So we were looking for someone that took reservations for 13 people. The MKT BAR cheerfully accommodated is. They do not have a liquor license so they only serve wine and beer. Tuesday and Thursday nights are steak night. Ribeye steak with twice baked potato and salad for $15. My steak was delicious. I tried the Brussels sprouts as well really good. While I can appreciate MKT BAR's inclusivity in offering a vegan pizza. Execution was um, pretty subpar. (Note: I think it's since been removed from the menu, understandably so . . .) So why four stars? Well, because there are still plenty of actually delicious and more edible vegan options within Phoenicia, which I regularly purchase and bring into MKT BAR without any fuss. So MKT BAR deserves a positive rating based on its technical performance. Oh, and gotta love that free garage parking! Also, MKT BAR is fairly spacious, so I've never had an issue grabbing a seat here, even when it's decently crowded. Speaking of it being crowded (which it can be during Steak Nights), forget about actually carrying on a conversation in here whenever it's a well-attended night. The acoustics are gawdawful. Expect a similar assault of your ears whenever a DJ or band is playing. I mean, I appreciate live music as much as the next temporarily-deaf-the-next-day patron, but hey, maybe American Sign Language as a high school and college language elective wasn't the worst idea ever (Look, who doesn't like easy As?!). The husband is quite fond of the Steak Night so I'm assuming the steaks are competent. There is also happy hour from 4 through 6 p.m. on the weekdays - not the most amazing deal, but you can probably adequately supplement the happy hour appetizers with Phoenicia goodies. MKT BAR does offer a nice selection of beers and wines (no liquor). Other than the very sad vegan pizza, I haven't sampled very much off the menu. My dining companions haven't always been the most impressed, but there are gems here and there - unfortunately I can no longer remember what stood out to them (I'm ever so helpful!). read more

We missed Steak night (it was closed for the 4th) but tried it for happy hour and a pizza. Will have to plan another trip, Pizza was awesome. If you don't eat the crust on a pizza, you're either a "brat" or the bread's not good. We didn't leave a crumb of the chibatta(?) bread crust or toppings. SO ordered the mojito. It was delicious. Last night was the 2nd time a group and I ate at MKT bar - we've all lived downtown for many years, we are frequent Phoenicia shoppers, so we are familiar with this establishment. The 1st time I ate here, I was given raw chicken, the mgr and waiter couldn't care less, the level of concern wasn't there. I didn't ask for another but one was brought to me, then I was charged. Not sure who can even eat after raw chicken is brought to their table but it is what it is. I was looked at oddly when I asked for a new set of silverware, as the old ones touched the raw chicken. That was experience 1. The 2nd time, last night was our first steak night, while I will say the salads are good, large but good. The twice baked potato, or more like 5 times baked potato was flavorless and over cooked to the point where the cheese on top was a rock. The greasy onion strings that are just there for garnishment, has a sea of oil under my steak. The cooking of my steak was a perfect med-rate like I asked but the steak it self was 70% fat 30% meat. Definitely a low grade ribeye. I think the service was another issue yet again, we had to continuously wait for refills and it wasn't that busy as they had many empty tables with reserved signs on them. The waitress was sweet but definitely in the weeds for no apparent reason. Down to earth, bar with a great selection of music and a great DJ. I love when a DJ believes in his playlist enough to dance and enjoy his own vibe. He was on it tonight. Being a blue bell kinda girl, I never ventured into Gelato, wasn't bad at all. Peanut butter and dark chocolate mixed together, with a cup of caramel macchiato. Hey don't judge me, I wanted hot and cold. Food varies by and to your tastes buds, my friend girls who tried the hamburgers, said they were cooked well done, and was a little dry. I visited during a Thursday night for Steak night. $15.95 will get you a salad, a steak with chimchurri sauce, and a side of fries or baked potato. Not too bad for the price. I've been to other steak nights that was disappointment, but it's to be expected given the price point. So I went to MKT not expecting much. I arrived with my partner, and we shared the steak entree with an order of Mac and Cheese. Mac and cheese was pretty standard. You can't really mess up an order of mac and cheese. However, the steak was surprisingly tender, juicy, and well-seasoned. It's a decent size for one person too. You can easily be full off of the salad, steak, and side of potatoes. I would recommend stopping by if you're looking for a steak night with casual dining. Also, I'm not sure if it was where I was sitting, but the music was way too loud. I'm pretty young, so usually background music doesn't bother me, but I found myself having to shout to have myself heard. This used to be my go to place for brunch. I love that they have pomegranate mimosas and the chicken and waffles used to be my favorite. It is served with a Moroccan spiced syrup which is so good. I was really disappointed this time though. Service was not good. It took forever for us to be greeted and there were not that many tables at the time, half of the