I have come to Black Jet a handful of times now (only because Bernal is so far from the Sunset!) and have had amazing experiences and pastries every time. If you need a cake for a special occasion or coffee / pastries for a cozy morning you can't go wrong here. For Mother's Day I preordered their Celebration Vanilla Buttercream Cake with Black Lockett Floral. I've ordered bday and holiday cakes before so I had high expectations, but this cake was gorgeous! A show stopper fit for the amazing moms in our lives. The devils food base was moist and rich and paired perfectly with the salted vanilla buttercream. My family compared it to an upscale Oreo hehe... It also made my mom feel so special which is all you can ask for. 10/10! If you're preordering there is no special express line, and the shop can be busy, so keep that in mind if you're in a rush. I usually end up grabbing more pastries and a coffee while in line so it's win-win for me. The shop also has a small selection of cute merch, cards, sprinkles and other assorted gift items handy for picking up on your way to a party. Definitely one of my favorite bakeries, especially when I'm looking for a crowd pleasing cake. Highly recommend repeat visits as their menu is constantly rotating with the seasons. Cute small neighborhood bakery I had heard good things about! Tried their fruit danish and béchamel and mushroom pizza slice. Both were good, the danish I believe is seasonal so they change out the fruit and I got plum which was pretty sour but the rest of the danish was good. Loved the mushroom focaccia Detroit style pizza slice - it is sourdough, which we didn't realize so would've preferred regular focaccia but was moist and I loved the crispy cheese and mushrooms! Had to come try their homemade Oreos. They come chilled and while I don't love a cold cookie I understand why after I let mine sit out. The cream is delicious and soft but can squish out of the cookies if not cool. I enjoyed it regardless the cookies were thick and crispy with the black cocoa really shining through. I have loved every visit to this Bernal Heights gem. I go with something in mind, end up with something totally different, and am always very pleased. Yesterday was a last minute trip when the wine I was taking to dinner didn't arrive on time. Even last minute, I was able to get a chocolate pecan pie which was literally the hit of the evening meal. I was doing a little food tour for myself of the Bernal Heights area. I stumbled upon this tiny bakery on Cortland. Upon walking in you you are greeted warmly by the staff and presented with some beautiful pastries. Everything looked wonderful, but I had to try a slice of their pumpkin pie and their PB and J cookie sandwich. Black Jet had no seating so I took my pastries and found a nearby bench. I found the PB&J cookie sandwich to be really good, but a little too sweet. Their pumpkin pie was amazing. It had a very soft texture and the flavors were perfect. Really enjoyed the pastries here. The morning bun was the best I've ever had, flaky on the top and sticky with cinnamon sugar on the bottom. The ham & cheese croissant was also excellent, flaky and lots of flavor inside. The only downside is they aren't able to heat up the pastries you order, so will be room temperature unless you take them home. It is a small spot with no seating, order at the counter and get your goodies to-go. The pastries are made in-house so you can ask the staff more about the pastries if you are so inclined. Cute neighborhood bakery with a variety of pastries and other baked goodies. Storefront is pretty small, making it more of a grab and go type of spot. I came on a weekday afternoon a couple hours before closing and they still had a good selection of items to choose from. I tried one of their Oreos ($3.75 for 1), a ham and cheese croissant ($6), and a Pop-Tart ($6). The Oreo biscuit was decadent and chocolatey with a bit of saltiness to balance out the sweetness. It was crumbly, but still held up its integrity with every bite. The vanilla cream in the middle was very reminiscent of the classic Oreo filling. The ham and cheese croissant was buttery and flakey, as all good croissants should be. The salty ham paired well with the rich creamy cheese. The addition of mustard also added a nice tang. The real star of the show was the Pop-Tart. I forgot to ask the cashier what flavor the Pop-Tart was for the day, but I believe it was grape. The pastry was flakey and dense. It was filled generously with a sweet and tart grape filling, and topped with a purple grape glaze. A delightfully elevated take on a nostalgic childhood snack. 4.5 stars for sure. For a very small, unassuming storefront, these baked goods are excellent. Who would have thought that an almond croissant would pair so well with apricot jam? Or, that a pistachio cookie would as well? Black Jet did apparently. The only downside is the pricing. $7.50 for a small square slice is pretty steep, but I'll be back. This was my first time at Blackjack Bakery and I can already tell it's going to be my new weekend spot. I came in during the Saturday morning rush and even with the line the service was super friendly and fast. I ordered the Pop-Tart and the Ham Breakfast Sandwich and both were amazing. The Pop-Tart brought back so much nostalgia while still feeling fresh and elevated. The blueberry lemon filling was incredible. My boyfriend even said it reminded him of his grandma's scones which made it feel even more special. Now the Ham Breakfast Sandwich... that might honestly be my favorite breakfast sandwich in the whole city. The folded egg was perfect, the ham was delicious, the cheese melted just right, and the bread was unreal. I don't think I've ever had bread that good before. I happened to be in the neighborhood on a Saturday morning and, having heard good things about it, decided to give Black Jet a try. Laminated pastries, pains au chocolat in particular, are usually my test of a good bakery and, despite being tempted by the regular croissant, I decided to try the chocolate braid. Generally I don't like it when bakeries stray from the classic pain au chocolat style (seriously, just keep it simple) and unfortunately this proved to be the case here. The pastry was dry and chewy, definitely not flaky - even on a very humid and foggy SF day - and the chocolate drizzled on the outside just gets all over your hands or the paper bag. It was so chewy that it seemed as if it hadn't been baked fresh which, if true, would seem a bit strange for a Saturday morning. It could just have been an off day, but overall a total miss. There were other things I liked the look of. My friend had the morning bun, which looked decent but they didn't say much about whether it was great or not. The danishes and fruit pies also looked appealing. I do want to go back and try other things on the menu here but unfortunately it won't be for the main reason I usually patronize bakeries and therefore won't be a go-to. read more

