Portland is a mecca for amazing restaurants, but I also appreciate restaurants that are establishing themselves on the outskirts of the Portland area. MK Kitchen is one of those restaurants that is creating a name for itself in the heart of Main Street in Gorham. MK Kitchen is a beautiful establishment that exudes modernization and warmth with their upscale lighting fixtures, exposed brick, and black and white hues throughout the venue. There is a small bar that is the focal point upon walking in, but there is various seating throughout venue. MK Kitchen's menu stays pretty consistent with minor changes depending on the time of year. I have been here for dinner a few times and the standouts for me have been the lobster cones (GET THEM NOW! So good!) and the gnocchi mac and cheese. However, where MK Kitchen really shines is their happy hour. Tuesday through Thursday from 4:30-6:00 MK hosts an amazing happy hour with drink and snack specials. Cocktails that would normally be $10-12 go down to $6 and they have elevated snacks for $5. On a recent visit, I decided to check out the happy hour and for drinks I tried the strawberry jalapeño margarita, which was strong and flavorful, and the pineapple mojito which was subtle and refreshing. For snacks, I ordered the clam chowder and the pulled pork taco. The clam chowder was hearty and flavorful, though not as hot as it could have been. The pork taco was very flavorful and delicious. This was a little fancy for me, but the food was good and the service was top notch. I didn't need a dictionary for the menu, but I could have used some explanation for some things, but just because of my own ignorance. We started with the lobster cones they were really good, the lobster was fresh and well prepared, we loved the cone I don't know if it was phyllo dough or something like that, and then I got the braised short rib. My husband got the fried haddock. There are quite a few interesting pasta dishes on the menu, as well as some good specials, like fried oysters. We wish they had a better craft beer selection, and it was a tad pricey, but we sat by a window and it was a very pleasant atmosphere. read more

Since coming to MK Kitchen I have found myself recommending it to every one of my gluten-free friends, friends looking to "get out of Portland", friends looking for a happy hour spot, friends looking for a romantic second date spot, and friends who like good cocktails. So, let's break this down. I came with a large group around 7pm when the hippos in tutus from Fantasia were dancing above us (this was the image we created, but really there's a dance school above MK Kitchen so it can sound a little loud at times... it's actually a very charming quirk). The space was both inviting, but hip at the same time. + Cocktails My friend had the bourbon and cider drink and it was both delicious and strong (more of a winter drink). You'll only need one of these to feel warm for the rest of the night! I had the pineapple mojito (more of a spring drink) and it was perfection. It was refreshing, invigorating, and very, very flavorful (PRO TIP: don't let them take your empty glass away, instead pour your water in it for a "second drink" of sorts). + The Menu This has to be one of the most thoughtfully broken down menus I've ever seen. Items that are vegan, vegetarian, and/or gluten free, and/or can be made vegan, vegetarian, and/or gluten-free are clearly labeled. As a vegetarian, there are always concerns when I'm at a restaurant about "what's safe", but here I didn't even have to ask the waiter (repeatedly) because I felt so confident. Well done, MK Kitchen! + Food . Braised Farm Beets ($10): Beets, goat cheese, walnuts... it tasted like spring on a plate! Very earthy and fresh tasting. . Mushroom Tart ($11): Mushrooms, goat cheese, grilled onions, herb crust... it tasted like winter on a plate! Very umami and "meaty" tasting. . Cheese Board ($14): Featuring goat, blue, and a smoked cheddar with candied walnuts, a fruit compote, and crostini... definitely worth getting and sharing because of the variety of flavor combos existing on the plate and the plethora of flavor combinations one can create from them. The blue was super gentle, the goat was super creamy, and the smoked cheddar was super "smoky" (think campfire smell). - Price v. Portion So this is where MK Kitchen falters for me. My "large" portion of ravioli featured six plump pillows of pasta (which were good, but not the star of the evening for me)... but at an exorbitant price tag of $24. Many of us who went with something off the Pasta & Grain section were concerned we had received the smaller portion, but no. My suggestion to you? I've heard so many good things about MK and waited way too long to try it out. I've got 2 littles so when MK started to offer curbside during Covid, I jumped on the opportunity. The staff was so attentive that I didn't have to call when I arrived. They must have been watching because my food was being walked out within a minute of arriving! I ordered braised Short rib with seasonal veggies and horseradish mashed potatoes. The aroma filled my car and I couldn't resist pulling off a little piece of meat to sample. Well, that one nibble turned into me basically eating the dinner with my fingers on the ride home because I couldn't stop! The short rib was so tender and juicy. I was worried the potatoes would have too much zip from the horseradish but there was a delicate balance that left a faint undertone that was in no way overwhelming. If you haven't given MK's a try, you are missing out! It's perfect for date night or just treating yourself to a quality meal. read more

