I've lived in this neighborhood for 25 years and watched Modern Nail open its doors roughly two decades ago. I travel frequently now so I don't get there as often as I used to but every time I return I am so happy it's still here! The pricing is right in the middle, neither the most expensive nor the cheapest. It is quite clean and with just 8 chairs and typically only 2-3 staff members, it's intimate and never feels rushed unless they are fully booked with a line out the door. I haven't seen that in many years and there is cute little bench in front of the salon and great coffee & boba near so even when you have to wait a minute, there is a comfortable and entertaining spot to do so - that particular part of 22nd street is great people watching! I usually call a friend I haven't seen in a bit & have them meet me there and they are lovely about us chatting quietly - and asking us every now and then if we would like some tea, or water. If you go in with reasonable expectations, you'll have a lovely experience. Modern Nail is the ideal neighborhood spot. I'm so grateful it is part of our wonderful Dogpatch! read more

I came here for my first eyebrow wax and unfortunately didn't have the best experience. The lady was kind and was able to take me right away since they weren't busy, which I appreciated. During the wax, it was more painful than I expected, but I didn't think much of it since waxing can be uncomfortable and I trusted that I was in good hands. After she finished shaping my brows with tweezers, they were still stinging quite a bit. When we were done, she had me meet her at the front to pay. I wasn't offered a mirror to check my eyebrows, which wasn't a huge concern because I trusted her work. However, after I left, my eyebrows were still burning, so I used my phone camera to take a look. I noticed that the skin had been lifted on both eyebrows. As soon as I got home, I cleaned the area and applied ointment. I understand that accidents can happen during waxing, and I'm not upset that it happened. What disappointed me most was that I wasn't told my skin had lifted. I would have appreciated the honesty and some aftercare instructions so I knew how to properly care for the area. I hope this feedback is taken as constructive. Better communication in situations like this would go a long way and would have made my experience much more positive. read more

It's a Monday and the place was dead. I was a walk-in. I asked if they would see me they said yes just a simple regular pedicure. The massage was extra and I agreed because it was quiet and I figured they could use a little more business on a quiet Monday after Easter..... and it was really a lovely foot and leg massage but the woman who actually did my pedicure couldn't have made me feel any less welcome. She was literally annoyed that I interrupted her phone screen scrolling time rushed everything from the cuticle trim to the polish. I overheard another client say that she'd been there for two hours and she was unhappy and that they should stop using that nail polish as it was clearly old and dried very clumpy. After that client left, I watched the person who did my pedicure put that polish right back on the shelf, even though she knew it was old and shouldn't be used anymore. Terrible! read more

I have been there several times...they are ok when they're not busy. If they are busy forget about it. They were ridiculously rushed. My wife's cuticles were cut twice and the guy did not care even though she winced audibly. Her polish was chipped within a day. I picked a gel color accidentally. She said I'll get you the regular one. It was not at all the same color. She said it is the same number. I said it's not the same color. My bad for not insisting. I asked for 2 coats. She said that was 2 coats. It wasn't. Mine started chipping that day. Not acceptable for $60 each. read more

