I have thick, curly hair that has been called "challenging", and have finally found someone who is up for the challenge! I decided to try out Model Call because I got a groupon and so I didn't know what kind of stylist I would get and how the cut/color would look. Fortunately, I got an appointment with carlynne. I got this really great groupon in the begining of May for Model Call Salon. I called and got an appointment for a Brazilian Blow out with Tiara. I was very excited because I'd done my research on the Brazilian Blow Out and thought that this would help out my hair cituation. I have very freezy hair and have to flat iron it every other day and use several anti-freeziness products and leave in conditioners. It takes about an hour to dry my hair and to flat iron my hair. I got to Model Call Salon and I was really impressed with how nice the salon and the staff was. They had chocolate covered strawberries and mimosas...place was really clean and gave a great 1st impression. I only waited about 10 mins for Tiara to be done with the previous appointment and then it was my turn. I explained to Tiara about my hair problems, she examined my hair and she said the Brazilian Blow Out would be perfect. She mentioned how it will deminish the friziness tremendously and cut my hair styling in half. I was ready and she began the process. About 2 hours later I was done and it was done. My hair looked similar to how I style it and how it looks when I flat iron my hair and use all the products I do. I felt satisfied, paid, and left her a good tip. I was pretty shocked though that I paid almost $150 in shampoo and conditioner for my hair. Tiara told me that I had to wash my hair every 3 days and leave the mask all night once a week. I did like my hair, but on the second day I started noticing that I was begining to have flakes, like dandruff. On the third day I washed my hair and left the mask all night and the next day washed it off and dryed it off. right away I was discouraged because it looked the same as it always did. I had to completely flat iron my hair and use all the anti-freeziness products so it would look descent again. I was sooo mad that I had spent the same amount of time on my hair as before and that it was at the most 20-30% less freezy. I called Tiara and left her a message and didn't hear back from her. I sent her an email on 5/11/11 as well and she never replied to me. I am pretty upset that she never replied or did anything about it. I've had better luck with John Frieda products including their new 3 day strait product. The salon itself was really nice, but definitely wouldn't recomend Tiara based on her after unproffesionalism. 9/6/11 I upped this from 2 stars to 4 stars. Tiara did finally contact me and did try to make things better. She made a great offer, which I'm still debating on taking, but I am happy she did take the time to contact me and fix things. read more

Peter is fabulous! He is amazing at highhlighting my hair and keeping it looking natural and healthy. He kept my hair growing through my wedding and had the highlights perfect. This is the second time I saw Vadim. First time my hair turned out fine. This time? Not good at all. The color didn't process properly and he seemed off his game. I went in for highlites and came out with much darker hair , no new blonde highlites and the root system on my blonde hair was the same as when I walked in - very dark. Nothing changed. I am now looking for a new hairdresser to fix my hair. Vadim has been late both times I've gone to him, though a lot later the first time then the second. Making appointments on line with him is a pain. I had to call twice and then he responded twice with one available date because he only works a couple days a week. The parking at the salon is ridiculous and the receptionist is incredibly unprofessional . The other hairdressers seem nice and the salon has coffee and other snacks for the clients. This was a complete waste of $160.00. Never going back! read more

I've been getting my brows done by Mari for about 10 years now and I won't let anyone else touch them. Oh yes, I've tried. Every once in awhile I was lured away by the sweet siren song of lower prices or more convenient parking, but they always did a shoddy job and I would end up with scary thin sharpie brows or a hot wax burn. Mari not only tweezes my brows one by one (wax makes me break out), she also shapes them to perfection with her magic hands. Recently, I've tried a couple facials with Mari and the Pumpkin Peel is amazing! I did walk out red and irritated, but after about a day and a half, my skin peeled and revealed the most amazing glow and softness. And while her facials may not be for the weak, she extracts nearly every blemish and congested area until your skin is completely clear and pore free. And it lasts! My problem area (the chin) stayed baby-butt smooth for about two full weeks after my facial. Mari also has a genuine likability that makes you feel comfortable in any situation, even when your legs are spread up over your shoulders and she's tweezing where no man has gone before (or at least not recently). Her bikini waxes are immaculate, and she never misses a stray hair. I tried another Yelp highly rated North Park waxer recently, and after close inspection when I got home, she missed several important patches and I had baby hairs coming back within a day or two. Booooo! :( Mari is the best at what she does and her prices aren't inflated. While other salons are charging $25 a brow wax, Mari keeps things totally reasonable and I can get a brazillian, brow, and lip wax well under $100, tip included! What can I say? I had my hair done by Raquel for the first time the other day. She was recommended to me by someone whose hair is always colored and cut beautifully. Raquel took a lot of time consulting with me about what style and color would best compliment my features. She gave me several choices of color and styles. I've been going to Eryc for awhile now and he was the first one to get my haircut just how I wanted, so I've stuck to him like superglue and will cry if he ever moves out of town. I decided to re-activate my account of years ago JUST for places like this. In the beginning, my experience was not very good here. I bought a Groupon and tried making appointments countless times and I kept getting cancelled. I got annoyed and gave up. A couple months later I decided to give it another shot. I get there 15 mins before my appointment time but the stylist is 7 minutes late. At this point I am just breathing an patiently waiting. When the stylist finally comes to get me, she can't figure out how to apologize. She felt so bad I couldn't stay upset. (plus, she had a legitimate excuse). All I could think is I hope this gets better. It did. I've been to too many salons around the area. None have gotten me to stay. I've had such bad experiences with stylists, I don't know why. But Veronica was such a breath of fresh air. What I appreciated the most about her is when she would start the timer between processes, she did not once rush to leave to the back room to chat with her co-workers. She stayed with me. Completely attentive and listening to everything I said. Whether it was about my hair, or about violence on TV, she is the only stylist I've ever known to not be ready with fake smiles or small talk. Never once did she make me feel like I was taking up her time or that she needed me out of there. It took 3 hours to do my hair (I have a lot and really long) and she dedicated those 3 hours to me. The end result was amazing. There is not one thing I could complain about. She kept going over my bangs until she felt completely satisfied with her work. Talk about taking pride in what you do. Her work was completely flawless and I was so happy. From the environment of this place to the stylists to the receptionist, this place is perfect. I will never go anywhere else again! read more

