Modern Mechanical was fantastic! They offered lower cost options and saved me thousands on a new AC system.

I have had the worst experience with their technician! He walked in and looked at my house with several electrical problems. First the GFI was not working property, I couldn't push the button and reset it after several tries. Bob, the Senior technician according to the email this company sent me, was able to push the button and made it work. So he told me that my home warranty won't pay for the replacement if it works. OK, fine! The next problem is the ventilation fan above the stove that was in the ceiling that won't turn on and there is a switch that we suspect was the control. He took off the plate of the switch, and told me that the switch had no electricity in it. And I asked him if he could figure out if it was a bad switch, a bad breaker, a bad or the wiring or the fan that is not working. He replied: "I don't know what that is, and I have never seen it in my life!" "I won't touch that greasy thing!" I told him it has been cleaned by professional cleaners twice and acknowledged that it was still greasy, but asked him if he could wear a gloves to at least to look at the fan. Nope! Bob just walked off the site and told me that he would refer me to another company. What a diva! Even though I am not an electrician, I have seen several fans like this in old houses. For an electrician who is not hired to strut the runway but solving my problems, this diva is not up to the job! They took more than a week to send someone but that person is not here for work. What a waste of time! The following day, a handyman came and figured out that the wiring in the switch was reversed and he corrected it, took the cover of the fan off, cleaned it up and made it work. read more

MM installed my HVAC system 12 year ago and have serviced it twice a year since. Last service was a month ago. Last week the AC went out. Service came over and said it was one of two things. They replaced the once part and the AC worked for a day. Tech came out and said it was probably the other part. $1800. I asked for a more experienced tech to look at it and he said likely the second part. Nothing definitive. But they son't stock parts. So now it has been over a week with no AC. Still waiting. Realize that the bosses tell the young techs to come back with four recommendations for the homeowner. These can be as petty as leveling the unit, $400. They will always recommend duct cleaning. no longer confident in their service. read more

HORRIBLE! I've been a customer for over 10 years. Every year I'm last on the scheduling list to get my HVAC serviced because I have a maintenance plan. Now they want to cancel my appointment after I've waited 2 months due to their scheduling issues. Then they keep delaying my appointment and keep telling me it's going to be later and later. You're not only inconveniencing me but 2 other households!​ And this isn't first year or even the second year you've don't this to me. Response: my system is not functioning and I've told them that since this morning at 1 of my properties. Honestly I'm ashamed that I haven't reviewed them sooner. I've used then for everything for the past 7 years. Even helped me with my relatives rental in another county. You could not get me to go anywhere else. Reliable service that does what they promise. The explain everything and do the work in a timely manner. Lower than than 1star for sure. Hoping this is the place with 'julie' as the receptionist, dispatcher. She was a pita calling to get that trash over here. We fell for it. We sent pics of a job we needed done and they said to have them stop by to basically see in person if they could do it. However, at a 119.00 charge. They didn't keep their time line wasting ours and a reschedule was done just to have that stink with too much body fragrance pollute our home air. Of course they took the money and ran because later after 7pm that day they said they couldn't do the job. Shawn, I had been a loyal customer for 5 years, all services including service plans. This year I was dropped without notice and was told you no longer service Winchester. From installation until now your team maintained all. With that said, in 2019 I had a new AC installed and in 2020 a heating system. The installers were Daniel, Alex and Rickey and Alex and Larry for the ladder. It has come to my attention that the heater was installed without following the legal guidelines or specs. I have called you three times to discuss with no response. I also sent an email. I just want you to come and see how awful this set up was, the drain pan is too short and cut in serveral places (so if it does collect water the water will come out) to place other parts to fit, hoses are bent and forced into holes they don't belong as well as wires laying inside the pan. In addition, I had a leak last year that drained down into my living room and it was from the pvc pipe, and no one did anything about the damages but come fix the pipes which now I am told are the wrong size and pitched on the wrong angle causing backup and potential future problems. I will be sending pictures as well and I would like to speak to you directly. finally, the unit must have been dropped as there is a dent in the side and the door to seal the unit doesnt fit so they rigged it. I have been a customer for a very long time and this scheduled maintenance and dryer vent cleaning was done by Cesar. I have to say he is one very thorough technician and I was very pleased with his inspection and vent cleaning. His service was so different than some of the ones I've had before. I even had one inspector tell me he didn't need to check in my attic which houses one of our two units. Let me tell you about Cesar, he even cleaned up behind my dryer for me. This is something that is rare in customer service. I have my HVAC seasonally maintenanced and never had a inspector be as thorough as him. The pictures he took and explained to me and the one problem he found that no other inspector had found in all this time. I tried to spare him from the attic heat for the repair and have him return on another day in the morning but he didn't mind going back in there to fix the problem for us although it was in the dead heat of the day. I just hope the company sees this review and knows what a good technician they have in Cesar. read more

