I called to make an appointment for mani & pedi, while I was trying to gauge the prices of a regular/gel mani and pedi the lady on the phone was frustrated with me when I was asking questions and trying to write them down because this appointment was supposed to be for three people and all were going to get something different. The quality of their phone service was awful, especially when I heard the lady put me on speaker and all the workers in the facility proceeded to yell at me and ask what I wanted when I had stated what I was looking for, and had scolded me. I doubt this was a language barrier issue, really sad because I wanted to try something new and they were really rude. The vibes of this place were not great. I walked in to get my gel extensions removed and a regular gel manicure only to walk out with a pinky nail that was filed to the literal flesh. She wanted to put gel directly on my flesh as a "fix" since she filed my natural nail to oblivion; so like any reasonable person, I hightailed it out of there. I understand that extensions can be difficult to remove, but I am appalled at the gross negligence on the nail tech's part for insisting that they could remove it properly when it was clearly not the case. I got my nails done here yesterday. They are are very friendly and accommodate walk-ins. I came in with an acrylic overlay and I wanted a gel manicure and a pedicure. The lady that worked on my hands did a decent job removing the acrylic on all but one nail where she dug in with the instrument and it hurt bad. My nail is still very tender today. She apologized, but it was quite uncomfortable. The pedicure was good. A 5 minute foot massage is $5. That was different. Most places I go to include a short foot massage and charge extra for a reflexology or longer massage. It was still a good basic pedi. Nails came out decent. I should have read the reviews.... But by the time I did it was too late. Called ahead and was told to come in that they had immediate availability but when we got their we waited around for 20 minutes for someone who was on their way. Only two employees where at the location both of which where working on one lady. After waiting around a woman showed up to do my manicure and wanted to basically do it over my lap which i did not understand everytime I have been here it is done at the table but this time a woman was sitting their reading a magazine and the worker did not want to ask to her move. They have raised their prices also. For the wait and quality of service it is definitely not worth it. This is sort of sad as my grandmother / sister / mom and I have been coming here off and on for many years. Sadly it is time to move on. read more

Not sure why this place has such bad reviews. I came here and thought the salon and the service was pretty awesome! This salon is located in the residential area in Noe Valley. Parking is a bit of a challenge but is expected in San Francisco. The salon is super clean, hardwood floors, and has about 3 stations for nails and 3 stations for Pedi's. Most importantly they have a HUGE selection of OPI colors! The most I have seen at any salon, almost a full wall of it. In addition, they have a decent selection of shellac colors as well. The cost..$8 eyebrow wax, spa pedi and mani for $26, you can't go wrong. Ghetto prices and upscale service, no complaints here! read more

My friends have been raving about this place for awhile. A cheap mani & pedi place, they also do waxing. Today I had the spa mani&pedi and it only cost me $20!!!! WOW! It came with a parrafin wax, although I'm not sure what that does. The massage felt so good on my feet! I got there a little past 10:30am and I was done by 11:00am. It was empty being a Friday and all, and I hear the wait on the weekends can be a little horrendous. They do waxing too and by the prices on the board they seem pretty cheap/ reasonable. Unclean and unsanitary. Many repeat customers had fungi. I keep my translator running in the background on my phone and learned that they were even speaking ill of me in their language and laughing. I remember when this place opened! It was charming and much calmer than it's sister nail salon down the street, Angel Nails, and I found myself here with my roommate just about every 3 weeks or so for a pampering pedicure. I moved out of the 'hood a few years ago, and have been back once or twice, finding the service to be good and my feet happy, and since my old roomie and I were treating ourselves to what is sure to be out last luxury for awhile (our babies are due pretty much the same day!) we thought it was the perfect place! Unfortunately, something had changed here. Let's see: The ladies were nice enough... the spa chairs comfy... we were offered water... they even added a mask treatment for your legs as your feet are soaking. Sounds pretty nice, doesn't it? What wasn't nice was the rushed nature of the pedi. (there was no one waiting) Or the wincing I was doing as the manicurist worked my cuticles. Nor was the uncomfortable scrubbing of my foots very high and ticklish arch. I KNOW there are no calluses there and not at all relaxing... and when I asked her to not scrub there, she shot me a look and pretty much stopped scrubbing -- even the bits that needed it most. The French pedi was a nice, well-executed thin line. The top coat, on the other hand, seemed dull. I like shiny toes and felt like the product they used was cheap. I asked for another coat and I was told that it became dull because I put my feet too close to the heater. If that were the case, only one of my feet would looked dull. Not both. Again I was shot a look as she applied another coat of clear (not shiny) polish. As for the manicure, it was just fine overall. Sadly, the polish lasted exactly 1 day. I only get a clear coat on my hands because I wash them a lot, but generally get a good 3-4 days before the peeling begins. As I look at my nails on day 2, I am disappointed to see peeling or completely peeled clear polish... even on my pinkies :( So sad to see a place that used to be such a lovely little oasis of pampering fall by the waste side. And while I'm giving them 3-stars, I don't think I'll be back. read more