She got rid of the orange and broze looking color that I had from a previous hair dye I had done. I am normally very picky with who I let cut my hair and I heard about Bree Torti from a mutual friend. I decided to give her a try and I am glad I did, she is a great and talented stylist! Model Call is the best salon I have been to in San Diego, and I have been here multiple times. I love the decor inside, the people have always been extremely helpful, offering drinks, magazines and all around concerned with my comfort level from the second I walk in the door. I have always been satisfied with the results after going there. I have had my hair done by both Ari and Bryan and both do a great job. Most recently, Bryan did my hair. I felt he really listened to what I wanted, while also adding some professional input. He took time and care with my hair. My boyfriend loved my do when I got home. he is an expert in hair and a pleasure to be around! I am a regular swimmer so I was a little concerned about the impact of the chemicals on my blond hair. After getting my hair done, Bryan called the next day to let me know of a new product specifically designed to negate the affects of chlorine in hair. He gave me a large deluxe size sample of the product, which I really appreciated. So great that he thought of me even after I had left! I would highly recommend Bryan as well as this salon to anyone. Bryan Brobst knows hair, and he also knows how to make a client happy. I have difficult hair: damaged, color-treated, and I have dry thick wavy hair that is hard to style. Bryan always gives me realistic expectations on how to style my hair. I can't change my genetics, but he teaches me on how to work with what I got to A) insure my hair is on the road to being healthy and B) so I can eventually get the best results. When I met him, my hair was dyed blonde and damaged, and oh yeah, I also had a terrible bob a la Miley Cyrus that some other stylist cut and I was dying to grow it out! He is a genious at all hair types, but he is especially amazing at cutting curly hair. My hair is so manageable now and easy to style since I met him. I'd previously had a lot of difficulty finding a really good stylist around the downtown San Diego area after moving here from Orange County a while back. After researching some of the local salons near me, I decided to try my luck with Model Call Salon after reading the overwhelmingly good reviews by fellow Yelpers, specifically in regards to Veronica. Let me just say right now that I'm SO glad I did! I am now a devoted fan of Veronica's impeccable skills and cheerful, friendly attitude that contribute to an overall wonderful salon experience. She's a naturally great conversationalist, very sweet and genuine, and chatting with her makes you feel like you're popping in to just catch up with an old friend. I've since made several repeat visits since I know she will always do an awesome job with whatever I ask her to do for me! Veronica always takes as much time as necessary to help you figure out and pinpoint exactly how you'd like your hairstyle to turn out. So far every time I've gone in for an appointment with her, the end results have been consistently perfect beyond my expectations! Most recently I went in to see her to have her do a color correction on a horribly botched dye job I'd done the day before my graduation ceremony. I was so panicked that I was going to end up having all these photos taken with me having this ridiculously unnatural-looking hair color that made my skin look super pale and sickly! Veronica managed to make the time to fit me in and after explaining the look I'd originally been trying to accomplish, she was instantly able to find the exact color I needed as well as adding in some gorgeous subtle highlights that just made my hair look PERFECT! I have never been so pleased and impressed with any other stylist before in my life! To summarize: Veronica is an incredibly amazing stylist and you won't be disappointed with her work! Most of the stylists here are good, but now I always ask for Liz because I feel she does a better job than the rest. What ever you do not buy the Groupon deal. The deal was great until I had to dish out more money to get my roots done. So in reality I paid the same as if I did not have the groupon. But this was not the issue. My cut was so uneven looked like I took the scissors and cut it myself with my eyes closed! When I walked out it looked good because she curled it. But once I washed my hair I was in shock! I called the salon the receptionist was very friendly and understood my situation. I went back and the owner took care of me he was amazing!!!! He knows how to cut hair and fixed the disaster. What was very upsetting to me Shannon I think that is her name. Did not have the decency to come up to me and apologize. I have been seeing Mari Symington for years and she is wonderful (estetician). She does my eyebrows and Brazilian and she spends a good amount of time working on these areas, for good reason because I am always SO HAPPY with the result! I definitely recommend her. Not to mention that she has a wonderful personality and is so easy to talk to so time flies. My mother and grandmother have also seen her (for various treatments) and they echo my sentiments. Additionally, the place is beautiful and clean. Everyone has a great personality and they welcome you with water or tea.
