You can see into the restaurant through the giant picture windows and glass door. It's a modern decor Korean restaurant with lots of natural light. Simple yet elegant is the feeling you get as you enter the restaurant. It's street parking or you can park in a free lot then walk over. The staff here is very friendly and on it when refilling water. They check on you throughout the course of your meal to ensure you're enjoying the food and to see if you need anything else. The 1 star is for an employee, NOT the food. It's one of my favorite place to eat in Walnut Creek. We ate there 2 days ago. We paid the bill, and I waited right outside the entrance door while my husband went to the bathroom. While waiting outside, the older woman (duty mgr?) came out with the little black tray that holds the bill. She points to the empty tray and asks me where's the receipt. I told her we already paid, then she goes back inside. She could have first asked the wait staff about the receipt, instead of questioning me. After our first foray into Korean cuisine, I was hankering for another taste. I was excited about surprising my baby with a visit to Mixed Grain since they're related to Bowl'd Korean in Albany, that I've had bookmarked for awhile now. Being located in Walnut Creek, it's a little more upscale than your usual KBBQ location. The menu is also a bit more American diner friendly, using names like "Rice Bowl" and "Sizzling Works" with the Korean term next to it. Along with all that added attention to detail, comes a slight price increase as well. Even still, it's quite affordable for what you get. While not as fancy as other restaurants in the neighborhood such as Havana, Mixed Grain is quite contemporary in appearance. If I didn't know better, which I don't, I would assume this used to be a sushi place. Everything was going well with the service until the waitress began to crack an egg over our Tofu Dolsot Bibimbop. Whoa whoa, whoa! I'm glad my girl caught it in time before she ruined our dish. So I've had Korean food before, but I was basically thrown into the fire and people were too busy to educate me on the basics. Other places I've tried had time but didn't really bother. Plus, some restaurants lacked English menus. Enter mixed grain, an establishment that may or may not be the best place to start (shit man, I don't know), but they were nice enough to explain a few things to me. I opted for "The Works" (bibimbap) which is a bowl of spinach, mushrooms, julienned carrots, pickles, cucumber, pickled daikon, fried egg, your choice of protein, and your choice of rice. Protein options include beef, chicken, or more vegetarian friendly items like tofu. I ended up with the spicy pork. Furthermore, you can choose white rice or Mixed Grain's purple rice which is a special blend of sweet brown, wild sweet, wild. Definitely go with the purple. It wasn't long before one of the guys stopped by my table with soup and an assortment of side dishes and patiently explained to me what each one was. I was overjoyed, especially when I learned of the free refills! Then the bibimbap arrived. It looked too damn nice to eat or mix up with their sauce...but I had to. The spicy pork was flavorful. Veggies were fresh and delicious. Sauce was solid. That purple rice tho...was something else. I liked the unique flavor and sticky/chewy texture that it had. As much as I am not a noodle or ramen type eater( mainly for carb watching reasons) this place may have well just brought me over to the noodle side, for my GOD, this ramen was awesome! It was one of those rainy, cloudy, dreary kind of days...one of those days that marry hot savory food just beautifully... and this grain thankfully happen to accommodate my soul comforting desire perfectly. Mixed grain is located off Bonanza st, sandwiched between a handful of little restaurants and shops, and just a door down from X treme pizza. The food Gods were looking out for me this day, for I managed to get a parking spot right in front. The actual place is small, but seems to have plenty of seating. The place was also quite scarce of people with only one or two other couples dining in. The menu is quite basic, providing a decent, but less extensive selection of ramens, soups, appetizers and entrees. They also offer wine, beer and some specialty Korean cocktails. I was greeted and assisted by one of the lady server's, who turned out to be an absolute sweetheart! She helped me a ton, by answering a handful of questions for my clueless ramen self, that eventually lead me into the direction of ordering the best dish to suit my palate. I was also in a cocktail kind of mood, and ended up going with one of their Soju cocktails. Its a Korean Vodka, with variety of flavors to add. I chose the lemon. ($6.00) It arrived in a wine glass looking delish; and which it certainly turned out to be-light, sweet and refreshing For my main dish, I ordered the Spicy Ramen. You can request it mild, spicy, or super spicy. I ordered it mild. I also added chicken for an additional $2.00. The soups, and perhaps main dishes, comes