that it was disappointing. This is the only one star review I have ever given, and I don't do it lightly bc I don't write angry or nasty reviews. I ordered pickup from here on Christmas day, and it took them 2.5 hours to prepare my food. I arrived at the restaurant an hour after I had placed the order, knowing that it was Christmas day and that they would be busy. As soon as I entered, the staff avoided eye contact and scurried past me. I tried to be understanding and waited ten minutes trying to catch someone's attention, until finally I had to tap on a waitress's shoulder to ask her about my order. She told me to ask someone else and ran away. Eventually, someone told me that my order would be ready in a few minutes. 30 minutes later I checked in again and was told to wait another 30 minutes. This continued until the restaurant had a handful of tables remaining, at which point I asked them if my order had even been put in. A waitress told me they were working their way through the tables first, and that they would prepare my food soon. I wouldn't have been angry if they were upfront with me and told me when I walked in that it would be an additional 1.5 hours until my food was ready so that I could have spent my time elsewhere. The staff was actively rude to me and did not offer a single apology. They also did not provide a discount or anything for taking so long with the food. The only reason I am giving this place a one star review is because of how I was treated. As a business, they should treat their customers with more respect. read more

My wife daughter and two nieces were there Saturday night and were harassed as they were leaving by one of the waiters who demanded more cash money for his tip my family came home shaken up by this experience that should have never happened because the tip is not mandatory that behavior should not be tolerated and it is unacceptable and I will report it to the Village of Mamaroneck Town Hall !
