We recently tried Mister Chen and overall had a really good experience. We ordered the pork soup dumplings (6), mapo tofu with white rice, and chicken with broccoli with brown rice. The soup dumplings were definitely the highlight. They make the dumplings right in the restaurant and you can watch them being made. The dumplings were flavorful and full of soup, and my son especially loved them. Six dumplings ended up being a good amount for us. The vinegar came in a dropper which seems ingenious - much easier than dipping. The chicken and broccoli was also very tasty. The chicken was soft and nicely velveted, and the portions were generous. The mapo tofu was okay -- a little saltier than expected -- but still good when eaten with the rice. The brown rice itself was slightly on the hard side. Service was very good. Our server, a young man, was attentive without being overbearing, which we appreciated. One thing to note: parking can be tricky since it's all street parking and there are a lot of nearby shops. We happened to come on a holiday around 3 pm, so parking was easy for us. Overall, good food, large portions, and friendly service. We'd come back again. read more

Mister Chen is an authentic Chinese restaurant located on a strip with several Asian cuisine spots, so the competition here is stiff. I enjoyed my visit overall, but my ratings are very much based on comparison with similar restaurants in the area. Pork Belly Sandwich (B-) This was the most underwhelming dish for me, though I'll admit I'm a tough critic since I order pork belly whenever it's on the menu. The bao bun itself was delicious, but the pork lacked depth of flavor and leaned a bit dry, even with the added peanuts. Not bad--just not standout. General Tso's Chicken (A-) Excellent quality chicken--some of the best I've had for this dish. I would've liked a bit more heat, but it was flavorful and well executed regardless. It should be light and airy, but it was thick. I did like the fried onions and garlic thrown on top though. The shrimp and pork wontons in spicy chili oil fell flat. The chili oil and wontons lacked flavor and the wrappers were not soft. Sigh... you may fare better sticking to basic Chinese American fare, but that was not what I wanted. Let me start by saying, I was weaned on Chinese food, every Sunday the family would get in the car and go to, China Town NYC. The Hot and Sour Soup had good flavor, however if you're going to serve a bowl of soup, fill the bowl all the way not just half way, feel like I got ripped off. Based on recent reviews and my two most recent visits, this place seems to be in a steady decline. Aside from a couple of good apps (the rock shrimp and scratch-made soup dumplings are both excellent), their main dishes have lately been very underwhelming. But the bigger issue is the service. Most of the employees, at least during our past two visits, have been late teens/early 20s, and it shows. There was confusion with our order, drinks were forgotten, dishes were coming out at random times, and we were asked by different staff members on multiple occasions if we wanted to order and if we wanted the check after another staff member had already done so like five minutes prior. The 5 glass dumplings in the tiny serving were tough and tasteless. The wonton dumplings were messy, overcooked with just a speck of taste. We were deeply, pleasantly surprised by our latest delivery from Mister Chen. It will not be the last! I was scared even to get the soup dumplings since I've had a lot of awful experiences ordering delivery soup dumplings. It's obviously not the preferred method of consumption. However, the ones we got were the best I've had since moving from Queens. It's pricey, but I'd gladly pay it again given the quality. The mapo tofu was a little divisive in my household, but I thought it was quite good and closer to authenticity than I've had at other establishments. It was decently spicy, too. Having driven through the amazingly revitalized downtown Mamaroneck, and cursing said revitalization as I spy eagle eyed for a place to park, I've seen Mister Chen but never gave it a thought. I am firmly in the camp that Westchester does not have any good Chinese food. Save for maybe Foo Chow in Tuckahoe and that is strictly cash, down and dirty takeout. So we were looking for something different and stumbled right in front as the parking gods provided a spot. Why not? Kismet? Gotta tell you I was totally impressed. Place was clean, even the glass as you enter, staff was welcoming and the decor pleasant. Service was excellent, food was very tasty and well portioned. The General Tso's chicken was not overly sweet and greasy but tender and had a really nice kick of spice that lasted a minute. We ate Americanized Chinese as nothing we had would resemble anything I'd order in Flushing or Sunset Park. But it was good. Hands down better than the plethora of Chinese restaurants dotting every town here in the burbs. When I have the urge to eat Chinese, and can't fit in a trip to the city... This isn't it. We walked into the restaurant and no one greeted us. I don't mean that no one was there. I could see staff. 