MJ's is an excellent place to get together with friends and have a few drinks. The bar area is big. A lot of seats and standing room. They have a little sushi place which was pretty good. However, the food is subpar bar food and the service was so-so. But I wouldn't say don't go. It is what it is - a sports bar. I've seen better and I've seen a lot worse. read more

Just had thanksgiving dinner at MJ's Matawan nj. It was a buffet dinner. The food was excellent. The food choices are excellent. Tremendous amount of food that was delicious, something for everyone. Clean,neat restaurant and the servers were on top of everything. Price was excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant not only for thanksgiving but anytime. First of all walked in gave them our name said be 15-20 minutes meanwhile when we get sat down there is 5 tables open no service. No reason for a wait time. Second of all after we get sat takes 10 minutes just to get a waitress. We order our food, my girlfriend has a gluten allergy so she requests a gluten free plain personal pie. Which was good I ordered a penne vodka personal pie. Now tell me how they charge more for the gluten free personal over my penne vodka personal. Then on the bill add a $4 surcharge for the gluten pie. No where does it say they charge you $4 more on top of the original price for the pie. Not too happy on how they handle things over there. Stop in on a regular basis and sit in the bar area. Bartender service is never good. Pizza isn't bad. Went Monday night to watch the NY Ranger game. It wasn't as crowded as I expected. Plenty of empty seats at bar. Sat down planning to have a few beers and a burger while I watched the game. Was there for at least 15 minutes. 3 bartenders were right by me. Let me start with the fact that the music volume is way to loud. It kind of pierces your ear drum and the bass is crazy too. MJ's is a very predictable sports bar and grill. If you're looking for a sports bar experience with very mediocre and overpriced food, then you should come here. If the food were at least a few dollars cheaper, it would be worth it. For the few times I have been here, I've tried: the pasta fagioli soup (tastes like Progresso can soup), the linguine with clams (was just a-ok), and the cheese pizza (decent but not worth the price). It has an amazing view of a lake, it has a deck and garden in the back for pictures or just to relax after dinner. The food is good and everyone is very friendly. If you're looking for a good place to have dinner and drinks I would definitely recommend MJ's! I came on a Saturday and my party had to wait about a half an hour which sucked, but we expected it. I liked having the option of sitting in the bar with the casual atmosphere or the dining room with a more formal feel to it. We sat in the bar and were served immediately. Came in with a large group (with a reservation) on a Sunday. There were a number of parties going on below the main restaurant area that made it very loud for our meal. (Soundproofing not so much). The menu is relatively large, but you need to be careful as their special menu and regular menu often have nearly identically named and priced items, but they are very different from each other. The service was fine on our last visit - as I said it was a large group of about 20 people, but there was also at least one other large table in the server's area and a bunch other patrons. A little help for the waitress probably wouldn't have hurt. Overall, a nice lunch out with the family. read more

I'm always in MJ's of Matawan, I love the bar the best, I eat right at the bar and enjoy talking with the other customers and of course the bartenders. Ricky is my main man! He's very friendly and knows what I drink! My problem is I don't see him anymore, I hope he's on vacation, but it's been a while! Other people feel the same! If Ricky is not there anymore, I don't think I'll be there anymore either! We had a great friendship going, always talking, laughing and he advised me on the menu and offered me a new drink he was making! I'll try once again and ask for a manager, if Ricky is gone then I'll be gone too....I'm not alone in my feelings. Others have said the same thing to me! I'm a gluten free gal for the past year. Not by choice but for allergy reasons. But I do love pizza. If I want really good pizza, I get the real thing, not g.f. and suffer for the next four or five days. My husband and I went to MJ's for a late lunch today. I asked if they had any g.f. pasta. Bartender checked and came back and said they did not (boo hiss) but did make a g.f. pizza. I've only had two other g.f. pizzas - one in San Fran and the other in Wilmington, DE and they were nasty, so I was reluctant. Pleasant surprise, the g.f. margarita pizza was THE best. Do over do over do over.... My husband had penne broccoli rabe and sausage. He liked his entre too. We will be back!!! read more