Least relaxing 'spa treatment' mani/pedi ever. They talk incessantly and loudly to each other, it's chaotic, and they seem extremely disorganized. They started my pedicure, the left and started someone else's so the other customer wouldn't leave. My manicurist stopped at least three times, once to fix a phone, once to chat to a friend on the phone - the third time to take a bite of her food. I nearly got up out of the foot bath and left. I'd never go here again even though it's walking distance around the corner from my house. I'd rather walk to 24th Street to Rainbow, where it's peaceful and they do a nice job. The pedicure was fine, except they rushed the manicure and my nails were left ragged and uneven. They were rude and just grunted at me. At one point she was talking to her friend so angrily she was squeezing my hand so hard I had to ask her to stop hurting me. I felt like a piece of meat. Also - seemed quite unclean and way too crowded with chairs everywhere like an assemblyline. They asked me to sit down in a spa chair that had old towels and tissues that had been in someone's toes on the seat. Gross. Other reviews say you get what you pay for, but I can go to about 5 other places in the city I can think of for the same price and a clean, friendly atmosphere. This is not that. I've had my gel manicures done by Lana several times now and she has done a wonderful job each time. She is so meticulous every step of the way and I really appreciate that about her work. She is so nice and friendly and gives an amazing shoulder, arm, and head massage I look forward to it every time I see her! I don't understand why this place has such a low rating.. Yes it's small but all the women there do fabulous work and I am especially committed to seeing Lana since she always makes sure my nails are on point. In terms of pricing I think it's very reasonable, $30 for a set of gels. Overall I'm very happy with the service I have received at Noe Valley Nails and I never see myself going elsewhere, Lana has my full trust with my nails. A definite gem in Noe Valley! read more

I went in for a simple mani-pedi and left 40 minutes later with a bludgeoned toe, the worst manicure ever (nails with gaps where my cuticles once were, and air bubbles covering each nail), terrible cuticles, and dead skin under my feet. I asked if the attendant could briefly re-tend to my feet, and she asked me if I planned on leaving a tip. I said "no," and then she did the same. This place ought to be shut down. I am never going back to this nail salon ever again. Some idiot nicked my pinky in Dec '04 and it managed to screw my life for good. After going to this salon..a few weeks later, I had developed a staph infection on my right hip and had a couple surgeries not to mention antibiotics to kill it. I had lost my right hip because of bone damage and had to walk in a walker for an entire year until Feb of this year...I had gotten a hip replacement. I was 18 at the time of the hip replacement surgery but I am now 19 years old...too young to have an artificial hip. However, I am thankful to be alive. I haven't been to a nail salon since. If I plan to go to a nail salon in the future..I want management to be very, very sanitary. IN other words...HIGH maintenence. Or..I will just bring my own tools to the salon. read more

Most nail salons are more about the experience than giving you great looking nails. Noe Valley Nails is a pared-down, bare bones operation, but for the price, you get a beautiful, long-lasting manicure. If you go with an OPI polish, your manicure could last as long as two weeks. The waxer here is also excellent for eyebrows. Both my housemate and I get our eyebrows done by her and even though she is Italian and I am pale of hair and skin, we both look smokin' after. Extra bonus: the nail technicians are very sweet and most speak fairly good English. Extra extra bonus: there is rarely a wait, even on a Saturday in the dead of summer. read more

