So I hate to give a MJS a bad review because the Middletown location has really good food and nice customer service. But I went here on a Thursday afternoon meeting my mother from work so we were on a two hour time limit so you think that would be enough time to have a drink and order some food, now we ordered two cheese burgers and a appetizer. It took the waiter 20 mins just to bring us drinks, then got our appetizer immediately and waited 53 mins exactly to get our burger, I asked to speak to the manager because when I did recieve The burger they were not as we requested them to be, they were rare...and I asked for well done, she said she would make another one and bring it right out, at that point we said no thank you and took the bill and they still charged us for the burger we didn't eat. I HAD to pick a star to be able to post a review but this place gets NO STARS!!! This place is the worst! It stinks like stale alcohol when you walk in, and the "manager" Justin should be fired along with his little opinionated hostess "Keanna" Corporate should fire both of them!! Sitting at the bar with my friend and a server begins to bang a cup on the bar top, we asked him to stop when Justin grabs it and starts banging it louder while he looked right at us! REALLY?!? I asked if he was the manager and he said "YUP" real professional... Keanna decides to throw her opinion into the conversation as if she had any reason to be involved - to which I told her she should keep her mouth shut and not talk to customers like that- but I guess if management doesn't enforce any rules, that's how you'll be treated at MJ's. I am from NH heard this was a spectacular restaurant lots of choices for all This restaurant clearly doing too much bar wedding venue etc waitress distracted had to ask three different people for silverware I ask you what do you think when a customer says nachos chicken on the side? Went here for dinner with a group of seven on Sunday night. I've lived in the area for decades, but this was my first visit since it was called Buttonwood Manor. The lake view from our table on the deck was delightful. The food was just okay. However, the service was really poor. No one even asked if we wanted anything to drink besides water. The entrees took forever to arrive, as did clearing the table. For dessert, our host had purchased a birthday cake from an outside bakery. That also took forever to come out if the kitchen. When it finally arrived, there were no plates, forks, or anything to cut the cake with. That took several more trips to the kitchen. We had to cut the cake with a small serrated knife, not a cake cutter. Coffee also took several trips back and forth to the kitchen. First for coffee, then decaf, then cream, then sugar, then more cream. Also, the coffee was served in styrofoam cups, which I found odd. Getting the check also took a very long time. We were there for 3-1/2 hours for a main dish and dessert. Ridiculous! In addition, there was a health code violation. The outside kitchen entrance and dumpsters are plainly visible from the parking lot. Not too appetizing, but the screen door to the kitchen had a big whole in it which would allow flies and other pests easy access. read more

