Jersey City's Worst. Went here with a friend who moved to the area and the entire experience was miserable. Staff is consistently rude and snooty and denies any reasonable requests. The "coffee" here tastes burnt and just overall poorly made and is insanely overpriced. Don't waste your time here, there are so many other good coffee places with people who aren't uppity and rude. Also the bamboo straws are also trash. Don't waste your time here. Literally going to Dunkin Donuts from now on. read more

Coffee is incredible, they know it well, make it well and are friendly people. I read a review someone posted about the place being small and the barista being "high", that is a load of bs. Some people are just way chill and making such a statement is a hot garbage complaint. Furthermore, if you don't know what Nitro cold brew is supposed to taste like, order something else instead of stinging a business with a 3-star rating because you are an uptight, judgmental complainer that apparently has a need for excessive personal space in the most densely populated area in the country. Modcup makes an excellent product and if you weren't antisocial, you might discover it is also a place where nice people chill and talk to one another. I wish I could give Mod Cup 4.5 stars. While everything about their coffee is excellent, the space they're operating in is a bit uncomfortable. The good: awesome music played from an actual record player (including Clash, The Beatles), friendly baristas who know their coffee and aren't afraid to share their knowledge, and of course the coffee itself. The best part of the place is that they make the drink the way you want it. You tell them if you want milk or water, and how much. But before you do that, choose from one of three or four of beans for drip coffee and one of two beans for espresso drinks. Although all the roasts are biased to the lighter side, the beans they have are excellent quality; you don't need a dark roast if you have really good coffee. The best of the best is the coffee itself. These guys roast their own coffee and don't make a meal of it like some other small roasters do. The flavors of the bean come through nicely, and although the beans we took home could have used a little darker roast, the Ethiopian they were brewing in house was spectacular. The bad: I think an ideal coffee spot has space to sit down with someone or hang out and read a book for a while. Mod Cup is a bit cramped for my tastes, and the modern deco style leads to yet more discomfort. Finally, the drinks and the beans are expensive, but here, at last, you get what you pay for. read more

Moved in this neighborhood a year ago and thought I would have to travel far to get a good cup of joe. Discovered this place early this year and have had no regrets since. Great coffee, great baristas and a great atmosphere to chill and spend part of the day. They really know their coffee and make pretty spot on recommendations. Espresso drinks are outta this world here. Their single brew ChemEx style coffee is great and they really extract and bring out the flavor well. A coldbrew by them sits real nice on a hot summer day, especially the Kyoto. Would highly recommend to a friend and have been converting every one of my friends possible to check this place out. Without a doubt, one of the best Cortados I've ever had. I came in here this morning with a buddy, and we were given a first-hand WHIFF of the fresh beans by the guy at at the counter. Fantastic. The drinks were concentrated, done at the perfect temperature, and tasted delicious. While it stinks that Modcup isn't really near me, I know if were close to JC, I'd frequent this place for sure. This is by far the best coffee I've ever had in Jersey City. It's up in the Heights across from a beautiful park overlooking Manhattan. The staff is so very knowledgeable. I learned more about coffee in my 15 minutes at Mod Cup, than anywhere else I've ever been (other than an actual coffee farm in Guatemala). I was put onto this place by my dude Dr Dre AKA Young Dreezy AKA Andre 2000. He assured me that it was the best, and boy was he right. I had heard really good things about Mod Cup, so went there last week and got ice coffee and it was extremely watery and weak. Also got some beans to try as well. Ground them myself and put them in our pour over coffee, and it was still really disappointing to the point where I threw out the rest of the beans after making a few cups. Coffee flavor was not well-rounded and even increasing the grounds didn't make a stronger cup. Could've had a better cup at Dunkin' Donuts. read more

I got a pour over with my wife. Coffee was decent, but when we went to pay for the two coffees and a bag of beans the guy was like, "That'll be $30." My wife had a $20 in her hand me it took a solid 90 seconds for her to process that she didn't have enough money in her hand to purchase what was in front of her. Each "normal" coffee was $4 and took about 10 minutes for the guy to prepare. And $22 for some coffee beans? I walked to the bodega down the block to buy a $1.50 packet of Oreos to bring me back to reality. I can deal with pretentious baristas, but not getting price-gauged in the flipping Heights. read more

After my first gulp, I let the flavor settle in my mouth and it was just so smooth with a hint of sweet end. No acid / heart burn note and the aroma is just what you would think a solid cup of coffee would be like. Now, I wanted to drop a star and bring the rating to a 4 because $4.50 for a cup of coffee is a bit heavy on my wallet. But the guy behind the counter was nice and knowledgeable... and they have nitro cold brew which will definitely come in handy in the summer especially with the park across with benches and view of NYC skyline and Hoboken. I'll just have to make it a "treat myself to a little reward" kind of a place. What a different feel from my first experience at ' The Mod'. When I first went the counter person was nice and had a great personality. This time the 'true colors' comes out as the condescending, rude Hoboken 'hipster' attitude (that's right) that I am better than you syndrome comes through. I also believe that there was some ageism thrown in as good measure ( I seen the way I was treated as opposed to others yep you got it...younger than I) and how every time I was friendly I was look at as weird or not reverent. Omg this place! My review of their Hoboken cart was the review that started me on this long windy path of Elitehood. They will always hold a place in my heart for that. But more importantly, they will hold a place in my heart for their AMAZING coffee! I have been in full on fiend mode since the truck departed from The Ho last year. They have been some place-holder but after finally getting back to the cafe a few weeks ago, I remembered why I was moved to write that first review. I have yet to have an "ok" drink here. Everything is GREAT! From the cold brew, to the cortado, to the iced latte and esp their cold brew cocktails (I love "The Jack"), everything is always on point! Now that I've moved a 6 min walk (yea I counted) away from the cafe, I fear that I will become ever more addicted to their delicious coffee. I stopped in here to meet a potential client for morning coffee. I'm not sure what I was expecting as I typically drink a cup of Dunkin in the AM, but I was BLOWN AWAY by my cup of coffee that morning. It paired beautifully with the almond scone that I ordered as well. The coffee was so fresh and delicious and I could have easily eaten 7 more scones. 5 stars for the best espresso I ever had. it was a small espresso with some soy and almond milk (yes they have both) and it was just wonderful. They take cards, quick and efficient. Always get excited when a new coffee joint opens up. I know these guys have been around a few months and I'm a bit late to the game with my review but deal with it! The crew that work here are super knowledgeable about their craft and can really let you know what kind of coffee is up your alley. A lot of their stuff is super strong which if you need a boost is the way to go. I haven't tried the cold brew they serve yet but is definitely on the list. One of the best coffee house's I've ever been too!! Didn't know this place even existed until I walked by, now I don't know how I can live without it. The owners are awesome, extremely considerate and friendly!!! They always make an attempt to ask for your name and pretty good at remembering it. It feels like if Friends and Cheers had a baby with the Beatles and really loved coffee, this would be their love child.