I've been a LOYAL "membership" customer to Modern Mechanical for 3-4 years, but today will be my last day giving them my money. I had them come out to a property to fix a broken garbage disposal, they quoted me almost $700......When I asked for an itemized breakdown to see how much they charged me for the PART, NOBODY would give it to me. I spent over an hour on the phone with multiple representatives who all gave me the same run around saying their SKU's were bundled and they could not give me the cost of a part. (The technician on site told us the part was only $75....same exact product is available on amazon for $94).....not sure how they came up with a $700 bill. Looking at other reviews, this is NO surprise......AWFUL customer service. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

One of the most important aspects when dealing with a business is COMMUNICATION. Based on my interaction with Modern Mechanical, I can attest that they are lacking in their ability to properly communicate the "next steps" to the customer. The plumber who came to my home told me he could do the repair and what needed to be done and that he would be back the next day. I called Modern Mechanical and was told that they can't do the work, however neither the plumber nor anyone from Modern followed up with me to let me know. I was just left thinking the plumber would return to my home to complete the repair. They are not true plumbers, they just have folks running around with iPads watching YouTube videos and all the while calling themselves certified technicians. SMH read more

Bought a new HVAC unit two years ago from One Hour Heating & AC and have had to have 9 service visits in that time. No one was able to fix it and we went through many days of either sweltering heat or frigid cold in our home due to the heating/cooling simply not working. However, one of their service tech's - Adam K - might have saved their reputation and the ONLY reason I'm giving a 3-star rating. He came out and diagnosed the issue as a faulty compressor and spent the better part of a day this Memorial Day weekend replacing our outside unit in the heat. He was courteous and explained everything that was going on and (hopefully) fixed our issues for good. Modern Mechanical/One Hour Heating & AC needs to give Adam a raise because he saved your reputation with this customer! read more

I do not like paying money that I do not have, but I do believe in paying for value provided; and that's with these people do: they provide valuable service. They are honest, they are superb workers, they are loyal, they are family people (when Adam revealed how deeply he loves his wife and two children, I admit: I melted), and they are friends now. I hope I get her name right, but I think it is Alex who answers the phone and deals with my silly ire and irrational blithering, and I truly appreciate her, and her patience, her kindness, and her professionalism. read more

Really disapointed with this company and will not use them again for any of their services - plumbing especially. Bear in mind I'm giving them this rating AFTER reaching out to them at least THREE times so I don't give poor ratings for the heck of it - I'm giving it on the basis of what I thought was very poor work, and even worse customer service. Very 'loose' sense of ethics overall. In brief, after they started the job and left a massive hole in my wall I had to get two other FULLY qualified contractors to visit my property to finish the work. The quotes they gave me confirmed Modern Mechanical was ripping me off. When I challenged M.M on this there was NOT even the slightest effort to correct the work or apologize (which is essentially why I decided to write this review.) The only excuse they gave was that their worker was very experienced. Complete rubish. Many other workers are also experienced and they don't use this as an excuse to rip people off. They told me some complete nonsense about having to 'flush the entire plumbing system'. At that point I knew their worker was full of it. If you have to use them make SURE you get ANOTHER quote from at least one other company. M.M's quote was a wopping 4x a comparable plumber's work - that's right - 4x. To add insult to injury once he started the job - cutting a hole in my wall - he said it would take him another week to finish it!!! I then called in the other workers and found out what nonsense M.M was telling me. The new workers I called in did the job in about 3 hours total. By the way - MM - if you ever read reviews - maybe you should just apologize when you're caught out and fix poor workmenship while you're at it? read more