I had been coordinating with some of the management team and hostesses for weeks prior to this past Saturday. My party of 50 (which turned out to be more like 80) had a blast. This place was jumping Saturday night, good energy, good drinks, reasonably priced food, service was excellent, and the bouncers were super respectful. On attending a banquet the food is good along with the service. However the bar for the banquet charged 6.00 for a bottle of Coors Light while the upstairs main bar charges 2.50 Inquired on why such a difference. Have yet to get a response. So word of advice. I've tried going for some UFC fight nights or just a Friday night and there's always a DJ whos 50 years old and needs to play it at the loudest possible volume because he must wear a hearing aid. Went in for the first time to ask about the Easter buffet. The hostess ignored us standing there so we had to go over and ask for information. She directed us to an office to ask questions. We walked over and there were two woman sitting in an office. The one to the left, younger, pleasant, smiling and very personable. The one to the right, older and grumpy. She acted as if we disturbed her. She answered our questions with a grumpy attitude. We left and don't plan on returning. We have passed this place many times and finally decided to check it out. It's too bad the pleasant woman didn't do the talking, we may have actually made a reservation. Since these food reviews are not so good, better that we didn't. Very skimpy. I ordered a lobster and shrimp bisque soup. It was described in matter to imply a large amount of seafood pieces. (I do not remember the exact wording). There was only 1 piece of shrimp and no lobster meat. I requested it be taken back. The waiter was not surprised. It was brought back to me with 4 or 5 small shrimp, but again with no lobster meat. I decided to type a letter and mail it to them through the postal mail system, explaining my situation. I included my address and phone number. However, there was no response. This shows a lack of respect for their customers, as they clearly take advantage. Besides, if they responded to my letter, this review would never have been written. I wanted to try MJ's as I drive past here often. I should have kept driving. I will not stop in again for a while. The poor or non existent management style will surely put this place out of business. I came in about 4 pm on Wednesday and the place was very slow. I sat at the bar and waited for the bartender to finish her conversation with the other employees before greeting me (about 5 minutes). I was greeted by the bartender who asked what can I get you? I ordered a beer and then she gave me a menu asked me my name and introduced herself (no name tag). She returned with my beer and walked away. After looking thru the menu the bartender came over and I asked if there was a happy hour? She said yes the appetizers where half price and some beers are discounted. I asked what beers? Coors light, Miller, Budweiser. Then I asked what are good appetizers? She said she liked the " Crab cake but they only give you one" then said " they should f***en give you two". I said well give me a minute to decide. I ordered the Chicken questadilla, When my order came I did not have a place setting set up, I waited 5 minutes until she walked by after chatting with the other employees I had to ask for a set up and salt pepper. The food was low quality. They don't give you guacamole but do give you sour cream and peccadillo. The food was bland and tasteless. I quess the shift change is 5 pm because the bartender left, I know this because she said good by 5 times. She wanted me to tip her for the poor service fowl mouth. Two new bartenders came on shift. I asked for a scotch and water back. The new bartender served me the scotch in a very dirty glass. The water glass was very dirty also. She walked to the other side of the bar and the male bartender walked by and I asked for another scotch, the glass was dirty. He walked around the bar twice looking at all the rock glasses and they where all dirty. Do you think he would collect them and wash the glasses? Check the machine to see if soap is empty? NOPE! Just found one and hand washed and poured my scotch. I didn't drink the water either, seems like I was wasting my time. I asked for my check to pay and surprise the appetizer was full price. I brought it to the attention of the bartender and she said the other bartender entered it wrong. Then she said I will discount it for you, I can apply a discount credit to your bill The staff likes to socialize and not work. There was two floor managers on not checking or supervising the staff. This place has no management that cares. Or knows how to operate a restaurant. The women sitting next to me was with a group of 7 people and wanted to order something and the bartender said we don't serve it that way here. Something about large toasted bread? She asked can they make it like they do in Middletown. Bartender said NO the kitchen is very mean and won't accommodate substitutions. WOW the bartender didn't ask the manager or even try, just NO. Then went over and told the other bartender and laughed about the situation. Before leaving I walked into the dining area that had a very strong musky smell and the tables have old covers on them. There are other and better choices in the area. Avoid MJ's Buttonwood Manor!! As far as the food goes I only had the quesadilla and it was OK. I did notice the thin crust pizza uses the same shell as the quesadilla. I was afraid to try anything else because of the sanitary conditions. read more

By far, the worst experience I've had at a restaurant in a long time. I didn't even get a chance to eat, my wife and I were with my young daughter and were sat by the hostess, we literally sat for 15 minutes and were not even greeted. The place was not busy at all but there were a few large parties that seemed to get all the attention. I attempted to speak to a manager but the two knucklehead hostesses said he was busy and then another lady attempted to help but we just left. This building is the old Buttonwood Manor. My family used to dine here many years ago but due to their age hadn't been here in a few years. They weren't aware of the change. I drove down and missed the parking lot because of their new sign (first bad sign). We had made reservations for the 2:30 seating for Thanksgiving dinner. (They had 3 seatings on Thanksgiving). So, we had a nice table overlooking the lake. The menu had a very nice selection of traditional Thanksgiving meals (turkey, ham, etc.) plus other seafood items. Our order was taken promptly. After a half an hour, no soup or salad, plus our waitress was nowhere to be found. I went to a floor manager and she said she would handle it. (Meanwhile, the two very senior citizens with me were getting very nervous). Within a few minutes, the soup and salads arrived. A few minutes more and the entrees arrived! Our party was still working on the soup and salad. Very bad timing! We had the entrees sent back. Then, it took a while for the plates to be cleared, no sign of our server. Had to find the floor manager again to get the entrees. Thank goodness they weren't cold (not hot but tolerable). No waitress to check on us. After we had finished (food ok) she came back to check. Again, I had to ask one of the busboys to clear the plates. After waiting (too long), I said "F*&* It" and said lets get the check and out of here. So, this might be a good place for Jello Shots and Pizza while watching the Jets and Giants, but no more nice family dining at the Buttonwood Manor. read more