Bare basics and no frills; that's what you get here. When I lived on 27th and Church, this was my regular nail salon for two years. I've never had a truly bad experience here, but I stopped coming because of convenience. When they first opened, this little salon was a wonderful neighborhood gem. It was a great place to go for a quick, inexpensive manicure/pedicure. Their waxing services are decently priced too. However, since the shop has grown in popularity, their customer service has definitely suffered. They will often call in girls from the other shop for back-up and have multiple girls assist you to help turnover as many customers as possible. Karen and Mimi are the best; they do take care of their regulars. But when they get busy, it's difficult to request specific girls -- unless you want to wait. read more

Although I've moved to Sacramento County, I still come into the city regularly. I USED to go to Noe Valley Nails but switched to Tip Top Nails just down the street (@ Duncan). Why? This last visit cinched it for me. I was at Tip Top waiting w/a friend but the wait was too long (I wonder why...great place) so we walked down to Noe Valley Nails where they seated us right away. I'd stopped going to Noe Valley Nails before then because I found the place dirty, the treatment rushed, and was not pleased w/their procedures. However, due to my time constraints, I thought what the heck. I paid for my and my friends mani/pedi on my credit card (total $44) and put a zero in the tip section because I like to tip in cash and totaled the bottom at $44. You can imagine my surprise when my credit card bill came in for $64! On my next visit to SF, I brought my receipt and VISA bill. They put up a fuss, said they couldn't do anything, had to wait until their manager returned from Las Vegas!!! They wanted to make a copy of the receipt and VISA bill but were unsuccessful to I went to MY bank and had copies made. I returned later. Still, no cooperation. I went back two days later, still no cooperation and they insisted that it was the bank's fault, not theirs. So, I called my bank and was assured that NVN had submitted the charge and filed a report against the charge. About two weeks later I get a call from their owner--aaahh, they DID make the mistake on the tip (remember, I'd zeroed in the tip column and totaled the receipt to $44). She offered me a credit on my next treatment. I said no, that I lived in Fair Oaks and to please send me a check. They did. I'm not very happy with many of these salons and the treatments that the nail techs do, although it's hard to turn away from a total charge of $18 - $22 for a mani/pedi. First, the nails should be shaped before going into the water. The water should be warm with an oily/sudsy solution, not plain. A cuticle softener should be placed on the cuticles before the soak. After soaking, cuticles should be pushed back with an orange stick wrapped in cotton, not a metal stick that peels away layers of soft nail tissue. Then apply a nail oil. Ideally, cuticles should not be clipped, only hangnails. After a massage with lotion and smoothing the surface of the nail for ridges, the nails should be cleaned again w/either remover or alcohol to remove any oils so that the base coat will adhere! Clean under the nails with the orange stick and then paint--1 coat base, two coats color, 1 coat top coat. Let dry between coats. For polish to really last, there should be a 3 to 5-minute wait between coats and the coats should be put on in three strokes. First place the polish on the center of the nail near the cuticle. Then, one stroke on the left, one on the right and the final stroke down the middle. If polish gets on the cuticle, the manicurist SHOULD NOT use their own fingernail to remove it! Instead, it should be removed w/an orange stick wrapped in cotton that has been soaked in remover! Then, sit at your spa chair (or not...it's cheaper to not sit in the spa chair) and have your pedicure. Nail polish doesn't dry with a fan! Lacquer needs to "cure" to dry, that's why it's better to have heat. Think of painting kitchen cabinets. So, if you can have that 3-5 min. wait between coats (INSIST on it! I do!), then you'll have a longer-lasting manicure. In fact, ask for your manicure to be done first, at the desk, where you can sit and really look at what's going on. If need be, ask for a clean work area, fresh towel, & sanitized instruments. When they start to clean away nail polish that's gone on the cuticle w/their own nail, pull away! Ask for them to use an orange stick wrapped in cotton-soaked remover. They KNOW this. That's how they LEARN to do it in beauty school! Why do they rush? You do the numbers. If they can get you in and out in under 45 minutes, they make more money. Insist on your right to a proper manicure and pedicure! I hope they see this. They'll know who I am! read more