with a variety of Korean specialty little dishes. I engaged in most of them, which were for the most part, were all pretty good. Now for the grand entrance for the Ramen? Breathtaking! Sizzling hot, breathtaking! My mouth has never watered that much over a bowl of ramen...ever! And, after allowing it to cool down, the mixture of flavors and components that made up this fabulous soup, imploded into an abundance of savory, out this world, tasty wonderfulness! Boom! SIZZLING WORKS SALMON BOWL, FOR THE WIN After a hair appointment lasting several hours that ended at 3 p.m., I headed off on foot through downtown Walnut Creek. Mixed Grain was close and caught my eye because I had not been there before. I told my server it was my first time in as I sat down. The young man explained a couple things I had questions about on the menu, and then I ordered the Sizzling Works ($13), with the mixed grain rice option, and salmon for the meat (extra $3) . He brought me hot tea while I waited, and then several small dishes. He explained what each one was as he presented them. They were all delicious but a sweetly fried potato ended up being my favorite. When the bowl of Sizzling arrived, he helped me again by asking if I knew how to mix it. I said no. He busted the yolk of the egg that sat on top of a pile of veggies, rices, and salmon. He then added hot sauce (it wasn't super hot so I had him put half in, but I ended up added the other half not long after). He gave the dish back to me once it had been mixed and said that I could soon scrape the rice off the bottom and it would be crunchy. My hot tea was delicious but the hot Sizzling bowl was amazing. It was really, really good. And a huge portion. I was starved - it was mid-afternoon and I hadn't even eaten breakfast yet. This was my lunch (though, they stop serving lunch at 2 so this was technically a dinner menu). I will absolutely order this again. This is the cutest little Korean eatery! But it's not as if I just care about looks, its personality is great too! :) (i.e. the food is delicious). I seriously love everything about this place, from the atmosphere (clean, casual, cozy and café-like) to the décor (think small wooden tables à la dining hall cafeteria) to the food! Let's discuss the atmosphere and food in more detail. When you first walk in, the ambiance is coolly casual; small wooden tables and a brightly lit, arid space encourage you to have a quick lunch rather than a leisurely dinner. This also causes you to make assumptions about the food: quick? to-go? for the uber-hip lunch set? Probably not the most amazing Korean food you'll ever have, you start to figure. You will also notice that there are a lot of signs touting their latest specials, popular items and an awful lot of hype surrounding purple rice! I mean, purple rice is great and all...but what's with all the hoopla? Well, it turns out that all the hype (their slogan is "purple is the new brown" after all lol) is because their purple a.k.a mixed grain rice is made particularly well and very flavorful! We even chose it in our kimbap and it added something special, a new twist on an already common Korean dish. We also got fried rice rolls (yum) and japchae to share. Everything was on point and uber delicious, which surprised me to no end because 1) its small size and express café vibe deceived me of its quality 2) it's on a busy street in downtown Walnut Creek--not exactly the most diverse of places. Although we got the food to-go and enjoyed it picnic style since my friend was late for her appointment to try on wedding dresses, the to-go containers did nothing to detract from the taste and we still appreciated it just fine; which makes me think the food would be even better sitting down! It was actually kind of nice to eat it with champagne since we celebrated after my friend chose a dress! I suppose this place is chalk full of surprises and a prime example that you should not judge a book by its cover--even if that cover paints a positive picture of cleanliness and refinement. I came in with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the dolsot with purple rice and thinly sliced beef. It's interesting having the option of purple rice---I've never had that in stone bowls before! It didn't make too much of a difference for me personally. The beef was tender and flavorful, yay!!! The size was pretty small though. At least smaller than I'm used to??? I'm not sure if it was lunch portions. My friends got some chicken wings to share, and they were super good! I love the sweetish sourish sauce that Korean fried chicken uses. They were fried crispy to the outside, but the chicken remained juicy inside. I would definitely get this again. Best thing here, the sizzling works. The heat of the bowl continues to cook the rice and makes its crunchy, which I like. I always order the pork even though its too spicy for me. I get the purple rice because it actually makes me eat purple rice which is healthier (I think). I also hate vegetables but I'll eat them if they are in this little mix. They also serve you