TWICE I have witnessed a manager yell at employees in a degrading manner in front of customers. Once was when we tried to check out the hall downstairs and got yelled at (although we told the manager that we booked an event there and just wanted to see the room again. He then proceeded to yell at an employee in front of us and threaten to fire him for letting us down there). And the second time was during our event because the kids were playing. Soooooooo unprofessional!!!!!!! I feel bad for these employees who are disrespected in this way. Seems like an awful work environment. Otherwise, this place really had potential. Although I have been to MJ's a few times in the past and have had pleasant experiences, unfortunately I can't say the same about our visit there tonight. It was quite the opposite actually - horrible. My husband and I went for dinner. To start off the experience our waiter put in our appetizer at the same time he put in our dinner orders so we got everything at the same time. Not what we were hoping for. The appetizer was good, however we were both very disappointed with the meals we ordered which were specials tonight. The most annoying part about the whole experience is that we were not able to notify our waiter of that because after taking our order (he didn't serve our food) he disappeared for the night. Not once did he come to our table to check on us, see how the meals were, or to ask if we needed anything. Luckily another waitress in the restaurant was nice enough to get us more beverages, condiments and clear our table after she noticed we were sitting there for a while obviously not being attended to. The only time we saw our waiter again was when he dropped the check (for our overpriced meals) and that is only because we flagged him down after almost 2 hours. Ridiculous. Needless to say the food was mediocre at best and the service was very bad. If this had been the first time we went there we would definitely not go back. Moreover, it would be nice to see management walking around asking customers how their dinner is or even just around in eyesight so that customers can let someone know when they are not satisfied. MJ's needs work. We live down the street and would love to continue to go, but only if things improve. read more

My husband and I like to come here because the food is always excellent. We were excited to come eat here yesterday and came and sat at the bar. The bar was pretty empty, besides us there were 3 people on the other side of the bar,and there were two bar tenders working... But we sat there with closed menus with no one asking for our order, and empty beer glass without asking if we needed a refill for at least 10-15 minutes, I noticed the one bartender left the bar for 10 minutes and when she came back completely ignored us, as a past worker in the food and bar industry, that really upsets me, because I know even if you need to take a break before you walk away and as soon as you get back you should always check that your costumes need are being fulfilled. We honestly love the food here, but we walked out yesterday, and I can't say that it's the first time. Bad service ruins this place. read more

My husband and I went to MJs in Matawan last night for dinner and we had an awful experience. It started off with my drink coming to the table and my husbands drink coming to the table about 10 minutes later. After we asked twice. Then we waited quite awhile for our appetizers. What was completely unacceptable was the fact that after we were served our dinners, a waiter came out from the kitchen and told my husband he was given the wrong sandwich and the sandwich he was served was meant for another table. He said his sandwich is up and ready and will be brought out immediately. This same waiter takes the sandwich away from the table. He then served it to the table next to us! Not knowing if my husband touched it, sneezed on it, or put any condiments on it. My husband got up and told the gentleman that his sandwich was served to our table first and it wasn't fresh from the kitchen. After waiting for about 10 more minutes, my husband's sandwich finally came out. We complained and they took it off our bill, but not one manager came over to apologize or let us know they knew what happened. We have been there many times and even though their service is subpar they have good food and it's close to where we live, so we would continue to go. After what I witnessed last night, I can't trust the food they serve to their customers. The absolute sad part. We had spoken to their banquet manager about having our reception at Mjs. Well that certainly won't happen now. Since we know that we can't trust their handling of food and we wouldn't do that to our family and friends. read more

Mediocre food at best. Steer clear of anything more ambitious on the menu than pizza. Drinks overpriced and watered down. You might as well just order a glass of ice. Bar staff tend to be slow and lacking in personality for the most part. All in all there are better places in the area to spend your money on considering what you can expect of MJ's. Surprised to see some low reviews - we love this place! When we lived in Matawan we went almost every week. They have a great sports bar section that attracts a nice crowd. Dining room has this great view of the lake with a fountain- relaxing. They hold bigger events here as well, so I do sometimes feel guilty walking in with a sweatshirt, but once we're in the place is very welcoming. Great servings for the price- pizzas, burgers, & sandwiches are all delicious - we always leave with left overs. read more

No sense of urgency at this place...there's a packed bar and the bartender is stacking glasses, taking out trash and reading a menu while five people have empty glasses. I have never seen bartenders with such a lackadaisical attitude. I could hear the people sitting on both sides of me complaining as well. They should make this place BYOB...good luck! read more