I don't think it rates so few stars. I'd say 3.5 to 4 stars. I've been here about a dozen times in the last year. The pizza is surprisingly really good. Great steak salad. Sandwiches are tasty. Delicious wings. Pulled pork taco appetizers. Great specials on Sundays during football season. There are times when the music is way too loud. Also, there are times when the staff is too chummy with their tables (not when they come to mine, but often they'll be at the table next to mine with their friends or boyfriend and I hate hearing all of their loud complaints.....especially when I need another drink). The entire wait staff has a real clique-ish vibe. I realize all restaurants have cliques, but most can hide it from the diners. We do prefer to sit in the bar area, and I'm sure if we were at the tables on the water side it'd be easier to avoid. Have been to the brunch buffet. Not a fan. There is also a back area that is family friendly, overlooking beautiful views (seriously, I know that might be hard in the middle of suburbia NJ). Food was phenomenal! I ordered 6 wings for $5.99 and the sauce I got was garlic parmisian. They were so good! Of course I had to share them and everyone agreed that they were the bomb! For dinner I ordered pecan crusted salmon with pistachios and it came with a yummy ragout. For dessert I got the apple cinnamon crunch which came with ice cream, warm apples, crunch stuff, almonds and cinnamon. Delish! Well,...Went here for Mother's Day brunch. Very disappointing. First off the entire place is in need of renovation and a cleaning. For the $39.99 ea person they charged they don't even include coffee or an initial mimosa. Mcloone's which is 1000 times better (same price) incudes coffee and a choice of mimosas or Bloody Mary and a spectacular buffet including clams, oysters and shrimp. This buffet was in a very dark area of the bar. The offerings were limited and not desirable-and the presentation was way off and amateurishly done. The wait staff was too busy chatting in the corner to be bothered with any guests. I even had too chase my waitress down to pay the bill. No refills of water - never asked if we need anything and they have the nerve to add a 20% service charge to the bill and leave space on check for additional gratuity. Really? Needless to say we won't be returning. Do yourself a favor if your on rt 34 and looking for a place to eat drive a little further south to Huddys in Colts Neck for a great meal in a brand new setting. read more

Very poor experience! However, i must admit this is about my 5th visit and this is the first time its been poor. But this one changed my feelings about the place. I went with a group of 4 people at about 8pm on a Tuesday night. We got a booth by the bar. Drinks came slightly slow. Dinner was a disaster. It was Taco Tuesday night and two of us ordered the tacos. The other 2 got regular sandwiches. After 25-30 minutes or so 3 of the meals came out. Missing was one of the taco dinners. Another ten minutes go by and still we dont have the final taco dinner. Our waiter has yet to return to give us an update. At this point i go to the hostess and ask her who our waiter is and to let him know we no longer wanted the missing taco dinner. She rolls her eyes and says she doesnt know who our waiter is.... our table was 5 feet from her desk.. perhaps if she wasn't staring at her phone every second she would've known who our waiter was. Furthermore, the 1 person in our party that did receive their taco's was disgusted by them and i actually lucked out by not having to eat them. They had some strange, extra thick white cream/dressing on top. Even if you wanted that you would be unable to taste anything else. Extremely poor service and food. My family of 4 went to the Easter Brunch today and had the last seating at 2pm. This seating was pretty busy and they had the buffet and Easter menu in both levels of the restaurant. We sat promptly and in our group there was my sisters wheelchair. First of all the buffet brunch for today was set up behind back end of the bar where several sectioned off rooms all lead to this area. This was very narrow and older people in walkers, canes and wheelchairs couldn't get through. Very narroW and both sides only allowed 1 person to either pass. The food was good when they actually had the item filled. There were hundred of people here and the brunch is always good and always filled. People paid 37.00 per person plus tip and the food took more than a half hour to refill. People were complaining and asking for the manager. People said they were paying top dollar for Easter Prices and when they made the reservations they were given the seating times available and told they have an hour and half at table. Ok we were fine with that as it was Easter but you cannot have empty dishes on the brunch buffet when your booked solid. Most people that were there requested the buffet from what we could see. I would definitely go back any other day than a holiday for sure and prefer Matawan location over the Spotswood location. The MJ Buttonwood needs to make sure they can accommodate wheelchair access instead of having to go through the kitchen to get in to start and make sure your stocked with food because people live this place. Management was a little frustrated with the customers and a lot were going to write reviews about lack of refilling food. The peel and eat shrimp was not refilled for a good 30 minutes or more and people kept coming back to check and not there. I will go back but not in a holiday And pay that much for lack of food. We would have been better ordering off the regular Easter menu that started at 2pm. read more