Save your money. I've been to this nail salon twice for a gel manicure, and both times my nail polish came straight off after only 1 day. Since I live around the corner from this salon, I wanted to try it again to see if the experience would be any different a 2nd time. However after my 2nd ever manicure here the same thing occurred where the entire nail polish comes off of my nails after just 1 day. This is my new waxing place. I used to go to European Wax Center but I prefer this salon. It's much less painful because they don't use such large, long strips. I also appreciate how they can fit me in as a walk in. In regards to manicure/pedicures, I recently had both and felt they were fine experiences. I have a high tolerance for mediocre service at nail salons but after my third visit here I've decided no more. Service: Everyone besides the owner is cordial enough. The owner on the other hand seems like she's permanently grumpy. While it might be her demeanor and usual resting face she seems like could care less if she had return customers, which isn't smart for business. Quality: Are they diluting the nail polishes? Each coat added looks watery as if it was mixed with clear gel polish. They also don't have all of the colors from their choices of nails they tell you to look at. My manicurist broke through my skin from filing! I bled and she wasn't terribly apologetic about it until she took her own nail to scrape the nail polish off which had settled into the cut that resulted that the file. All in all, it was sloppy work and lack of attention. Look fine, you cut me but you really had to aggravate it? Besides getting cut my cuticles have polish all over. The hand massage is a joke. They lather the lotion, and don't do a massage. For $30, crappy service and quality I'm done. Don't come here. There are a ton better out there. I wanted to leave two stars, because some aspects of our mani/pedicures were ok. After seeing the state of my partners toe later that night, I feel like I have to be honest about the whole experience. When we first walked in, everything seemed fine. We were seen straight away, he for a mani pedi, just a pedicure for me. We sat down and I got to noticing some hygiene issues. The dirty smudged walls, sterilisation machine and other dirty equipment. Later, asking me to walk across the room barefoot to the dryer when everyone else was wearing shoes, was pretty gnarly. The woman who did my pedicure was friendly, a little too keen with the clippers and a little shy with the exfoliation but generally fine. After I'd been waiting about 50 minutes for my nails to dry, I asked an older woman wearing glasses behind me if they would be dry yet. Maybe she misunderstood? She just came over and yanked out the dividers, smudging my big toe in the process and tutting at me. Then things got uncomfortable. Clearly annoyed and without saying a word (to me at least. She mumbled something to a colleague.) She marched on with a botched-up repair job and did SUCH A BAD job - smudging in the process and applying the coats unevenly - clearly she wasn't qualified. Straight afterward she snapped at me to put on a pair of disposable flip flops and threw my shoes in a bag. I was pretty confused as I had only asked her how long they would take to dry and would've been happy to wait instead of being pushed out into the dusty street. It was intimidating, I kept trying to be as polite, passive and grateful as I could to assuage her. Then when we went to pay, my partner tried to enter a custom tip amount of 15% (we were pretty annoyed at how rude she was,) but she grabbed the screen off him and chose 20% for herself! To complete the whole experience, my partners toe has been in pain all day since and started swelling up. We are hoping a trip to our physician won't be necessary. I have been here couple of times to give this place a chance and both times I have been disappointed. The pedicure soak seems really fancy with coffee beans, but the pedicure itself is very substandard. Both times I asked for Callus removal and both times they barely made an effort to do it. The pedicure doesn't include a massage and you have to pay $10 for it. The first time at least the lady tried to sell that, the second time she didn't even bother to ask. Also I got gel nails and my right index finger fell off within a day !!! I have never had this happen before. If I go here I would only go out of necessity as I live right around the block and it's convenient. I wouldn't go here again by choice. read more

'Twas the day before Mother's Day and I needed my hands and feet done and I waited last minute to make reservations. I drove past this place to go to the park that's down the street and saw them and decided to look them up and make an appointment. To my surprise I was able to but only for a mani, but I really needed a pedi, but I made it in the notes that I needed both. They were able to accommodate me and service my hands and feet at the same. The ambience is very relaxing, the ladies were very gentle and kind. The foot was massage was very relaxing I also fell asleep in the chair, I will be back to bring my boyfriend for Father's Day. I live in Oakland or I would make this my salon. So far my polish has last, it's only been 2 days, but it's doing well. I received gel on both hands and feet. I would like to add, I wasn't expecting much after attending cosmo school, I know that some Asian salons can be chop shops and they don't follow code or you might be rushed in and out, but in this case that wasn't it. There was no one when I arrived and left so they took their time on me. They didn't have regular spa chairs which is good because those foot bath jets can carry bacteria if not washed correctly. Everything was A+ service. I wish they had offered a glass of champagne or wine. I think that would of been a perfect spa experience with the foot rub. read more