I just haven't been lucky dining lately....I've been in Matawan for a few years now and decided to finally try this place out. Looked like a good bar scene going on when we arrived but we ate in the main dining room. Service: Pretty terrible. Our server consistently was forgetting our drinks or other items we requested. We had to ask for some of them three times - THREE times. Never brought out our salads that came with entrees, by that point, we didn't even want them.Busboys brought out plates but wouldn't clear previously plates, for example, our dinner entrees were still sitting on table when dessert came. Busboy drops off dessert and never takes dinner plates away. When we asked server what was for dessert, she said ice cream and brownies. Now I know I saw other options on the menu (she didn't bother to offer the menu). I asked if some of the other things I thought I saw were available - "oh yea...." OKKKKK. Just in general, server seemed to not want to be there or serve us. Food: Started out with a small bar pie. Nothing to write home about. We ordered two entrees. Entrees took 38 minutes to arrive from when we ordered. I think on a weeknight when you aren't crowded, that's a stretch. I know it's not fast food but almost 40 minutes to get an entree?? Our entrees were decent but not outstanding. I wouldn't order them again. We had pasta for one of them, were never offered cheese and then couldn't get a hold of anyone to request it. Peppers and onions in my dish were barely cooked. Who wants to eat a raw onion? Apple pie came fresh out of the microwave. It would have been pretty good but I mean it was ridiculously HOT and steaming for a good ten minutes. I will definitely NOT be returning here. I am being generous. This place has severely deteriorated with the new owners. The menu is very limited and is basically a pizza joint with a sports bar rather than a place for fine dining as it used to be. Used to make the Caesar salad and dressing at the table. We've been going to MJ's for years. The MJ's in Matawan is the Buttonwood, as they purchased this property a couple of years ago. They have other locations in the area, and have done well. Here's the good with MJ's, we always ask for Beth, as she always checks on the table, replaces our drinks, very personable and always asks how the family is doing, especially our grand kids. The pizza is really good, as are the hamburgers which are cooked properly and to perfection. The not so good is the menu has never really changed, with the exception of specials and now sushi which is over priced (chef rolls are $15 a piece, which is $4-6 above a sushi place). The hostesses are nice, but not personal when coming in, as they're very young and haven't been trained properly. Overall it's a nice "go to" place. read more

I've been here twice within the past year or so. The first time I went with my mom for lunch and I ordered the crisp apple salad. It was the best salad I'd had in a while. Very fresh, the apples were delicious and the candied nuts were to die for. The second time another family outing with mom, dad, and brother. There was a live musician in the bar area which was really nice. He was a great musician and played relevant songs. I ordered the gooey ravioli melt and I'm so glad I did. The dish came with a side salad which was, again, a very fresh salad and the balsamic dressing was good. The sauce did taste a little bit like marinara but the pumped it up a bit with fresh basil. The raviolis were delicious. They came out very quickly so they were warm and gooey just as promised. I would definitely go back and order them again in the near future. Aside from the food the live music was entertaining until the banquet room underneath was blasting music, vibrating the entire restaurant. It definitely made the visit less pleasant and I felt bad for the guy playing in the bar. I would definitely give this place a try if you're looking for a great place to eat for a reasonable price. read more

Food was good as always but our waitress Paula was very very slow and never to be found when we needed her. We spent more time waiting for her to come to the table to refill drinks/ get condiments than we actually did eating and enjoying our meal. After the food arrived, we waited about 7 min for her to come and ask if we needed anything, which we did. By the time she came back with our refills and requested sauces, our food was cold. I have been here twice, after dining at their restaurant in Neptune many times. I find the two restaurants are consistant with the food qualiity and portions. Today, I had lunch with a friend here and we ordered the Sergio's Chicken Wrap. The wrap was huge and the chicken was excellent with flavor. My sweet potato fries were not the quick frozen ones....these were the "real deal" ! The menu is filled with everything from soups, saleds, sandwiches, and entrees. The prices are the same as what you would find at any other restaurant but at MJ's you can taste the quality of the food. Service was excellent each time we ate here. Good choice! Yesterday afternoon while I was at MJ's with my family, I witnessed a manager by the name of Christine being extremely unprofessional. She was screaming at one of the hostess, Daniella. I go to MJ's in Matawan a lot and I know Daniella is always there putting in hard work. I am very disappointed in the fact that Christine thought it was okay to yell at her hostess and to make matters worse, yell at her in front of the whole restaurant.