tables were closed due to either COVID or being short staffed. Server brought out the wrong drink for my son and proceeded to tell him if he really wanted what he ordered that he would change it out for him. How about just bring the right drink? I am a restaurant manager for Pappas and I know what to look for regarding staff and service, quality fo food and such. Food came out in a timely manner but it was not how I remember it to be. The waffles seemed frozen and the chicken was such a small serving. Syrup was still amazing. Even though when the server brought our food and asked us if we needed a anything else I asked for extra syrup and he seemed mad that I asked him for it. Brought my boyfriend here bragging about how great it was and he gave me a side eye when the food arrived because he knows I have high expectations. My sons pizza was pretty good though. Took forever for our server to bring our check as well even though I had my credit card out on the table waiting. Free parking in the Phoenicia garage on McKinney (i think). I recommend the $12 steak on Tues/Thurs, substitute broccoli for the baked potato (you'll still get the fried potato strings), and it comes with a salad. I washed it down with a few Proseccos and was in heaven. My group shared 2 desserts: the MKT cake (chocolate mousse and hazelnut cake), and the cheesecake (sewrved in a gar with toasted marshmallows). All divine. This review is based on a single (Wednesday afternoon/evening) visit just prior to an Astros game. I plan to update this review during future visits. Yep, the MKT Bar is more than worthy of a repeat. The MKT Bar is an offshoot of Phoenicia Specialty Foods. Though it feels quaint and cozy, it's sufficiently large to handle groups (there were two groups there during my visit), with enough individual tables for a crowd. It has a hipster feel to it, but they don't go overboard with the décor. The high ceilings equate to a very loud atmosphere when the place gets packed. No problem, considering this is a bar. Though the place has an excellent beer selection from breweries near and far (and what appeared to be a fine wine list), this review is mostly about the food. My daughter and I noshed on the house queso/pita chips, fried cheese and 'The Butcher,' a meat-topped pizza. All were delicious. The fried cheese is different from your run-of-the-mill frozen versions, as they use Fontina and bread it in panko. The pizza had a very nice flavor, although the crust was soggy. The queso was the most memorable dish, as it is made with a funky blend of artisan cheeses. Service here was iffy when we first arrived. We were among three people in the place and several servers stood around and just offered us passing glances for about 10 minutes. Once someone came to the table to take care of us, the attention paid to us was excellent for the rest of the night. Perhaps we showed up during a shift change? Bottom line: This place has a limited, but eclectic menu. Their ingredients list is interesting and proved to be excellent in the dishes we sampled. MKT BAR is my kind of place. It's located within Phoenicia Market (which I didn't get a chance to check out more than through the window as I walked by), but based on what I saw, I would 100% do my shopping at Phoenicia if given the opportunity. But back to MKT BAR. It's awesome. Seriously awesome. I walked in on a Monday night and instantly liked it. The relaxed and artsy atmosphere is warm and welcoming and there is something on the menu for everyone... Wine, beer, gourmet appetizers, light bites, desserts, coffee and tea. I sat at the bar between Fujio W and Farrah A and enjoyed a glass of wine, a salad with shrimp, and an order of chickpea fries. I also tried the Haig's Chili that Farrah A raves about (and now I know why she raves about it). The bartender was super friendly and the food was definitely five star worthy. From happy hours and brunches to soul sessions and steak nights, it looks like there are all kinds of fun happenings at MKT BAR throughout the week. I also noticed there are apartments or condos in the same building as MKT BAR and I kind of wish I lived in one of them just so I could frequent MKT BAR and Phoenicia Market all the time. How about opening your next location in Phoenix?! I promise you'd have at least one loyal customer if you did so! With the opening of the market next door, they also added in a new bar. This place deserves it's own review because it's that great, and has separate operating hours and entrances. This place is a great spot to grab a drink after work, dinner at night, or even dessert on a date. I came here after visiting the market and my gf wanted a sitdown dinner instead of just to-go next door. It's a bit confusing but when you enter it's seat yourself anywhere, and then the waiter will come to your table with a menu. Their menu is very simple a clipboard with printed items. They have a wide variety of wines and beers, along with appetizers and entrees. I had to study after dinner so opted not to drink, but their water is spectacular. Yes I understand it's just water but their ice is crushed, reminded me of sonic ice, the water comes in separate carafes, not just giant pitchers. As far as food we had an order of the bayou sliders, it had bbq sauce and bacon on it, the bread was a bit thick but good. We also had the market pizza, on the hand tossed crust. This thing was amazing. It was super fresh, packed with wonderful ingredients, including a sweet pear! After dinner, they offer gelato. I tried the mango and coconut white chocolate. DAMN the coconut white chocolate was freaking addicting. The service is great once they come to your table. I was a bit confused at first since you seat yourself...but after a waiter has claimed you they are very attentive. They stay open later on Thursday-Sat, and even have a DJ. read more