bonchon, or those little side dishes like potatoes, sprouts, kimchi, kale. For drinks, I always have the pear juice. I've never had this anywhere else, but it is so damn good. They also have some ice cream items for sale if you want a mini dessert. They can accommodate large parties and can get busy. Be forewarned: they say us in the middle of the restaurant and if it's cold outside the wind when the door opens will hit you right in the back. I paid by card and left a 20% tip only to be followed outside by a frantic server asking me to return the signed copy of the receipt. I didn't take the paper and she didn't say it nicely. No doubt, it blew off the table when the door was opened just like the second copy I went and signed. I didn't appreciate being made to feel like I was stealing. TLDR: I love coming here for really satisfying Korean Comfort food with a twist. I go to Mixed Grain every once in a while when I'm craving Korean food. I usually will get a sundubu, or noodle dish, while my boyfriend likes the ginseng chicken. Their main entrees are not bad, but their banchan is what keeps bringing me back. I haven't tried that many different dishes here because I don't like committing to an entire entree that may or may not be any good. I went there with a big group and ate family style so I able to try more dishes than usual. The vegetable rolls with purple rice were really good, and the entire group really liked the short ribs. Service there was really good as usual. They were able to get us seated very quickly even though we had a big group (7 people). They even offered to move us over when a new, bigger table opened up so we would have more table space for our food. I'm a huge fan of Korean food. To give some perspective, it means that if all I had were Korean food for the rest of my life, I will be okay (as long as it's lighter sodium and not as spicy). Shh. It's not a foodie thing to say, so don't tell anyone. I was craving Kim Chi Fried Rice, especially since I had some that was 'pretty bomb' in the last couple of days. I really wanted to try Mixed Grain, especially after seeing countless people check-in nearby. It used to be Koreana Kitchen, and although I was slightly sad that it changed, I can now say I welcome it. The staff won me over. Super friendly. Very attentive. Constantly asking if I needed refills. Honestly, I had barely even made a dent, in my food, and I was already satisfied from all the side dishes they offered. Despite telling them no, they kindly gave me fresh potatoes (I think it's one of their harder-to-make)... And it was beautiful - fresh, hot, and i was extremely happy to have received it. Honestly, it was the best service I've had in a while. The food was a little more salty than my preferred taste (though I'm Canto, which means a more bland and mild palate), but it was perfect. Perfect mix of grains, meat, Kim chi, egg, sauce. I really appreciated how it was prepared. I ended up paying $20 for my rice and a glass of Korean Pomegranate Juice (which they put it in a cool looking mason jar). This place is perfectly reasonable when it comes to the price... Especially since the $20 was after a 25% tip. And they don't stuff you with a lot of fillers (rice) just to fill you up. It's the perfect amount and ratio. I'll definitely be back. Excellent food, service, cleanliness, etc. The food was amazingly delicious. I loved the "mixed grain" purple rice they had. It went well in my sizzling Bibimbop pot I got. I love that they offer tofu for your Bibimbop as well. Probably the first time I didn't have to special request that addition to my vegan bowl. I was also happy because the waiter was very attentive when I told him I didn't want almonds in anything of mine (because I'm allergic.) The kimbop was good too. Purple is the new brown, mix like crazy! I love he phrases on the servers tshirts. My coworkers and I came on a Monday night around 8pm for dinner. It wasn't very crowded but don't let that fool you as this place is really good for Korean food. As a fellow Korean myself, I liked the variety, unlimited refill and quality of the Korean side dishes. The friendliness of all the server staff, attentiveness from them and their excellent customer service. As for food, we got the seafood and kimchi pancake as appetizers. I was surprised they cut up the pancake into squares versus what I'm used to where he pancake is a circle and sliced into pizza like slices. They were pretty good and the slices were very filling. As my coworkers says, the bonchon was nom nom! I ordered the dol sot (hot stone bowl) with salmon. It was flavorful, filling and delicious. Much of my life experience with Korean food has been like a relationship on its last leg. I would sit in front of a bowl of fatty meat, rice and pickled veggies and say "It's not you Korea bowl, it's ME." - but we all know it really was Korea bowl. I just never had GOOD Korean food. Having lived in LA for the better part of a year, I finally had great Korean food. So when I moved back to the Bay Area, I was a little worried about where I