I've been here twice now. Once on my birthday and then last week for Thanksgiving. Both evenings were wonderful! We had a set menu for T-Day, which was kind of nice. It helped narrow our choices. We were still able to order lobster cones though! Aside from my spouse's pork being a bit overcooked, everything was delicious! And as usual, the service was just great. For my birthday dinner, we had the full menu to work from and that was hard to narrow down to a single entre. But Every.Single.Thing. we ordered was phenomenal. The best is that you can order half portions. Loved that! Instead of getting a massive amount of pasta placed in front of me, I got a very reasonable amount and ate it all. This is definitely my "go to" restaurant when I want to go a little high end enjoy a fabulous dinner. read more

What a great, super fabulous restaurant. Two thumbs up for sure. Every bit as good as it sister restaurant at Perkins Cove. I went on a recent Friday night with three friends and we all had amazing meals, great drinks and awesome desserts. The haddock and short ribs were just perfect. We enjoyed our first visit to MK Kitchen. It's a fast paced restaurant, servers buzzing all around, in fact the service was maybe a bit too fast. We were however 10 minutes late for our reservation so that may be the reason. Our drink orders were taken quickly upon arrival. The specialty cocktails are pricey and fell a bit short. At 14.00 I'd expect to to taste a hint of liquor, although tasty. I'd order a good old martini next time around. If you like sweeter cocktails and not the taste of actual liquor, you will like what they offer on the cocktail menu. We enjoyed our beet salads. I'm not a goat cheese fan and they were only too happy to switch it out for blue cheese. A generous portion and delicious. They do serve a thick sliced warm focaccia bread with your meal, a welcome change from cold rolls elsewhere. I ordered the half portion of Bolognese. It arrived in a nice hot pasta dish and the aroma alone told me it was going to be great! It was. Not your typical tomato based sauce but a rich meaty beef sauce with a hint of tomatoes. The sauce was also not overly thick but rather had a bit of a broth to it while still adhering perfectly to the pasta. The seasoning was also not typical. I'm not 100% sure of this but there did seem to be a stronger taste of thyme. Thyme is not ordinarily something you want to much of, however if that's what's in this, it worked. The small portion is very generous and I could have taken some home but it was to amazing to give that a thought. My husband had the Faroe Island Salmon which was presented beautifully and cooked perfectly. He's not usually one to like Mediterranean style salmon but everything about this dish worked. Dessert. Ughhhh. We usually pass but couldn't do that after looking over the offerings. Several caught our eye but we opted for the Sticky Toffee Pudding. A win win for two to share. I'm not going to detail what arrived on this plate, you'll have to go and dive into it to find out. But WOW! Without question we will return! Not your typical menu which is a very welcome change in Southern Maine. You will not be disappointed! read more

To start, this restaurant is extremely loud. It was a busy night and the conversations were abundant. However, the entire dining experience was spent yelling across the table to my husband to have a conversation. We started with an appetizer of Mussels. They were undercooked and tasted extremely fishy. We ate two or three and discussed with the waitress our disappointment. We ordered a side of fried Brussels sprouts. These were pretty good but lacked any substantive flavor. Our entree consisted of two half orders of rigatoni bolognese. Thank goodness they had half orders! This tasted like a sauce that had been simmering for weeks with a burnt undertone of flavor. I must say that the hospitality was great and the waitstaff very attentive. For a more budget friendly option, MK's has a bar menu and happy hour. The food is delicious, and the mussels are a particular favorite. They also have a nice wine list and a very skilled bartender. I was impressed by a perfectly made martini, exactly to my specifications, a few times (indicating skill and consistency). MK's staff are friendly, patient and welcoming. Service is generally attentive without being obsequious. Service has only been a bit slow for us, once, when the restaurant was completely full on a random Wednesday night. The waitress was very attentive,and the food so so good. This place is a bit open and noisy, so if your looking for a quiet intimate dinner you probably