Modern Mechanical (One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning) was recommended to me by two different friends for a new AC unit and I am so pleased I took their advice. Bill beat other quotes, answered all of my specific questions, and set up the replacement on the timeline I needed. The company sent out two fabulous install techs, Able and Matt, who arrived on time and were very neat, efficient and kind. Before leaving Able explained the entire new system to me in detail with helpful upkeep instructions and let me take a video of the system walk through for my spouse and our future renters. Matt spent time with me discussing the option of a new thermostat and helped us make an informed decision. I called Modern Mechanical based on their Yelp reviews hoping to find a long standing and trustable HVAC service provider. At first they said they had a morning appointment but when they went to book the appointment they said it was unavailable so we decided on a 2-5pm window. I stayed home from work in hopes of an earlier arrival but they ended up contacting me later in the afternoon to let me know that they would be late. Ok, I get it, it was their spring season. Long story short, they quickly diagnosed my problem as originating from a Nest thermostat I had installed over the winter. In what turned out to be a less than 5 minute fix they then proceeded to tell me I would be charged a $99 service call (which in my mind is fine and should be considered labor for the 1st hour) they then proceeded to charge me $169 for switching a wire on the thermostat. I shared my concerns with the technician and he immediately pivoted into how I could pay $199 for my upstairs unit and $179 for my downstairs unit (on the spot) for an annual service contract. If I went this route he would reduce my service call to $50 and wouldn't charge me for the $169 thermostat service. It was clearly apparent that he was incentivized for this type of sale. Had his approach been different and had they only charged for the service call (again, no parts or materials were needed for this brief fix) I probably would have signed up for the service. I then asked if I could pay for their advertised $199 voucher for the price of $159 offered on Yelp and I was told this service call couldn't be used for that because the voucher is for the Annual Service Contracts only. Nowhere on the fine print did it say the voucher had any restrictions. The technician called his manager, who was unaware of the voucher on Yelp, and he also said no. I then asked for the manager to call me to discuss and I was told he would call me the following day. Needless to say, I was never contacted. My neighbor saw the technicians yellow van outside of my house and asked me the following day what I thought of the service and I was quick to tell them that I was not happy. They were shocked by my story. I have never written a bad review on Yelp but want to make sure others are aware of these tactics in order to prevent going through what I had to. read more

Zach A. is an honest, professional, thorough, and knowledgeable technician. As an example, I asked if I can refer him to friends and family because of his excellent service. His response was I can not take company's customer. He stated that you are the company's customer therefore your friends or family are theirs too. Zach is truly an honest man with exceptional work ethic. He discovered the filter was installed incorrectly by Modern Mechanical and showed us how the unit supposed to be. We almost gave up on Modern Mechanical after they changed the name of the company, especially with the last service in 2017. The service level went down significantly. The technician wanted to charge over $500 to replace the filter. If it wasn't Zach we would not know that it was installed incorrectly. Thank you Zach for your excellent service. I had them install a HVAC unit in 2018. The thermostat has gone out but is under warranty. Modern Mechanical will not come out to service the unit because "they no longer service the MD area". They referred me to One Hour, who came out and I was told that they do not service Lennox. Upon checking the website this is a lie because Lennox is listed as one of their units. I've called both companies several times with no resolution nor anyone returning my calls. I would not recommend them nor One Hour. read more

I've been trying to get this addressed since last May 2018 - and flagged it as a urgent in February 2019 as we were preparing to market our home. I'm assured by your team that you are personally aware of this issue and are seeking to have this resolved, but I'm concerned that as this now drags out over a year, and we have under a week until closing on our home, it's now critical. I had to cancel my work order before work was even completed. After carefully describing my plumbing issue on the phone (broken bleeder valve on a house bib line), the plumber arrived and was very personable, but after a cursory look at the line, informed me that he didn't have the parts to do the work and we'd have to schedule the work for another day. I was left scratching my head about this, given that I described what the issue was by phone, and the fact that the scheduler never indicated that the appointment was just for an estimate. There goes a half day of leave to stay home for that. The plumber tells me they'll be in touch within the next 24 hours to schedule the next appointment. Two days later, no word, so I call and schedule the appointment. The day of the appointment, I receive a call about an hour before my appointment window starts from the scheduler. She indicates that they have an emergency request from another customer and so my appointment will be cancelled. While I empathize with someone else having an emergency, there goes another half day of leave. At this point I'm throwing in the towel and finding another plumber who can meet their commitments- hopefully on the first visit. read more