this is the old buttonwood manor, with an emphasis on "old". the tables, chairs and especially the carpeting are leftovers from the not-so-glory days of the previous establishment. i wouldn't normally take issue with this but if they didn't want to replace the decades-old carpeting, i just wish they would clean it every once in a while. the place looks (and is) filthy. while the menu is expansive i have a difficult time choosing a meal from the underwhelming list of offerings. and although burgers are usually a safe bet, even those arrive on some kind of strange roll that looks as they were purchased from a factory that produces day-old bread. they are woefully understaffed as is the new normal thanks to the current climate, but i have a feeling this place could never provide excellent service, even in the best of times. be prepared to wait to catch the attention of your server who will disappear to some hidden backspace far from your sight. i am forced to eat here at least four or five times a year much to my disdain, by my family of teenagers who for some reason just can't seem to get enough of this place. the ambiance is not just loud, but overwhelmingly deafening. MJ's is first and foremost a giant bar, serving a rowdy crowd of fat, sloppy drinkers reeking of cigarette smoke and cheaply dressed middle-aged women wearing caked-on makeup leftover from their high school prom just hoping to get "lucky". my expectations of any establishment are really quite simple: it must be clean, with well-prepared, quality food along with pleasant, well-trained staff. having visited most locations of this chain i am surprised they are able to remain in business. given the choice of a night out at MJ's or staying home eating Chinese takeout and cleaning my toilets, the choice is clear. my only dilemma is choosing which jammies to wear. read more

I am new to the are and dined here for the first time with my fiance and his parents on a Thursday evening a few weeks ago. We were promptly greeted and shown to our table, right by the window overlooking the lake. Great view! While we didn't dine in the bar area, it was packed and looked like a good time. We started by ordering their $5 long island drink special- for that price, it was a steal. Tasted great and did the job! We also ordered wings with the chipotle bbq sauce as a started- tasty and the wings were moist. I ordered the flounder po boy. The portion was HUGE! I ate about half and was stuffed. Two large pieces of flounder on a tasty roll. The sauce on it was tasty as well. My fiance ordered "MJs Famous BIg Burger'- 10 ounces of pure deliciousness he said. His father had the shrimp tacos (you get 2 but for a few bucks more you get a third which is what he opted for) and enjoyed them. The best dish of the night that was raved about to friends was one of the specials that night- a prime rib sandwich. His parents said it was the best that they have had. Again, absolutely HUGE portion. We are definitely going to be back to try some other selections! read more

I come here often to the bar and restaurant area. It has a good atmosphere. The food is better than average bar food and there are different specials every night. On one of my last visits the service was the absolute worst I have ever received thanks to Brittany W. She came to take the food order for my husband and I and gave us waters. She then dropped off my husband's appetizer not mine and didn't come back until after our entrees were served. I wanted to order something else but she dropped off more water and ran away. She never checked on us until she dropped off the bill and I had to call after her to make sure she took off my appetizer as I never got it! read more

This place is great. You have the option of sitting in the dining area with a very nice view of the lake or outside by the water if the weather is nice. The food is excellent (including the sushi/sashimi). My only complaint is the service is not on par with the ambiance or food. The service is not terrible but needs to definitly be better since several times there have been long wait periods to be attended to and mix up with food ordered. Can't beat the 2 dollar miller lite they have on tap and their weekly specials. Aside from the specials there isn't much to say about their food. I've had their wings which weren't that bad. I've ordered a medium bacon cheddar burger which sounded great on the menu, but what I received was a dry burger in a stale deli bun with two slices of bacon and one slice of cheese with no chipotle mayo or pickle. The server seemed uninterested and barely passed by to refill our drinks. The only reason I'm upset with this place is because I called at 945 looking to order TAKE OUT and the host said "our kitchen closes at 10."