need to drive into the old port. Enjoyed the meal, appetizers were amazing but the entrees were just okay overall. Just ate here at the recommendation of some friends and we enjoyed ourselves and would likely return if other people wanted to go, but I don't see us returning on our own. We got the appetizer special (dates stuffed with blue cheese) and the tomato tart. Both were amazing and I highly recommend them. For dinner I got the special gnocchi with lamb, my husband ordered the scallops, and our friends got the short ribs and the filet. The gnocchi was cooked well and the lamb was nice but the individual elements/flavors of the dish didn't stand well on their own. They tasted well mixed together; but you don't want to have to always mix everything together! My husband's scallops were overcooked and I found the risotto to be bland. Our friend loved the short rib but I personally found the flavor of the horseradish in the potatoes to be overwhelming. The filet was cooked perfectly. I got the strawberry margarita and really enjoyed it. You can taste the flavor of jalapeño in it tho, so if you don't like spicy this isn't the drink for you. My husband and I like to go out for a nice meal without the kids every month and in the past would end up driving over to Portland. Well not any longer will we need to fight the traffic and pay to park, we have MK right in our home town that gives the same vibes as many great restaurants in the city! I had the herb grilled salmon and was perfect. It came with fried Brussels and I don't even eat Brussels but I ate them all up. I never knew they could taste so good. The drinks they serve are fantastic too. I had the pomegranate cosmo which was delish and my hubby loves their Maine beer options they offer. Yeah MK Kitchen was A-OK. Not sure it was anything more than that. I really liked the restaurant itself. It's comfortable and quiet. Service was prompt. Food was good but the menu was pretty predictable. I was expecting more Italian flare but it was a lot of your standard appetizers, salads and entrees. We had: Cabernet Maine Beer Co Peeper Ale Sauvignon Blanc Jalapeño Strawberry margarita Ginger Beer Free bread: good but nothing unique Lobster cones: very tasty... Mussels: wine, lemon, butter, etc. pretty standard Clam chowder with bacon: Gazpacho Grilled Caesar salad: very lemony in a good way Crab cakes on special: lots of meat Ravioli with tomato sauce: full portion only had 5 ravioli. Not filling at all! Scallops with risotto: cooked perfectly! Gnocchi with vegetables: vegetables were streamed/boiled. Not very inventive with the vegetables. Creme Brûlée Tiramisu Coffee Tea The bill was $225 which I thought was really high. This restaurant definitely makes good use of the space that kept rotating here in the center of Gorham, it's very modern and has that downtown Portland feel. The decor is simple, clean, and upscale, a nice change of pace for the food scene here. Cocktails are what you expect in an atmosphere like this, small and starting at $10. I was very surprised and disappointed to see that nearly all of the mint leaves in my pineapple mojito were brown. I realize I'm not going to die from brown mint leaves, but for presentation purposes I'm amazed the bartender sent it out in the first place and that my waitress didn't say anything, even after I pulled out most of the leaves and left them on a plate that she later cleared. We ordered the lobster bisque and organic mixed greens as apps, the squeeze raved about his soup and I definitely second that. My mixed greens were kind of bitter and didn't have enough dressing or toppings, not worth the $9 plate IMO. Dinner was our favorite part, the squeeze ordered the Pork Two Ways which he loved, and I scored the full size of Orecchiette & Chicken Sugo which I licked clean. The portions were surprisingly large for what I was expecting at a restaurant like this. Our waitress messed up our bill and we had to send her back and void everything so she could do it correctly. This elegant little spot is filled charm and perfect late nights sipping wine and chatting with friends. The white lights all around, the warm wood table and spectacularly stocked bar all make for great ambiance. The service was spectacular. They were so friendly, accomadating and always available without feeling like they were hovereing. They made sure everyone had full drinks, clean silverware and anything you need for your meal. The cheese board was fantasic with a nice creamy goat cheese, a flovorful blue and a smoky gouda. Even when the crostinis were gone it went down well with the complimentary soft and fresh foccacia bread. The candided nuts were delicious addition. The mushroom tart was creamy and delcious and nice portion. The truffle mac n cheese gnocchi were tender and coated in a soft cheesy sauce accented with truffle oil and mushrooms. I was disappointed in price for the size of the entree, ordering the large size, I had to make sure it wasn't the small. The chocolate cake was a served in the shape of a lava cake, accompanied by candied banana and caramel gelato. The cake was dry though. The coffe armoa