After having a lackluster bagel experience at another restaurant I decided to try here. It's a hipster bagel restaurant and doesn't have any indoor seating. You go inside, place your order, then pick your order up outside at the window and there is some limited outdoor seating. My lox bagel sandwich was delicious and I also enjoyed the bagel I bought to go for breakfast the next morning (it stayed fresh). I also bought some dessert pastries here for my kids and they said they were very tasty. They boil and bake their bagels here (boiling is a must for me - can't stand just the baked bagels - those aren't real bagels!) Even though it was crowded the service was fast enough. This place had been on my list for a long time and I'm glad I finally stopped by. I ordered the Lox Open bagel and it was really good. Fresh ingredients, classic flavors, no complaints. Coffee was good too, although I wouldn't mind a bigger cup. The biggest surprise was how fast they were. Seriously, everything moved really quickly and that's a huge plus in the morning. A couple things to know before you go: seating is outside only, so you might not find a table during busy hours. There's also no restroom or place to wash your hands. So this was a stop on our LA Bakery walk and it's such a pretty building. The owner was super nice and told us the reason he opened up this place and how his bagels are made. We got a sample of the sesame bagel with wasabi cream cheese and persian cucumbers with salmon. It was very delightful! Bagel was chewy and doughy and it was by far my favorite. I was pleased by the fact that this place has decent crowd yet I didn't need to queue for an hour just to get my hands on my bagel LOL (you know what I mean). I wish I'd gone sooner! I grew up in the SFV with my dad getting us most weekends a dozen bagels with lox and good schmear. That bagel shop changed and have been trying to find that legit bagel ever since. Maury's is exactly that where as soon as you walk in it has that feel where you smell the fresh happy bagels and see those old school bagel bins behind the counter. Their everything bagel was perfectly seasoned where there's actual flavor including a little salt while still balanced and it has the exact amount of chewy without being too hard, dry or soft. The lox was fresh and good quality flavored tomato and homemade tasting schmear. Also the fresh made orange carrot ginger juice was bomb. What makes this place 5 stars besides the quality is that it is chill, friendly staff, no pretension (some of these new bagel spots are lame and you wonder if the folks ever been to a real bagel spot), reasonably priced in comparison to places like Courage that are ridiculously priced and definitely don't give you as much and you don't have to wait in that mind numbing line that takes out the simple joy of getting a good bagel when you want it to start off that lovely relaxing morning. My dad passed away this past June and it bums me out I didn't take him to Maury's because he would've loved it. He grew up going to Brooklyn bagels (which has changed imo). Ambiance is chill though this couples dog kept barking up at everyone walking by. What I thought would be pastrami though turned out to be smoked salmon which I assume was prepared like pastrami. Hence the name. Left me with a craving for an actual pastrami bagel. But disappointed tbh. Fresh juice was good and they have sustainable ware. This is a very small bagel shop located in a beautiful brick building in Silver Lake. There is lots of free street parking but watch those parking signs to be on the safe side. You order inside and then get your order outside at a window. There are a few tables on the outdoor patio but no indoor seating. You can order fresh bagels or get a bagel sandwich. The 1/2 and 1/2 is, in my opinion, the best option because you can try two different types of sandwiches, although they will be open-faced (and you only get to select one type of bagel). I went with 1/2 and 1/2 and selected the bagel lox sandwich which comes with red onions and capers, and the smoked trout which comes with pickled red onion, cream cheese, and cucumbers. The presentation of both bagels was amazing. For my bagel, I went with the Za'atar but, unfortunately, I couldn't really appreciate the flavor of the bagel itself given all the different sandwich ingredients. I liked the lox bagel the best because I am a sucker for lox, all day, any day, although the smoked trout was very nice, if you like smoked fish. I was also able to try the egg salad bagel which also comes with red onion and it was outrageously good. The egg salad was very mild but still had a wonderful flavor. We also tried the rugelach (they offer 4 for $4) and they were good but they were the smallest rugelach I have ever seen. The cinnamon one was better than the chocolate one. For the price, it's hard for me to recommend these. No line whatsoever on the weekend. If you don't feel like waiting an hour or more in the hot sun at Courage Bagels, maybe give these guys a try.