Crumbly with some lovely crispy edges, just sweet enough from the fruit to carry the pastry, but not overly so. It was not as moist/buttery as I wish it was, definitely felt like I could have used a cup of coffee or milk to wash it down. Still much better than most scones , which I find almost inedible without a drink. Honestly weren't too many other pastries at the time that caught my eye, so not sure how fast I'll be back. Black Jet is my favourite local bakery in the Bernal/Glen Park/Noe Valley area. Most things here are good and some things are exceptional and I would go out of way to come here to get. My favourites first and foremost are the banana bread and the coffee cake. The crust that they get on the outer layer is what really makes these special. I also really like the pizza and the cardamom snail which is served in the weekends. The cookies and cupcakes here are also It's a grab and go situation as there isn't any seating in the store but you can find a bench in the neighbourhood area to sit and eat your goodies. read more

I threw a party where we did a blind taste test of the sourdough bread from different famous SF bakeries. The winner (no shocker) was Tartine, but Black Jet's "bernal bread" came in second! And it costs $9 to Tartine's $15. Most other things at the bakery are decent if not amazing, and I really like the veggie egg sandwich (tho it was a lot easier to justify when it cost $6 not $9). However, 3 stars not 4 because they have one of the most obnoxious setups I've ever seen. There is no pricing displayed for any of the pastries! If you want to know what something costs you have to ask. This kind of "if you have to ask you can't afford it" attitude is so insufferable. If the sourdough weren't so good I would never go, and I skip all the pastries on principle when I do. read more