Love this company , always on time they have been always there and fixing all the issues quickly. They are very clean too they made sure that they kept their space neat and clean after their work is done. Dustin was great he came yesterday fixed the pipe that was broken in our garage and took a video so I can have it for insurance claim purposes and made sure that every thing was working and tested couple of time. His partner came also to look at our electricity since water leaked over the board and he made sure that everything is dry and safe for us to use. Roberto is an excellent HVAC technician. He was very patient and very thorough. We were under a maintenance agreement with another HVAC company, and, despite the fact that the other company had just serviced the unit two months ago, the unit was not cooling very well. Roberto took his time with us and fixed several things that the other company had either missed or done incorrectly. We were prepared to buy a new HVAC system from the other company prior to Roberto's service, but now everything is good. We have discontinued service with that "other" company and started a contract with Roberto and Modern Mechanical. When the time comes to buy as new system, we will get it from Modern Mechanical. read more

My home warranty assigned me this company to replace my 22yrs old water heater and Leo the guy who came to do the job wanted to rip me off by asking $160 for the county permit which actually takes only $60 !!! Nope! No integrity, no business! I ended up asking a cash out from my HW company and find a plumber myself. For only half of the price out of pocket, I now have a brand new AO smith water heater in my basement ! read more

Both of our units have been installed by Modern Mechanical. We had a problem with air distribution after the first one, but a tech came out and spent 5 hrs redirecting the vents. Our air conditioner died on Monday and, since we have a home warranty, we decided that we needed something done as soon as possible. We called our home warranty office and they said that this place would give us a call the next day. The next morning, a woman called and told us that someone would be over between 12 and 2 on Wednesday. Wonderful!! At this point, we were losing sleep because it was so hot. On Wednesday, my boyfriend had to take a day off of work so he could be home for the mechanic to arrive. Unfortunately, 2 came and went and, after contacting the person coming out to do the work, some sort of mix-up took place. However, Shawn, our mechanic, was very apologetic and told us that he could still come on Wednesday but he'd have to come at 5 which worked for us so, no biggie. He came out, did his thing, and fixed our AC!! He was a really nice, polite, personable guy and I was pleased to have had such a pleasurable experience with someone that I really had no say-so about using. I will definitely use his services in the future! read more

We were quoted $340 for a "Voltage Absorption Device" - with no part number to replace, and a quick google of this shows that there isn't a component with this name on my unit. Instead, you find discussion of this being a fancy name for a capacitor, so that companies can charge more for a cheap part. The unit was working, just not as efficiently, when the gentleman came out, so how it could have failed, and still be working, baffles me. He quoted $340 to clean the coils as well. $340 to hose it down. When we questioned both repairs, he said he could knock the $340 down to $190 if we bought the companies 2x a year maintenance package (Why wasn't this the first offer?). He also got very terse with us when questioned. We declined, paid the service fee, and cleaned the coil ourselves. The A/C unit works perfectly now. Additionally, when I was writing the check, I kept pressing him on the fact that the unit was running before, and now I cannot hear it run. He kept giving me excuses, until finally he told me he unplugged it. "To prevent further damage". He was going to leave, with the unit unplugged. I will never, ever, use this company again. read more

This is an update review. I changed my rating from 1 star to 4 - the co-owner of the company provided a refund which we had mutually agreed upon....and although that does not eliminate the unfortunate incident which my family endured - it does show that the owners themselves do care about the service they provide and they stand behind their work. I believe what happened is that the Company management (one level below owners) were not empowered to make certain decisions, and when I spoke to the co-owner about this he said he was going to implement a policy to allow them to act on the owners behalf on situations like I encountered. I believe this will go a long way to getting their company an outstanding reputation. They'll have another opportunity to show their professionalism in the spring when they perform the spring A/C checkup. I'll post another review then. read more