filled the place as it brewed during dessert and was served with cold cream and sugar cubes. Overall the food was good, the service was excellent but due to the location and difficulty parking, as well as the prices it wouldn't be something I would seek out again. MK Kitchen: making Gorham cool. I mean, I know Gorham has Gorham Grind, and there is a convenient Sebago Brewpub as well, but MK Kitchen is really bringing the upscale, Portland-foodie vibe to the sleepy center of town in a big way (with Portland-level prices to match). If you're looking for a unique spot to indulge, this is the ideal destination. Street parking is easily found and there's even room for a large party to gather (reservations recommended for that though). Start with an expert cocktail (I chose a "Seasonal Manhattan") and some charcuterie. Honestly, you could end there too and still be satisfied. Instead, I choose to follow up with a chicken liver app and a risotto entree, and oh man...leftovers for days. This was an incredibly rich meal, and while the portions were not huge, by the time my entree arrived I was stuffed. Still, I managed to get it together to try a few bites of dessert. Overall the food was really good, solid new-american, if not something I'll be remembering when the credit card bill hits. The service though was really next level good, which stood out to me in an area where, let's be honest, sometimes the blase-hipster attitude permeates. That part is priceless. Classic and chic French elegance and tastes are not what one would expect in Gorham, but MK Kitchen delivers! A menu which changes often to offer new and exciting flavor combinations, created by Chef Mitch Kaldrovich - American-born, Argentinian-raised, classically French trained chef. Amazing the way the recipes are created and often combine classic French cuisine with a hint of local flavors (as in the Duck Liver Crème Caramel with local Rhubarb Jam garnish lightly sprinkled with bacon). Every dish we enjoyed was near perfection. Flavors from the first bite to the last .. still delicious. (See photos) I had been wanting to check it out for a while but procrastinated because of what I assumed would be out-of-reach prices and lack of parking. Neither is true. There are reasonably priced dishes and the highest is still under $30. There are few parking spots in front of the restaurant, but there is some parking behind, and across the street behind the white building there. DO be sure to make reservations. This place fills up quickly, even mid-week. The perfect place for a special night out - or just a quick app and beverage at the gorgeous bar - without having to go into Portland. Coming from a fine dining background I very much so love any restaurant that still crumbs a table! That being said, MK kitchen was on point from service to presentation and didn't miss a single detail. We ordered drinks, apps, and entrees, and followed up with dessert. The wine list here by glass is small. I got one of two options of Sauvignon blanc. I opted for California over Austria (but they could have done with a grapefruity New Zealand) which paired really well with the cheese board appetizer: candied walnuts, grapes, goat, cheddar, mint, quince, and a really high quality bleu cheese. It was so cool and creamy, but not... Sour. Cheap bleu tastes like lemons. I'm sorry. Judge me all you want, haha. For dinner, the Mister got the steak special with horseradish mash, broccoli, and added a grilled lobster tail. His steak was perfect. Juicy, tender, charred on the outside and cool and pink in the middle. I could never replicate such a feat at home, so naturally he was on cloud nine. I ordered the pesto rigatoni (it's nut-free!) which came topped with roasted red peppers and flaked Parmesan. The flavor was good and it's wasn't overpowering in any department. I DO wish the menu had more variation. There's a lot of seafood (I'm allergic. So maybe this is griping... Bear with me.). The real kicker here was dessert: homemade cheesecake (which had no eggs, or at least seemed like it wasn't baked with eggs, no browning, no smooth top, very rustic and the bottom crust was kind of soggy, absorbing the moisture from the raw filling). The cheesecake was good; it was very fluffy! I anticipate it was just whipped cream cheese, sour cream, lemon, vanilla, and sugar (this is all from tasting, not asking btw, I'm assuming I have a good eye for these things so slow me down if I get too froggy...). It was not dense or rich. I liked it! Over top was a blueberry compote and on the side pineapple sorbet, also homemade. There were about six dessert options, but how can you turn down cheesecake? Next time we're going for tiramisu! OVERALL: The meal was fantastic, the atmosphere is amazing, our waters were always full, and the level of detailed service and quality are top notch. The price tag is what you would expect of a fine dining restaurant. With generous tip we dined for two at about $130.00. This isn't a regular occurrence for us, we just happened to be celebrating, and it's nice to have someplace outside of downtown portland, with reasonable parking, and close to home.