Although I enjoyed my patronage at MKT bar and loved the food and the atmosphere there, I couldn't get myself to give them a better rating due to the lack of service. Me and my friends decided to give this place a try for a guys' night out. There were, in total, eight of us; and we didn't all come at once. Me and a couple of friends had come in probably about 30 minutes after the rest of the gang showed up. It took our waitress a good 15 minutes before she decided to came back to our table to take our drink orders. I decided that it was also a good time to place my orders (the menu was still on the table so I was able to browse while waiting for her to come by.) After she had taken my food and drink orders, she disappeared again into nowhere. I literally wasn't able to see where she had gone. Maybe she had a big party on the other side of the bar? Who knows? But considering there were eight (well seven, because one had to go) people in our party, I'm sure we were deserving of better attention. Heck, even if there were only two in our party, we were deserving of better attention as well. Throughout the night, our waitress probably came back to check on us twice. My water was never refilled. The busboys (or whatever) came out with the food orders. And even when we were ready to get our check, it took some looking around to find her. What was she doing the whole time? Who knows? But I was completely displeased with the kind of service that I had received from her. Although in all fairness, my friends told me that she was much better when they were serving her. Maybe she just stopped caring because she knew that she was going to include her tips in our check anyway? Now on the other hand, the food was great. I had the hummus to open, and although Kasra holds the title as the best hummus in Houston, by far; the hummus at MKT bar wasn't too bad either. I had the sliders for my main entree and they were not too shabby. The pickles were great and the meat was cooked just right. The buns were delicious as well. The fries weren't too bad, either. They were crisp and not too greasy. The seasoning that they had over the fries was pretty good. As for the atmosphere, they have a big selection of board games, a few TV's so you can watch your favorite team play (I was watching the Rockets game,) and a couple of ping pong tables if you want to get sweaty a little bit. They have TWO steak nights on Thursday and Tuesday, but I've yet to try their steak yet. If first impression is the only thing that matters, I won't be back. What a cool concept - a lively restaurant tucked in a specialty grocery store. You can park in the One Park place garage attached to the Phoenicia market. Entrance is located on the corner of Austin St and McKinney St. Just make sure you park in the Phoenicia reserved parking spots. Not sure if your car will get towed if you park in the other spots. From the garage, you can take the elevator to get to Phoenicia market and MKT bar. When we came in, a band was already setting up to play live music. The design of this restaurant was pretty cool too - dark with candlelit lighting, brick walls, and exposed metal pipes. It reminds me a lot of Chicago. There are mostly small tables and booths that can seat 4 people maximum. A couple of long tables are available closer to the small stage area where the band was playing, and further away where you can't see the band. So, this restaurant can get quite cramped. We came on a Thursday night for their steak night special. For $12.99, I'd say it was definitely worth it. My friend and I asked for our steaks to be cooked medium rare and medium, respectively. These did not disappoint. Our steaks had a nice crust on the outside and a nice grilled, char flavor throughout. The twice baked potato, fried shoestring onions, and the side Caesar salad were delicious as well. All of this was really quite filling. As for our drinks, we ordered two of their local cider beers - golden cidre and pomegranate cidre. Both were great, but we preferred the golden cidre because it was sweeter. If you like it more tart, then choose the pomegranate cidre. The beers were very affordable. Instead of glasses of beer, we got whole bottles. My advice of you don't want to drink too much is just to buy a bottle to share amongst yourselves. Even though we were already quite full, we did manage to order their desserts. But, the ones we ordered weren't that great. The carrot cake bread pudding was just meh, and the butterscotch ice cream that came with it tasted like menthol. Sorry, that's the only way I could describe it. The chocolate cake was kind of dry, and it was a little too decadent for us. But, maybe the other desserts may be better. I kind of wished we had more time to look around Phoenicia market after eating at MKT bar because the food and snacks there looked pretty amazing. MKT Bar was exactly what we needed after a drive in from Austin. Located downtown, I would expect the parking to be difficult to find and expensive. It was neither. After our hunger built up from the drive, we were ready to devour some yummy food, however it was that awkward 2pm time and we were hungry for everything under sun. Luckily, MKT Bar offers a pretty solid variation