I went for a gel manicure removal the other day because it was chipped and I knew I shouldn't remove my own gel mani because I didn't have the tools. Wanted to get it professional removed. Walked in and the lady was so rough on my nails. She scrapped it off very very roughly even when it wasn't coming off and didn't bother to clean up the scratches on my nails at the end. My nails have become so brittle that it hurts when I scratch anything or touch my nail beds against any item. I can't even wash my hair without it hurting. My nails have never been like this. Would've been in a healthier shape if I removed it myself...even without the right tools. Spent $10 just to get really unhealthy nails now that are in a worse situation then had I done it myself. The two ladies who did my mani-pedi (at the same time!) were extremely gentle and very nice. The process was speedy and I was then left to sit in my (non-massage) chair since they don't have a fan station, I didn't know when to leave and probably should have waited longer because I, of course, dinged one nail... Major con: two of the staffs young boys were stationed across from me in a small room and it was pretty intimate so when the 8 year old started listening to loud YouTube videos that were EXTREMELY inappropriate (I'm talking N* word, Sex talks, degrading sh*t... you name it) and even when I asked them to turn it down because it was offensive and the opposite of calming he kept listening.... So moral of the story is, bring headphones and try not to sit next to the kids! Only issue is that one of them did two coats and one three so my toes are slightly lighter, but it's not like anyone else would notice though. read more

Dog friendly! We had breakfast across the street at Just For You Cafe and just happened to be walking past when they were opening. I asked if we could get a mani/pedi with our dogs. The older lady said no problem. Since we were the only customers on a Friday morning, there was no waiting. It was strange that they brought big bowls of purple water with coffee beans rather than have the typical pedicure chairs. I put both poodles on my lap while the young man did my pedicure and the older lady did my manicure. I like fast service and Modern Nail did a fast but good job! $35 for mani/pedi with extra nice tip for letting me bring in my dogs. We'll be back! read more