After our Vivint thermostat died two years ago, our heat pump would run at non-stop full-blast heat unless we threw the circuit breaker. (By the way, I don't recommend Vivint, and we're replacing the system next month.) Unfortunately, our house has odd wiring (courtesy of the previous owner who fancied himself a DIYer but too cheap to be effective) which made installing our new WiFi-controlled thermostat on our own tricky at best. Likewise, most HVAC companies in our area (or which service our area) seem to be consistently rated with one star. Modern Mechanical is based out of the area I work in, but luckily our city is just within their service range. Since the technology is fairly new and Zen's mobile website admittedly leaves a lot to be desired, (installation and setup requires going through their website) I can't fault the tech for the struggle with installation. First it was only putting out cool air, then he switched the wires but Zen's mobile website wouldn't let him select the correct wire configuration. It was only when he used his tablet and accessed their regular site that it finally acknowledged the wire configuration and sent the correct code to program the unit. What I especially found favourable was that the tech explained everything to me so that I now know which wires are supposed to do what. (The one throwing us off turned out to be a redundant wire.) Installation ended up at $150, which seems a little hefty for a regular installation. But considering it took 2 hours to get through the problems, it seems reasonable given the time an effort involved, not to mention explanations about what was going on. We'll probably be giving them another call for the necessary tune-up in the following months. read more

My water heater died on the evening of Monday Dec 15. My warranty company called one place - they couldn't even come out for a diagnosis until that Friday!! Modern Mech was next on the list. Leo came out Tuesday afternoon - and called first so I could remain at work for most of the day - and diagnosed the problem. A computer sensor. He called a couple of places to order it, got it FedEx'd on Wednesday (I gladly paid the $100 shipping fee) and installed it on Thursday afternoon. He was professional, friendly, and explained my odd system to me. I live in a condo so my gas heat & hot water are connected. No hot water equals no heat! And now I know why. Taylor (office assistant) was also helpful in relaying all the delivery information and re-scheduling, etc. ... I would definitely use them again!! read more

Our 14 yo Goodman AC unit went out so our 2-10 home warrantee company called these guys instead of our usual company. Always got the feeling that I was being upsold with the old company and this is a pretty unregulated industry so it keeps me on my toes. Even with the coverage, it was going to cost $650 to replace the coil etc and there was no guarantee that something else wouldn't go out (compressor) in the middle of August so we set up a sales appt. The rep (Jeremiah) was very nice and not pushy and we went with a middle of the road Lennox (17 SEER). They were able to get me in 48 h later just as the heat wave was about to strike. I was going to take 2 more bids before deciding but I was actually having a tough time finding three companies that had a decent BBB/yelp rating. Brett and Paul showed up when they said at 9AM. Very professional and represented the company well. The 17 SEER has a pretty big outdoor unit and it didn't quite fit through our gate so their tech, Joe (?) and I took apart a segment of the fence, they moved it in and then we put the fence back together. Went pretty snappy actually. They didn't leave a mess and had me briefed on the system (which has an ipad type interface on the wall and alerts them via wifi when something is amiss) and were out the door by 3PM. If the repair crews are this good, I'll be using them for years to come. read more

What a worst company to deal with. Called them for Freon recharge and they did recharge (told different amount initially then I google it and found the average price is far less so able to negotiate !!!) but entire Freon leaked in one month. When contacted they said they charge again dispatch fee to look at it because it is more than 30 days so called another HVAC specialist to double check what's going on. It turns out Modern Mechanical forgot to put the cap after recharge and it caused leak. i even sent proof to MM guys. Contacted them again and they said that somebody might have done it and we are 1000% perfect with our work. Guess these are the only people on this planet who never make any mistake !!! we must be lucky to have them serve our location !!!! Please save your time and money by going with other HVAC guys. THIS IS AFTER OWNER RESPONSE Owner said "When we first services your system, you would have had our 2 year warranty on the work......Our return call would have been at no charge." but following is the response I received when I contacted them !! Mon, Jul 15, 10:02 AM "Thank you for contacting Modern Mechanical. Since it has been more than 30 days since we were last there, there would be a dispatch fee for us to come back out."