of menu items appealing to all sorts of cravings, but more importantly - they offer up some dishes that are ideal for sharing, like the meat and cheese plate. But what I enjoyed most about this platter was the generous portions of each meat and cheese. Sometimes, the more 'artisanal' places offer overpriced nibbles of each cheese and meat. There's also a delightful selection of healthy options, like the kale salad that was still pretty dang delicious, while fresh and healthy. I think it was the lemon vinaigrette applied perfectly proportionate to the amount of kale. Our server was super personable and helpful with the menu. She was a good sport as we kind of camped out at the table as we co-worked, nibbled, and maybe overstayed our welcome just a bit. MKT BAR -- an expansion of my ever-favorite Phoenicia. It takes off mostly in the evenings, but there is a brunch there that I haven't tried. Gotta love the live music and the atmosphere here! Everyone is noshing on the good food, enjoying some beats, and gabbing it up. The food is decent by Phoenicia standards and good for Downtown when you consider the price point and the free parking. Normally, I just come here to relax with a beverage or dessert. Last night was my first real dinner here. I don't think that I'd prefer it to grabbing something from the Phoenicia shawarma station. The price didn't quite match up for me. My friend and I split the following a pitched in a total of ~$50 after tax and tip: :: 7oz Rib-eye Steak with House Salad and Choice of Potato :: Tuesdays and Thursdays are steak night. This is by far the tastiest looking steak that I've seen during Houston steak nights, so I really wanted to try it. It actually came out pretty sizeable. For me, I kept chewing and chewing and chewing the darn thing even though it was medium rare. Perhaps it was too marbled? The twice baked potato was good but got cold really quickly. The house salad was romaine with a bit of mozzarella cheese (I'm guessing), bell peppers, red onions, and the purple-y olives. (I don't eat olives, and so I don't spend my time trying to figure out how to describe this one. :: Leek and Feta Tart with a Mixed Green Salad :: Very flavorful if not a little rich and sinful with all that fat going on. This was probably the highlight of my evening. :: Za'atar fries with Mediterranean ketchup and aioli :: If you are familiar with soups in the Beltway 8 location, the fries come in the large bowl. By other Houstonian standards, this might not be very big. There are bits of lemon zest and good use of pepper. I like the sea salt but found it overwhelming after a few bites. The ketchup had a nice tang. I never complain about aioli. Definitely could be split among many. They were the super skinny shoestring fries that I found got cold really quickly, too. :: Sencha kyoto rose green tea :: A decent size -- maybe 6-8 oz? It did not come with the bag. It was served perfectly warm -- not too hot. This also got cold quickly and did not come with a resteeping. Hmm... $2.50. Our server was super smiley and nice. I thought it was a nice experience. We were able to be rushed in and out before catching a show in the Theatre District; our server was very mindful of it. Overall -- I will try coming to brunch or for desserts again. You have quick access back and forth to both MKT and Phoenicia's yet the resturants has a more urban, dimmed light, intimate feel with soft music and very Houston Hipster vibe. We ordered some drinks specials (at that time their craft beer and Pineapple marg.) and their pineapple Margarita was great, we decided to ordered a shareable meat lovers pizza and It was amazing! As luck would have it, Phoenecia Specialty foods and MKT Bar is right around the corner from my conference so yes, we're going to be great friends! I pop in for a quick dinner and they've got a young quartet of budding musicians blasting out rock classics. The place is busy and looks like a community meeting spot but with a nice wine and beer bar on the side, nice! I grab a small table and check out the menu. Order up some queso with pita chips, sliders and a nice wheat beer to keep me company. Service is a bit slow but I think it's mostly the kitchen and crowd. The queso app is quite good and could feed three or four people. Tangy quality cheese and pita is pretty filling but eventually I make it over to my three sliders. Thick, seared beef patties, crisp bacon and a thick pickle on top. Great job with these sliders, you can easily make a meal from them, yum! Paired up with the music, casual environment and delicious food, I can see why MKT Bar is popular. It's not fancy, it's not frou-frou, it's just good casual food served in a fun environment. It's a cool looking industrial rustic "bar" but it has a sizeable food menu and plenty of seating, including both high bar table seating and a few long tables that are good for groups. We went a couple times, both during the day, and found it was possible to grab one of these. The food menu has some more adventurous items as well as standard fare like pizza. I had the "Picnic" pizza which actually didn't look great (seemed dry and or left out too long) but did taste great - with delicious brie, walnuts and other toppings I forgot. The boyfriend and I sat at the bar and were served immediately. I like that the bar counter was clean because some places can be sticky and dirty. The grapefruit flavor was light and had a slight bitter fruitiness, but was still sweet. The presentation was beautiful and it tasted great too. RASPBERRY MKT