Update 03/2008 The prices have increased to $25 for Pedicure and $15 for Manicure. I think I have been going less and less often because I don't want to pay so much. I have only ever gotten Pedicures here. I used to pay $11 in Los Angeles (although I insisted on them using my own supplies and tools). I really don't need perfect toenails every three weeks lately. I can manage to either wear socks and shoes or just repaint them myself once in a while. My problem is I cut my toenails too short by myself. Yeah, lame excuse. I love the two brothers. Son and Johnny. They are always sweet and know me by name now. Last time Johnny gave a really good foot massage with the Pedicure and I think I got my $25 worth. I'm torn about staying with them or possibly searching for a cheaper place. They give you perfection. Often they switch off, Johnny starts the pedicure and then Son does the painting. Sometimes one of them does all of it, but either way, I'm usually always happy. The process is pretty slow and takes a good hour, but I try my best to not make timely plans after. I go to relax and be pampered for an hour. I love that they let me sit and relax for as long as I want to. I think I'm paying to be spoiled, which is actually okay with me, once or twice a month. Everyone who knows me, knows I practically live by my flip flops and I always have perfect toenails. They look like red candy apples right now. Original Review 09/17/2007 4.45 stars and growing. I almost reconsidered, but really wanted to try this place out because of the great reviews here. I'm so glad we kept our appointments. We had the place to ourselves. You really need to make an appointment, for now, otherwise you may wait a while if they are already taking care of other people. Right now it's only the two brothers. I met Son. He said they will eventually hire more people once they see how the business grows and their client awareness increases. I'm pleased if they keep it quiet though. Much more calming and relaxing this way. We had tea, magazines and music. I can't remember what kind of music it was, maybe some kind of mixed jazz, urban, tempo. It was a little too loud, almost hard to hear each other whisper to each other, but still we liked it better than having a ton of people around. I didn't notice a TV at all, which is fine with me. I would like recommend to the owners... When they are doing the pedicure part of cleaning up the nails and cuticles, make sure to sit close enough so we don't have to hold our legs up in an uncomfortable position for the 15 or so minutes it takes to clean up the nails. My knees (my friend's too) started hurting. The little seats they sit on have wheels and they have to sit a certain way to avoid sliding back for the customer to sit comfortably without having to keep ourselves from pushing them away. Maybe they should put locking casters on the wheels to keep them snug. We were very comfortable during the painting process and really enjoyed the hot towels too. I really wish the pedicure came with a little foot rub or pressure point massage for the bottom of the foot. Just a little, that would be so lovely. I don't like it when other places rub or massage the calves, they usually do it too hard and focus on that instead of the soles of the feet. I wish I could teach people how to massage feet. Sorry I went off into a tangent dreaming about foot rubs. Quality of the pedicures and painting was excellent, one of the best I've had in SF. Yay, finally a place I can go to close to home. Update. So Modern Nail Bar is still very nice, but... 1) they raised their prices so it's not as good a deal. 2) they do a great job, still one of the best mani/pedis ever. It's not the most beautiful nail salon I have ever been to, but I truly believe I got the best looking mani/pedi of my life... 2 times so far and I'm going back again tomorrow. The brothers are super sweet. The ambiance is very relaxing. My neurotic friend (you know who you are) was particularly appreciative of the individual utensils (they give you a filing thing and your toe separators when you leave). She is very concerned about cleanliness. I kind of missed the massage chairs from some other places we go to, but the chairs they have are very nice and relaxing. I felt pampered. And, the best thing of all, my nails looked perfect! Nothing super special, but no screw-ups, my nails were evenly coated, and everything looked exactly as it should. They even suggested a fabulous new color for me the first time I went. I've paid more for far less, and less for less, but this seems like the right price for what they offer. Their manicures are fine but they suck at customer service- are really aggressive, act annoyed all the time and act as if they are doing you a huge favor by doing yoru manicures for a HEFTY price. I would even pay happily if they deserved it but the owner lady has such poor human skills that I would not even give this place a wasted penny of mine. Officially done with this place. I came here on four separate occasions and every time they rushed, didn't file evenly, left cuticles behind and polish was uneven. I tried slowing them down and yes micromanaging but the results are all subpar compared to what I'm used to. I live a few blocks away and was hoping for the best but looking at my nails today I'm just frustrated that I have to get them redone. Every person in this place rushes, doesn't seem to like their job or do a good job. I could paint my toes more evenly and file the nails better than them. I really wanted to like this place because I live close by, but this was the worst mani pedi I've ever received at a salon. For starters, the polish selection wasn't great. Additionally, my technician appeared to be the owner, and kept interrupting my service to handle the register when other technician's clients got up to pay. As for the pedicure: I don't have a ton of calluses, but my technician put such little effort into treating them--she literally brushed my feet twice, missing my heel each time. I had to ask to get my calluses a little more attention and she used the manicure nail smoothing board, which obviously did nothing, because she threw out the callus remover too quickly. For the manicure: She was pretty rough with pushing back and trimming my cuticles. She even cut one too far and made it bleed. Fortunately, she treated it with an antiseptic so I haven't gotten an infection so far. I asked to have my nails evened out, but she rushed through so they're all slightly different lengths. The actual polish job was pretty bad. She frequently got polish on my skin or avoided the edges entirely leaving gaps where polish should be. She didn't paint the top layer evenly over the base layer, so there are clefts at the nail tips and edges. I asked for a retouch which kind of helped but the very next day, my polish started chipping at those clefts. I got an OPI Infinite Shine 2 polish, which is supposed to last 10 days and costs $3 extra dollars but I couldn't even get more than 2 days of wear before the chipping became unbearable and I had to take off the polish. I came with a friend and the seated us separately despite having space together in a back room, I guess to keep the appearance of a busy storefront. She got a gel mani and the tech put on so many coats that her nails look strangely bulbous. Overall, we both left feeling like we could have done a better job ourselves. We don't plan to come back since there are other salons in the area. read more