1 guy was facing us only 7 feet away. But he just looked at us and didn't move or speak. There was an uncontrolled, SCREAMING toddler at the table near the door, so I decided we'd seat ourselves-far from the noise. Thankfully, someone did come by right away with menus. When a waiter appeared, he seemed to be on autopilot & not really ready to engage. There was someone rolling fresh scallion pancakes. Seemed like a great feature, but the waiter didn't seem enthusiastic about it. I asked about the comparison between the plain & the beef scallion pancakes. He said, "1 has beef." Okaaaay. I ordered the beef. Since THAT was being made fresh, I asked whether anything else was made fresh on premises. He looked lost as if he couldn't understand me at all. I said, "I see you make the pancakes fresh" & I pointed at the woman rolling dough, "what else do you make fresh?" His reply? "We don't have pancakes." WTH? He just took my pancake order!! I gave up & just decided to order as if I was using Grubhub. I decided to splurge on the $22 salt & pepper shrimp. I have fond memories of salt & pepper seafood items that I used to order when I worked in lower Manhattan's Chinatown. I figured it was a safe bet. That is until the dish showed up completely unseasoned, with lots of shrimp shell under thick batter. And someone explains why they put hoisen sauce on the side? To make up for the lack of salt & pepper? It was the only thing I could taste. Oh wait! I forgot to mention that it took a while for me to taste it at all! One of the many bussers came by & offered to bring us clean plates as he put down the shrimp dish and brown rice. But he never did bring plates. I kept waving to the back of the room where the bussers stood around talking. No response. Eventually, 1 of them walked away & I got the attention of the remaining guy who looked at me like I surely needed someone else. Finally, he came over before my food was completely cold. I told him we could not eat the food without the plates we'd been promised. He expressed that he understood and promised to bring back plates. He didn't. I finally had to get up and take the small plates off a nearby table. I replaced them with dirty items from our table. No one cared. They let the vacant table sit dirty that way. They never returned to us. The waiter didn't come by either. The tasteless food was cold, so I decided to just bring it home and season it properly myself. The waiter finally came by and asked how things were. I told him. His response was to make excuses instead of apologizing. His grasp of English magically returned as he claimed the shrimp tasted fine. I informed him that I've worked in both Chinatown and on Main St. in Flushing & was familiar with how the cuisine is usually prepared. He had the nerve to tell me that those people are from Canada, so they make it differently. Right. Chinatown had it wrong, but Mamaroneck had it on lock? Got it. Or was he saying that Mister Chen was from Canada? The outside sign says "Authentic Chinese Cuisine". Not Authentic Canadian Cuisine. But if it turns out that I misread it, that would explain a lot. Bottom line, I will not be returning here. It's not hard to get to NYC for actual authentic cuisine. But to be honest, there are much better places, even in Westchester. Try Aberdeen Seafood at the hotel in White Plains. They have amazing AUTHENTIC Chinese food with an excellent dim sum selection and an attentive, knowledgeable staff. And they don't charge $19 for a plate of veggies. But Mister Chen does seem like the local childcare center for the neighborhood, so definitely bring the kids. They can do whatever they want here while you relax. I just won't be there to see it. read more

Ordered takeout, the timing on a Thursday night was great, was only a 30 minute wait. Ordered sesame chicken, red bean cake and pork soup dumplings. Dumplings were not as great as if they had been fresh, my issue was that they were shoved on top of each other so once you picked one up it ripped the dough causing all of the delicious soup to pour out! If this isn't able to be delivered it should be mentioned or more care should be taken with packaging it. Red bean crust was flaky and dry. Visited Glen Island Park for a day trip and decided to pick up food on my way home. We chose this place at random after googling their raving reviews and it indeed lived up to them. It's a very good Chinese food restaurant. It felt and tasted very upscale, price to match though. Each dish was around $20+ I had the Szechuan chicken with veggies. This was great. The veggies still had some crisp to them, the chicken was juicy and the sauce wasn't too spicy. The one thing I didn't like however, was the excessive amount of pimento seeds in the dish. Those things are horrible to just bite on. I wish they would've removed these before serving. My husband had the Kung Pao chicken, he was a big fan of. It was cooked well, not greasy at all and had great flavor. Overall, this was a great take-out food spot and everything was packaged well. Still piping hot by the time we got home (30 minute drive) Also portioned well, I finished this over two days, having some for lunch the next day. Which I must say, was even better than the first bite. We would definitely stop by here again whenever we are in the area. The town of Pelham NY has three Chinese restaurants - one that was mediocre, one that is not too good, and one that is awful. Naturally, the mediocre restaurant closed, leaving Pelhamites with one not-too-good and one truly bad Chinese restaurant. Time