MOJITO- raspberry and mint shaken with apple cider and sparkling wine I really liked this drink. It was also very refreshing as the first one, but it was fruitier and icier. It was the perfect drink for a hot sunny day. The raspberry pieces were sweet and added the perfect touch to the apple cider. I want to come back and try other drinks and check out their food menu. I live in the same building as this place. We went in at 7:20 to eat, was told they close at 7:30 by staff. But that we could look at menu and quickly put our order in and they would take care of us. We went to sit down but the music was very loud so we moved to a table closer to the entrance. Then a server came over and informed us they closed at 7:30, we were prepared to place a Togo order so as to get out of the restaurant. Then she stated they close at 8:00 pm very defiantly never giving us even a chance to say that we were going to place a Togo. So we just got up and walked out. read more

I should not have ordered "fish and chips " a fabulous dish from my homeland when the restaurant has no Irish/English background. I will have to start by saying, I have a soft spot for this place, so this may make my rating a little biased. First of all, we did not have to make a reservation. All the other places in Houston had a three plus hour wait, so this was somewhat of a last resort thing. The service has always been good, but this time, it was a little weak. I am not sure if they were short staffed, but we had to constantly look for the waiter to get us water, refills, the check, and new drinks. I ordered the scrambled eggs with roasted potatoes and sausage. This plate was really good. The portion was also perfect! It is definitely good enough to fill you, but won't leave you feeling like you are super full. The americano coffee was a little cold, so if you are a coffee connoisseur, I would make sure it is hot enough for your liking. Our table also ordered the chicken and waffles. They were average. Per my friend, it seemed like the batter was not seasoned enough and the breading was not crunchy. I didn't taste the queso, but my friends agreed that it was good. It has fresh onions, beef, and tomatoes. They also said, it was not overly greasy. The pita chips they served it with were good, even though were broken into really small pieces. Despite this, their mimosas are good and they have a good wine selection (for me). Again, I have a soft spot for this place, so I will be back, but if you're looking for the "best" brunch in Houston, I would not count on it being MKT. One more thing to add, since it is connected with the Phoenicia Specialty Foods, you can buy food there, and enjoy it in MKT. Ohhhhh MKT BAR how I wanted give you 5 STARS!! I'm giving two Stars to this establishment only because our server, Aaron, did what I think he thinks was his best effort and he did try to redeem himself towards the end of service. However, it was a little too late! I think this place is really cool and I totally get the concept. However, I really wished I would have taken the time to read on their website that they do not offer your good old liquors. Instead and in place, they use Sake. Okay. I'll try it. Tried it. Didn't like it. Unfortunately, I sent the first drink back because it tasted like dirty dish water and the second drink I just dealt with it. My best friend was way more patient and empathetic than I. Since we met up right around 6pm, the place was getting a little busy. And the Astros were playing at home. So service was a little slow. Slow to take our order and slow to bring the awful drinks. Like I said Aaron gets an A for Effort but I see Training in his near future. We had to ask for water several times over. Had to ask for napkins and silver ware! Geez. Food was good. The cooks or Chefs back there save this place no doubt. I'm not a fan of the MKT bar. Not sure I'll be back. Forks down! read more

This was my first time at MKT Bar, the inside is very big and can accommodate big parties in addition to offering cozy booths for two. There's also really nice art all along the walls for a highschool competition and the music they were playing at night was great. However I was so-so about the food. The non-alcoholic sparkling pomegranate drink I got barely sparkled. I got the queso with beef for my app. The queso was really good but the pita chips it came with were already crumbling and when you'd dip it they'd break even more. Finally, I got the chips and fish for my main course. The fish was really really good, the batter coating was so light and crispy! The chips were chickpea chips, so they were different and not bad at all but I think I prefer traditional chips with my fish. Overall it was a nice experience, I'd recommend but not sure if I'd really go back, nothing on the menu really stood out to me personally. read more

So this is a really nice place walking distance to main street. I love that they have local art on the walls and a dj at night. I came here woth a large group of people for dinner. Drinks: i asked the bartender to freestyle on a drink since the one i really wanted wasn't available and i think i made a horrible decision...i had to send the drink back and order a mojito which was sweet and ok. Food: i ordered the pulled pork sandwich but substituted the bread for a wrap (pita bread). The presentation was interesting. The food came swimming in oil and quite salty for my liking so i ended up sending it back. This wasn't a good first experience so i just drank my mojito while everyone else ate.