was going to get my Spicy BBQ pork fix. That's when Mixed Grains came into my life. My first date with MG came with the gift of unique and tasty side dishes. It was such a surprise I must have blushed. The Sizzling Wok Bowl arrived popping and crackling, I stirred it quickly to cook the sunny-side up egg. I took a small bite and there was an instant spark, love in a flash. I savored every part of this dish. It was sad to see a table full of empty dishes but our evening together had to come to an end. Giving this a 5 star because it is arguably the best Korean food I had ever had (or pretty darn close). Plus I absolutely loved the mixed grain rice they served here. Food is a little pricey but it is right in the middle of downtown and it isn't much more than the average Korean place (for whatever reason, Korean is pricier than most Asian food). Mixed Grain is a great option for the non-picky Korean. Has your basics, and can do it well. What a place. What a dinner. I came here with my family and I have to say I was very pleased with the experience. Service was very quick and attentive. It took us about less than 10 minutes from sitting down and ordering to the food coming out. I personally ordered the Fire Bird's Nest which the menu expertly warns that it is very spicy. The Fire Bird's Nest is very very very spicy bbq chicken on top of a bed of rice and a fried egg cooked in a mini cast-iron skillet. The rice gets crispy on the bottom. Now I have no problem with spicy food. I love spicy food, and yet today I was beaten by this dish. It has great flavor, the chicken is fantastic and the kick the spicy kick is truly amazing. It was so spicy that I couldn't eat consecutive bites. In between each bite of rice and chicken I needed to have water, other side dishes, just random bits of food to act as a buffer. I was actually surprised at how far I got. So fair warning. It looks and tastes amazing, it just hurts. We also ordered the rice cake soup with beef dumplings and that was superb as well. If you try the Fire Bird's Nest, I highly recommend you share it with a group of people, preferably with those who have a good heart and can stand mind-numbing burning. read more

Environment "Korean food in Walnut Creek?" That's what I thought to myself when my friend had mentioned this place. It's a small little restaurant, but it looks new inside and its very clean. Food At the start of the meal they brought over all the side dishes, and will refill on request. For my main meal, I ordered a rice bowl dolsot. Dolsot is when it comes in the hot sizzling bowl, and the bowl keeps your food warm, which I really enjoy. Also, the rice is crispier at the bottom. Along with it, I got their signature purple rice, which is their mixed grains. For protein, I got chicken. All in all, a simple concept, but the vegetables on top were evidently fresh and I quite enjoyed the meal! Service Waiters were very friendly and helpful as I was ordering. read more

There was a food contest in my mouth tonight and the Chicken Wings won! Oh my goodness, these are the best wings I've ever had. So crispy, perfectly cooked, juicy meat and the sauce was so amazing. I can hardly stand to say that this is the first time I tried them. My wife ordered them but I Bogarted a few. Next time it's my order. She also ordered the steamed beef dumplings. They won second place in the food contest in a very close race. I had the Korean Noodles (med spicy) with chicken. So good. The service is always great. Tonight the place was packed with a line outside and the kitchen and front of house worked beautifully. Great job! Did I mention how good the wings were? read more

This is a nice little Korean place in downtown Walnut Creek. They're bright and clean, and their banchan is actually pretty good (our favs being the glazed, fried potato, and the kale salad). Both times we ordered a dolsot bibimbop, but both times the rice never turned crispy, even letting it sit and sizzle for five minutes. It was still yummy, just would order regular bibimbap if there's not going to be a difference in the crispiness. Their seafood pancake is pretty tasty, but expensive for the small portion. Their spicy tofu soup is always satisfying. Overall, if you don't want to venture beyond the Berkeley hills for some authentic Korean, this would hit the spot just well enough. The only con is the portion sizes are a little small, and the prices are a little high. read more

I've been here several times now and I have to say the food is on par with Korean food in LA. I love getting the side dishes. I've had a majority of the items on the list and they're all very delicious. The food has been prepared the same each time, no variation with amount either. The only reason it's a four instead of five is because the service does get a bit hectic when they're crowded and the waiters/waitresses will forget to bring bowls/serving utensils even when asked. Also, sometimes during peak time, dishes have been brought out when everyone else is nearly done eating. (We use the hot food policy in my group). read more