to range farther. The main drag of Mamaroneck NY -- which is perhaps 15-20 mins away - is filled with interesting restaurants (oh, Pelham, why can you not emulate Mamaroneck's example...?). And so we decided to try Mister Chen. It was a revelation. I am not saying the food was sublime or transcendant; however, it was solidly good, and just hitting that bar was a joy to us. Every dish at Mr. Chen was tasty: dumplings, fried calamari, sesame chicken, eggplant in garlic sauce - all good. Yes, it's a pretty long drive for take-out, but it's worth it. Pelhamites... Rejoice! I had bookmarked Mister Chen a couple of months back when it popped up as hot and new on my Yelp feed. I'm always down for trying a new Asian restaurant, so I told myself if I found myself in the area I would check it out. Lo and behold, I found myself in Mamaroneck tonight and thought it was a perfect excuse to grab some dinner here. Mister Chen sits on Mamaroneck Ave in the main strip of the town of Mamaroneck. I didn't even realize before I got here that the space was formerly the location of Haiku; I had been there before and must say they did a great job transforming the space. It's not huge, but the brightish colors cast against the darker tables and chairs make for an interesting color scheme. The menu is broken down how I expected one at an Asian restaurant would be (apps, proteins, noodles, etc). We decided to start with two apps: the soup dumplings and the pan fried pork buns. Both of these were pretty good; I've had better soup dumplings elsewhere but they weren't awful. I liked the pork buns more - they had good flavor and the ratio of bun to meat was on point. For my main I had the salt and pepper prawns; they were advertised as giant prawns and they definitely delivered on size. The shells were kept on which made the prawns really crispy, and they were seasoned with salt and pepper really well. The one thing that was missing (for me at least) was some kind of sauce - especially in light of the fact that the dish was served with rice. Overall it had flavor but was dry. Service was fine - not amazing but the food was served at a good pace which is the best I can expect sometimes. Overall, I kind of got that "more of the same" feel from Mister Chen. The food was good, but there are places like this all over Westchester so I wasn't blown away. I probably won't be back soon because of other options closer to me, but for locals who want a nice meal this is a good option. read more

We used to order from here consistently for two years. Quality of food has gone down. Yesterday - they delivered Singapore noodles- there was a clump of curry power in the middle, not mixed. The kung pao tofu had no sauce, no peanuts, just fried pieces of tofu with unseasoned broccoli. When we called to complain, we were she said "ok we will do better next time." We said to at least look up our order number so they would know what went wrong. She put the phone on speaker without realizing it wasn't on mute and then said "these guys are calling to complain" and her coworker goes "just hang up on them" We used to recommend this place as the go to Chinese spot in this area. I am a big fan of Asian foods. I eat them often at restaurants and I cook Szechuan and Thai frequently at home, obtaining authentic and fresh ingredients at Asian markets. This is a very nice restaurant. The ambiance is airy and clean, the staff are very friendly and the food is very good. The dumplings are excellent, especially the soup dumplings and the kung pao chicken was well-prepared although not as spicy as I expected. All in all, four of us had a very good meal in a very comfortable restaurant. My only real criticism is the salt and pepper squid is not even remotely close to what this traditional Szechuan dish should be. What is being offered as salt and pepper squid is just plain, and not particularly good, fried calamari. Salt and pepper squid, which I have prepared often and ordered frequently in restaurants that offer it, should have an abundance of Szechuan pepper and a fair amount of salt in an otherwise thin coating of corn starch. It should be crispy and very spicy. This dish was neither. It was edible but disappointing. I plan to return next month to try some other interesting dishes on the menu but I'll pass on the salt and pepper squid. Next, they have these awesome dumplings. They put the soup INSIDE the dumplings-- what a trip. Holy cow, they were awesome. The dumpling dough was toothsome and the soup tasty. Definitely try them. Caution--don;t let them sit too long since the soup gets cold. If your dining with a chatty Kathy or loquacious Larry, put your index finger to your pursed lips and ask them to pipe down for a few minutes so you can enjoy these while their hot. Next, the fried dumplings. Oh my. No it the Costco hackneyed fare; but these were longer and more savory. Really quite good. The spare ribs were special,they were from the caudad ribs and not the usual ribs I was accustomed to. They had a small bone--seemingly a vertebrae, and an appendage of meat. Be it as I was--hungry, these were gulletted with highly directed focus. They were awesome. The meat was tender, the sauce as delectable as I have every had, but not smothering. The sticky rice. Hmmm. Well, they had some meat mixed in that was really not necessary, but was really dry.