Nice people. Great food. I live right by here. The smell gets to me every day! Butter, sugar, chocolate! OMG! The owner and manager are sweet people. This is a small, local, community-rooted business. I offer them my driveway when they get deliveries. Places like this make me feel real. The bread and sweets are to die for. I was visiting a friend in Bernal Heights and they said I HAD to visit Black Jet. I'm so glad I did. It's a really cute to-go bakery (there's no tables). They're known for their take on a pop-tart, and it's for good reason. I loved Pop Tarts as a kid but don't eat them as an adult. I was skeptical but it was so good! I got the strawberry Pop Tart, it's flaky and the filling was amazing. I also had the everything snail which is a huge pastry with cream cheese mixed into the dough and everything seasoning on top, it was really good. Lastly, I had the nectarine cream cheese danish, also really good. I had to stop myself from getting anything else, everything looked so good. The staff were very friendly and helpful when I asked them questions. They do sell out of some things, so it's best to get there earlier if you can. The shop is off of a main road, so parking in front isn't always available, you may have to circle to find a spot. I can't wait to go back and try some more of their amazing pastries. read more

The breakfast sandwich was pretty solid, decently filling, didn't love the bread after being toasted and the sauce didn't come through much on the spinach one. I rolled into Black Jet Baking with a few friends at the beginning of our Bike Feast show ride. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we loaded up on pastries. I chose the Buckwheat financier which is basically half a peach in a buckwheat cupcake. Personally this was my favorite treat of the morning as the muffin part is not sweet, complemented by the fruit. It is a substantial portion as big as my hand that I shared with friends. I split the fig ricotta pastry with a friend; it was the most beautiful looking pastry of them all but the ricotta was super sweet. Best for those with a serious sweet tooth. The crust was deliciously flakey. Lastly, the blackberry scone is a Jet Black Baking classic - though dusted in sugar it is not overly sweet and the blackberries give it a nice kick. It's big enough to share or if you're feeling especially hungry keep it for yourself. As pictured in the display case they also serve sourdough pizza by the slice, Sicilian / Detroit style. I tried a bite of my friend's plain cheese slice and we both agreed it's pretty good for sour dough - not traditional style. My ignorance about baking is showing again. I had presumed Black Jet referred to some artisan baking technique that came out of Le Cordon Bleu. No, it turns out that Black Jet comes from the nickname of the owner's Black Labrador. Black Jet's owner, both the dog and the bakery, is Gillian Shaw Lundgren, who founded her business in 2010 and built her presence in the city through office deliveries, restaurants, and catering companies. After scaling Bernal Heights Park, I trundled down the hill in a valiant effort to make it by their 2PM closing time. I don't trundle for just anybody because I heard their pies were world-class. I was hoping they had a handheld version for piglets like myself. Alas, I shouldn't have been surprised that their inventory of baked goods was down to a precious few. A lovely bakery in Bernal Heights serving most of the standards (cakes and croissants) but is better-known for a handheld pie shaped like a Pop Tart (filled with seasonal fruit and often glazed). It's actually too big to fit in a toaster, but it really is very good. This is a takeout spot that moves efficiently. Service is quick. I've had their cupcakes before and they are delicious. This review is for their Banana Cream pie, which was tasty but could be better. My main complaints are that the crust is paper thin at the bottom, so you don't get much flaky goodness, but then on the sides and at the top it's way too thick, so that it's hard to bite into. I would love a flakier, buttery-er crust. Probably my favorite part of this pie was the chocolate they sprinkled on top, which was delicious. read more

Do yourself a favor, and GET THE MORNING BUN!!! We were in the neighborhood to grab coffee and saw people lining up around the corner, so of course we had to see what everyone was in line for. PASTRIES. We got the morning bun, almond croissant, lemon cardamom snail, and everything snail. By far, the morning bun was our favorite. If you love churros, this one is for you. It's is so cinnamony, coupled with the fact that the bread is light and fluffy at the same time. The almond croissant was also pretty good! It's the first time I've seen actual almond inside instead of just almond paste, so it gives a nice crunch to every bite! It's a nice place to grab some coffee and pastry for walking throughout the neighborhood and checking out the stores! Parking is also easy to find, plenty of meter parking on Cortland Street.
